Bill Nelson is on a level that only a few musicians ever stand. Charlie Tumahai's bass playing is excellent on this live version of sister seagull. What a fantastic band they were.
I was fortunate enough to meet Charlie in 1989 in Queenstown at a club named The Dolphin Club. He was in a New Zealand band The Herbs and Joe Walsh was touring with them. He was also a fantastic vocalist. Interesting enough he told me about Be bop Deluxe and his introduction to Paul McCartney while in England. The Herbs drummer got up and had a jam with us for almost a whole set. Great times.
Very very true ... ask ten people here in the US “who is Bill Nelson?“ and you’ll get back ten blank stares ... it’s criminal their success here was under the radar ... wish I had seen them live in the day 🙏🏼🎸
Late to the party, but not to Be Bop. Back in college (70's) a friend was playing an album in his dorm. Turned out it was Axe Victim. Been a fan ever since. USA here!!
Only guy I've seen and heard that can play every style on Guitar. That's blues, funk, rock, jazz, reggae , punk, grunge, pop, folk, soul, heavy metal etc etc. Don't believe me oh well get the early albums from axe victim and listen
One of the greatest bands of all time. Such a shame they never got the credit and recognition they deserved. I saw them 5 times in the early eighties in southern California. They were never less than stellar.
Loved Gilmour, studied it nailed it,Gary Moore studied it nailed it Bill Nelson, live in the air age ,still working on it 30 years later,,,The most fantastic guitarist of them all, a toxic mixture of rock blues soul and jazz all at blinding speed but still melodic, see what I mean, the man is my all time hero,,
WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME IN MY LIFE MEETING THE LOVE OF MY LIFE AND THE MUSIC AND EASY GOING LIFE JUST WISH THEM TIMES BACK BUT BLOODY GOOD BAND SAW THEM A COUPLE OF TIMES NEVER WELL DONE 👏
Does anyone realize Bill has over 120 cd's out, and still puts them out? He's supposed to have a 6 cd box of all new material out by the end of November
Can't beat the version of this song on Live! In the Air Age. In fact, you can't beat anything on Live! In the Air Age. Love it as much now as when I bought it in 1978. With the Covid lockdown, my hair is now almost as long as it was then, too! Catching up to the presenter in this video.
This is great posting- Classic Be Bop track and what a group yes Bill was very special but the rest of the band were too- met Bill twice and he was such a nice guy too- my truly first love!
Sister seagull, oh you're flying me too high Feels so dizzy underneath your open skies And it's strange the games we play to hide the crime Sister seagull you're the reason I survive I am a prisoner who has thrown away the key My soul has vanished with the bird who flies so free And the wings of change have spread themselves o'er me Sister seagull you're the reason I survive I am waiting here for the tide to turn And the pathways of the air to open Will you meet me there By the golden stairways to the clouds To the clouds I am a changeling Like the wind across the waves Though in the end there will be nothing left to save I will return one day With all the love you gave Sister seagull you're the reason I survive I survive I survive
I seen them on don kirshners rock concert i was about ten they blew my mind there music chemistry and im a brother sad they are not more popular unbelievable
Nelson and his F-hole Gibson, red I do believe.. Only Beck and Townshend managed to get my hair to rise on the kneck instantly til Bill came along - liked his humour, his sonic energy and his chops. When he plays I listen, always got tremendous musicians around him, so glad he's working and making the Yorkshire Puddin' rise again. Chop on.
Not seen this so Thanks for posting. People forget what’s a good vocalist Bill was. Always thought the 335 looked too big for him 😂 but boy could he play it. A guitar tone to die for. Brought back great memories of the Sheffield city hall gigs back in the day ❤
i remember watching this programme when i was at school and seeing Be-bop Deluxe on it....amazing. Thing we only got this programme in the Midlands and the North.
Loved Sister Seagull fron the BBD Futurama album along with Sound Track & Swan Song!! ...this was performed (So it Goes in 1976??) ..nvr seen or heard this version live....im gobsmacked!!
Love this band. Saw them 6 times, twice at the De Montfort in Leicester. Think this clip is from a show called “So it goes”. At the time it didn’t last long so got called “So it went”. Great band great music still works today.
In those days I went to many affordable concerts Sabbath zeppelin at knebworth priest hillage Rory Gallagher queen when they were a proper rock band rush the list is endless unfortunately I never got to see depop deluxe. As a guitarist who listens to all he is a special guitarist, singer, composer and musician. 👍
Heehee. One of the many benefits of being an old bar steward. You get to remember having the privilege of seeing these guys live. Oh yes. the 70's was good.
While it lasted it was an eye opener when ur 17… and different to what was happening at the time.. of course only Bill knew the future and he made it work because he could see the light.. I’m glad I had the chance at 17 and my teens were better because of BBD
Remember being mesmerised by this band many years ago. They didn’t have many hits, but I was always drawn to their musicianship and bill’s voice. Ironically their big hit, without love , he really didn’t like.
Still trying to figure out how he made those seagull cries at the end without digital technology, only been about 45 years.Love Bill Nelson music so underated
Saw the band in Leeds in 1973/4 ? I think that they were supporting Cockney Rebel. And a year later at the same venue BeBop Deluxe were headlining and would you believe that Cockney Rebel were a supporting act.
People move on.. it’s obvious to me Bill needed to find something that worked and maybe he only has short windows and then a new page..eventually solo worked for him..!!!!
Agree. Totally obvious by "Drastic Plastic" (saw that tour) that he was off in another direction. The Red Noise follow up only confirmed that. Lots of great music from the solo years if you ask me. Funny how some "fans" want to.put an artist in a box...
Bill Nelson is on a level that only a few musicians ever stand. Charlie Tumahai's bass playing is excellent on this live version of sister seagull. What a fantastic band they were.

Absolutely brilliant, something you'll never forget.
This is the era when musicians really played their instruments, Be Bop Deluxe the greatest underrated band ever😭so special to me I miss them!
Very very true ... ask ten people here in the US “who is Bill Nelson?“ and you’ll get back ten blank stares ... it’s criminal their success here was under the radar ... wish I had seen them live in the day 🙏🏼🎸
I agree with you 100%.
Me too
Late to the party, but not to Be Bop. Back in college (70's) a friend was playing an album in his dorm. Turned out it was Axe Victim. Been a fan ever since. USA here!!
Correct saw them many times brilliant
Fantastic band, so happy of the period I grew up in,we had nothing but we had everything ❤️ 😊😊😊
Beautifully said! 😢
Greatest guitar player and song writer ever, in my books.
Must have been difficult seeing as they split in 1978.
@@vmax4steve524 Oh these liars on RUclips
This song is amazing and the solo has been at the top of my favorites for over 40 years. The band was awesome and Bill is a true artist.
His guitar work and mixing in No Trains To Heaven, by far number one in my book. Yes a true artist.
Loved Gilmour, studied it nailed it,Gary Moore studied it nailed it Bill Nelson, live in the air age ,still working on it 30 years later,,,The most fantastic guitarist of them all, a toxic mixture of rock blues soul and jazz all at blinding speed but still melodic, see what I mean, the man is my all time hero,,
Bill Nelson should be as recognised as David Gilmour ,Jimmy Page ,Santana et all
I completely agree
Better than those
@Keith Donald Agreed. Another great guitarist named Randy Rhoads was influenced by Bill Nelson. You can hear it .
A true Artiste.
Be Bop are up with the best bands of all time easily!!!!
Lead vocalist is a darn good singer. Makes the audience feel what he's feeling. Love it!
Bill Nelson is sublime and nobody was cooler than Charlie Tumahai.
Genuine Maori tribesman. And a damn good bass player/backing vocalist.
I second that.
Guitarist Randy Rhoads listed Bill Nelson as one of his guitar heroes which got me interested in Be Bop Deluxe.
Be Bop Delux were more than their albums..They were great live..Thankyou for this video...!!!
Grew up with this band blasting out of my car stereo 😍, really miss his fills from the studio version but a great performance.
There was/is a tribute band whose guitarist did do the fills; and I've seen a more recent clip of Nelson doing them as well.
WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME IN MY LIFE MEETING THE LOVE OF MY LIFE AND THE MUSIC AND EASY GOING LIFE JUST WISH THEM TIMES BACK BUT BLOODY GOOD BAND SAW THEM A COUPLE OF TIMES NEVER WELL DONE 👏
Lovely song, great band and Bill's amazing guitar playing and tone......so underrated.
Their Music Etherically Mythical, Sonic and Mystical Like Some Sort of Transporter Between The Soul and Mind.
My favorite by them. Just brilliant.
Does anyone realize Bill has over 120 cd's out, and still puts them out? He's supposed to have a 6 cd box of all new material out by the end of November
What a unique sound they had. Loved them.
One of Yorkshires finest . one bill nelson
Shouting out for Charles Tumahai, Orakei, Auckland NZ, always grinning like “every note was a joy” said Bill.
Loved Charlie Tumahai. Great, happy spirit, always dancing, marvellous bass player
RIP Charlie
I so miss this band playing live...they were just incredible...still got my ticket from Feb 76 I think..de montfort hall Leics
me too
I saw them on in 1976 on their "Sunburst Finish" tour at St George's Hall in Bradford.
Can't beat the version of this song on Live! In the Air Age. In fact, you can't beat anything on Live! In the Air Age. Love it as much now as when I bought it in 1978. With the Covid lockdown, my hair is now almost as long as it was then, too! Catching up to the presenter in this video.
Yes me to Feb 76 Portsmouth Guildhall with the love of my life
I was there at demontfort hall in 76 also.wonderful band.
Brilliant song from their second album, I have them all and love every track.
Never ages.....sublime.....
This is great posting- Classic Be Bop track and what a group yes Bill was very special but the rest of the band were too- met Bill twice and he was such a nice guy too- my truly first love!
An incredible band! Been a fan since the first!
Bill nelson had more talent in one hand than anything around nowadays
Sister seagull, oh you're flying me too high
Feels so dizzy underneath your open skies
And it's strange the games we play to hide the crime
Sister seagull you're the reason I survive
I am a prisoner who has thrown away the key
My soul has vanished with the bird who flies so free
And the wings of change have spread themselves o'er me
Sister seagull you're the reason I survive
I am waiting here for the tide to turn
And the pathways of the air to open
Will you meet me there
By the golden stairways to the clouds
To the clouds
I am a changeling
Like the wind across the waves
Though in the end there will be nothing left to save
I will return one day
With all the love you gave
Sister seagull you're the reason I survive
I survive
I survive
I seen them on don kirshners rock concert i was about ten they blew my mind there music chemistry and im a brother sad they are not more popular unbelievable

Wowsers, great stuff. Lead solo was authentic to the original. Thanks for sharing!
Such a great band i shed a tear 😢 when they broke up
Not seen this so Thanks for posting. People forget what’s a good vocalist Bill was. Always thought the 335 looked too big for him 😂 but boy could he play it. A guitar tone to die for. Brought back great memories of the Sheffield city hall gigs back in the day ❤
First Heard this on WNEW FM 102.7 on the Scott Muny afternoon show
Been looking for this one for a while........not disappointed but feel privileged to hear the group live.
Just CLASS.😊
takes me back great band back in the day nice post 👍👍🎶🎶
Be Bop Deluxe did a live album featuring this song. It is an experience to hear the expanded lead. It is amazing.
Live in the Air Age
I saw these live a few times in Newcastle in the seventies, one of my fav bands.
Have to agree. Got all their albums. Bill Nelson is a genius.
pure magic
Remember the recording. Made me a fan for sure.
i remember watching this programme when i was at school and seeing Be-bop Deluxe on it....amazing. Thing we only got this programme in the Midlands and the North.
Genius!
sends chills.
One he'll of a tight band enjoy every minute of bbd excellent.
Nice one, I haven't seen this before - thanks.
Loved Sister Seagull fron the BBD Futurama album along with Sound Track & Swan Song!!
...this was performed (So it Goes in 1976??) ..nvr seen or heard this version live....im gobsmacked!!
The version on Live! In the Air Age is the ultimate.
Sound Track is one of the greatest and most amazing rock songs ever written. The guitar at the last 3 minutes is unparalleled.
That guy delivers a song !
Art.
Phenomenal!!!💓🎶👏👏👏👏
LOVE IT
Seen them in local pubs , great band
Love this band. Saw them 6 times, twice at the De Montfort in Leicester. Think this clip is from a show called “So it goes”. At the time it didn’t last long so got called “So it went”. Great band great music still works today.
BeBop Deluxe Sister Seagull on So It Goes episode 6 7 August 1976
Awesome
open yer eyes Bill looks like he`s avvin a kip ! great track .
he skipped the obvious hook and blended it in. brilliant. the hook was awesome.
Rumor has it that Bill had to slay the Jolly Green Giant to obtain that guitar strap.
Got turned on to these guys in 1985, so good
In those days I went to many affordable concerts Sabbath zeppelin at knebworth priest hillage Rory Gallagher queen when they were a proper rock band rush the list is endless unfortunately I never got to see depop deluxe. As a guitarist who listens to all he is a special guitarist, singer, composer and musician. 👍
Helluva band.
Great! Thanks for sharing.
Fabulous Band 👍
This band would have been massive if punk hadn't came around at this time, so underrated
forgot how good they are.....damn you youtube, another saturday ruined....
Bill top guitarist
Great guitar
Tony Wilson pre-Factory records.
Heehee. One of the many benefits of being an old bar steward. You get to remember having the privilege of seeing these guys live. Oh yes. the 70's was good.
very very good.............................................................
He makes little seagull sounds at the end 5 stars
They should have been big.
Great job lads
Reminds me of..The Fast Show💓👏👏👏
noice live version of BBD Sister Seagull
Sans être du génie ce guitariste a un talent et un feeling énorme. Je ne les connaissais étonnamment pas , malheureusement.
Reminds me of Dave Mason.
Great Band. 👍
Stuart Adamson bought me here.
Didn't know Willem Defoe could play guitar ! 😜
Stuartmonks xxxx
While it lasted it was an eye opener when ur 17… and different to what was happening at the time.. of course only Bill knew the future and he made it work because he could see the light.. I’m glad I had the chance at 17 and my teens were better because of BBD
i like the 1975 version of BBDs SS on BBC live best!
Way back when drugs were proper and music was proper , when food was cheap and petrol was pennies ! Excellent underrated band .. awesome
Remember being mesmerised by this band many years ago. They didn’t have many hits, but I was always drawn to their musicianship and bill’s voice. Ironically their big hit, without love , he really didn’t like.
Bill likes his hollow body Gibson's
WOW.
Little remembered is a young Willem Defoe and Tim Reid before they made it as actors. A good version of what Johnny Depp thought he was then, too.
@carlsagan lives That's the happiest I've ever seen Little Willem.
Still trying to figure out how he made those seagull cries at the end without digital technology, only been about 45 years.Love Bill Nelson music so underated
Echoplex. Tape driven over multiple heads. Tommy Bolin used one often. Jimi Page as well. The 1st Echo affect. Used on instruments and PA’s.
A real toe tapper!
Randy Rhoads was a fan of Bill Nelson.
Pure Genius.
and Parker Stevenson on drums!!!
Are you sure, that looks like Simon Fox, the drummer with BBD from Futurama until the end?
Could anyone tell me what Bill Nelson's amplifier was or what brand of effect he was using ? He seemed to me to be beyond his time.
Very different from the album version, kinda more laid back.
Wow! The band name turned me off back then and I never listened to them back then. Big mistake rectified...
Saw the band in Leeds in 1973/4 ? I think that they were supporting Cockney Rebel. And a year later at the same venue BeBop Deluxe were headlining and would you believe that Cockney Rebel were a supporting act.
Similar to Rush opening for Rory Gallagher and then, eventually, Rory opening for Rush.
@@Grimenoughtomaketherobotcry ......very few acts cared to share the bill with Rory since he invariably blew them away!
They do not seem as much at ease here as usual.
People move on.. it’s obvious to me Bill needed to find something that worked and maybe he only has short windows and then a new page..eventually solo worked for him..!!!!

Bout time ppl looked past the old dragons clap page to see the real great guitarists bill n rory have more colour more passion
No digital effects computers but they made beautiful music.
His guitar is out of tune after the solo..he used really light strings then I think...great player😊
You can't buy class
Bit old now, but makes no diff.
The song doesn't impress me much, but he is a very good guitarist.
