Although this live recording occasionally sounds a bit rough, "Modern Music" simply is one of the best albums ever released. And Bill Nelson is a genius. Full stop.
What a great band, and performance. Bill Nelson can play any style like he owns it. He's one of the most prolific recording artists of all time. He's still doing three to five albums a year. Nelson is a brilliant guitarist, writer, lyricist, recording engineer, and producer.
The true talent of a musician, always shows itself on stage. These guys were the real thing. What you heard on vinyl, they easily played live; only better. They were truly magnificent; Bill's compositions stellar. It's a sad testimony that this dynamic no longer exists in music today........ the masses, like sheep; following robotics. Thank you Be Bop Deluxe; for a life worth enjoying while we could.....
Back in the day when there was quality television programming and even higher quality musicianship. I would argue that has to be one of the best rock intros and outro too. I can't stop watching this!
BBD to me that is the best rock/modern music band ever to be published and pressed. Ever. This is based on a rating of proficiency or expertise across a spectrum of categories ranging from natural talent/musicianship to musical interpretation, composition style,, grasp of music theory, /use of imagery/lyrical intelligence,, to production methods, persona/ presence /personality to music quality and band cohesiveness, etc. Of the 22 categories rated, many of which are subjective of course, BBD scores high on virtually all of them. Bill Nelson is a true visionary, a musical genius, with a unique yet eclectic musical style and a humble, honest and warm personality. A Goat amongst goats.
The world simply did not realize what it was witnessing at the the time. The genius was clear to some of us, the rest of the world is still catching up.
Me too.. and for playing with such a melodic fluidity that I could never get anywhere near. I also never understood how he wasn't in the main guitarist conversation. Total hero!
A great live take on a couple of tracks off "Modern Music" A full listening of this album from beginning to end leaves no doubt as to Nelsons humor', wit, and musical brilliance
My mate's favourite band back in the day but I liked them enough to buy their album too. Wow, they did some great stuff. Takes me right back to Holgate school in the 70s and finding my way in my teenage years.
whistle test was a fantastic music show, in fact there used to be quite a few in the 70's 80's. the only shame is that John Peel wasnt more involved with music on TV, he'd have had a kick ass TV show, but whispering Bob did a great job too of getting a wide range of bands onto OGWT and i dont recall a dud among them.
Kinda funny. There are are days when I can't remember what I had for breakfast, and yet, I've just sang all the words to songs I first heard 40 odd years ago. Maybe it's the whisky I've just drank. Don't care. That was great. Big thanks for posting.❤
Totally brilliant band. Modern Music remains one of my top favourite vinyl albums of all time, which getting a bit worn out now through the repeated playing!
Just in case anyone else wants to know, as i did, i found the answer: Mick Close www.billnelson.com/forum/william-s-world/who-was-the-second-guitarist-in-the-early-line-up-of-bbd-that-appeared-on-whistle-test-he-wore-dark-glasses

That album lives up to its title !!
Still, ALL Be Bop Deluxe albums are timeless classics !!
I saw this band twice, 1975 and 1976. Unbelievably good. Yorkshire's best export.
No that would be Joe Cocker!

Back when players actually played.Btw what a kick ass drummer.R.I.P. Charlie on bass
I saw them in concert in 1978 in Cleveland. Fantastic show! Drummer Simon Fox inspired me to keep playing drums to this day.

I'm a 56 year old Norwegian, and a true music lover, but this guys has completely gone under my radar. Love'em, what a guitar player!
Be sure to get "Modern Music" its perhaps their best album.

Agreed Richard !
Bill Nelson is a genius on the guitar and musical composition. For me the greatest guitarist of all time
Not a bad singer too !
Wow! Fresh as ever. Never received the praise they deserved imo.
Fantastic band track and memories of a 17 year old boy ❤️❤️❤️❤️ in the youthful days of the 70s
Thanks Bill ❤️
How Bill Nelson isn’t universally recognized as one of the very greatest guitarists of all time is just sad.
There's plenty that are better. He may be technically good but he's bland with it, just like his songwriting with its weak melodic content.
FUCK YES....one of the best bands to come out of the '70's...
The world simply did not realize what it was witnessing at the the time. The genius was clear to some of us, the rest of the world is still catching up.
It’s your fault my spare bedroom is full of semi acoustic guitars, Mr. Nelson. Yorkshires finest as always ❤.
Me too.. and for playing with such a melodic fluidity that I could never get anywhere near. I also never understood how he wasn't in the main guitarist conversation. Total hero!
Amazing group and fantastic quality for something from this time...thanks for this post.
No problem - glad you enjoyed it
amazing live bbc studios broadcast of BBD in their prime form!!
the drum intro is superb
Absolutely Tremendous!
what a great clean tone...not distortion...just the right amount of overdrive
I also really like the incorporation of the Flanger effect on Terminal Street, musical bliss.
RIP Simon Fox. A truly masterful drummer.
Agreed a fantastic drummer - RIP
Great performance, and in particular what a superb bass segue from Forbidden Lovers into Terminal Street.
I’ve always loved that bass segue. I don’t know why, but it’s brilliant
sounds like Barry Adamson from Magazine might have bee influenced

Fantastic!
Fell in love with the Modern Music album way back in the day. Could've been a really successful band.
Bill Nelson... The Steven Wilson of the 1970's. #Genius
GREAT OBSERVATION! AND ACCURATE!!!!
I love this song, great drum opening, finishing with Terminal Street. Modern Music is a classic.
Modern Music is actually my favorite album of all time. Just spectacular.
It’s certainly up there with mine. And to think, many people have never even heard this album 😢
November 13, 1976 at the Forum in Inglewood Ca. The best I have ever seen. Ever.
Was them a few times and were excellent.
Love the drummer, he's killing it.
Simon Fox - a brilliant drummer !
Really love the album.First exposure to Be Bop Deluxe.
@@LBOYLE18Sadly we lost Simon today 😢🙏 R.I.P.

Who's the rhythm guitar player?
I'm not sure who it is - I've trawled through everywhere and can't seem to find who it is !
who is the 2nd guitarist on this recording? I don't remember him in BBD?
Sorry I'm not sure who this is

I know.this is a year late, but his name was Mick Close, he played live gigs with BBD during the Modern Music tour.
