No one in musical history has the volume of music Bill has written and produced. I started getting into his music from the bonus album, Sounding The Ritual Echo and forward. Then I worked on his earlier Be Bop Deluxe from that beginning. Bill is sadly underrated and there is no one that comes close to him. He’s beyond belief incredible.
My friend Andrew, deceased for about 18 years now, introduced me to BBD in about 1976, when we were 15 years old. He was an avid guitarist. I had no instrumental talent, but loved the music. We saw Styx as a warmup band for BBD in NYC. To this day BBD has a special place in my heart, and I love their music. Miss you Andrew.
So much Respect and Admiration for Bill Nelson, Be Bop Deluxe and John Leckie for their work and determination to be able to have got that all down on tape for us to Enjoy then, now and tomorrow!
Still play Sunburst, its just one of those albums from that era that stuck with me. Fortunately also saw them play at a small regional hall.Great stuff.
Randy Rhoads said in an interview before his passing he was inspired by BBD, So I started listening to Sunburst Finish and fell in love with the material on it. That was in "1985 . Thank you Randy Rhoads , & Bill Nelson .
This is 45 mins of everything. Being a proud Wakefield guy myself, it just makes you smile inside & out. Bill is Still a vastly underrated talent & not spoken of enough.
Come on bill excellent album’s, stunning stage shows and now your giving us wonderful insights to your masterpieces! Brilliant!!! Can’t get enough of it ! Now please , I think I speak for thousands when I say please please please get the boys back where possible and give us one more tour ! (And maybe another live album?)rip Charlie 😢
I've been a huge fan of Bill's work for over 40 years...and John Leckie's almost as long. 'Sunburst Finish' is a sublime album, and it's wonderful to hear the story behind it's creation. Thanks for posting :)
Me too, never stopped listening to Nirthern Drram, Be Bop Deluxe, Red Noise and Bill's solo work. Great to be 40 yrs on and his work still available....living the dream!
@@mrmjb1960 I conducted a personal campaign to make sure everyone in my circle of friends heard "Modern Music" in 1976-77. Every single one was a convert. BBD had a brief exposure on "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" in '77, but the sound was awful. The death of the band when Charlie Tumahai was deported led to the solo career of Nelson, which was not as accessible in some ways. BBD did have a long-lasting impact amongst its fans, millions of them I dare say.
My step dad used to get high and play his records loud in the 70s. Modern Music was one of those records. So magical as a kid to hear. When I got older I pursued the rest of course and they became one of the most influential band of my life.
But it's so true. I think we get caught up in all the techno babble, but John nailed. I saw the band at the Dagenham Roundhouse as the support for Cockney Rebel. Happy days.
I love Be Bop still have all the original Vinyls , used to drift off to sleep late at night then waking up with my headphones on , magical times always heard something different every listening Thanks Bill 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
I have just sat here for 45 minutes and enjoyed every moment of this fascinating film. What great insights into this iconic album. John and Bill are legends. Well done Cherry Red for making this superb film on an incredibly underrated band.
I first came across Be-Bop Deluxe as a youth when babysitting for a neighbour. Up until then I my music influences were from my brother who was into Cream and Floyd and Clapton etc. But upon listening to Sunburst Finish I was mesmerised. I had found MY music and thereafter, bought every album and went to see them live on at least three occasions. There is one thing that bugs me though...I was a big fan and my mate was a so, so fan. When Live in the Air Age came out and I put it on, just before Ships in the Night you could hear a couple of random notes played on the keyboard, then from the audience a lone voice shout out 'SHIPS IN THE NIGHT!' I knew straight away it was my mates voice and to be honest, that was the only track he knew whihc is why he shouted out. I was absolutely gutted that it wasn't me on that album for posterity.
Love Bill Nelson, the unsung hero ... the first time I heard Be Bop Deluxe was the summer of 1978, some of my guitarist friends at school would play a cover of No Trains To Heaven, It was a pretty impressionable moment for this young 13-year-old at the time, and I still get a shiver down my spine when I hear that track
Hammersmith Odeon 1976 - Sunburst Finish tour, fantastic show. What a great band and Bill Nelson a real axe hero. And a really nice bloke. Met him years later when I interviewed him for BBC radio.
Before I start - no, not that Andy Clark! What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning in bed, earphones in, catching up with the awesome Bill Nelson. Having been introduced to Be Bop Deluxe by a lad whose name I sadly now can’t remember (Kevin Fitzgerald maybe?), I went to see the band at Hull City Hall on February 17th 1976 as a very young and naive 18 year old. I’ve been a huge admirer of Bill ever since and his music still plays a big part in my life even though I’m now 63. Not quite sure how I suddenly got to be 63. I just wanted to pass on my huge thanks to you Bill. Thanks for your music and thanks for your integrity. A final passing observation. As well as the coincidence of being called Andy Clark, I’ve just found out that I share my birthday (18th December) with Bill. Sad that I know that, or even feel the need to mention that, I’ll grant you. So, next birthday, I shall be raising a glass to your good health Bill, with the most sincere thanks for all the pleasure you’ve given us all.
Bill is a wonderful guitarist and John produced a lot of great albums and listening to him it's easy to understand why he got the best out of the bands. Check Bill's playing on Live In The Air Age especially Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape.
Crying To The Sky - heard it as a teenager; cried - still makes me cry to this day . Wistful, romantic and beautiful. Saw Bill with his band a few years ago play it; needless to say, it had the same effect.
Enjoyed hearing their stories. Lovely guys. Huge fan of Be Bop. Bills lyrics alone are pure poetry, surreal dreamscapes indeed. And then there's the amazing music. 40 years on still listening.
One of my favourite bands ever..... Bill Nelson..... definitely one of my favourite player's ever..... a true legend..... I salute yous sir....thank you 👍
I'm still playing this baby 48 years later.Timeless....luckily saw them play a dance hall in my home town around about the time SF came out.Still can't believe it to this this day.
I was blown away the first time I heard them at the Great British rock festival at Olympia in 76. Great day with Bad Company, Nazareth, Ronnie Lanes Slim Chance. Amazing gig Bill Nelson was amazing live.
Great to see Bill in this video. Be bop deluxe still a favourite of mine. Hugely underrated band. Simply great. Best regards ,Bill, from Adrian in Sheffield South Yorkshire England 😀😺
It was 1975 and I was 15. I had just bought Futurama on the first day of release. I was walking out of the Record Bar in Wakefield. Guess who passed me walking in? Needless to say I got it signed. Far too overwhelmed to make understandable conversation with my ultimate idol. But Bill was fantastic. Asked me if I was going to the New Victoria Palace gig in London (which I was). The record Bar had hired a coach to get us all down there. Imagine letting a 15 year old bugger off to London by themselves for the day these days! Great show! And I also managed to buy Simon Fox’s broken drumstick for a fiver on the way home. Good times
in '74 I got hooked up to BBD forever Bill was one of the best guitarist I ever heard but I never overlooked Charlie,Simon,And Andy all amazing musicians
Bought this when first issued, and wore it out trying hopelessly to cop a note or two out of those fabulous solos. Never nailed any of it down of course, but was still inspired to keep on playing! The production on that album is absolutely brilliant too. I finally got to Be Bop Deluxe at Hammy Odeon on the Drastic Plastic tour and they didn't disappoint. Top work by Cherry Red (as usual) raising the profile of this fantastic album.
Bill Nelson, in a word? ARTIST! I came upon Axe Victim back around the mid-70s, and from the opening note I was all in! From there Futurama led me to Sunburst Finish. And when I picked up Modern Music I simply knew I was hearing one of the single most amazing works of composition yet to be delivered... PERIOD! Over the years I have purchased many of Bill's post-Be Bop works, and no matter what Bill is addressing and working on, there is always focus of vision. Thanks for all the great music and memories, Bill.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I first saw Be-Bob deluxe in my teens at Doncaster Top Rank and was immediately smitten with Bill's guitar playing and inventiveness and watched their gradual but certainly deserved rise in popularity. I became a fan, watched them in every local concert I could see and bought all the albums. I last saw them play at the Hammersmith Odeon where I certainly thought they had made it big then. Loved the Sunburst album, although my all time favourite is Axe Victim. They certainly formed an important part of my teenage years. Happy memories.
One of those bands that were never quite as big as we thought back then. It was basically the same people buying the albums when they came out so they reached the album top 20 for a week then disappeared after a month or so. I appreciate them much more now than I did back in the 70's but it's a bit too late to resurrect their careers I think :)

It always surprises me how awkward Bill feels when discussing his amazing music, always keen to promote his latest efforts. I wish he would realise most fans aren’t simply stuck in some heavy metal guitar solo time warp but are harking back to seminal music filled with emotion that coincided with the time that we were filling with testosterone and other chemicals. Just like Beatles classics for the teenagers before us. Bill your music at that time was not only brilliant on many levels but poignant in many peoples lives at a time when emotion ruled all else. Such a great band and album. BTW Live! In The Air Age, Bebop's live album is stunning. They were terrific in the studio, but they were a fantastic playing band as well.
Brilliant. I’ve been a huge fan of BeBop Deluxe since release of Axe Victim all those years ago. Bill is such a great musician who, like John Leckie, comes over as a really nice guy in this documentary. Wonderful stuff💫🎸👍
Loved this, fell in love with Bee bop Deluxe as a teenager,,big influence on my own playing,,,The shot of the Axe Victim cover reminding me of returning the white Hoyer les Paul a couple of years back to a group of fans who in turn returned the guitar to Bill himself.
I well remember seeing the band on the 1976 Sunburst Finish tour in Malvern and my 16 year old self being knocked out by the tube that Bill describes and of course by the band, the songs and the musicianship. Fantastic!
Sunburst Finish is a good name for an LP. I remember that Be Bop Deluxe were often played by John Peel. Kept on hearing them well into 1977 but eventually punk, mod, ska, new wave etc etc squeeze their airtime out.
picked bill up a bit later with red noise and solo album "Quit dreaming and get on the beam"..the single "do you dream in colour ?" is a bona fide classic
They're all part of Bill Nelson's extraordinary (and growing !) catalogue , Phil . I had 'Quit Dreaming' on a tape cassette . Played it till it was twisted and shredded ! I feel so privileged to now have and enjoy it on Vinyl LP and CD .

Enjoyed this interview, been a long time fan, was introduced to his music from a musician who went on to be one of rock's most famous producers, have the vinyl album "Axe Victim" I regard Bill as one of rock's all time best musicians and songwriter !
Wonderful. Really good to hear about the solo on Crying to the Sky coming from Bill’s raw emotion. It’s always been one of my favourite solos by anybody. I think it’s spellbinding.
This record has a very clear and certain reverb that the other records do not. Queens' Sheer Heart Attack has the same clarity and depth of reverb in certain places in the mix

Enjoyed this interview, been a long time fan, was introduced to his music from a musician who went on to be one of rock's most famous producers, have the vinyl album "Axe Victim" I regard Bill as one of rock's all time best musicians and songwriter !

Bill Nelson Music Legend
Axe Victim, Sunburst Finish, Drastic Plastic are masterpieces.
Indeed!
How to play the Electric Guitar - Bill Nelson....utterly magical.
Wonderful. Really good to hear about the solo on Crying to the Sky coming from Bill’s raw emotion. It’s always been one of my favourite solos by anybody. I think it’s spellbinding.
I had every Be-Bop Deluxe album, awesome band, the first song on my play list is Fair Exchange from Starburst Finish, killer record. Love you guys.
An amazing record and this is a marvelous documentary!
This record has a very clear and certain reverb that the other records do not. Queens' Sheer Heart Attack has the same clarity and depth of reverb in certain places in the mix
