Regarding successful steroid injections to get rid of pain, does how long the affected area was painful matter? I know sometimes you can have arthritis in the fingers for example, and not have any pain.
Hi, Yes you are absolutely right the arthritis can sometimes be there for years without causing pain. To answer your question, it doesn’t matter how long you have arthritis for, the steroid injection can be effective for pain control regardless the duration of your arthritis
Yes it does, if the joint has collapsed completely it’s very difficult to reliably place the injection into a very narrow collapsed joint space or maintain the volume in the joint, making it less effective in a severely arthritic joint
Short and to the point, thank you.
Thank you, Happy to answer any further questions here

base of thumb surgery mostly successful, although some replacement implants can be unstable, check with your physician
Does the severity of thumb arthritis have any bearing on effectiveness of steroid injection?
Yes it does, if the joint has collapsed completely it’s very difficult to reliably place the injection into a very narrow collapsed joint space or maintain the volume in the joint, making it less effective in a severely arthritic joint
@@healthyhand How would the doctor know if that was the case, by symptoms or an x-ray?
Via x-ray mostly
