Regular Content will resume tomorrow, I'm a little bogged down with the Quad Cortex Review.
    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

Hey everyone! Hope people get a lot out of this video. Thanks again Glenn for putting this out here. Apologies for the dust in some of the shots - we do keep the studio clean but we have 2 dogs here that sometimes run rampant!

I'd watched someone complain about all the iPad interfaces he'd bought that no longer work (thanks apple) - and had given up on the iPad idea. However, using a non-iOS specific interface seems to make sense. Thanks for planting the seed and showing the common pitfalls!

There are interfaces that connect direct to lightning which would help relieve some of the messy cable management. Apogee makes some really high quality stuff.
Also with Bias, JamUp and few other Amp modelers for iOS you can get some killer tones.

If you decide to give this set-up a try on a lightning port iPad, you'll need to get the official Apple Lightning to USB3 camera adapter. The inexpensive ones tend to be identified as unsupported devices when plugging into the iPad. One that I tried also only sent audio out from the iPad and would not input audio.

So what's the best hub for me to get to enable me to plug it into my Ipad? Also, since my Focusrite is powered by AC will I be good to go by just plugging my mic into my Focusrite and then my Focusrite into my Ipad? Gosh this is complicated!

I have an old iPad 4th generation. I use an iRig Pro that holds a 9 volt battery. Got me a small set of headphones too. I just need a little midi keyboard and I'm good to go at the cottage. The iRig lets my plug in a guitar or a microphone and since it has a 9 volt, it even supplies phantom power so I can use one of my condenser mikes that require it. I also have Korg Gadget on the iPad and with the Audiobus app, I can interconnect everything and rock out. Got me toys! Got me wife! Got me whisky and beer! All at the cottage. Life is good. Well, it would be better without covid.

I love this concept, but can't help but feel like most people who have a laptop... this wouldn't really apply. I mean, my laptop and a decent USB interface can do the same job. Still, for anyone whose only portable computing solution is a tablet, this is fantastic info to have and I'm glad it's out there. Kind of makes me want to buy an iPad to experiment with a setup like this.
I also think this video is a real testament to how home recording has been revolutionized in the past 20 years. I mean, with little more than my iPhone and an iRig 2, I was able to put together pretty decent demos that would've taken a lot more equipment and work when I was a kid and that tech didn't exist. The fact that you can make some pretty damn decent productions on less and less studio equipment is fucking unreal to me still and I love it.

How the hell do I do a cover? I plug my guitar into my Scarlett interface with reaper and I do the tone and all that shit and I play the song. I put one track to the left and right for the guitar. But for some reason it sounds like my guitar track is just slapped onto the original track no matter how much I adjust the audio.
So my question is, is it something I’m doing wrong, or should redo the entire song from the ground up, like record guitar, bass, program the drums realistically, and add the vocal track? Idk Glenn this shits so confusing and it makes me wanna quit like a lil bitch lol
    Cheers from Philly

Edit: I just went for these "tablet" solutions because I also like to draw.. otherwise I'd get just a laptop with a better processor and more ram. Tablets just don't have the juice to go crazy with plugins.

It’s the touchscreen. Also there are a lot of audio units (Auv3) that only exist on iPad. Some really cool stuff that utilizes the touchscreen in ways you don’t get on standard PC plugins. Plus the prices of these apps are a fraction of what you pay with PC plugins. Even companies like Waves and Fabfilter offer 1:1 versions of their plugins on iOS for 1/5 the price.

Good to know, but ultimately impractical. Apple's development of the iPad line is just not really the optimal choice when it comes to a mobile platform you can record and mix audio with. I'd rather get a Surface, which pretty much always comes with a keyboard that you have an option to remove, and use standard USB for a wider selection of compatible interfaces for basically the same cost and reduced cable clutter... while still running on battery. Even Lenovo laptops are pretty good in this regard as you can just flip them, use the touch screen and your off to the races with reduced hassle.
