- This is a simple and easy project where if everything goes well, it should only take five to ten minutes to complete. Now, you might be wondering, “why do I need a garage door lock?” If you have to manually open your garage door, then a lock is necessary. But, if you have automatic garage door openers, then adding a lock is optional. However, it can be an extra safety feature to ensure no one can open your garage door. A lot of people don’t know that your garage door openers are pretty easy for criminals to hack, especially the older door opener systems. The only thing that guarantees your door(s) can’t be opened from the outside, is a good, old-fashioned door lock to deadbolt it closed.

You gotta use self tapping sheet metal screws. You’re using machine screws which aren’t a good use in this scenario
use another hammer (just push it) on other side when removing the diecut piece. Less stress on mechanism.
How about a video showing an 'external' garage door lock for extra protection.
Hint: Gaffer tape the 'unlocked' lock to the door in the proposed location PRIOR to permanently fixing it in place and then run the door up and down to make sure the new lock doesn't hit anything. If all OK, you can fix it in the proposed location with confidence.

What about opening it when you return from vacation? That’s the part I’m looking for as my door came with the inside lock.
You would have to lock it from the inside before leaving on vacation. Then go inside the house into the garage and unlock the door before you could open it to park the car. It is a bit annoying but you can rest easy on vacation knowing that door is locked and cannot be opened from the outside.
@@thediygrunt I was looking for an outside application because I live in Florida and when I have to evacuate the garage is the only way I can get back in. My hurricane shutters, stupidly, only hand crank from the inside. And, uh, I’m not planning on being inside after the many storms have inundated some towns. But thank you!
@@khbow2810I think they have bolt locks like this that are remote.
What size drill bit did you use?
I don't remember the size if I had to guess probably 3/16 or 1/8 those are usually my go to bit sizes for pre drilling. Plus since its metal I was drilling then a drill bit that was metal rated most likely. Though I do remember the garage door frame being fairly thin and weak so maybe it was a normal bit.
