we are having a new home built which comes with this lock. Thank you for posting some good info on the unit making it easy to understand.
I love the idea of using that little forsner bit you used at 2:09.. very clever. And those long screws also are a great idea. I didn't realise that Schlage make 'finger print resistent' door locks. Excellent video. Thank you!
Lipstick trick was pretty dope😊👍 lol
Those are some really cool features of the Lock of being able to connect other smart home products to it.
Yeah, I was surprised how many features it could tie into
The company I work for has professional locksmiths on staff and we use this lipstick trick all the time if there's a lock that needs adjusting. Thanks!
Nice review and useful information. Thanks for sharing.
One of the best descriptive videos I've seen [on any topic]! Thanks!
Spot on! The key thing you mention here is if the deadbolt does NOT move freely this will SERISOULY affect battery life! I have this paired with the Ring alarm and works flawless! I have read SO many reviews saying battery life was 2months or less and that is because the lock is not "smooth"! On my main entry door that "cycles" at least twice (sometimes more) a day I have gotten a good solid 13months and just replaced the batteries before they got too weak before they needed to be replaced. Battery replacement is also VERY easy and does NOT require a re-pair to your hub or alarm system. I got this on "sale" for 169.00 almost 2years ago. Works great! As you stated it may require "special" tools to install as my install also required work and alterations using the EXTRA long screws that further increase the "kick-in" factor. Using the "standard" screws that are only a 1/2" to 3/8" long is WAY easy to "kick" these in! Using the 2 1/2" or 3" screws going into a stud makes it WAY harder to simply "kick" in. Great review!
Good overview. It’s neat to see how the technology is advancing.
I am sure gonna buy this smart lock.
Watching this again.
My savior, of door lock installs...I will thank the man upstairs for this.
Good job. I have a feeling that this will be quite helpful when I install my first in several days.
Planning for a move here soon, this adds another upgrade item to my list, thanks B-Rod.
Right on, brother. 2/1/14
I love the Schlage Connect. Only had one issue, enrolling it on the z-wave network, but their customer support walked me through the process. (It was totally my fault…) It's been working perfectly with SmartThings & Alexa.
Yeah, you've gotta be within 10 feet of the hub to get it paired, that got me at first
My issue was not waiting for like an extra second after entering the programming code. :) Their phone support was awesome.
You information is very helpful. Thank you.
Very informative and well produced. Thanks!
Really, REALLY good video. ✌️
Thanks!
Hi from Sweden....Just wanna let you know that I love this channel. ;)
Hej Hej!
Nice video man. Cheers!
Great review
Enjoyed as always and gave it a thumbs up as well ;)
Thanks for sharing your review 👍👍
I’ve been using the Schlage Connect for the over 3 years. Best smart lock out there. And I’ve tried the August and Kwikset Kevo. One thing about the Schlage’s battery life. On my main door where it gets used daily, the batteries lasted about 26 months before I had to replace them.
Is it ok to use original strike plate ?
Inquisitve m - Yes it is, as most strike plates are virtually identical in size. But you have to make sure the dead bolt clears the hole CLEANLY and easily. If there’s _any_ resistance when locking/unlocking the dead bolt, you need to adjust or shave the strike plate a little - or else the batteries will get drained very quickly or the motor will eventually get worn out. I used a Dremel to adjust my door frame and strike plate easily.
Lastly, one thing to note, if you do use your own strike plate, you may not be getting the same security Grade 1 rating, as the Schlage strike plates uses the extra long 3 in screws.
@@ONI1013. thanks.
Ours only last about 4 months with heavy traffic
@@tryphena2691 - Wow. One of our doors we use at least 20-30 times per day, and that one has lasted at least 18 months and still going. Perhaps your traffic is very high? Also, as we try to manually lock the doors ourselves when coming home (and even though it’s set on an auto lock timer), just to preserve battery life.
I like seeing the issues dealt with installing
Great video and explanation on how to install
Great Video!
Thanks for your help
Grate awesome information, Thanks
Love the lipstick trick. Will remember that one for the future. Thanks.
Thank you. Great video. You are awesome.
Nice!!!
Good review!
My name is Robert from Ghana thank for the good work u are doing bro
great video
7:25 you have just gained a new subscriber lol well done.
I've used Schlage's smart locks for years, the battery life is great! If folks will stop buying dollar store batteries they will last.
Thanks so Much!!
I’ve been enjoying the Fix This things that you’ve been doing lately. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Jason! It's been fun to bring in this side of the brand.
Excellent
Excellent how to video...even I can do it!!
Good explanation 👍👍👍
Nice video😮😊
One thing people often miss in the “hacking” topic is that many smart devices connect directly to your home network. It’s best, if possible, to separate them from your main network though, as often their security leave something to be desired. Some home routers have the option of using two SSIDs (like “Family” and “Guest” in your WiFi), that are separated from each other to prevent them from talking. If your router does this, use the feature! If you get deep into home automation, find a router that does it!
One cool thing with Z-wave is that the only thing actually on your network is the hub (Wink, SmartThings, etc). That’s great from a security standpoint!
Wont protect against shapeshifters
That lipstick trick is a really good idea
Again, the algorithm finds something I'll watch
Nice vid
thanks!
I love this channel😻😻
QUESTION: How good is the key part of the lock? Meaning is it easy to be picked? Thanks! Love your channel!
you can pick any lock, this is great, it can lock the door at a time of day or after it has been unlocked
Nicely done Brad! 👍👊
I really like the Schlage Connect except my zwave doesn’t work. I have 3 and only got 1 to connect to my SmartThings hub and Amazon Echo. But it has a strong motor, much better than kwikset and August which I had installed before. Both those units went thru batteries at fast rates. August integrated with Apple’s HomeKit seamlessly and worked great.
When buying one of these, only buy one that can be left open. Some will always extend to the lock position after :30. Problem being that the door can be ruined if door gets shut with latch extended.
Great video and answers all the questions. Just remember though that most entry is through a broken window. That’s right thieves break windows to get in. Also any door with a window in it is the least secure type of door. Break the window reach in and unlock the door. Good doors, good locks and an alarm system on the windows is the best.
Great info.. thank you!
Actually that is only the second best. 2nd amendment is the first best when it comes to dealing with these criminals
Hi! Bases on your experience, which deadbolt do you recommend for a 70mm door thickness
There still is a key slot that can be picked, so don't waste your money on any electronic locks that use a key as a bypass when the batteries get low. Go to mechanical entry deadbolt locks. I have had one installed on my two homes for over 20 years I just take it apart and clean and use lite lubrication to keep all the mechanical parts moving smoothly. I have one of the Lockey series locks. I use a six-digit code. You can install additional security pins to use 4 to 8 digit codes.
Hey Brad, great video but for future topics perhaps discussing which are best for metal doors?
As I’ve tried the Nest x Yale device but it wasn’t totally smooth. Kinda bc my door & jamb have alittle slack, if that makes sense. Another words there 1/8”-1/16” play/slack. That’s primarily my side door/outside utility door.
But for my inside lobby door leading to the basement I think I’ll try this Schlage device. It looks really cool & comes w/a built in keylock as well. The Nest DID NOT.
Thanks again, Brandon!
Good Review. Does the Schlage smart deadbolt have the capability of locking automatically when you walk outside? And if so, how do I program that feature. Thank you!
I don’t have a deadbolt lock on my door but want to install this. How do I get the curt ever measurements and how to make the cut outs in the door and the frame?
Lipstick is the bomb, used to use fingernail polish for slippage marks on helicopters.
Can I use the built in hub on echo show gen 2?
My old dead bolt is only 1-1/2” diameter and it’s set back 2”on center. Also my latch is the older style one and the hole is set back 5” what can I do in this case? Thank you love the video
I changed from right to left inswing door, now I can't re program it, any ideas?
which model is the one you discussed in the video? There are several that look just like that one. ..
Does it work with Google assistant? I can't get mine to connect.
How does it perform in very cold weather? And can you un locked at a distance for a certain amount of time?
Hi ...i have this lock installed and would like to know if i can extend the delay time for auto lock? I.e. i would like to extend the time it takes before auto locking
Great question browie!
Can you speak more about that Zwave network hub you mentioned? Is that with all locks?
Thanks for this excellent tutorial.
How do you assign an authorized user who can add and delete user codes?
great video, one question I have does it work with Alexa?
What’s the apps? I have the same Schlage connect. The apps I download doesn’t have Schlage connect 🤨 need help please
I looked at some of these and the actuator for the locks are not strong enough unless you have a near perfect closing door. I used the one that you turn the knob yourself.
Any idea if there is room to install a smart dead bolt and a smart lever lock all in the same door and can these locks be rekeyed just like a normal Schlage lock
Thank you so much for the video. Very helpful. I want to install this on one of my room doors but it obviously does not have an existing lock on it. What do you suggest?
You can buy a lock hole boring kit from home depot. Just need a drill
If inside the room, you could have a sliding bolt lock on it.
I got two questions. 1.- How durable can it be while being installed in a very hot places like in the Caribbean, where DAY temperatures along the year are between 25 and 35 Centigrades. In addition during rainy days it may get wet. My Front door faces East and the sun and makes things worse. 2.- During vacation times, bulglers can damage the from lock to the point of destroying completly. How easy to be destroyed...Can the door still be open. Thank you so much
Great video! Can you change the lock?
need to lock the door when door is close only. A times, I leave the door open for 1 to two hours. Does the auto lock feature knows when to lock the door (auto.lock should not be activate while door open)
I see you installed this lock on a left hand swing door. I have a right hand swing door and can not get my to trough dead bolt. My question is, is there a specific lock for right hand and left hand swings or does one lock fit both?
Very cool! Does it tie in with IFTTT as well?
Yeah, it can tie in through the hub or Smart Things I believe
I watch vids like this and I think a lot of people will think this is a simple installation. It ain't!
It's simple if you have been doing this stuff for a few years, but most people I know don't have the knowledge or tools to do this job properly.
Just because a guy in a video makes it look like a breeze, don't be fooled. I am an experienced do-it-yourselfer, and i've added closets, done electrical and plumbing... mostly self taught. (I always do things according to code. Look up code online.) NOW I can do stuff really well,. But I made a ton of costly and time consuming mistakes over the years.
Here's some of what I've learned:
1 - Prepare to go to the hardware store at least 3 times for any job. There's always something you didn't realize you don't have.
2 - Do you have a big roll-around tool cart? Is it stocked with drills, chisels, saws, sanders, staplers, bits, electrical testers, romex, plumb bobs, electrical connectors, plumbing parts, etc.?
3 - It's almost guaranteed that your job will vary from what you see in vids. My door jamb is metal, not wood. The old hole from my old door lock is way too small to fit the new lock. Do you know how to make a hole bigger? There's nothing but air for your drill to start into.
The only way to get handy is to do a lot of jobs and make a lot of mistakes. Just be careful. READ, READ, READ! WATCH, WATCH, WATCH! LEARN, LEARN, LEARN! Buy magazines, books, etc.
Today, I drilled a small hole in a piece of wood with a brand new drill bit. Within 10 seconds of drilling the bit broke and hit me in the scalp! Of course I was wearing protective glasses, but it didn't protect my scalp. Fortunatly, it was just a scrape. My point is: wear protective gear - eyewear and ear protection.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
The biggest problem with any dead bolt system is having a cheap wooden door frame the can be kicked in with you foot easy!! The deadlock works 100% better if you have a steal frame. Trust me I took a steal bedframe did a few cuts and nailed it to my door frame. That did the job and I had better protection from someone just kicking the door open ! As you know living in New york is not easy!!😂😂😂
When i enter my house, i Close the door but it doesnt close automatically the lock, What can i do ?
Good vid
Edit: yay im second
how hard is it to install in a steal door that does not have hole in door yet
New to smart home stuff. What kind of “hub” are you talking about and where can you get one?
Link 2 I think is what he said
Currently have a deadbolt and a lock on the handle. Just trying to understand- switching to this type of locking mechanism allows you to only have a dead bolt..(one lock on the door) any smart locks out there that have a two lock mechanism?
So you put 2 striking plates on the frame ?
Does the app send push notifications for tamper or break-ins as well as sounding the alarm on the lock? I cannot find this anywhere.
Steven Severson yes, you can program it to have the alarm go off if it senses someone is trying to pick the lock. I’m not sure of the details as far as if a good picker can override or bypass, but CNET’s review mentions the pick tampering alarm setting.
5:35 Nice.
Any smart locks have a fob? Would be nice if my arms are full to have it unlock just be getting close with touching it.
This is a great video. My issue is that I cannot chisel my way through the door since it is all metal framing. As a result, I have to completely remove the metal component to make this work I believe.
Wont protect against telekenisis
Cordless (or corded) Dremel tool with a metal grinding attachment should work in your case.
I've had that same exact deadbolt since 2016 and it has never let me down. Battery life isn't the best (I go through a set every 60 days or so) but I do love that it connects to Smartthings.
Oh wow, 60 days isn't a lot. Does the bolt rub in the opening when it engages?
I have that issue during the summer (my door is an old wooden door) but not as much during the winter, but I do average about 60 days with it either way. I don't think that's so bad though. The convenience of my door locking automatically, unlocking when I go to bed and click Good Night on smart things, and it showing me the status at all times is worth a set of batteries every two months. I love when I come home from grocery shopping and I don't have to juggle keys to open the door. That alone makes stocking up on batteries worth it.
@@vincentferrari yes! I've been u locking the door from my truck and walking in with my hands full of bags. Soooo nice!
@@vincentferrari I called Schlage about the battery draining so fast. It locked me out twice, so I had to do something. Schlage told me to disconnect the z-wave feature. I did, and the battery lasts a long time now. I didn't use the unlock by phone feature anyway. Still, people who want that feature... be aware.
Eddie K unfortunately that wouldn’t work for me since I use SmartThings but thanks for the tip!
How do you reprogram the lock after removing from an old door and reinstalling it into the new door?
Schlage install video said not to install the reinforcement bracket if there is a window on the side and i saw you did any experience. I'm also looking to install but have a window.
What kind of drill bit was used to drill out the rounded corners of the strike plate?
Forstners bit
I have Schlage BE468 smart lock also. My batteries (4- AA batteries) only lasts 3 months. A family of 5 and we never use a key to get in, always the number pad.
Also can this work with Nest smart home items?
Hi there. Can I lock the door from upstairs through the app? Thanks
Would it be good for an air bnb? Could we send out a temporary password that could be changed once the guests are done
Does this work on metal faced outside doors?
