- I SANDED MY DRIVER FACE TO MAKE IT ILLEGALLY POWERFUL ... DID IT WORK!?I MADE MY DRIVER FACE ILLEGALLY THIN TO GET MORE DISTANCE... DID IT WORK!? We all want to hit longer drives. but the rules of golf dictate that a Driver can only offer so much performance in order to not be an Illegal Driver. But I thought... how far can we push this... so I sanded down the face of a Taylormade Driver to see if even by taking a little thickness off we can produce higher ball speed and ultimately bomb long drives. Can I hit a 300 yard drive after making the driver face thinner? lets find out... and lets do it now!

Anybody who wants to see what the effects of a months lock in can do to a normally sane, well relatively, man can be just need to watch this vlog😂🤣 excellent, love it 👊🏻
James: ".....cos you shouldn't be missing the net. It's a big ol' net!!".
Liam from Golfmates: "Hold my beer!!".
Hahaha
@@JamesRobinsonGolf James, have you watched his latest video?
He actually manages to miss the screen on his simulator!
Only Liam could lose a ball on a sim!!
#Legend
I tried this several years ago, I did not get anymore distance. I feel I even loss ball control.
Pitching wedge shank
You’re using wood sandpaper and you didn’t take that much off
I thought it might have improved on distance . Fun to watch in your Amen garden. Pure fun 👍👍
"Not a metalworker"? Are you sure? You looked right at home in your sunglasses and gardening gloves! 🤣
Hahaha
I sent my M3 to a business in Arizona, for "guaranteed" improvements. I questioned their cnc milling process due to the twist face. I was re-assured that it wouldn't be a problem. Had the face taken to 890 C.O.R. based upon swing speed. Took 2 weeks, which wasn't too bad. First 5 swings saw the worse duck hooks ever produced by a 6 hcp golfer. The 9th swing destroyed the face of the driver. Inverted the face and became useless. DO NOT ATTEMPT!! Fair to say, I already had a brand new fitted SIM driver, so it was merely an experiment. Costly one at that though. Keep up the great daily content James!! Stay safe as well. Cheers.
... you took a club with not much bulge and roll, and the process, probably took it past flat. And the face became uneven. Done with the normal configuration faces, it flattens the face taking out or limiting the bulge and roll.
Not all players need gear effect.
What if you have an 85mph swing speed?
Here's an idea after lockdown go back to the 80s persimmon woods and old irons with Ballater balls for a round of the top stones see what scores you can get be great video to see the difference from modern day equipment
James, that was a great video, really enjoyed it. I bet that has got a few people thinking!
I actually tried this! However I have a shop with the necessary equipment to make this happen. I carefully shaved the groves off the fave uniformly. Thinking the face might cave in I injected high density foam into the head! It does go farther with a unique sound. So it works!! Thanks James! I have my sand wedge on the bench grinder ready to remove grooves from 5 lines up! Whoa! 😷🏌️♂️
Omg James!
When you say dont try this at home.......
You built every guys dream driver..... I think we will see alot of shiny face drivers on the tee box now🤷🏻♂️
There is someone out there who will do a custom finish on your driver and hybrids. So you could do this and no one would be the wiser.
Not that I would, just say'in.
Brent Jewell does matter if you do it. The face is at the limit for a reason. If you sand it more than 1/10 of a millimeter and use it for 20 rounds it’ll crack. I had it happen to my old m1 lol don’t try this
@@coletegano7705 What if you only have 85mph swing speed?
James. Well I learned something new. It was a successful experiment. You also made me laugh.
Quite an interesting topic. I think you are the first person to conduct an experiment. Well done!
Really interesting! Great idea!
Good vid as always James! Be interested to see the difference in distance etc. between soft vs forced shots when you're between clubs - particularly inside about 140 yards to the green. Will a controlled PW travel much further than a hard 56?
You are insane but cool and crazy. It is funny what we do when we can’t go out. This is getting interesting, what will you do next? Can’t wait to see. LOVE IT.
The more I see of your vids, the more I realise you’re bonkers. My kind of guy. Ha ha. Great stuff.
Love it! Great content. 👍
hey, loved the vid. I have an old persimmon ben hogan driver. I wonder how it would perform with a fancy modern shaft.
Want to see James do housework in those gloves haha
Great job on the driver. I would like to see what the difference would be if you shorten the shaft on both drivers and irons. I’m from Canada and will be golfing in 2 weeks if all goes well. Going to buy a TS 2 driver. Not hitting my Taylormade R 1 very well. Thought I would try something different. My hcp is 15. Keep safe.
Yes! On my way to Homedepot for some grinding wheels.
Good interesting test and it looks like Chris didn’t find the centre of the face too often 😂😂(sorry Chris)
Grass patch from your Hitting Mat still hasn't recovered I see, Good work Robbo 😂😂
Fun video as always, James. An interesting study of the effects of using a sander for an hour on club path. 4.5 R post-sander vs. 0.2 L pre-sander. The takeaway is, if you want to hit a draw, use a sander for an hour before you play! It'll weaken your right arm enough to get that nice inside move! :) Hope you're staying safe and sane, man! I mean...not TOO sane. You're using power tools on your golf clubs, after all. 🤪
Hahahaha my arm still hurts now
James “Outlaw” Robinson LOL 😂 Next, can you show us all how to hop the fence to get a round in during stay Home orders? 😉 Cheers!!
I did this to the prior year m1. The adjustment slide wasn’t staying in place when hit and the face was in a bad way from many bad shots learning to hit it. It was shiny and new looking but became really loud and hollow sounding. I painted it to stiffen it back up and hot glued the adjustment in place. I also shortened the shat to my 5 wood length and use it regularly. It’s my Frankenstein
Ah good timing just going to watch this while I have dinner
Enjoy your dinner!
Awesome video! Get my belt sander out right now!!
😝😝😝
Actually, I like my TS3 too much to do that to it... My baby!
Oh well, it was a fun idea regardless.
Thanks for the fun video James. The effect on that driver was greater than I expected!
Groove sharpening on wedges. Best way and does it work?
James, maybe steady the driver head first prior to sanding? Great experiment! Fun!
I'm using the same 2017 M1 with the grafalloy blue shaft. Probably wont take the sander to it......
This provided much needed entertainment
I like where you have put the 100k RUclips plaque. Well Done again 👍
Interesting results. I was sceptical before watching that it would make any difference!
I’d like you to try next using power tools to sharpen an old wedges grooves to see if you can increase spin rates to same as a new wedge.
Also be good if you could put your recently learnt green keeping skills to use, borrow a professional mower from your club and do a tutorial on making your own garden putting green .
Great video mate, ai l like to see when you make your iron grooves extremly sharp and deep, what will the affect of that be on carry and spin on the greens
James entertaining video. Where did you get the practice net, desperate to find one but almost impossible online in the U.K.!
Not stupid, very fun and interesting. I look forward to your posts. You should do a grip size test. I keep wondering if it really matters very much performance wise or if it is all just marketing?
Actually very helpful. I bought a used rogue hybrid n callaway preowned. Normally they look like new but this one had a very scratched face from a lot of use. I was concerned it was damaged but now I think I can use a fine grit sanded just to republish the face and should not affect it. Obviously I am an amateur player so if it is slightly thinner it won’t matter. Update: After sanding to make it smoother there was no positive difference, just cosmetic although I can’t test spin and it did go straight.
Lockdown fever kicking in now mate 🤣
Well interesting though, every day is a school day!!
good vid --- looks to me like a lesson for everyone that perhaps some portion of the pros might have hot drivers. Rumors certainly swirl about
Drivers get tested on tour mate
@@JamesRobinsonGolf My info could be outdated, but last i heard they weren't testing everyone; it was "selective" testing. The last article i saw stated that the new CT rules had a CT limit of 239 microseconds, but they let them get by if it doesn't go over 257 microseconds. You gotta believe the big boys know that the drivers they're giving their staff players are right on the very edge as compared to us mere consumers (of course, i do believe that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference unless you can swing it over 100 mph anyway). It'd be interesting to see what your new shaved driver measured at (with no more speed than you got, i'd bet it's still legal)
Lol still hurt to see that m1 have a sander taken to the face. Lol I think I did play my m2 so much that it cracked. Bless Taylormade and there reps had a new driver in the bag a few days later. Great video.James what is the major difference In the rocket 3 and 5 woods? I duno what to order? Loved my m6 3 wood. Just wasn't the rocket version.
Glad you didn't miss the net!
I always wondered about this!! 😂😂
So it does work 😛
You're now part of science James
yessss
New subscriber here, please keep sanding and see how much more ball speed you can get!!
Will do Trevor!
Wow you just carry on !! Just hit it already
It’s called building suspense Travis... chill
What launch monitor do u use
Hi James. Enjoy your content and i’ve always wondered what would happened if COR was increased. Part of me wonders why manufacturers don’t sell non conforming drivers to us chumps as I’m sure a good majority of all people who play don’t play in comps etc.
One thing I cant make sense of is the numbers you’re putting up 263 carry from 151.4 ball speed with 2830 spin and 12.7 launch. If you put that into the Flightscope Optimiser you don’t get 263 (unless you set the altitude to 7000 ft above sea level). I am trying to educate myself a on launch monitors etc so I would be interested to know.
Keep up the great content! Your neighbours clearly trust your ability to hit that net!
Broke my heart. That M1 is a year newer than the one I'm playing.
hbyrdut - 2016 is better anyways
@@ultimatejay Thanks. I feel a little better now.
hbyrdut -watch this ruclips.net/video/FB0mZQHLh3c/видео.html
@@ultimatejay I guess newer isn't always better.
What a waste of a great driver!
For better quality control, perhaps placing the head in a vise and then you can use two hands on the grinder. Nice location for the plaque.
Nice to see your girlfriend let you use her gardening gloves! #safetyfirstiamnotgoingtolie! Loved the vid!
I have done it before as an experiment with an old Dunlop driver but used an angle grinder and got the face down to below the grooves, the results were astonishing.
So it actually worked??
@@David.lovesU yes, very well
Sorry James I was wanting you to miss that net 🤣🤣
Does it correct if you have a slice?
James your net is on the wrong way round black panels to the front 👍🏻 I’ve got the same one
What did you use to get your numbers
no fore left on this occasion but them people behind the net are boarding their windows up. should have took the head off would have been easier to hold and sand. try a good 80 grit paper that will fetch the face down quicker. keep the vlogs coming
lol never knew it would affect it
Well, it might be illegal for the masses, BUT, never fear, ALL the PGA golfers drivers have faces that thin, and the best part; the golf companies KNEW how to make it look like a regular driver off the rack! So, ALL the time you are THINKING; those guys are SO fit, and have great swings. JUST KNOW --- the COR help they ARE GETTING from the companies while you pay premium prices for NOT EVEN close to what driver -they WERE GIVEN!
Nothing like a conspiracy lol
Will you be passing on the results of this experiment to the Australian cricket team? They too like tampering with sandpaper.
It was under duress mate. Fair go.
Is the sander the new give away will be more useful than any other golf related item in the current lockdown. Appreciate the effort in entertaining us each day and hopefully will all be back on the course soon and the DIY equipment goes back in the tool chest!
I'd like to stay and comment but I'm off to the store for sandpaper.
Noooo
@@JamesRobinsonGolf I'm now into my third putter that I've completely disassembled during this lockdown... including the two-ball disks and inserts. I think I'll also switch to "refurbishing" drivers now....
does polishing the face reduce the spin rate ?
Just need some touch up paint now!🤣
I’d be over the moon with those numbers on the course never mind in the garden
Get someone mechanically inclined to mill the face down 1 mil! At least after all this stay at home stuff. That would be awesome! Stay safe!
I love your "idiots like me do this so you don't have to!"
I speak the truth lol
I am gonna try this at home!!!!
Sanding it down may weaken the structure of the face and with metal fatigue it will most certainly break (over a period of time).
Definitely
I've seen one of these shave the face videos before. They machined it down. I wonder if you break yours too? Probably not as you wouldn't be able to take much off with a sander.
This was my “logic” buddy lol
@@JamesRobinsonGolf It's very common in the USA to take your driver for machining. But they do break! I couldn't swing hard in the back garden anyway as I would be terrified of a miss with a 140mph ball! LOL
Hi. Do you know a company in the UK or Europe doing the shaving? Best regards, Alex
“Face could cave in... like my content sometimes “
-James Robinson
😂😂😂
Interesting experiment.
So when will you do another hour of sanding and see if you can add another 5 yards or even more? You definitely need to do a followup and keep thinning it until advantage stops or you cave the face
Is that an old school grafalloy blue shaft in that driver? 😍
Now I have to check competitors club heads, lol.
My understanding is the whole purpose of the injection of material behind the clubface is to allow the club to work with a minimal thickness of the face and to get the club to conform to USGA/R&A rules. In short, the injected material is actually to reduce the bounce of the clubface, not to increase it - AND to keep the clubface from caving in from impact. So - it would seem grinding the clubface down might increase the COR but make the face prone to failure as in cracking. Next up - smear petroleum jelly on the clubface to eliminate spin - which is also illegal and likely makes a mess. I assume there is some regulation against finishing the clubface with teflon to reduce friction or the manufacturers would be doing that as well.
Sorry 😐 if I hit a nerve! I really like your channel, love ❤️ your enthusiasm! Just miss your on course Vlogs and hated seeing a driver better than mine destroyed.
Great video James. What happened to the G80 launch monitor. Are you not using it anymore??
Yes mate I was gonna do a comparison actually but Rick did it yesterday so seems a little pointless 😂
James Robinson Golf Ok. Just keep making awesome videos.
What brand of net is that?
Not a metalworkers... Okay...That explains a lot about your irons and your metal-woods, mate?!👍 Hickory-clubs might be the right step for you, Then?! 😉
Regarding this test: I do want you to take it down more and more until it cracks. (Just to see if you can find an ideal thickness.) By the way - There is instrument who can give you the precise number 👍
Hey James on the whole safety thing if the tool or work piece rotates don’t wear gloves. If the glove gets caught it could take your finger or hand off.
You should put a hard covered ball in water and make the outer shell soft and then compare it to a tp5 pix
Use a vice bro, and also make sure to polish the face if you're doing this yourself. i've cerakoted a driver before and sand blasted the face. It spins like a wedge if you don't polish it off after. Sanding grooves will kill your distance.
Fun vid. 👍👍
Thanks mate. Hope your well
James Robinson Golf check your Instagram messages when you get a min mate. 👍👍
Interesting test!! There is a company in the USA that does this professionally. Yes It’s illegal. But only in competitions! A majority of Golfers don’t play many competitions. At my club, we have about 650 members of which only about 120 members play in the weekend Stableford and the monthly medals.
I think that the R&A,The PGA and The USPGA should relax their draconian rules on amateur golfers. I’m surprised that we’re still not playing with mashies and niblicks in the bag!! Lol.
Every other sport moves forward with technology, so why doesn’t golf!!! After all, have you met any living person who has told you that golf is easy? I most definitely haven’t!
CRASSSHHH GOES THE NEIGHBORS WINDOW
My thought is that you probably brought the face up to SIM driver face thickness. You made a SIM, James!
On missing the net, check your buddy Liam, golfmates, video...I dont think I have ever laughed so hard. I used a grinder and went around the perimeter of the face and polished it, went out and hit it on the course, wow....until I noticed a small hairline crack across the top of the face, oh well. Great content and keep it up, it's fun.
Nice gloves
My anxiety levels have increased when I saw the little net and the houses behind it
Why you did this, please keep your time to do good reviews as usual. Perhaps you can do some basics lessons...we have time to practice at this moment.
I'm kind of on the fence with the result (haven't wathced the outcome yet). In theory it should increase the ball speed some, but there's also the risk that the face becomes too thin and you'll just create a dent on the face on your first hit.
How about a 47-48 inch driver...I used a 42 gram bassara shaft with a 36 gram grip, used a TM M1 with the weights removed, which put the head at 175 grams with the adapter weighs 260 grams total weight. It's a blast to hit, just don't try to swing it in a 25 mph wind. I have a slow clubhead speed, so I dont think I am maxing it out. Give it a try...
Like ir
Pointless but enjoyable at least it’s something new to watch so fair play .. also a lower grade of sandpaper would speed up the process 👍
😂😂😂 hard to disagree
how do we find out about the give away winners?
I'd be curious to see if you actually just sanded off a degree or so of loft - to shave it down to increase COR really takes quite a bit and it will for sure make it break faster.
Not gonna lie I’m kind of surprised Randy from FriedEggsGolf hasn’t done this already. He do did put Vaseline on driver once . 😜😂
The banned Callaway ERC was about 15-20 yards longer. Yours may still be legal.
I would love to see you go further. Step by step until it caves in.
I have the same net in my garden. It’s a weak net. Word of caution is that I drove a ball through it after an hour of hitting into it. Lucky for me it’s only fields the far side. You will put one into your neighbours bedroom.
Madman 😂
