Legit one of the greatest RPGs of all time. I replayed it as an adult. And they did such an amazing job with the combat and story telling. And lots of hidden stuff and one of the greatest mini games ever.
I was 6 when this game came out. One of my favorite memories was figuring out the password to the Sunken Ship with my Dad. We had a piece of paper and wrote down all the clues and worked really hard to figure it out! It’s such a fun memory for me!
I trust that you'll ido just that. But you'll also show your kid the snes. Have a bond over link to the past, DKC, Mario World. Pending on the age of your kid, try having your kid read the words on the screen. Help your kid when they don't know how to say the word. Trust me, it's a great way to teach a young child how to read and write I taught my daughter when she was 3 with Windwaker. She still enjoys that game 10 years later and she remembers the fact it helped her to read and spell
The timing attacks, specials, and defense was the most impressive and fun thing about this game as it forced you to pay attention and be active to do max dmg and healing/defense. It was also implemented into the game, the plot, and the side/secrete quests too. Its impressive as hell and the only games to do that have been paper mario games that i know of.
Great cover of the game, any thoughts I had of selling this game disappeared after hearing the music and seeing the story again. I don’t think I can ever sell it, one of my favorite RPGS
You may have already considered this, but it would be awesome if you covered the storiees of some of the Paper Mario games, specifically the first 3. They have stories just as good as Super Mario RPG
Loved the video. Nostalgia galore. First time I ever played an RPG and was the highlight of my summer before sixth grade and the swan song for the SNES. N64 and Mario 64 came out the following fall. I think being around then and seeing how things progressed in gaming is a privilege. Even though now I think there is oversaturation and too many "homages" to classics but I will still play Metroidvanias like Axiom Verge, Orri, and Hollow Knight.
Just want you to know that I’ve transcribed this video and have added edits for the boss battles and now use it as a bedtime story for my daughter. Thank you for that. And I always credit you btw. Great video.
Beautiful, always loving your explanation with details of games, quick and punctual! Been waiting for a long video to be released by you. Always loved this game when I was young. It was unique in so many ways that brought me into the RPG genre.
We all may not see eye to eye on everything, but we can all agree the forest maze theme SLAPS. This is one of those games that hooked me into RPGs and video gaming in general. Well done.
I've been playing this game since my grandma took me to rent it from Hollywood Video and that question only occurred to me while I was watching your video lol.
Great game. Thank you for this. Time to go fire it up and give my kids an appreciation for one of my favorite games. As for memorable, the axem rangers really stick stand out. I thought it was a cool pop culture reference to the Power Rangers which was huge in the US at the time.
I fucking love this game. So many memories, so many perfect nuances... The best fun fact is that Luigi just slept though everything (as I would). I love the fact that Culex is a boss in the game, as as reference to Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise. I wish SE and Nintendo can work together again. Paper Mario wasn't enough of a "successor" for this game.
Man this game was such an amazing and refreshing game. Everybody I knew instantly got addicted to this game the moment they played it. Man I wished every day they’d make. SMRPG II 😭 come on square/Nintendo this is literally a gold mine waiting to happen!!!
@@LockeNarshe It is quite unfortunate, but I have to believe you based upon Square Enix's recent track-record; as proof of my claim: Square Enix couldn't even pull off the production of Kingdom Hearts 3 properly, even after 14 years of development time. By that logic, it is almost guaranteed that they would ruin "Super Mario RPG 2" by their similiarly expected lack effort/creativity~
@@rossdavis428 Square-Enix's only success in my eyes is the way Yoshi P. and his team turned around FFXIV. It would be unreasonable not to give credit where it's due on that note, but given the rest of its failings outside of XIV's rebirth, I wouldn't trust SE as far as I could throw them.
@@rossdavis428 I mean they even fucked up just cause 4 and I love the just cause series but it's not that complex to keep it with the same mechanics just maybe a bit of refining controls
Here is a Fun Fact: @21:04 Birdo is actually a guy who believes that he is a girl and thus dresses and acts like one; this truth was revealed in the Super Mario Bros. 2 instruction manual~
I love your analyses on everything and picking up the details. But you don't need to ALWAYS tell people that the best part of EVERY game was the underlying story. It's not really always the case. The Gameplay, graphics, and accessibility were the best factors of this game. The story was really just the most simplistic one on purpose. You're the best analysis man on youtube. But it really really isn't always the story that people care about the most.
For sure, and when you think about it, the story of SMRPG is pretty much a "Mario-branded" old-school JRPG story with all of its tropes, guy who is actually a prince? Check; powerful herald coming to guide the heroes? Check; world-ending threat beyond the characters' personal goals? Check. Which makes sense, Squaresoft was tasked to write a JRPG story for a Mario game! Better to play it safe.
I really want to see them do a loose adaptation of this for a sequel to the recently released movie. Cast Ian McShane as Smithy, Keanu Reeves as Geno, and Henry Guillen as Mallow.
@@Xygor That's why I love it. An Evil Wedding Cake, that was so unique. It might be my third favorite boss in the game. With the Axem Rangers being second and Culex being first. I love hearing the FF 4 battle music in that fight. I wished we got Boomer as an playable character.
I have this game and a functioning S.N.E.S. To play it on. The most memorable part is always screwing up the jumps because of the 3D aspect of the game.
Quick correction. Booster's password isn't necessarily 'Mario,' it's whatever you named your file. I about jumped out of my skin the first time because the password was Wendy, and it was so random. If they were going to mention any of the Koopalings, why me, and in this way?! A second later I remembered that I had entered it earlier, and subsequent playthroughs confirmed that it was indeed whatever your save file is named. But, for one brief moment, I almost had a heart attack.
Best rpg on the console, yeah I said it. Beats all the Final Fantasy's, dragon quest, earthbound, chrono trigger, well, maybe it ties with chrono trigger but you get my point homeboy
Not that difficult tbh, A gang called smithy steals from star road, which is where shooting stars are made and where wishes are granted. Their spaceship basically crashes into bowsers keep, just as mario is saving Peach, The entirety of the mario gang gets expelled from the keep, because the universe does not have fall damage, bowser, peach and mario all survive this expulsion. Mario, basically teams up with everyone to defeat the smithy gang and fix star road (and also get back the wish making machine) the end.
One: The name of the cute little guy who (at first) thinks he's a frog is pronounced "MAH-low", as in "Marshmallow". (His look is pretty much self-explanatory) And two: As for the visitor from the Star Road, his real name is difficult to pronounce, so that's why he asks our heroes to refer to him as "Geno".

It’s difficult to choose my favorite part. This was very well done my dude Xygor!
When Jonathan Jones comes up to the surface to help, to this day, chills
Forest Maze. Period.
So many things. But I'll always remember getting to the top of Bowser's Castle and realizing that the sword itself wasn't Smithy.
Tough, either the sunken ship, moleville or nimbus land. All the goofy stuff with mallow and his grandad was fun too.
This is a game that REALLY needs a remaster.
A remaster and a sequel would be absolutely amazing and square and Nintendo would make bank dude
Sequel
Agreed. SquareEnix and Nintendo are getting along better now so maybe they will do something about this game and Chrono Trigger.
Graphically it's obviously dated but close to timeless. Would love to see it on Steam as well. Although, that's a pipe dream....muhahaha
No, the f’ it doesn’t.
I'll always remember the one star in the sky you can find that says something like "I wish I was as brave as my brother Mario"
That one and “I wish I wasn’t such a crybaby” was really sad
I'll never forget how great this game was.
The same year Tupac was gunned down... Hmmm, I wonder if there's a conspiracy-connection here?
This game will forever be a memory I can't ever forget.
Remember the hotel suite that you could build up a bill that you couldn’t pay then you had to work as a bell hop? Lol
And you could take a shower haha

One of my all time favorite games and a gold standard for RPGs. It has so much charm.
Fully agree, this game is well rounded and has every single rpg element packed into it.
The Mario RPG remake is finally here!
Great cover of the game, any thoughts I had of selling this game disappeared after hearing the music and seeing the story again. I don’t think I can ever sell it, one of my favorite RPGS

Toad's Pipe House? I thought the house belonged to Mario!
It does. You can see Mario's spare outfit hanging up on the wall.

This game, ff6, and Breath of Fire II was my entire childhood for SNES
Why was doll Geno's attack able to knock Mario unconscious in one hit before it was possessed?
Good question!

Hopefully lots!
Most memorable? When Booster makes out with Bowser. LOL!!!
