Yes, they can be quite loud! I heard a couple of them about 3am in rural central FL. I'm guessing they were at least 75 yds. away, and their calls were just booming between the open tree canopy. It was very cool.
It's 1:25am. Im in Northwest Ga and just went to the bathroom about 10 mins ago. The window was open and I heard this same exact noise kind of far off in the woods behind my house and everytime one would make that hoot another one would do this freaking crazy sound that I can't describe. It was an almost donald duck but not sound. They only do it at certain times. Freaking amazing animals. I never ACTUALLY see them though. I wish I would though.
I have two large pine trees outside my window and there were two of these guys hooting back and forth for 4 hours, it was peaceful at first, but after a while it got annoying...
i just heard two outside a few minutes ago and they sounded like two monkeys yelling and i was VERY confused cause i live right outside a big city. didn’t even realise they were owls until they made a second noise that sounded normal lmao
My dad saved a Barred Owl once! It had been hit by a car and it was freezing so my dad took it home and let it warm up and after a few days it flew away just fine. If it hadn’t recovered so well we would have done the several hour drive to the raptor sanctuary nearest to us to help it. Happy endings are great. We called him Birb.
When we first moved from the city to a rural property with lots of trees I woke to this sound in the middle of the night. Freaked me out! But I went outside to check and directed my flashlight up to see a beautiful owl staring down at me! Since then I just love hearing them (along with many other wild animals) call to each other in the night 😊

My husband and I walk in the woods a lot in central Georgia. When we go early in the morning (right after dawn), we hear them. Recently, around 7 am, one swooped past us and left a feather. I collect feathers. I feel especially close to the Creator when I find certain feathers. It is very interesting to find out where others have heard them.
I'm pretty sure that banging you hear at the beginning is the clucking of a chipmunk. That particular sound is a warning that a hawk or other bird of prey is nearby (i.e. a warning that that Barred Owl is near).
A barred pwl loves in the trees just outside my window. A lot of people think his song is creepy, but I look forward to it. I find it soothing. Every night he’s singing. It’s seems to be the only constant in a chaotic world. I see him as a friend.
It's funny how owls are nocturnal, incredibly well camouflaged, and literally have wings designed to be silent...yet these guys are DEAFENINGLY loud when they do this call lol
This owl call woke me up while camping at Lake Crescent, Washington. It was so loud! We were at the Fairholme campground and it was calling to another owl farther away. Eventually a dog started barking and then a baby started crying 😂. Amazing sound to be right next to. LOUD!

There used to be a barred owl living in a tree in my dad's backyard. I used to see it sometimes, just chilling on a branch, scouting for prey to catch. There's something about these birds that's just so fascinating and mysterious.

As kids my brother and I always heard an owl hoot somewhere nearby the house. It sounded as though there was just a single vocalist. Melodic -- like a brief, angelic little jingle. Until one day the hoot hooted, and then never hooted again. The thought saddens me a little. But there's always a warm, comfy feeling attached to the hoot-song, and it will echo in my memories until my very last day!
I'm so lucky to have a mated pair behind my place in the woods I hear all of the time... It's a great treat that never tire of... You should hear when they do the "monkey call' !... Look it up on TY, if you have never heard it. I was the chief naturalist for a state parks nature center, and would go on night owl calling hikes with a group of folks to call them in, in a remote natural environment. These Owls are absolutely silent in flight, and many times would land unknown just yards above us in the trees, and start their calls. This would startle the heck out of even the most steely nerved person, in the best possible way. It was so amazing for folks from urban areas to experience this, heck even country folk who had heard them before, but never almost on top of you! Those chipmunks are very wise to call the alarm, as this owl loves small rodents VERY much, so please don't use poison bait to control mice, etc. Great video, thanks for sharing.

To me at first I thought it was a horse with metal horseshoes walking on a road or hard surface. But it didn't sound like it got any closer or further away.

I actually saw 4 Baby Barred Owls. All loned up next to each other, and the mother was catching the food and giving it to them. And also, Barred Owls are day and night hunters
2 am, middle of the woods in Harpers Ferry WV. I was doing a 3 day fast as part of some school project/spiritual experience with 9 of my friends. I was woken up the the loudest thing I’d ever heard and it scared the living shit out of me. My hammock was under the tree the owl was sitting on. I laid there for 2 hours as the Owl called to another far away in the woods up by the Appalachian trail. Getting a tattoo of an owl in my arm
@@Rep0007 that would have been a cliche ending to a movie but no, the reality is a lot more mundane 4th morning I walked back to camp, ate some blueberry muffins and an orange, hit my juul a bit and then went to a nearby town to get a shower and a shave and ate at a hibachi restaurant with my friends who did the fast with me to celebrate making it through the 3 days. Endings usually aren’t as crazy or scary as the movies tbh. Ending of my experience is pretty mundane. I just, discussed my experience and went home.
It's great to see what they look like when they make their familiar calls. This only a sample of their repertoire. Other times they sound like their laughing at some joke together. In the summer where I live, they sing me to sleep almost every night. Thanks for this.
This sound is very nostalgic for me. I still have this CD of scary halloween sounds/music that my parents bought many years ago. This call is all throughout it and I never knew what it was until my college zoology classes.
We have a lot of these guys around our house in the North Georgia mountains. It is funny when the crows find out they are there. Hollering and screaming and dive bombing the owl.

It's great to see what they look like when they make their familiar calls. This only a sample of their repertoire. Other times they sound like their laughing at some joke together. In the summer where I live, they sing me to sleep almost every night. Thanks for this.

I still have this CD of scary halloween sounds/music that my parents bought many years ago. This call is all throughout it and I never knew what it was until my college zoology classes.

We have a lot of these guys around our house in the North Georgia mountains. It is funny when the crows find out they are there. Hollering and screaming and dive bombing the owl.

I have some great horned owls living near me that I hear some mornings. As far as I know they are the only owls that make the pure "who" sound.
