- The Garuda hybrid livery was too special to be excluded from this :P
Eyo and welcome to my Fleet Histories series where we take a look at the operational history of aircraft fleets both active and retired. Passenger airliners are normally featured, although freighter and government aircraft will be covered occasionally. This series was inspired by the videos of elmauriplatense, Ibirdball, Scaring Crab, and many other aviation RUclipsrs.
Despite being a loyal Douglas customer in the 1950s and 1960s, KLM ordered the Boeing 747 for increased range on intercontinental routes. The first aircraft, named "Mississippi," was delivered to the airline on January 16, 1971. It marked a milestone in KLM's history as their first ever Boeing aircraft. The 747-200s replaced the older DC-8s on many of the airline's transatlantic and Far East services throughout the 1970s. Some aircraft were later converted to have stretched upper decks from 1984 to 1986 to increase passenger capacity. KLM gained notoriety when one of their 747-200s collided with a Pan Am 747 during take-off from Los Rodeos airport in 1977, resulting in the loss of 583 lives. The last aircraft were retired in 2004 and replaced with the newer 747-400s.

These were the golden years of flying. The Boeing 747 being at any major airport around the world, a common feature.
0:48 RIP
Very unfortunate aircraft indeed...
The registration PH-BUF was the aircraft involved in the tenerife airport disaster

I loved the 747 SUD version it looks so nice to my eyes. To bad they aren’t no longer flying.
Same. They're quite special.

B747-100??
No they're early 747-200s.
Retro_Avi8or yeah, the early 200 series used to have only 6 Windows (3 on each side) but now they have like 20 (10 on each side) and could also have an optional upper deck door.

idk why KLM named their aircraft after a city
PH-BUA was actually named after the river. The first batch of aircraft were named after rivers, and the SUD aircraft were named after famous aviators.
PH-BUA was that the plane names the Rhine? If so, then that is one of the aircrafts involved in the worst air disaster ever. R.I.P to those souls lost in that crash.
@@ethanbai9639 No PH-BUA was named Mississippi. The Rhine was actually registered PH-BUF.
Also, I was wondering if PH-BUN was a 747-200 or a 747-200SUD.
@@ethanbai9639 Yup. PH-BUN is an SUD.
The last few parts was a 747 300.
No they're 747-200s with the SUD conversion.
@@RetroAvi8or ohhh! I never knew they did that. Thanks for telling me :>
@@benzjiman6931 Np! KLM actually operated a trio of 747-300s, and they were so satisfied with their capacity that they converted most of the -200s with the -300's upper deck.
@@RetroAvi8or that’s dope! There’s one in the Lelystad museum!
@@RetroAvi8or they look the same lol
747-300???
Those are 747-200s that had the SUD conversion.
BOEING 747-200 BEST
Gotta love that short upper deck.
I prefer -100
I personally like the -100 and -200 just the same.
