Japan Airlines Boeing 747 Classic Fleet History (1970-2009)

- Japan's economic miracle in the 80s really helped JAL become the 747's biggest operator of all time
こんにちは! Fleet Histories is a series where we take a look at the operational history of aircraft fleets both active and retired. Passenger airliners are normally featured, although freighter and government aircraft will be covered occasionally. This series was inspired by the videos of elmauriplatense, Ibirdball, Scaring Crab, and many other aviation RUclipsrs.
Japan Airlines (JAL) was the first Asian airline to operate the Boeing 747. They put their initial order while the 747 was still in development in 1966 and received their first aircraft in 1970. The first transpacific service with these aircraft was flown on July 1, 1970 from Tokyo Haneda to San Francisco. JAL also introduced a special 747 variant, the SR, on domestic routes in 1973. The 747 Classics were the primary aircraft on JAL's intercontinental routes in the 1970s and 1980s, but they were later relegated to medium-haul flights with the introduction of the 747-400 variant in 1990. A total of 70 aircraft served with the airline until the last one was retired in 2009, making JAL the largest operator of the 747 Classic of all time.

JA8117 went on to be one of the two shuttle carrier aircraft for nasa. She’s now preserved in Arizona as N911NA.
JA8117 was also the prototype 747SR, but Boeing painted JA8114 (a -200B) in the "Super Airbus" house livery to promote the SR.
It’s actually in Palmdale CA.
I thought it was in Houston, Texas, I literally saw it in the Houston Space Center, it was carrying the Independence shuttle, right?
やっぱりジャンボ最高。復活してくんねぇかなー...

懐かしいです。
No song fits this video better than Plastic Love! Nice one 👍
JA812J now belongs to Orient Thai Airlines, but was seen missing engines #2 and #3 waiting for the scrap man in 2016. It is probably scrapped or stored now.
and now orient thai was end on 2018 lol

Goodbye classic 747 Japan Airlines Rip 😔. in Rest of Peace 🕊. I will see you In Future.
JAL is truly a legend.
1987 and 1994 are old Nagoya RJNN, famous for CI140.
I got the 1987 pic because it had my favorite JAL 747, JA8104, in it. As for the 1994 pic, it was actually taken at RPLL.

@@RetroAvi8orWhat's The Title Of this video or song or music is called that Playing in This Video?????
Strange how JA8170 is a -100 when it looks more like a -300
Agree, but I like the SUD conversion they did on it.

Rip flight 123
Dang they operated the classic till 2009.
But the -400 till 2011, which is unfair for me.
Mahan and Iran
2016 and present
Ikr, but you have to keep in mind that JAL was suffering financial problems from 2009-2011 and needed to retire older aircraft to reduce costs.
@@RetroAvi8or we dont forget the fact that Japan was affected by the tsunami & the fukushima nuclear incident which also affected JAL's financial situation & the posterioursly ditch of the jumbo fleet.
@@axl1632 Actually the tsunami happened just shortly after the 747-400 was retired. The plane left the fleet of JAL in March 2, 2011 and the tsunami in March 11, 2011.
JAL was almost bankrupt in 2011 so they decided to remove the 747 in their fleet
Remembering the flight 123
Awsome remake
Thanks!
Looking at some people here makes the mention of JAL 123 my pet peeve.
29年在籍した、JA8104が好き。
初めてJΛL.塗装になったのが貨物型のJA8123だった記憶があります。
jal’s b747-200’s are a frequent site in Manila during the days
1972: first flight to Mexico City (defunct in 2010), 1983 first flight in Chicago, 1986 first flight to Atlanta (defunct in 2010), 2001: Mid Air incident between 1 B747 and 1 DC-10 planes, Fortunately, collision was avoided, there were no impact or fatalities and everyone lived to tell the tale.
I know that the 747 is now unpopular but why did Japan airlines stop their 747s in 2011?
They got bankrupt and couldn't keep them any longer.
Thanks
@@alotofjobs4276 Yes, but fortunately, the Russian airline company Transaero, and then ROSSIA saved 747, 200, 300, 400. Now in There were 9 passenger 747-400s, not counting freight. Transaero had to buy 4 Boeing 747 8, but the airline never received 747 8 due to the fact that it went bankrupt in 2016.
P.S. I miss Transaero😢😭.

Guys, don’t you know that one 747-146 (delivered to Kalitta Air as N-703CK) that was used for Harisson Ford’s Air Force One movie, and a 747SR-46 used as one of NASA’s Shuttle Carrier Airplane?
JAL is best airlines in Japan ever since 1953
Did Japan airlines still fly 747-300 or japan airlines retire 747-300
