the 747-400 joined the klm fleet in 1989, 1 year after this commercial was filmed, the 747’s you see here are “classics” (aka 747-200 and 300) the classics left the klm fleet in 2003 when the last remaining KLM classic was sold to a aviation museum
I still enjoy every flight in my life, but the first one was with an KLM 747 in 1991. I sat with my parents in the front of the business class and shortly after take off, the stewardess came to me and asked if i want to take a look into the cockpit. At this moment the plane was still ascending and i saw the clouds coming closer every second, we went upstairs through first class and right at the moment we entered the flight deck, we passed through the clouds and i saw them from above. The first officer told me some things about the plane and gave me a small metall model of the 747 that i still have in my collection. Untill today i remember this experience every time i am onboard a plane, and miss these good old times, but feel priveleged, that i can keep this experience in my childhood memories.

@@wesleynash9385 Yeah sadly, i wished many other children could make this unforgetable experience nowadays. But i think this was changed by 9/11. Sad, but this is the life we now have to live. Actually, they did. KLM is one of only a few airlines that ordered the Boeing 747 'SUD' conversion (SUD = Stretched Upper Deck). Boeing converted 10 of KLM's 747-200s into the 747-200SUD, which looks identical to the 747-300.
Incredible actually how far they came in a relatively short period as only 40 years earlier the first transatlantic passenger flight was done by klm in a DC4.
If you look closely you will see that the 747-200B in this clip was named in honor of Charles Kingsford Smith, who flew the first long-distance trans-Pacific flight between the United States and Australia. He and his crew made the flight in the three-engine Fokker F.VIIb/3m named "Southern Cross."
Anyone recall their campaign from the 70s, "Come, have an Amsterdam good time" ? I recall seeing those spots on TV as a child back then, the theme music was very catchy.
Today the lineage of the "Queen of the Skies" is carried on in the "crown princesses" of Boeing's "royal family" of wide-body jets - the "Triple Seven" (777-300ER) and 787 Dreamliner - both of which are in KLM's fleet.
It's not the Virus who killed the 747, it's the Progress, big quadjets like the 747 and A380 are an relic from other times. Most airlines planned the retirement of the Quadjets in the next few years, they aren't profitable anymore, the whole industry, both planes and the way they are operated changed a lot in the last 30 years, I think Corona was an Blessing for these operators, they were able to kick the most Unprofitable planes fast out of the fleet.
