The Waltons - The Volunteer. GW Haines (David Doremus) enlists in the Army after Erin (Mary McDonough) refuses his marriage proposal. Once Mary Ellen's (Judy Norton) boyfriend, Erin feels guilty that she has now driven GW to enlist. Grandpa (Will Geer) and Jim Bob (David Harper) try to solve peacock Rover's love life as well. Maude Gormley (Merie Earle) hires Ike to be her agent to sell her paintings.

Maude, GW and Rover the peacock all in one episode! WHOA! I have the feeling that when GW was with Erin at the boardinghouse and attempted to kiss her goodnight in her room, he may have been testing the waters to see if she MIGHT be ready to be more than friends. However, to his credit, he accepted her refusal to go any further and, moreover, even defended her rep with that boorish fellow recruit!
Ironically how Grandpa tried to help both Erin and Rover the peacock edge towards romance but neither were ready. Thankfully, both Erin and Rover had friends of the opposite gender who respected them so that was nothing to be sneezed at. Yeah, I definitely think that since Erin wound up getting cold feet while eloping with Chad, she wasn't yet ready to jump the broom (so to speak) with GW.
    Thanks for this!

In real life, Fort Lee was in Petersburg, VA which is over 100 miles away from Walton's Mountain. Rockfish, on the other hand, is literally a 5-minute car ride away. However, there's no military base or much of anything anymore other than a post office. Most of the community was washed away permanently in 1969 during Camille.

This is one of my favorite episodes as it sets up for me, one of the most memorable. The one where G.W. dies, "The First Casualty". Hi LisaMorris. I agree. The director and producer of both episodes were exceptional. The Casualty broke a lot of hearts and had us crying a lot of tears. A Beautiful panoramic landscape of GW's home on the farm with his proud parents, so delighted to have their son home for a day, only to be faced with his sudden death soon after. I felt such sorrow for them, imagining if that was my son. I can't wait to see Judy's interview with David Doremus. Excellent performances once again. 🤩👍

Another memorable episode for me...that darn Peacock! He was trained and well behaved but Oh, was he LOUD! The one thing he couldn't be trained was to be quiet when we were rolling...and he found the 'bell' (actually an ugly sounding loud HORN we used when outside) fascinating i.e. every time we were ready to roll and sounded the 'bell' that silly Peacock would let out a scream and we'd have to wait (usually a few seconds) for him to calm down! At one time I had gone to the outdoor set of "Police Woman" and asked the AD to coordinate with us as the loud blanks they used in their guns had caused us to stop a few times...now, the "Police Woman" AD came to me and asked if we could muffle the Peacock (we couldn't, ha!) About the use of Stunt People I recall in "The Ferris Wheel" where Kami gets stuck near the top and Eric rescues her by climbing skeleton of the ride to do just that - Eric really wanted to do the work himself, and director Larry Dobkin obliged as much as possible...if memory serves me there was a shot where Eric is handed a rope and begins the climb...then we cut and had a Stunt Person double for Eric do the climb for the long-shot...then we cut to Eric climbing off the rails and into the Ferris Wheel car and comfort Kami. We had built a duplicate portion of the Ferris Wheel on Stage 26 (recall Kami falling off in her dream) I'm pretty sure this portion of the wheel on Stage 26 wa the one we used for Eric's rescue of Kami - a bit fuzzy memory there but I'm sure Eric would know - anyway Erics Mom was there for the climb, and Kami's folks were there for the fall!
I also recall those paintings of Maude's in Ike's Store, each uniquely painted 'primitives' painted by Art Director Ed Graves. Fun Fact: While filming this episode Merie Earle (Maude Gormley) made one of her appearances on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" FYI, watching the episode I found myself filling in as an Extra climbing into the bus, dancing etc. what FUN!
David Doremus was a doll, such a nice young man.

John Dayton! howdy! Always exciting to read your descriptive posts! Should you ever decide to compile your many detailed experiences working in the film/TV industry, it would be a best seller! Angie Dickinson from Police Woman, was admired by many young girls/women. I was one of those little girls. So we gotta forgive the loud blanks they had used on set! Wow, Eric did much of the stunt work on the Ferris Wheel! And Ed Graves's paintings were beautiful! Last note, Be great if you could give us the name of the Waltons episodes where you were climbing into the bus, dancing, etc... We recall you playing majestically like Chopin in one episode. 👍

Hi Judy, thank you so much for your videos, I always look forward to them! I have a question: With The Waltons arguably being one of the best known shows in the world and the forerunner of what today would be considered well known memes ("Good night, John Boy"...), how did you manage to stay grounded? Most young actors become self-important and arrogant, many start taking drugs and are never seen again, but you come across as so 'normal', well mannered and humble. Yet, you must have been aware that many teenagers had your poster on their walls and just as many saw feisty Mary Ellen as a role-model for women. What contributed to you staying so grounded, religion, family or something else? Many thanks and lots of love from West Sussex, UK!

I've always loved the character of G.W. He's so down-to-earth and very sweet--one guy that any nice girl would be happy to bring home to meet her family! And the way Erin reacted to that couple slipping away to be alone and the fact that Erin didn't want to stay at the same place as that other gal reminds me of just the way my folks raised all of us. I doubt my folks would have allowed me a weekend like that unless we were double-dating with one of my brothers and his gal. I understood John's initial response--I would have expected no less from him. Regardless, it was all handled very tastefully as we can so happily expect from The Walton's. So excited to have David Doremus join you for an interview, Judy! It is always interesting to see the actors out of character.

@@judynorton2598 A young woman (in this instance Erin) should be able to travel freely w/o fear of harm. The reality is that there are wolves out there, particularly in places like the military. When I did my apprenticeship I was horified at what I saw and the attitudes of the young men. So yes I do agree that John did the right thing and being accurate for social norms at the time. I just chuckle every time John has an outburst. Like that incidentant on the Caretakers with Easy Jackson. Or when he criticises Olivia for her attitude, when the Baldwin sisters want to adopt Jason, then throws his coveralls onto the floor. Ralph was such a brilliant actor, he made a real art out of it. I'm just wondering whether the real model for Erin, Audrey, was barred from going to an Army camp, or perhaps another family member. I'd love to know where Earl go some of his ideas.

I recollect whenever G. W. eventually gets killed in WW2 that I was watching with my parents. Dad's younger sister had gotten married just before the young husband went off to fight. He probably went to Camp Lee, Virginia. Bill would become the first person from our home county to die in WW2, in the North Africancampaign. Anyway, my dad would tell me, a baby boomer born in 61 - towards the end of that generation, that story. I watched the series with parents the age of John Boy and Mary Ellen. Many times, it would prompt the disclosure of events in their own lives...

    • @judynorton2598

If you took a bite in a take that was printed, then any subsequent camera angle you were in had to match. So you had to eat bites on the same lines of dialogue each time. After scenes were done, the food that was “used” I believe was tossed.
