I have no issues with Zhou getting a seat. Although I'm extremely pissed about Zhou getting a seat over Piastri who's doing a Russel/Leclerc with his consiquetive F3 and F2 championships.
alpine probably didn’t wanna let him go, that’s why they released Zhou from his contract
no way Ferrari would allow piastri (who’s driving a different engine) to learn the ins and out of Ferrari engine with the stake so high
I'm so exited about GuanYu, but I agree with you Piastri is so talented. But systemic issue is, this is not a sport that select the best talent. Best talent for sure, but not the best
Looking at tsunoda i hope piastri loses the championship so he can get the experience. Sure he may not go to the pressure washer that is readbull/alphatauri but still
I kinda think too they tried Piastri first, but the situation didn't allow it, so they went for Zhou who isn't a bad driver at all, in my opinion he might do kinda well in F1 if things go right, and also has the money

@@_SpamMe To be fair, it isn't hard to find cynical folks re Mick and 2018. To be equally fair, he has done more than well enough since that any quirky circumstances in one season hardly matter now. Its not as if Dan has proven himself to be an unavoidable talent, either.
Nah it's pretty common knowledge that engine selection is political in F2 and F3, and especially at Prema.
Guanyu Zhou is the only person in history to move to Sheffield to follow his dream!
Tsk tsk. Not even the only Chinese doing so. See Ding Junhui.

I’ll do you one better. Why is Guanyu Zhou?
If Alonso is set to retire in a couple years time, Alpine will be wanting to keep Piastri to fill the seat in the future. I doubt he’ll just sit around doing nothing until then but his time in f1 will come.
Fernando will switch to Indy soon enough , if he did 2 years ago, he probably would be champion this year because McLaren SP team is absolutely great.
where is he gonna go before getting picked up in f1 though? if he wins f2 this year then he can't stay in f2. He needs to keep racing somehow

And there is no way alpine is releasing piastri.
Unless you sneak your way out like Sainz did with Red Bull or get the boot like Zhou and Ferrari. But yeah, Piastri had much less chances of reaching F1 right away than someone like Yuki Tsunoda did, mainly because Alpine doesn't have a client F1 team.
Also no one seems to realize that the 2nd Alfa seat is just a placeholder for when Pourchaire is ready, Alfa putting in Piastri for a year would be a waste, when they can just get a bag of money instead while their own prodigy gets ready for the jump
I'm going to miss Italian Jesus. He was definitely improving, but i guess not fast enough
i get the whole "new formula will be a great equaliser" but zhou is likely to face a very uphill battle. Bottas is a great driver, and alfa's strategy and overall performance these last 5 years has been pretty dogshit.

The online kerfuffle basically boils down to this:
Does Guanyu Zhou deserve a F1 seat in a vacuum purely based on talent? I think most people would say yes. He's looked really good on many occasions.
Does he deserve it over Giovinazzi? I think still a lot of people would agree. As much as I like Gio he's nothing special and hasn't really improved that much with plenty of time.
But does he also deserve it over the likes of Piastri, Ilott, De Vries, Schwartzman and other similar young drivers that can't get a seat? I don't think many people would say yes to this.
Saber ruined Gio's races with bad strategies
He is not that talented, Piastri really deserves it, he is an F2 rookie and has won the championship. Also Nyck is Formula E WDC, Shwartzman was leading F2 for half the year and Ilott did the absolute same (even same team) but has more experience with Alfa Romeo. Giovinazzi wasnt that bad. I think its not deserved, but I shouldnt talk because there is Mazespin in F1 and they didnt take Lord Mahaveer.
And also: WHO CARES?
Gio is only really good at quali. His race pace is horrible
you know who lost to mazepin in f2 last year while mazepin's teammate was 10th he was driving the same car as Illot(2nd)?
yup. you guessed it

@Yoda he's doing pretty well considering this is his rookie season; plus the gap between him and Bottas is not too big, with Bottas being a very experienced driver and Zhou being new to F1
7 months later hes doing well.. at least better than most expectations. Im on the bandwagon for sure
That AR car is just hot garbage at the moment. They seem to be going backwards rather than forward. Especially impressed how he is able to have a back-and-forth with Bottas in quali
@@casperguo7177 Yh much like Haas it's underdeveloped but the main thing hindering the car is its shitty, Mechachrome-esque reliability. And it's probably fair to say that none of Zhou's DNF's so far have been his fault at all due to just that.

A lot of people don't seem to understand that Alpine wasn't going to drop Piastri from their academy so he can drive for AR and AR wasn't going to take Piastri for a year and endure the growing pains of the rookie driver so Alpine could snag him back in 2023. I've been making that Zhou/Latifi comparison as well so I wouldn't say he doesn't belong. He had a decent FP1 session this year. As for Piastri, Alpine would be completely foolish if they don't give him a seat in 2023. The problem (a good problem) is that I think Piastri overshot his expected growth curb and caught Alpine off guard. I feel like they were aiming for Piastri to be in F2 for 2 years and didn't really expect him to win it as a rookie.
Got a point today, so happy for him he’s such a nice guy , breath of fresh air. Go Alfa Romeo!
9:50 if you give every half-decent driver a couple of years to prove themselves soon enough you need 100 cars on the F1 grid.
While there are flaws in Zhou’s ability, he’s stepping in to a team with a perfect team mate to help him grow and develop, unlike Latifi and the Haas boys

Zhou actually seems like a good driver and its debatable if he deserves a seat in F1 or not, also its awesome that China can have a driver.
I think people arent even pissed because of Gio getting the boot, he had his shot and it wasn't like he beat Kimi fair and square.
People are mad because Piastri is going to win F2 and he's not getting a shot.
The thing is f1 is about making money, Zhou does while the other doesnt
What's not awesome is that the red goons get bragging rights...no offense to Zhou here.
Sauber (or Alfa) have their own talent - Theo Pourchaire. And I bet that they will bring him into F1 for 2023, currently, it is too early for F1, Pourchaire can do another year in F2 without any problems. And if they have a seat to fill, why should they get Piastri? They would develop a driver for a different program. So they went for Zhou, who at least brings money. So basically, grabbing some money until Pourchaire can get the seat.
When it comes to Piastri or Alpine in general - the Renault Sports Academy was always a dead end... It is probably the worst academy when it comes to chances in F1.
Yep. Renault is the only work team with no sister team. If you want to drive the Renault you need to take either the French driver's seat or Alonso's seat. Neither seems particularly possible.
@@rexsong4835 Exactly. And so far, Renault/Alpine only went for established drivers. Personally, I think Alpine should look at Williams to strike deal with them for Renault-Engines (Williams-Renault has some history, after all, and the Renault-Engine is not that bad) so that they have at least one spot for one of their drivers in F1 outside of Alpine.
@@AvenFallen well that’s not happening because Williams have close ties with Mercedes. They’d have a better chance with Haas as Ferrari already have Sauber and Haas might need a financial boost
@@littleboy1273 I would say this is even more unlikely, because the complete existence of Haas is based on their close ties with Ferrari. They get as much as possible from Ferrari and they even got a new facility next to them and some staff (likely because of the Budget Cap). I always knew about Zhou in F2 since he joined but it was near the end of 2020 where I started to support him, while he isn't a Piastri or Russell, he's more of a Latifi than a Mazepin when seeing him as a pay driver. I'm staying with the same opinion as Latifi, I will not judge him until half of his first season is up, which was Latifi's whole season. Because while Zhou won't win championships, he might be a good reliable driver with a stable backing.
He is one of my favourite drivers on the grid. Plagued by streaks of bad luck in an inferior car. But he's a great personality and I think his racecraft is well underrated. I hope Alfa keep him until 2026 (and that's me assuming Audi will bring in a major upgrade to make the car competitive) so he can show his talent.
On the F2 front, I'd also like to see Jehan Daruvala move up to F1, but that's just a personal thing. I think Chinese and Indian drivrs would add more to F1 than bringing in more US drivers just for the sake of bringing in US drivers.

At the end of the day Alfa Romeo needed the cash and Zhou can bring both that and some decent enough racecraft. Even considering he is worse than Piastri that was never an option cuz Piastri can't pay the bills.
True. Plus Alpine has shown that they really don’t want to loose Oscar so there’s a good chance that after space opens up, piastri will get the seat. He’ll definitely get at least one FP run under the new rules with alpine in 2022
Piastri and Ilott would be a good lineup at Haas presuming Schumacher makes the jump up to somewhere else.
@@Xiphactinus I don't see Mickster going to another team but Ferrari. But the way Carlos has been driving, I don't see it happening anytime soon. Charles is glued to this seat to 2024 but to me, Carlos has been the secret weapon for Ferrari this past season. So 2020 Mickster stays in Haas. It really depends how 2022 will turn out. Alfa seats are booked with Bottas and probably Theo coming in 2023/4. The possibility of Hamilton and Alonso leaving after 2022 is not to be dismissed so it will be a domino effect. Reaching Formula 1 has never been based on merit alone (save a few exceptions). As much as we like to romanticize the idea of underdogs with no financial backing to reach the pinnacle of motor racing, we have to admit that a big part of being a formula 1 driver is also having the ingenuity to get sponsors and investors. It's always been an elitist sport and always will be, people shouldn't be surprised that another pay driver joined the grid.
Of all the kinds of pay drivers, Zhou seems to be at least a competent driver. Let's wait and see how he fares in 2022 against Bottas.

Maybe a silly question but, I know that drivers always need to accrue a certain amount of points to gain their super license, but do they need to do anything to keep it? Like people at the back of the grid wouldn't be earning points, due to the cars being wank etc. But if they're crashing or spinning out, or even getting in the way of the front runners in races/quali, what ensures that they keep their license?
In order to keep their superlicense, they need to keep racing. This came up in 2020 when drivers were getting covid and weren't able to race. Hulkenburg was chosen over some others because he had raced recently. Esteban Gutierrez was the first pick, but since he had just been a reserve/development driver for the past 3 years. He lost his superlicense and wasn't eligible
