- Chattanooga, Tennessee is no Atlanta, but it still provides a ton of railroad action littered with a diverse number of shooting locations on both CSX and Norfolk Southern. Home to NS's DeButts Yard, the majority of the traffic in and out of town are manifests. However, due to the convergence of 5 different NS lines, a wide variety of trains and motive power can be seen.
We spend most of the morning of October 1, 2018 around DeButts Yard catching inbound and outbound trains, along with yard movements and several CSX freights passing Coffey's Cliff. Later in the day we moved around town with the intention of heading further west. However, word of a southbound parade on the CNO&TP caught our attention, and with action dying down some in town, opted to head north to end the day.
This video covers a wide range of mainlines and various yard activity, contains some diverse motive power, and captures what a railfan can experience on any given day in and around the Chattanooga area.

5:52 shave and a hair cut
My son and I have spent many fun hours at this location by DeButts Yard with our friend Richard T. It has been more than ten years since we were last year and the cliff area has surely grown over. BTW....;.never knew that place had a name, Coffeys Cliff. From Hatboro, Pa. you all have a GREAT day!!
I'm a Washington expatriate who recently moved to the Chattanooga area. Any good public spots nearby to railfan?
Nice shave and haircut at 5:49!
Southeast Rail, what’s the reason why 50N ran long hood forwards?
I believe one of the other units experienced mechanical problems further up the line.
Great video my friend!!!!! I'm Peter from Forsyth Ga. Have not had a chance to do any rail fanning in TN yet hope to get up there soon😉😉 Thanks for sharing 😎😎😎
Thanks Peter! It's definitely worth the trip. Such a wide variety of locations and different rail lines all feeding into the same area, pretty cool!
It would be greatly appreciated if you would also include the model numbers of the locomotives in your descriptions Thanks
Nice video. We live in N. Georgia. What driving route up there is easiest to get to the action?
Thank you! I-75 takes you right to Chattanooga, and taking I-24 can get you to a variety of spots in and west of town.
Wonder if that CSX Louisville to Cayce, SC went via Nashville or Knoxville?...🤔
He runs Nashville - Chatt - Atlanta then north bound up the Abbeville Sub to SC
That's what I figured. Makes more sense. Thanks!
Good try
Is there a possible way you can give me an address of the place your at in the beginning of the vid
