    The defect detector announced milepost #8. I assume milepost ZERO is the one in downtown Atlanta.....near Underground....where the city actually began. The Vance AL to Brunswick GA autorack train (at 'Bridge') must have been hauling Mercedes Benz's since the MB assembly plant is at Vance, and Brunswick is MB's main US port. Once upon a time automobiles were hauled 'in the open'.....no protective sides or tops on the rack carriers. But rock throwing trackside vandals soon made protective covering on these carriers mandatory. I've watched your video several times and always see (or hear) something I missed before. Great editing. Be safe out there.....Perry Blvd , Hollywood Rd., etc. aren't exactly known to be warm and fuzzy neighborhoods.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 лет назад

      Nice that you discover new things the more often you watch it. I typically also see details only when I edit the videos, but not necessarily while recording the material. I know the area isn't great but I rarely go there. It's not close to where I live anyway.

      Greg H I know this is a rather old comment but my dad worked as a quality control manager for a company that supplied parts for the big 3 auto makers, he made several trips to Detroit to the ford plant, Kansas City, Janesville, WI to name just a few and I remember him telling me when I was a kid in the mid-eighties about how they were going to have to cover all the rail cars because of the damage to the cars. Sorry, you gave me flashbacks to my childhood... thanks!

    I'm amazed at how clean all the NS motive units are. BTW, does anyone know why ostensible competitors would share motive units? Why would BNSF want NS to use one of their units in a consist?

    • @boredtacos19
      @boredtacos19 8 лет назад +7

      It makes it easier for trains to interchange with other railroads, they don't have the hassle of switching engines. Also it makes sense for railroads like BNSF and NS, (this applies to other railroads too, its just an example)
      because while they are both railroads, they aren't competitors; NS is East and BNSF is west. Freight still needs to move across the imaginary borders between railroads, so having efficient interchange of freight is important. Also, railroads tend not to think in the vein of "We shouldn't do this; we might be helping a competitor more than it helps us." Railroads have a lot of competition, not only from other railroads, but from trucking. They know that doing things that have little effect on themselves to harm a competitor will harm the industry, which will harm them in the long run.
      In short, its all in good business to have good relationships.

      @Harold Smith Just saying about SD38-2 #2434 with a cabless unit, it was to complete it's yardwork by building a new mixed freight for pickup. Later that time, some CSX GE's would come into Tilford Yard to couple #2434 and #1066. After building their mixed freight and the crew ties down the slug set and gets off, CSX GE widecabs will enter the yard so that the SD38-2 and the slug can be dead in tow. Welp...I wonder which train that will be to haul the EMD SD38-2 and the (cabless unit) slug to somewhere? We'll see this manifest when it's done. LOL!

    What kind of engine is that behind the lead CSX engine? Just saw it's called a SLUG. What's its purpose?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  3 года назад +1

      It provides extra traction. It doesn't have an own engine, but it does have traction motors on its axles, controlled by the lead locomotive.

      Yeah, unfortunately I saw that only on my screen when I was back home. From the large distance I couldn't see it at Inman. If I would have known it while I was there, I had waited for NS 154 to move out. Thank you! Will do!

    • @Three_Rivers_Rail_Photography
      @Three_Rivers_Rail_Photography 8 лет назад

      Yeah, I don't understand while they have it trailing because they usually don't unless they have no choice. I have only seen two heritage units. 1 was the Interstate and the other was the Nickel Plate Road when NS did the NKP excursion. I recorded on my channel.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад

      I don't think they care much about if it's leading or trailing. I have seen several of those units trailing. Nice, I also saw the Nickel Plate some months ago.

    To bad that these yards don't have towers like the "Golden Spike" for the general public to view the action for our own eye's. Nice video but to be honest I want to take my own video/photos but standing on an overpass in Atlanta Ga is not my idea of fun.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад +1

      +photo2c Well, there's no public access to Inman and Tilford. I take it as it comes. Trespassing is not an option. Most yards are hidden from the public, which is very unfortunate as the railroads could generally contribute to the education of people, in particular children, by showing them how exciting railroads are and how trains are 'made'.

    • @photo2c
      @photo2c 8 лет назад +2

      I agree. But CSX has never been one to care to much about railfans. I live in Jacksonville Florida the headquarters of CSX and there is no Railroad Museum at all.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад +1

      Yep, it's not nice. NS's activities, for example their heritage program, are generally more appreciated by people here in the south. It's a pity, I think CSX has much to offer as well, with those many branches it was made of. A museum would be very interesting, of course.

    Wooden sleepers and not a single electrified line feels a bit old school to me as an European. C'mon America, time to modernise.

    • @BakshisMouse
      @BakshisMouse 7 лет назад

      These rails are owned by private companies, and electrifying the lines is an unneeded expense for them. it would also reduce the amount of freight they could carry. No one in the government is interested in forcing them to modernize, either. I'd like to see more passenger rail, too, but it might have to be separate from what's seen here.

    can anybody tell me what kind of engine is that 1024 at 27:30?

    • @kevinbaker4241
      @kevinbaker4241 5 лет назад

      The 1024 is an EMD SD70ACe - the latest (and last) of the EMD SD70-type of diesel locomotive. It is one of the most common six-axle EMD's on the rails today - BNSF, CN, CP, KCS, NS, UP, and Ferromex all have them on their rosters. Alaska Railroad never bought any, and CSX had 20, but they were sold in 2018.

    @mbmars01 In the video at 2:11,is that a small booster engine and how does it operate?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  6 лет назад

      It’s called a slug. It doesn’t have an own diesel engine, but the axles are powered by electric traction motors. In stop-and-go yard work, tractive effort is more important than horsepower, so the more axles are driven the more efficiently yard jobs can be done.

    • @Isotec1

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  2 года назад +1

      I guess you mean the slug. It’s controlled by the locomotive and provides extra traction as is particularly needed for moving large train sections in yards. The slug doesn’t have an own engine, tho. It’s cheaper to use a slug than a second locomotive.
