Well shot. Hard to believe that watching a diamond would be interesting but you're skills made it so. Must have been hot for you. And one can sure see how worn that diamond is and why it is. Hard working bolts them. Ideal time to showcase the wear just before that diamond was replaced.
Haha, yes it was very hot! Dalton is famous among railfans for this diamond as the frequency of trains is particularly high there (it was actually not when I was there...).
Very well polished diamond. I wonder how often it has to be replaced with 70 trains a day. Really enjoyed all the angles on the ethonal train. And again, a nice cloud shot - that one was working itself up for a rain.
Surprising what you see on these videos, at 6:30 there's a coil steel car with both Conrail and New York Central makings still on it. Nice video, thanks.
This was great! Up in Blue Ridge area now for R and R! No railfanning this trip. Dalton only 45 miles west so that looks like a hot spot for me when i am up here for good! Also the Dalton webcam is AWOL. Has it been down for a while? They have this like placeholder on the screen. Yes, North Georgia is gorgeous right now with the mountains changing to all the hues of the rainbow!
Thanks for the video I appreciate your work. I could not hear your scanner volume must have been turned down at the beginning of video. My best to you always
Thank you for your nice comment. I sometimes turn down the volume of the scanner if there is more static than voices. Sometimes it's not even close by if I have to rush to get a train lol
Great riddle you presented. Track lay out was so confusing that I had to go there in Google Earth. Ahhh yes. You know it was a 1500 feet from on top of the bridge at the diamond to under the other bridge 10:53 where the NS and CSX come together there? Nice long crisp shots your camera records. I was following the tracks to the south and came across those crazy looking lenticular mountain ranges that I had never seen before. This is called the Piedmont area n'est ce pa? If you run the video at 2x speed 36:34 onward you can really see the cars bouncing going over that diamond. No wonder they were going to replace it. Great video. Thanks for posting. Always impressed. Pity they killed the railroad on my island.
Well, it is confusing, particularly to the north, when the lines split toward Knoxville and Chattanooga. Lol, thanks for measuring this distance. I certainly didn't know that :) These mountain ranges are part of the Appalachians and yes, the northeastern part belongs to the Piedmont. Good you like the video! I'm actually curious which island it is you live on.
Vancouver Island. It had a few of those 1890s railways operated on it The E&N RW (Esquimalt and Nanaimo) operated by the CPR and for awhile another operated by the CNoR RW. (Predecessor to the CNR) The CPR and Via Rail spent 30 years trying to get rid of the passenger train (Bud Cars), ballasting the tracks with sand and using untreated ties, lowering the speed limit again and again which stretched out the duration of the run and making one book trips 3 days in advance for a ticket, driving all the customers away until Via Rail finally convinced the federal government to allow them to finally kill the passenger train. The RR was sold to Southern Railway of Vancouver Island (Washington Group) who operate short haul lines out of Washington State to Vancouver (the city) and they gave it a go on Vancouver Island for a while until the provincial government built a parallel 4 lane highway which robbed off the last of the revenue customers - the dangerous cargo trains. Pulp mills shut down so there went the newsprint and sulphuric acid cars etc. . They still access railyards on the island with railway ferries carrying dangerous goods from the MainLand of British Columbia to the Island but they don't operate out of the local rail yard. Now 15 years later, the roads are all beat to crap by the heavy trucks, the rail line is owned by a consortium of municipalities and First Nations Reserves and there is a committee trying to get the passenger train back on track. With the cyclists and hikers trying to get the rails lifted. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Railway_of_Vancouver_Island
Ha, that's one nice place to live! It would be even nicer with an active railroad, but... :) Very cool. Trucking has killed many a railroad, it is sad to hear it also happened there. This is also a strange thing why it's necessary to lift rails to create trails. Can't they just clear some ground next to the railroad right-of-way? A rail line gone will never be rebuilt. It's stupid and a waste of resources to demolish a rail line that might be needed again one day.
@@mbmars01 That's my story whenever they advocate in the media for the RoW. Rail fans certainly recognize the need to keep Right of Ways intact. As you said 'A rail line gone will never be rebuilt.'
Well, it certainly is a good spot. They didn't run as many as I expected on that day, but it was nevertheless interesting to watch them going over the diamond.
wow this is a very nice video. I couldn't help to notice when you were video taping the trains where you were standing there were some dissipating truck and some pieces of rail you know what what are they doing? were they adding new rail or they were replacing it or they were removing it do you know by any chance what were they doing?
Were you able to figure out what the were talking about @32:30? I heard dispatch saying something about how he couldn't tell them about a problem because he's not on the train and he said its up to the engineers call.
I don't know what they were talking about. I don't even know if it was the CSX or the NS dispatcher. Both had lots of problems with the heat on that day. Several heat and track inspectors were out on both lines. It may even have been communication with the yards in Dalton. Sorry, I don't remember. When filming I do not listen to the chatter because all my concentration is necessary to keep the train well in focus. And connecting the chatter later with events that happened somewhere after a full day of rail action is often impossible.
Both places are great. I never really got to see much action in Dalton because of maintenance work on one or both lines, but in general it’s a nice spot because of the diamond.
I love your movies, I`m fan of american railroads. But it is a pity, that you don`t use a tripod to shoot movies. I`m sure they would be even better . Regrads!
Thank you for your comment! Regarding the tripod: Yes and no. I have a tripod, actually a very nice one with a liquid head, but I rarely use it outdoors. I agree that for stationary scenes a tripod is favorable, However, many of the dynamic "action" scenes in my videos would be almost impossible if I'd use a tripod. One example is tracking a quickly approaching engine or wheels in close-up views that fill the entire display. I love such shots, but I wouldn't get them with a tripod. The angles and perspectives change too quickly. I use a tripod indoors for shots of my model railroad, but then I can repeat the scenes as many times as I wish. I cannot ask the real railroads to do this for me ;-) Furthermore, I also like to do what I call "dynamic railfanning", i.e., chasing a train and shooting it at different locations. I often arrive on the spot just a few seconds before the train and then there is simply no time for leveling a tripod. I have also experimented using several cameras, but synchronizing the scenes thereafter is very time-consuming. So, overall, the camera's and software's image stabilizers have to do the job and personally I'm satisfied with the results I get. Note also that my videos typically consist of 100+ sequences. It would be quite a challenge to get these many perspectives if one has to level a tripod every time.
Thanks, James. Let's hope the democratic countries in the world speed up helping the Ukrainians. It's heartbreaking to watch the brutality of a war that few people would have imagined is still possible in the 21st century.
@@cameronblair5403 Good point. I hadn't even noticed the white tanker on the front end let alone that there was a second one on the back end. Limestone slurry eh? Hard to burn that stuff.
mbmars01 nice hey maybe during my spring break in April maybe you and I could meet in Hamlet North Carolina, I've done some train watching there and the videos are in my Hamlet North Carolina and Mullins South Carolina railfanning and randomness playlist this was also the first time I filmed with my Canon hf r62 hd camcorder which has since been discontinued but the train action was intense and the station in the town is located track side with the diamond being right beside the platform
Some great trains here! I love seeing tanker trains.
Great video. Well-composed shooting showing many different angles over the crossing.
Many thanks!
Well shot. Hard to believe that watching a diamond would be interesting but you're skills made it so. Must have been hot for you. And one can sure see how worn that diamond is and why it is. Hard working bolts them. Ideal time to showcase the wear just before that diamond was replaced.

Very well polished diamond. I wonder how often it has to be replaced with 70 trains a day. Really enjoyed all the angles on the ethonal train. And again, a nice cloud shot - that one was working itself up for a rain.
You're good. A few hours later indeed heavy rain poured down in that area.
Fantastic video! Very well shot and great angles of trains!!
Keep up the great work!!
Cool, thank you very much for your kind feedback. I'm happy you like the vid.
Sweet classic action, MBMARS01. Keep em comin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great, thank you!
I moved to Georgia 3yrs ago and here, about all I see is CSX and NS! In California I mostly saw UP and BNSF!
Yep, CSX and NS are the major railroads in the east and BNSF/UP in the west.
Great video. Keep them coming.
Thanks! The new one is out today!

love this video lots of trains!! this looks like a great spot
It's not as busy as it used to be because of the changes on both CSX and NS, but it certainly is still an interesting railfanning location.
That CSX Freight Train on @4:25 was pulling an awfully alot of reefer cars.
He means 24:25
Who knew CSX 7766 had that good of a K5LA.
Ive lived in Atlanta Chattanooga and now Dalton. The rails are very much alive Nowadays.

At least 50

Is it just me or does that cross section where the trains cross looks like its makes those train cars wobbly or about to tip over?

70 or more trains a day,super busy.
Yes, normally. Just not when I come...

Why so many engines?
Would you prefer Dalton over Austell or the other way around?
Both places are great. I never really got to see much action in Dalton because of maintenance work on one or both lines, but in general it’s a nice spot because of the diamond.
Only 1 thing about Hair Intersection, 1 train at a time and nothing goes by fast.
For me that's okay - as long as there are trains coming at all ;-)
3:47 music to my ears😍👌

So the northern southern main track is the one that run threw Austell?
Yes, it's the NS Atlanta North District and it runs from Atlanta via Austell all the way up to Chattanooga.
