  • A Standard stock tube train cab ride from Ryde to Shanklin and back. These trains, built in 1927, originally ran on the London Underground until the 1960s before being transferred to the Isle of Wight.

Having spent many holiday evenings on that path near Brading station, its amazing to look at it in the past with double track, 2 platforms still open and the lineside fairly well kept. At least Brading station has been improved recently, otherwise the route is a shadow of it's past self, which is sad. The need to reduce maintainence is understandable, but nowadays there's simply no capacity for holiday season traffic. And closing the routes to Newport and Ventnor respectively were also insanity.

Great stuff, growling traction motors, clack clack contactors, old CP30 compressors, what's not to like :-)

Pre38 or Standard stock are my favourite Underground stock (Met Locos also). I remember these in service on the Piccadilly line. The racing stretch through Turnham Green, was Great! Also at Rayners lane junction where the Met meets the Piccadilly, the contactors would go spare if the driver kept the control open. The best thing was when they stopped there was this lovely shuddering noise from the pickup shoes( not evident on this video). I wish they would rebuild a unit to running order to run on the tube system again.

Brading to Shanklin, then Brading to Ryde St Johns. Lake station only a few years old, but no Smallbrook Junction. Excellent footage!

@Klingl3r Ryde is a coastal town on the Isle of Wight, UK where the film starts. So this is a train ride from Ryde....

13:00 You'd never know there's a whole other line and interchange station there now.

@Klingl3r I have not had a notice yet from RUclips but I will watch for this. Perhaps it's only for videos that have more than a certain view count. My connection is normal broadband but it takes long because the upload files are very large, due to converting them from analogue VHS videos.

@Klingl3r Tomorrow (28 March) should be uploaded here a 1 hour video (in 4 parts) of Z stock train trip in Paris which also sound even more like your old S-Bahn trains from Berlin! Listen for the sound of the door release valve some seconds after departure, similar to your old S-Bahn trains from Berlin.

@Klingl3r Sounds likely about the train motors.
Do you pay for your RUclips or do you have a premium account. How long can your videos be? An video of 15 minutes takes 2 - 3 hours to upload for me.

    Nice video.
What is the brick building at 10:58? Is is something to do with the signalling or the third rail power supply? It looks like a Track Section Cabin or a Feeder Station?

It's one of the three electrical sub-stations which supply the 8.5 mile-long Island Line with traction current, taking the 25kV AC from the National Grid and transforming.rectifying it to produce the 630 Volts DC used by the motors on the tube trains. Apparently the cost of constructing another substation to supply the four miles of track between Shanklin and Ventnor couldn't be justified so this section closed in 1966.

@@KempSimon Thanks Simon. I thought that is what it might be. I think I got confused as the track section cabin and the feeder station are used on the 25kv AC lines, and the DC lines use a sub-station. I missed the input line from the Grid as I could not see it clearly in the video. I think the feed from the Grid is 33kv 3-phase, each phase is 11kv - is that correct?
I note the section between Brading and Sandown is [and was] double track throughout, then reduced to single track from Smallbrook to Sandown after signalling alterations later on. The line is now getting upgraded for the new trains and a new passing loop will be provided at Brading to enable a standard 30 minute service to be available. I thought that they might have reinstated the double track as it used to be during the upgrade to enhance the capacity even further for any future demand, like a 20 minute service, which I believe they had at one time? Will the new signalling still be controlled from Ryde, or pass to the ROC on the mainland, and does the upgrade reactivate the disused line into the Pier platform?
