- Onboard Ex. London Transport 1938 Stock Class 483002 shortly after introduction to the Island in 1989. Ride from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin. On day of filming single track running was in operation from Ryde Esplanade to Ryde St. Johns. January 3rd 2021 saw the last day of service for the 483's.
Nice to see a brief glimpse of Ken West. He was a very nice chap. In fact all the drivers, guards (I’ve fond memories of Ken McSporran) and other staff were a great bunch to work with. The drivers were very helpful to the CM&EE staff when we needed to visit Rowborough substation (just before Brading) and Sandown Sub ...double track there in my days) when they would stop and drop us off. They would always slow down at the substations in case we needed a lift back to the Control Room/Substation at Ryde St. John’s. Drivers Peter Harbour, Jim Hunneybun, Frankie Ash, Ginger Minter (very good at catching pheasants by opening the old front cab doors!) and Tony Tiltman, et al, and dear Jim Locke the fitter and friends from the Depot. We were also fortunate to have Joe Primmer as our track lineman...nothing too much for him to tackle on the conductor rail! In fact, all the Island Railwaymen were dedicated to their job and I was proud to have worked with them as an ‘Overner’ with them during my posting to the Island. Rob.
I’ve been on this!
Hard to remember that I travelled on that line as a young kid, in 1962. No electrification back then and the trains went all the way to Ventnor via the Boniface Down tunnel. The Shaklin to Wroxall and Ventnor Town section closure in 1966 was a hardship to Ventnor, even though the station was perched at the top of the town ... and a long walk up from the beach.
About time the line was extended back to Ventnor!
and there should be a branch going through Newport, the county town, and westwards to Yarmouth and Totland and even a connection to Cowes.
Lovely trains, lovely island, I once went on holiday on the Isle of Wight in 2008 and rode from Peir to Shanklin, it was great.
What an enjoyable train ride, thanks for taking me along.
Always wanted to see the route, thanks.
25 years before these trains came to the IOW I used to travel this line on my way to St Catherine’s Home in Ventnor. This has made me feel as old as these trains....
Great video, don’t worry about those who complain about the music, what’s the alternative? Edit it with a long (maybe slowed shot) of the driver and chop part of the route out, and then get people moan not all the route is in it - or - just have silence. Either way you can’t win on YT.
I’m glad this was captured back in 1989 and also for the comments describing the staff on the island, the trains low centre of gravity and physics certainly make 40 mph feel like you’re belting along (a phenomenon similar to the C stock on the Underground - due to being so close up to the windscreen, the train physics and the motor/rheo noise, anything above 30 felt rather sprightly!)
It seems pretty scary hurtling through Whitefield Woods between St Johns and Brading
Enjoyed the ride Thank you!!!
Awesome! Unique video that I always wanted to see! Thank you! Great watch! Really enjoyable! Cheers mate! Stay safe!
End of the line in Shanklin looks so different. Great video I love watching clips of everyday life on the Island in the past
oohh, this is going to become history in 2 months when the new stock start on the Island Line.
Ah.... the familiar sound.... apart from the wierd sensation of “missing” current rail, the only jarring point for me is the 2 bell starting signal, I recall speaking to a new station guard when I was on the Northern Line and reminding him it was a tube train not a big red bus! 😂🤣.
Lovely machines, enjoyed my trips on them despite the fact that it was Morden-High Barnet-Morden via the city, would love to have had stretches like this to wind it up on tho 😁
Great video, really enjoyed that.
This was actually fun to watch
Fabulous, I live just by Lake station on the Cliff Path.....
lucky man, lovely place to live....
Brings back memories. I used to attend boarding school in Ventnor from 1986 to 1995. Trains were ok but from pier head to shanklin , you could wait a hour for a bus to ventnor . Instead disembark at Ryde esplanade
Salutari din Romania 👋 👋 🇷🇴
There could only be one comment from Driver Ken West as the train draws to a stand st the buffers stops at Shanklin: 'Pretty to watch"
a trick : you can watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Jett Gunnar definitely, I have been using Flixzone for years myself =)
@Jett Gunnar Definitely, have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :D
i for one wont miss those old trains they have long had their day , but lovely video thanks...
Hadn’t ridden them, I did in London on either the Bakerloo or Northern, my last and only visit to the island was sometime in the 70’s when I rode the old Standard Stock.
Good video
Lovely video, brings back visiting my grandparents at Sandown... but earlier when the island buildings and signal box were still in place and the double track to Brading!
BTW what's the music?

17:54 - the person on the right platform is going to waiting for a while
First time I've noticed that they converted it from 4 to 3 rail system.
It's only now that they've been replaced, by old District Line rolling stock.
interesting, I miss the trains at the wharf
Rode on one of these trains from Sandown to Ryde. It scared the life out of me. How we stayed on the track I do not Know. Let's hope their replacements are better and the P Way has been improved.
I visited the Island Line to give these trains a ride (no pun intended) and almost got my hot drink everywhere! Did love the things, let's see what the future holds for the 484, I haven't ridden on them yet, but I plan to!
What is the reason why the third rail switches which side of the track it is on every once in a while and sometimes frequently in these third rail systems?
To even the wear on the conductor shoes.
@@tonywise198 Oh ok. Thanks
Hugely enjoyable ... at least the sections without the backing track. You've got the sound of the railway so what is the point of ruining it?
Not all the background sound was suitable.
@@keithb6250 You mean some fruity language? hehe
When was this filmed? There's now a housing estate on the left of the screen on the way into Sandown train station and the shelter on the right is different.
Spring 1990. The housing estate at Sandown was just starting to be built.
magic
And no Smallbrook Junction.
Why does the driver go pass a signal at red when leaving Ryde Esplanade?
On the day that I filmed they had single track running between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde St Johns.
Correction. Wasn’t aware SLW was in operation
When was this recorded?
The spring of 1990.
Don’t remember seeing smallbrook junction
Just see the sign at 6.24 mins.
14:28 the points are set wrong at leaving sandown
They are hydraulic. The train pushes them over and they return after the train has passed.
FELICITARI Prietene 👏 👏
Why single track why not 2 tracks all way so 2 trains can pass each other?
Point setting at 14.28 looked dodgy !
The points are hydraulic, pushed over by the train.
why, oh why that pointless music?
Why, oh why that pointless comment?
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer Because i wish to make the point that one wants to hear trains, not music, while your comment is merely the cheap abuse of a shallow mind.
Probably it was to obfuscate cab chatter that they wished to keep private?
