The Isle of Wight Ex. London Transport Tube Stock. Unique film of the unloading of the first '1938' stock in 1989. Also the demolition of Sandown Signal Box. The film also looks at the old 'Standard' stock working between Ryde and Shanklin. Original footage filmed on S-VHS.
the class 484 replaced 483
Great footage.
My dad, uncle and grandparents would ride on these trains all the time back in the day.
That video was entertaining from beginning to end, thank you for uploading this
Why single track why not 2 tracks all way so 2 trains can pass each other?
What a wonderful overview of the change from a totally life expired to train to another life expired train
FELICITARI Prietene 👏 👏

Great video, don’t worry about those who complain about the music, what’s the alternative? Edit it with a long (maybe slowed shot) of the driver and chop part of the route out, and then get people moan not all the route is in it - or - just have silence. Either way you can’t win on YT. I’m glad this was captured back in 1989 and also for the comments describing the staff on the island, the trains low centre of gravity and physics certainly make 40 mph feel like you’re belting along (a phenomenon similar to the C stock on the Underground - due to being so close up to the windscreen, the train physics and the motor/rheo noise, anything above 30 felt rather sprightly!)
It seems pretty scary hurtling through Whitefield Woods between St Johns and Brading
remember these units from my visits to family on the island happy times
Fantastic video, Sadly now the 1938 stock has been replaced by a modern train after a year on rail works aNd Platform amendments . THANKFULLY A DOUBLE UNIT HAS MADE ITS WAY TO THE Iow Steam heritage railway for preservation , another one to Epping Ongar preservation railway , 2 units were for sale on Ebay ones that were stripped for parts to keep others going
Hi Keith Nice video Thanks
About time the line was extended back to Ventnor!
and there should be a branch going through Newport, the county town, and westwards to Yarmouth and Totland and even a connection to Cowes.
Always wanted to see the route, thanks.
17:54 - the person on the right platform is going to waiting for a while
Hard to remember that I travelled on that line as a young kid, in 1962. No electrification back then and the trains went all the way to Ventnor via the Boniface Down tunnel. The Shaklin to Wroxall and Ventnor Town section closure in 1966 was a hardship to Ventnor, even though the station was perched at the top of the town ... and a long walk up from the beach.
why, oh why that pointless music?
Why, oh why that pointless comment?
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer Because i wish to make the point that one wants to hear trains, not music, while your comment is merely the cheap abuse of a shallow mind.
Probably it was to obfuscate cab chatter that they wished to keep private?
Lovely trains, lovely island, I once went on holiday on the Isle of Wight in 2008 and rode from Peir to Shanklin, it was great.
Oh dear, thats made me feel old, I was at that show, luckily I didn't see my younger self - happy memories.
magic
Beautiful video!!!! I must ask, do you have any footage from the 485's between stations? I im desperate to remember the sounds of my childhood, journeys on the train with my grandparents :)
The signal box should have been preserved not smashed up.
It's only now that they've been replaced, by old District Line rolling stock.
What is the reason why the third rail switches which side of the track it is on every once in a while and sometimes frequently in these third rail systems?
To even the wear on the conductor shoes.
@@tonywise198 Oh ok. Thanks
Great film, thanks for uploading. Sad that signal box was so brutally destroyed. Love the music in the film though, very fitting 👌
14:28 the points are set wrong at leaving sandown
They are hydraulic. The train pushes them over and they return after the train has passed.
First time I've noticed that they converted it from 4 to 3 rail system.
Hugely enjoyable ... at least the sections without the backing track. You've got the sound of the railway so what is the point of ruining it?
Not all the background sound was suitable.
@@keithb6250 You mean some fruity language? hehe
interesting, I miss the trains at the wharf
And no Smallbrook Junction.
Enjoyed the ride Thank you!!!
Great video brings back memories
This was actually fun to watch
From Ryde Rail(Network Southeast)to Island Line(Maybe London Transport?)
Superb video!
What a wonderful video of the history of the Ryde Pier Pier to Shanklin Station. I live on the Isle of Wight and can remember travelling all types of tube carriages. In lots of ways, it is a very sad film to watch, however with the new stock soon to be in service things go on. Thank you for the time taken over the years to put this video together. Richard.
Thank you.
Point setting at 14.28 looked dodgy !
The points are hydraulic, pushed over by the train.
Hadn’t ridden them, I did in London on either the Bakerloo or Northern, my last and only visit to the island was sometime in the 70’s when I rode the old Standard Stock.
Lovely video, brings back visiting my grandparents at Sandown... but earlier when the island buildings and signal box were still in place and the double track to Brading! BTW what's the music?

What an enjoyable train ride, thanks for taking me along.
Rode on one of these trains from Sandown to Ryde. It scared the life out of me. How we stayed on the track I do not Know. Let's hope their replacements are better and the P Way has been improved.
I visited the Island Line to give these trains a ride (no pun intended) and almost got my hot drink everywhere! Did love the things, let's see what the future holds for the 484, I haven't ridden on them yet, but I plan to!
Nice Video A Tug of war with a steam engine that's different Thanks
Don’t remember seeing smallbrook junction
Just see the sign at 6.24 mins.
Why does the driver go pass a signal at red when leaving Ryde Esplanade?
On the day that I filmed they had single track running between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde St Johns.
Brings back memories. I used to attend boarding school in Ventnor from 1986 to 1995. Trains were ok but from pier head to shanklin , you could wait a hour for a bus to ventnor . Instead disembark at Ryde esplanade
Thank you for the great film footage. 👍🏾😎
It's Heartbreaking To Look At The 38 Stock' Withdrawal Started Just After 9 Years Of it's Introduction on the Island Line. Now to think of it straight, From 8 Sets, There Are The Remaining 3. It's Just Sad To see The Rolling Stock that Replaced It's Predecessor 83 Years Ago On The Northern Line. Being Displaced By a Train From The Same Operator, There Are Many Differences Between Deep-Level tube and the Sub-Surface Tube, Mostly It's The Body Height.
Didnt you upload something on the Isle of Wight yesterday?
Was this film, but needed a bit of adjustment.
25 years before these trains came to the IOW I used to travel this line on my way to St Catherine’s Home in Ventnor. This has made me feel as old as these trains....
