Dude's just made a motivational video so you can practice with him... Now that's something I like
Pick from the wrist and minimize picking from the elbow. That's a great piece of advice one must follow if possible
Juan Luis Chaurant Amen! I’m currently healing from elbow tendinitis because of picking from my elbow. It wasn’t exaggerated movements either.
I like how he is sitting there going through the exercises and encouraging me while he's at the base of the neck and I'm still on the first set of frets.
This was worth watching just for the advice on thumb tension and neck grip alone. Maybe it's just me that's not grasped it (yes, bad pun) but I've never seen anyone highlight so clearly the thumb-tensed-back versus thumb-curled-in positions. I suspect lots of us self taught guitarists have confused the tension felt in the former for what is actually pretty poor compressive force on the back of the neck. Totally fundamental. Thank you sir!
It is amazing how John Petrucci changed the guitar world. I bought "Rock Discipline" when it came out and now i realize how many people did the same. In all my years of playing, watching several different Clinics and DVD's from amazing players,i think Petrucci's is the best.
I know this video is a few years old, but I just wanted to say thanks for pointing out the thumb curvature!!! Nobody else that I've watched talks about this, and after I switched to curving my thumb toward the neck instead of away, I am seeing some great progress. Uncomfortable at first of course, and had to toughen up the corner of my thumb by the nail, but this is clearly the proper method, much stronger that way as you point out. Not really a shredder, but we all want to play faster. Thanks again, this is a big deal!!!
What's brilliant here is that you up the tempo in parts so you can hear how it changes from individual notes to a proper run. A lot of times it can be hard to hear what the final thing should be like
I joined JTC Guitar because of Al. Incredible and informative packs from him in particular
good shit definitely gonna try, now make a lesson for putting on lean mass
Testosterone. Gotta shoot it.
Al is easily my favorite teacher on JTC, such a relaxed style, clear and useful instructions.
I recommend everyone give the 14 day free trial a shot.
Also if anyone is interested in modern metal riffing to go along with the lead stuff check out Olly Steele’s stuff on there too, he’s an absolute beast.
Especially since you recommend it i have a question ... Did i get it right that i have either the posibillity to buy this package and download or stream it (and a lot of more courses) for 15 bucks a month?
Or do i have to buy it?
Sorry for the dumb question but i´m not quite sure
Love the interactive and motivational aspect man! perfect.
7:52 Bold of you to assume that I have courage to mimic that right now 🤣
An amazing lesson from Al.
Not only absolutely useful information but also accurate and well-founded!
"relax... don't stop", so Frank Gambalish haha.
Wow, your advice on holding the neck was spot on. My fretting hand would get tired and cramp, and it was because I was holding my neck with the thumb bent backwards, just like you said. I tried the "C" clamp and I can already feel the improvement. Amazing, so glad I watched this. Great lessons too, will be checking out your stuff for sure!
Al has massive hands. I've got big hands but was struggling with the stretch in some of the legato exercises in his instructional series but Al's hands are relaxed and seem to be barely stretched.
Bro that was so helpful your thoughts and sharing how you approach the fundamentals. You sound like JP explaining it :) keep em coming
as a person that bought this box set, I can say that it is definitely help my playing. it is also as a few lessons.the whole thing kind of plays out as he says as an instructional video where you follow along with him as if it's a workout. I just kind of wish that there was a person who could rate some of these and other so that they could show and explain if these are worth getting or not.
How long did it take you to finish it
Al is the man! Love his content and style.
Your style and explanations are ourstanding. I have almost all of your videos on JTC.
Late to the game as usual, but I just thought I'd say that this is a really useful video, and I think it shows how complex and nuanced the art of fast picking is. I agree with everything he says, and I think you can see that it's an intention to pick from the wrist, but it's impossible to completely isolate that from articulating the fingers.. fingers have small, fast twitch muscles. In order to pic fast you have to pick light and fret light as well. And at the very least, if you're picking from the wrist, your fingers need to provide just the right amount of resistance, or the pick wouldn't move through the string. So I'd say it's a combined motion, but definitely focus on the picking from the wrist and the fingers will learn what to do. Fantastic video. Will definitely be trying these exercises..
Economy of motion sounds like a science lesson
It is. Physics, my friend.
I swear it's safe to assume any jacked guy is going to be giving credible advice on the guitar. The people that don't exercise wouldn't understand the similarities between the two, but the same exact methodology for making gains in the gym can be applied to making gains on the guitar. Very good explanations here. You're a great teacher 👌🏻
Wow first time I’ve come across your channel and I love this! Subscribed. Going to definitely reference your channel. Played now for over 35 years and trying to get out of my multi decade rut. There’s hope now!
Man I’m glad I found you lol this has got to be one of the best exercises and it sounds good while playing
This is like Chopbuilder by Frank Gambale - awesome!
Can I make one point - when we talk about picking technique it is absolutely critical that we can get a good view of the plectrum. A close angle like Troy Grady does would be absolutely amazing PLEASE!!!!!!!
Thank you for the brilliant content though
Muy buenooo! Estuvo genial, me pondré a ensayar esos ejercicios, parecen muy efectivos!
I like the teaching style; I feel like I'm watching an exercise video, but shredding.
Awesome lesson I like how you formatted it like a workout video
Good teacher! 👌🏻
My fingers are stiff now, especially in the morning and I can't close them. You dealing with tendonitis and playing this good gives me hope.
I like the way you put this together, you have a new subscriber!!!!!
Very good lesson ❤😊
Wow! This is effin’ BRILLIANT! 👍👍
Great advaices, thanks!
Dude, you are a great guitar teacher.
damn brother that's bad ass its gonna take me awhile to get that down perfect...
Thanks!
Hi . Hey man you just made my day I love the way you explain no like everybody else thank you so much .. of corvette im going to follow you..
I love this. Like having a PT for my fingers haha!
Make video tutorials often. Because we like..
Nice Al Joseph 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yes yes yes
A Peloton workout for guitar. I dig it.🎸
Awesome lesson bro. Keep it up. Love you man❤
very good lesson
Thanks Georg! New Al Joseph on the way too.
I agree about the thumb position. I get lots of hand cramps and that's why. Sadly I was born with a thumb that only bends backward so it's just something I have to live with (although women tell me I give the best massages so it's not all bad). Great technique. That's about as smooth as I've heard and it's with no apparent effort. Going to have to start watching more of your channel.
What kind of massages are we talking about here?
@@TheRPGentleman I got certified in massage school and I've been studying massage for 30 years. Swedish, shiatsu reflexology... I grew up annoyed that my thumb only bends the wrong direction and how much stuff I couldn't do with it and then I found my calling. 🤣
Sadly I can't play a D/F# because it doesn't curl around the neck.
@@SDesWriter Well, you win some you lose some ya know? Keep on keeping on.
@@TheRPGentleman No different than people with small hands learning to play around limitations. I had a friend in Chicago who was one of the top bass players in the city. He was Asian and had TINY hands. But the guy could play circles around me on bass (and probably play as fast on bass as I could on guitar).
One show he asked if I wanted to jump in for a song and then warned me he intentionally tunes his bass down a step and transposes everything through the show just to keep it fun.....so I thanked him and said that was beyond my meager skills, then went back behind the soundboard where I belonged.
@@SDesWriter Asians do seem naturally gifted at everything. I think their brains let them learn techniques and work-arounds quicker, but what do I know? I'm a nekker, not a brain surgeon.
thank you for this video man!
Thank you so much for the lesson.
This helps slot.
thank you! this helped a lot
Keeping your fretting hand in the classical guitar position is the best thing you can do, it allows you to dance on your finger tips instead of flubbing them around the board with no accuracy or consistency.
Good gracious! You’re amazing!
This video with Al Joseph as the clickbait is *GOOD* !
Pro tip that made this so much easier: Hold the pick at a slight angle, like you're slightly trying to cut into the string with the edge of the pick.
only thing i find it deadens the sound? sounds so much brighter and less scrapey when it's directly picking the string
gracias hermano ...
WoW GREAT LESSON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best lessons
great lesson bro nice
Very cool
You are a machine
He was about to rip the shit outta that riff at 16:56 lmao.
Great video, I just wish there was tabs on screen, I ran the patterns as you went through them but it didn't seem to be the same as the exercise you ran
Edit: nope never mind, that was my own ignorance and not putting in the time, now I got it. Thanks
Thnx dude!!! Grt muscles 💪
Cool guitar 😎🎸
Intervals are AMAZING for your playing. Don't just play SLOW, it's a good tip but incomplete most of the time. People forget to say practice slowly at FIRST and build your way up, but also PUSH your extremes to the max with practice also. Get out of comfort zone and make SURE you're NOT going ANY faster, until EVERYTHING is analyzed and perfect. Isolate ANY mistakes or flaws and work on them individually. Build your own exercises.
great video, very informative. Also I liked the humor lmao
Good advice. It’s so hard to break bad habits……
Video for "Pick Down, not Around"

Mr Joseph, what do you think about bursts practice for alternate picking?
I've been practising exercise 1 for litterally weeks and I'm still struggling to keep up. Love the format of the video, he's a great teacher but omds I suck at alternate picking. I can sweep pick easily but stuff like this kills me.
What bpm are you practicing at? I’m gonna give it a try as well. I’m a total novice, I usually practice things like this around 60 bpm
@@brandon_945 I would consider myself a pretty advanced guitarist but I mainly play alone, have never really practised to a metronome before. Off the bat I could do about 100 in short bursts but would fall out of sync when trying to maintain it. Had to bring it down to 60 16ths (which felt painfully slow) and work my way back up, currently at 110 16ths comfortably with perfect economy and articulation. Really good exercise for increasing hand synchronisation and timing which were probably my weakest points. Would highly recommend, although as a novice I think you'd probably be better off learning scales and arpeggios tbh - to your discretion. I don't see the point in learning to play fast if you don't know what to play - I started learning stuff like this because my hands couldn't keep up with my head.
Are those bareknuckle warpigs? I have one in the bridge and a nantucket p-90 in the neck. Love it!
Dimarzio Titans
Love when he says same dam thing !!!....lol lol.
Finally
Do I have to be in the 90bmp and up club to do this..??
Great video! But there's one problem: I was just doing the first picking exercise, when I realized that my hand is literally too small to do 2, 4, 6...
Where can i get that backing track to practice with? Thanks!
Its cool to have typical LA stoner kind of guy to teach shredding in chill way hahahaha
Hey J I started watching and then went....man this sin't anything new....but yeah, it is to me...great vid.
Think that's it man. Everyone can find something new at any point.
yo, I really cant spread my fretting pinky that far. i'm very much self taught and barely really realize what I am doing with my hands but I am catching myself rarely ever using my pinky at all. I really should start using it. theres a whole 1/5 of a world i'm missing here
Does anyone know what model Ibanez Prestige that is? I need one!
Dexterity is a killah.. ity!
I think wrist motion has to do with the forearm position. If it's parallel to the guitar body it's ok with mostly wrist but if it's tend to be closer to your ribs it guides the hand to to the wrist forearm "drilling" motion... guitar is a mimetic organ. Just watch bouzouki players or middle East related organs picking technique wise. Yes I'm a fan of John Petrucci technique among others andby the way beautiful guitar brother! Keep it cool and heavy!
Big Al Swoleseph
You are spicial bro
5:06 don't worry al Joseph my voice also cracked when I turned 13
What he meant to say is keep the FINGERS as close to the fret board as possible.
Wheres the video for pick down not around. Can't find it.
ruclips.net/video/ShAZ-L398mI/видео.html I think that’s the one
I wanted to Look like John petrucci😂😂jk
But good video man, helped me a lot. Would be nice if u do more lesson for begginers and show ways to learn faster.
I like seeing black metalheads.....we need more
Kerran Thano thought you’d like to see the likes
*Tosin Abasí has entered the chat
Great work Al. On point with the techniques! Subscribed.
What is the guitar model?
what if i cant with the highest speeds?
when you are changing from one string to a new string you always start on an upstroke? or it has to be up-down continuously no matter if you change of strings?
Usually it’s always up and down alternatively - even when changing strings
So..basically it's a HIIT workout but for guitar
When I was growing up I wanted to play like Al Dimeola and John McLaughlin. Then I heard YJM
Every single time you get to the top speed of the exercises, the camera cuts to the back of your picking hand. What's with that.
Great lesson though
Evh Scale
mantaaaaaaab
What song is playing in beginning
That'll be Assassins by his band, Hyvmine! Check out our channel to watch the playthrough if you like it.
It amazes me that there are twelve dislikes, wtf is it not to like ?
@@coco37s this video is forever, you have all the time you need to learn those patterns individually and get them up to speed with him. This could take many hours... no video is going to unlock guitar for you right away, you have to put in the time and effort and run different patterns over and over until they slowly get up to pace. That's what anyone whose good at guitar had to do. Eventually it will become effortless and second nature, and you will hit the notes like you never thought you could, just keep honestly practicing. And when you practice do it intensely with focus on getting better, don't just throw your hands on the strings and think that counts, you have to truly want it, it took me an hour to write down the tabs on paper and run through them enough to memorize them... now I'm going to keep running them everytime I practice until it's faster and I'm more comfortable moving around the neck... each time you learn something like this it will connect with your playing as a whole and make you better. Good luck, hope you're still playing.
Wow 2string sweep?
