Cool to see these today, I have this same model with electric start. Bought an EGO self propelled electric mower but, enjoy running the hr214 for fun.

Had this mower since 1988, and this is the first trouble it's given me

I'm surprised it lasted that long on the same spark plug without needing to change it. Though I know that wasn't the problem in the end. I normally have to change them every couple years in my Briggs and Stratton engined mower from Stihl. I think your rust could be coming from the fuel tank, presuming it's a steel tank like most old mowers. You could take that off and what they did at the garden machinery garage my brother worked at, was to hold the tank and bash it against a concrete wall or floor. That loosens any rust inside, then they would rinse out the tank with petrol/gasoline. Gasoline is such a good cleaning agent and you don't need to use much. Also I know you've obviously fixed it now, but putting the carburettor in a small tub of gasoline, like an empty ice cream tub and using a small brass wire brush brings the body of the carb and parts like new very quickly. It was great to watch the video though.

Does anyone know exactly what years Honda produced the HR214? I had a used one that I used for a few years. Great cutting mower and well built. Not exactly sure what year mine was built. Got rid of it about 5 years ago because it smoked like a chimney when first started and the transmission was bad so drive didn’t work. Probably would have kept it if it hadn’t been for those two issues. I now have a used about 10 year old HRX217 which has been great. Reminds me a lot of the old HR214.

Now its surging and sputtering. Doesn't run smoothly. Did you adjust the throttle screw on the carb? Is it ok now? Still runs ir did you have to di something else?

If you look at the video, there was rust clogging the fuel intake, so did a cleaning and didn't adjust the carb

BTW, the mower is still running fine, no issues

Hang on a minute, did it just cut out at the end of the video or did you turn it off?

I turned it off... So I could speak over the lawnmower
