The factory ground(black wire) attaches with the hot lead (blue wire) in the factory connector for the PTO. I’ve seen the factory ground disappear due to bad connections and some people just put a new fresh ground lead to the chassis. The safety system switches the power to the PTO so you are not disabling the safety by doing this. That was my main concern. You want the blades to shut off if you fall off the tractor.
Hi Ken my Briggs 12hp engine blew up literally on the stx 38 yellow deck. I was looking around and found a Kohler Command 15.5. Would it be suitable for this tractor? It seems the one in your video is also a Kohler. I just can't tell what hp it is. Many thanks!
Its electromagnetic pto, power is supplied by a switch, when pto is energized it makes a magnetic field drawing the free spinning pulley to spin with the powered pully.
Enjoyed School Today a great class. 🙂
I've got a 165 with what I think is a bad ignition switch and ground issues. Seems that's pretty common in these older JDs.
Very interesting info ken
I have that exact issue. See you on Micks live stream.
Good info Ken.
Nice work
Thanks for watching. All the safety’s with no wiring diagrams took some time to figure out!
Very good info Ken. Do you think that ground was purposely unplugged? Roger

A 9 through 16hp Kohler Command will work as long as the Drive pulley and PTO fit properly.
@@KensSmallEngineRepair Thank you! Much appreciated. Your channel is extremely helpful.

Get that parts cannon going
The owner loves this little guy!!
What’s pto ?
Power Take Off. How Engine power is transmitted to a deck(normally) or another driven accessory like a snow blower or tiller
Its electromagnetic pto, power is supplied by a switch, when pto is energized it makes a magnetic field drawing the free spinning pulley to spin with the powered pully.
Some Tractors have mechanical PTO’s with a lever, linkage or a cable that pulls an idler arm and pulley to engage the deck or implement
