February 2024 I tried a lot of the regular tricks and just wanted to say the fuel line was the problem, ran great after redoing the fuel line. Thanks for for the video.
I have a new (3 year old) jd e120 that just started surging. I just changed the plugs though the old plugs really looked fine. Fuel filter was changed last year, and air filter looks clean. Only have 60 hours on it, so I’ll check the fuel line and other simple things. Thanks for the video
Really nice tractor Sir. You can tell that you take pride and take good care of your equipment. I was always taught if you take care of your stuff then they will take care of you. Thank you for sharing
You have decent trouble shooting skills, but aside from the outrageous expense of a new carb you now know what didn’t cause the trouble and any day we learn stuff is a good day ! plus, you have a spare new carb that you will not be able to find when you finally need to change out the old one 👍🏼
Interesting. I am having this new issue which you described. I suspected a fueling issue. I will start with the fuel filter and then the fuel line. Thank you very much!
Happened to me once on my JD L-120. I found that dust had gotten into the little pinhole breather in the fuel cap! That's all it took to create a vacuum and caused the engine to starve for fuel and surge. The fix was to clean out the pin hole with a tooth pick!! Yup that simple... So now every once in a while, I'll stick a toothpick in the gas cap pin hole just to make sure it's clean.
Thanks bud, I have a D105 that I just got up and running, new tires, new battery, and it is surging but will idle even at the lowest setting. So I’ll be sure to replace the lines and go from there.
I haven't fixed it yet but I know that's what it is cuz it's not getting the fuel from the tank at an even flow thank you for this and I will make sure I fix it with a new fuel line and filter
On an older mower, the fuel line can shrink, both lengthwise and diameter, especially if the line was put on tight to begin with. Best to hang the line a little loose when installing, to allow for shrinkage...it will only use an extra inch or so of tubing. I noticed on one of my Husqvarna mowers, the line near the tank connection is a little tight, and the mower has only been used for two seasons. The tubing could be a year or two older than the mower to start with.
Thanks for a great video. You will help alot of people ,at least ones that will take your advice. Im starting to look at my carb now and will go over my fuel line first ,good for mait anyway, easy enough to replace and I thank you for the information. Tom
Thanks for the share, I put spark plugs in and didn't know where to go next, I will replace my hoses and filter, my mower is older than yours 2006 gt245, update as I go.
Had a 20 hp twin Kohler same problem from new, only happened occasionally, could not be fixed. Finally discovered it happened when gas was low. Running tank over half full no problem. Off season I installed a new gas hoses , found a plastic swirl from drilling a hole at the factory, in the tank fitting.
@@golf4funjn532 I ended up replacing the whole carburetor, fuel filter, fuel pump, and air filter. Not in that order. I still need starter fluid to start it.
my friend flip my mower over to change the blades for me, so everything is flooded, it only surges when i put the engine level all the way to the low position, im thinking i just have to change the Carb.
On the plus side, you did eventually find the issue. As an aside, wish JD still used the clear type gas tanks. The black ones not ideal in my experience when filling them up.
I have the exact same lawn tractor and it's doing the exact same thing. It will run for about 30-40 minutes and start to sputter and then die. I just had $200 worth of work done on it and that didn't fix the problem. Just watched your video and will buy a new fuel hose and replace the old one from the fuel tank to the fuel filter. Question; how long of a fuel hose did you have to purchase and was it difficult to get into that tight space to remove the old one and run the new line? Thanks for the video.
I know this question is a little old now, but for the community's benefit: I have a Craftsman mower with a similar B&S engine and I needed about 5' 6" of fuel line. Also, I removed the body of the mower (foot deck? not sure how to refer to it) in order to take out the fuel tank and re-route the fuel line. I can see the Deere in this video is configured slightly differently; I'm also a novice, so your mileage may vary.
My LA100 was surging, run maybe 20 feet, sputter, run maybe 20 feet, sputter, finally died and wouldn't crank again unless that battery was recharged. I changed the (1) fuel pickup (that thing you describe coming off the gas tank), (2) the fuel line from tank to fuel filter, (3) the fuel filter, (4) the line from fuel pump to carburetor. Having done all that, the mower ran beautifully for about 20 minutes. Then it started surging again, same old same old. So I did all you did and more. Any other ideas?
I'm reading up on some of these problems and many have found that the hole in the fuel cap gets clogged and creates a vacuum...try running with a loose cap, about to try it myself
My x380 is surging only when mower is engaged. Sometimes the fuel filter has gas in it, sometimes not. I think I’ll try fuel line next. I already did fuel and air filter.
We have a john deere gt235 with the same symptoms and we replaced the whole gas line from fuel tank all the way to to the carburetor and still surges real bad

Glad to hear it!!
Just went through this same thing, same exact steps too. I'm glad I'm not alone in my bad tractor troubleshooting skills lol. Nice video!
Me too ! lol
A vent line clogged and I bought a carb.
Glad I can laugh about it now...
I DID SAME THING , I CHANGED EVERYTHING.....I PUT MY AIR HOSE ON THE FULE LINE BLEW IT OUT AND THAT FIXED IT!!!!!
I’ve been dealing with my John Deere doing this for 2 years. Thank you so much
You just saved me. I have an old JD 240 with surging issues. I replaced fuel line. Bingo. Fixed. Thank you very much
Glad to hear it!
You second guy in RUclips solving this problem changing fuel line.
Thank you I rebuilt My carb and still had these problems done everything you did I’m bout to change the lines

Hello @bagadounutz Is this issue only on John Deere mowers or what?
Glad I came across this video. I do all the work on my ride on and I know I would have spent over $200 too.
Interesting. I am having this new issue which you described. I suspected a fueling issue. I will start with the fuel filter and then the fuel line. Thank you very much!
Wish I would’ve found this video before I replaced the carburetor….replaced the fuel hoses after watching this video and it’s running perfectly
thanks for sharing that info👍🏼 maybe good idea to eliminate that problem before spring '22
Wow we need to start a John Deere carb replacement club. I almost did the same exact thing. (Carb, pump, filter, just to have the same results.

I switch mine over to 89 octane gas, and that fixed my idle surge and hard start issues.
It's the simple things that keep us humble.👍

Really glad it helped!
Good work. I’ve got an L111 that I can’t get started. I’ll try checking the lines.
Thank you i was just about to blow this thing up 2 years I've been struggling with that
Same symptoms on my mower, my fix was freeing up the solenoid in the bowl of the carburetor (after doing everything else of course)

@@garybregel1572 on mine is a little tube that cracks coming off the OHV cover. they sell like a pack of 5
How did you access that hose line ? Looks pretty tight in there.
My wife has small hands and was able to get in there thank goodness!
@@golf4funjn532 thanks for responding .😅👍

Great repair 💯💪🏽
Thanks for the information!👍
I never would have thought about a fuel line itself, interesting.
We sure didn’t either! Still running great to this day!
Thank you for this video
Thanks for your video 🙏🏻👍🏻

If it's rider you never flip the mower....take the deck off...a push mower I can see having to flip...

can anyone help me with my problem? I gave my riding lawn mower a tune up oil change, spark plug, air and fuel filter but still sputters.
Did you try changing the fuel line?
@@golf4funjn532 LOL....apparently OP did not watch your video
Sometimes spraying carb cleaner in the carb inlet hose will clean out any dirt. (without the hassle of taking the carb apart).
Might be dirt in the bottom of the carb

My mower is only a year old and it started surging........ you don't think my fuel line could be bas already do you?
Don't know for sure bit changing rhe line would be the best place to start.
Are you adding an ethanol protection additive to your gas? ... without it, ethanol can make a mess in your carb.

Like they say, when you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras, lol. Good fix, my JD is about 16 years old too, have to watch for that. 👍👍
🤠👍
Interesting!
I'll check that before I bypass the seat safety switch.
Part Number anywhere?
I bet thats exactly what my problem is.
changing those lines without a rack is a pain
