      Why do you think I don't know the difference. The coil operated on 12 volts to ground causing the electromagnet to energise and activate the clutch. The old one was shorting out with a high current to ground. I have an electronic degree from S.A.I T. and spent 32 years as a tech.

    I wanted to mention to people about how important it is during these summers with all that heavy wet grass that folks stop their machines every now and then just turn it off and clean out all that heavy wet shit especially around the pulleys before y'all smoke your PTO just like that one. I guarantee ya that is what smoked that PTO clutch seen it many times over the years even did it to myself once when I was young and dumb. Not being able to afford to take my tractor to a shop and what a pain in the ass it was before the internet to take shit apart and do stuff blindly with no clues as to how to do the job, it took me 4 days till I got the deck off bought a bench grinder to sharpen the blades and ended up with new blades anyhow. It just goes to show ya how a hard lesson can be learned. There ain't many videos on these new tractors with 100's of nuts bolts and brackets and wires. Just on my old tractor back when I had 2 days of running around and then I discovered when I melted the clutch I also melted the wires and the plug going to the PTO clutch which the new plug actually came with the new PTO I got at small engine shop, but that wasn't to say I was not all bent out of shape either over that melted plug. Just so people know to keep your old tractor and have it fixed. Another hard lesson you folks with these late model tractors are gonna learn real quick is the fact it sometimes takes a few WEEKS to get new parts especially those PTO clutch pieces cables and sensors. And the prices of the shit will make ya faint. You better realize fixing your old tractor is no longer an option those old tractors are starting to become worth their weight in gold. I just saw a guy with a new Liquid cooled Cub Cadet. In order to replace a simple oil sensor on the rear of the engine they had to pull that motor completely out to get at that oil sensor switch and when they did so they realized ya needed a special socket to remove it. It just don't get no better than buying something expensive as brand new riding mower and having it take a giant shit all over ya like that. A $13.00 sensor woulda cost about $300 to have it replaced at a dealer.

      @@BrucesShop I have a city guy retiring from NY Port Auth bought a used Craftsman LT2000 off me last month doing the same thing. Already he knocked the drive belt outta it going to Lake Ariel this week to fix it soon as the carb to his Chainsaw he boogered up comes in. People like to torture world class equipment. Those STX tractors are made of some good materials. Now let me know what size those little screws are for that plastic Ignition box you took out of that one and how many screws there are in under there... Nothing showing from the top side to take apart. Damn I hate them Briggs key switches. I get so many of those used Craftsmans most run fine but people are too lazy to fix those switches. I have 99 Craftsman 16.5hp it's like Brand New and sure enough all the problems with it were the key switch on that one. It really runs sweet and so smooth. It literally doesn't have a scratch on it the deck is like Brand New and so is this STX I am working on. It was parked at a year old because of that Key Switch and the PTO doesn't turn on. So I will assume the problem may be just the switch there is no power to the PTO from the switch.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 лет назад

(Relay in the seat) So sit in there before you turn the key. I have done that. Make sure the park brake is on. Sorry some of this seems simple but I am not there to help.

    I purchased a used STX38 a month ago and had 3 good mows and now the blades will not engage. I have cleaned the PTO switch for debris for a clean contact, I also checked and cleaned the ground near the battery area. I did notice at my PTO clutch that a red wire is loose and came off. There is also a blue wire, but that one is secure. I have attempted to put the red wire back on, however it is cramped in the area, plus with my fingers, it is hard to tell if I'm putting the red wire in correctly. Most everything I've seen and read says to change the PTO Clutch. Would you, or anyone else have any other trouble shooting ideas?

      As Bruce says they are mostly sealed and so are some spindle Bearings. However if ya got any Mech know how or engineering background or just plain ole fortitude guys like me remove the big pulleys on the spindle and if there already isn't a hole or two around we drill 1/8 holes certain places so you can get lubricants in there. I actually use stuff called TRI FLOW because it does not attract dirt and contaminates and it also repels water really well and lasts a long time. However you can pay about $14 bucks a quart for it. Use a bottle with a straw to put in the little holes ya made. I had a 34 year old Cub Cadet with the same spindles. That was just by drilling my own oil journals and using the tri flow about every other year I removed cleaned up the deck and sharpened the blades and lubricated the spindles and idler pulleys... Belts lasted me 4 ever too because of that. I bought my Cadet used in 1997 for $250.00. I sold it last year for $350.00. Get the picture?

    as slow as I am , if I was to l ook every torque specs, I'd never get anything done, I just zap those pulley bolds up with the impact and call it good, lol

      I think I will do that in the future. Too much fiddling around this way.

      I use a torque stick with my impact; it's a lot better than guessing.

    I specifically turned on this video to see how the fuck that plastic cover is in the machine so I can change my switch out. Them Briggs Switches are the biggest pain in the ass always coming loose. Ya know I have an oddball STX38 has a different switch that uses the actual JD key not a Briggs Key.

    My STX38 will engage the blades but not move. Would that be the clutch? thanks

      Is the cutch turning with the engine? The clutch mounts to the engine shaft. and is held still by 2 posts-dogs on the frame When it engages the pulley on the cluth turns. BE CAREFUL. As well are you sitting in the seat there may be a shutoff for the clutch in the seat.

    I know this is an older video but I have a John Deere gt235 that runs but when you engage the blades it slows down and the battery light comes on....thoughts?

      They are electrically controlled by a big magnet. Remove the belt to see if it continues. You may have a seized pulley of the clutch itself may be going.
