I owned a JD STX38 years ago. Wouldn't start one day and I almost got burned buying a new starter, until I found the loose engine bolts to the frame. Voltage drop test was the ammo that saved my wallet that day. Good info!
STX38s are notoriously junk mowers. I owned one and it would never start even after changing virtually everything. Avoid them, especially with Kohler engines. It's Briggs or nothing for me now.
Thank you for making this video. This could be exactly why my starter and pto are playing up. Bought a new battery, new starter and it could have been this all along. Much appreciated, Peter
Awesome info Terry! You know what sucks? I just tuned up a Deere 165 for a guy and it was starting the same way, I cleaned the battery connections and it seemed to help but didn't totally cure it. I wish I had this video last week haha!
Yep earthing is normally so reliable that we don't even think about it, then we spin around in circles trying to fix a really odd problem, everything is blamed but the common earth lol. i've seen a non working alternator that works on a test bench but not in a car, it has all the connections it needs but it won't produce any power. The Two tight mounting bolts failed to earth it, surely that's impossible, but it did happen.
My hand-me-down STX-38 suddenly had these issues today. Cleaned and tightened the bolt and it's going strong again. Thank you!
Great to hear!
