AAA I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW THANKFUL I AM TO YOU! HALF AN HOUR AGO I WAS STARING AT A CROCHET CHART IN TOTAL CONFUSION BUT THANKS TO YOU, I AM NOW ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE BEAUTIFUL CROCHET LANGUAGE! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been crocheting for 50+ yrs n never learned how to read charts. What a great help..now I'm ready to try a chart pattern! 😊
Thank you so much for this! My grandma taught me years ago basic crocheting, but never how to read a chart. Now, I'm teaching myself (and now my kids) how to crochet and this is so helpful. I was very nervous about reading patterns and charts and this has helped explain things so much!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I am a knitter and am trying to learn how to crochet some edge trim for knitting projects. I found a beautiful book of border, but there are no basic instructions on how to read the charts. This video is the perfect lesson on chart reading. I am still struggling with knowing when to work into the space versus a stitch, but I think that will become more obvious as I practice.
Thank you for making this video! I have many crochet books and have been crocheting on/off for 10 years but always got super intimidated when looking at crochet diagrams but now I think I'm ready to try them out after watching your vid 😁😁😁
This is hands down the best tutorial. Your patience in the descriptions is very much appreciated. As a beginner, it's frustrating when people title their videos as beginner friendly and they're not. Thank you so much. This helped!! 🙌🏼💓🤗
Here to learn how to read these diagrams. I think it's helpful as the diagram will show how your work will look which you can't do with a written pattern.
Thank you so much for this. You made what I thought was the most complicated code appear so easy. I have one question. When you see the chain oval shape, and say you have to work a double crochet into it, if there is a chain space, how do you know if you are meant to go into the chain itself or into the chain space. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial... Your an amazing teacher especially for a newbie like me in the crochet world. In my opinion you are one of the handful of icons in the business and some new like me can learn a lot from. So my official thank you for all your teachings. I do have one question I have watched a small amount of "learning to reading diagrams" tutorials and I have yet to find one that tells me how to know if and when to crochet into the chsp or into the CH st itself. Could you by chance give me some pointers on when reading a diagram with no written instructions or non-English instructions how to tell if the st goes into the CH st or chsp?! Again your awesome and thank you
Can you do a video tutorial on gauges and measurements when creating our own patterns or altering a garment they may be for a kid, but want to make for an adult?
I really do appreciate this tutorial and I learned a lot. I have justed starter crocheting from diagram and since I am lefthanded, it makes it à little more complicated. I found a diagram that I have tried to figure out, crocheting back and forth but it has no instructions as to combine the rows so there I am stuck. Do you have any suggestions?
Technically, you could do either one, but it usually means into the space and not the actual chain. Each way makes the finished project look different so it just depends on the pattern.
Hey, if the oval is that thin, what is the line going the same direction as the oval because I thought the line is a chain at least in all the directions I’ve read that’s what means a chain now what about the oval that goes lengthwise from top to bottom, not side to side well maybe I should watch the rest of your video before I comment OK I’m gonna finish watching
Hi Sigone, I bought a crochet skirt and I have some glue but I'm no sure which is connected to which If I sen you a picture will you be willing o explain to me. Thanks you very I don't know any one can crochet I crochet when I was a little bu never graft he pattern I bough has no word is tricky graft only.
I'm having a hard time struggling with this my symbols are different and I don't know why. If I had an email that I could send a picture too since RUclips won't let me post it here I would appreciate it. Thank you
To the second row why I work to the chain space and not to the chain itself; The symbol shows that I work in the chain not in the space. At least that is how I would read it. How i can tell the difference; Thank you.
It's more of a personal preference. Usually it means to work into the space and not the stitch. It's sort of an unwritten rule. It would also create a different look if you chose to work into the actual chain rather than the chain space. So it depends on the pattern you're working and your personal preference
The slip knot isn’t included in the diagram, just like they don’t include it in a written pattern. Patterns are written like you already know to begin with a slip knot
This is my question too, how do you tell if it's into a stitch or into a space that's how I would put it. As the first set of dc in the round looked like it would be in stitches but was into a space
I just found this online 'crochet diagrams generally do not indicate whether you work into a stitch or into a chain space between stitches. A common example of where this comes up is in the stitch diagram for a classic granny square, where you would work into the chain spaces; it is only through additional written instructions or your experience with the craft that you would know to work into the chain space instead of directly into the stitch. For that reason, it's important to take a look at the written instructions if they are available.'
you lost me on the second row.... Oh well, maybe one day I'll come back to crochet. trying to read patterns like this instead of it being written out is very confusing for me. Thank you anyway for explaining this.
The only hooks I use are Clover Amour. You should be able to find them at your local craft store or you can get them on Amazon here: amzn.to/2MRaEvb (*affiliate link)
Hi Lucky, I’m not sure if any crochet diagram books but there could be one on Amazon. In the beginning I always turned to the Craft Yarn Council for all of my terminology and chart/diagram questions. So definitely go check them out!
Is it weird that I taught myself how to read the diagrams I didn’t even really go into like the separate charts explaining what each stitch was. I just kind of knew I mean for me it was super easy but other people it might not be is that weird to you because my mom thought it was really weird that I just knew what each symbol meant without having to really study it. I was like well it’s kind of self-explanatory if an X would be the smaller one the line would be a chain I mean to me that’s super simple to go up from there the only ones I had any issues with was like the big circle well I would say oval and then which one meant like back post or front post but other than that I was OK and I know the difference now in all of them and matter fact, I preferred to use a diagram then written instructions
No :) What she is doing is following the top on the stitch, and then following down the staff of the stitch symbol in order to see where the bottom of that stitch needs to go. Crochet stitches are built from the bottom up. So both parts are relevant in a graph. But to know which stitch to start next, you find the top hat first, assess what kind of stitch it will be, then follow it down to find which previous stitch to place it into. :)
I’m not sure what you mean. This video is about reading charts so I’m talking more about the symbols and what they mean than explaining how to work your stitches. If you’re working on a project from a graph, feel free to send me an email at hello@sigonimacaroni.com and I’ll try to help you. If you’re looking for a video about where to place your last stitch or something similar, I have many videos on my channel that will help. Here’s one that might help. ruclips.net/video/0tBZjii7I1g/видео.html

Awesome video!
Thanks so much now these makes so much more sense!
You’re welcome!!
Thank you so much!! I can understand diagrams now!!
Yay! That's great!
When you using a diagram, how does one distinguish between making a stitch in a space as opposed to into a stitch?
Exactly. I was following along but according to how I see it, the diagram was telling us to dc in the chains, not the chain spaces...
You’re amazing explaining how to read the charts. Very clear, very easy to understand! I just subscribed to your channel. ❤️
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found it helpful
Thank you!
Thank you for explaining it so simple way..❤

How can you Tell whether to chain to the space or into the stitch ?
Helloo Ma'am.. I so love your instructions and crochet work...
May I please know the name of the book you are using in this s video please?
I really do appreciate this tutorial and I learned a lot. I have justed starter crocheting from diagram and since I am lefthanded, it makes it à little more complicated. i was wondering why it is you have to crochet into the chain space instead of directly into the chain stitch. Is it to make that cross pattern?
Technically, you could do either one, but it usually means into the space and not the actual chain. Each way makes the finished project look different so it just depends on the pattern.
Thanks for thus video!!! A big help! I have The Crochet Stitch Bible by Betty Braden. It has all the stitches and the symbol for it.
You’re welcome!
Ur vids are saving my crujo lmao
What book is that with the grannie squers in it it looks handy to own
What is the book you referred to with the patterns (you showed us a page with couple of granny squares). Around 12:00 mins into the video. Thx
Hi! This is the book I showed: amzn.to/3vfKCWI (aff link)

Slip stitch is sometimes represented by half circle.

Hello, where can I get dose crochet pattern book?
i cant be the only one who thinks she sounds exactly like sarah cameron from outerbanks!! i cant unhear it now
I've never seen that show so I hope that's not a bad thing! 😂
To the second row why I work to the chain space and not to the chain itself;
The symbol shows that I work in the chain not in the space.
At least that is how I would read it.
How i can tell the difference;

What does a slip knot look like in a diagram? Is it the smae as a slip stich?
The slip knot isn’t included in the diagram, just like they don’t include it in a written pattern. Patterns are written like you already know to begin with a slip knot
May I ask what book is that I think I have it I’m not for sure
How do i know is to the area and not into the stick?

Mam,please recommend a good book for crochet diagrams, symbols

Hi there! This video should help ruclips.net/video/I_zuoAVMobI/видео.html
You said to follow the top hat but you are doing it by the bottom of the cross not the top
The very thing I came here for, was to understand what the the last double crochet goes into but you skipped right over it.
I’m not sure what you mean. This video is about reading charts so I’m talking more about the symbols and what they mean than explaining how to work your stitches.
