The "protective film" you removed was meant to be there, you needed to remove the centre bit, leaving the surround foam to protect the LCD and also to stop dust getting between the outer screen and the LCD.
Can't speak about the protective film cause I didn't get a new screen, but the foam absolutely needs to be removed completely on the new faceplates. The old faceplates do not have this foam, and when I left it in while taking the center out, it leaves a gap visable from looking at the screen through the face plate window that the original doesn't have.
7:28 thank you so much for including this in the video. I'd been considering picking up an iPod partly to install an SSD and use it as an external drive for backups, but seeing these numbers (coupled with the explanation that the ZIF is the bottleneck) made it clear that it simply wouldn't be worthwhile for those purposes.
Awesome mod! Thank you so much for sharing. My 5gen 80gb died about 6 months ago. I replaced the battery about a year before that but this time the hardrive crapped out. I know now what I want to do with it, thanks to you.
With a BLACK rear case! I have a 5.5 gen 30 gb with a black rear case and clear faceplate, a 3000 mAh battery and 128 SSD, running on Rockbox. I bought one of those leather Griffin case and it looks INSANELY beautiful!
Yes, they make these. I modded mine with 512GB SD card and I was able to find a black custom back with 512GB on the back. Of course the serial number doesn't match any more.
I'd try to avoid the mSATA drives if possible, they can cause some unexpected power issues on classics, especially when your battery starts to get low. Other then that and removing the gasket from the faceplate, fantastic video! Edit: Oh, and flip the battery over, you installed it upside down and that is why the cable was getting pinched
The 5th gen was my favourite ipod, with the black plastic case. I was perfected after many years. Guessing the 30GB version wouldn't take such a big battery, but it is probably a nicer form factor due to it being a lot thinner. Would be great if apple create such a device, they would sell many, although many people don't have mp3's anymore.
Seen the transparent phones and all... but this is my absolute favorite project you have done! I wish i'd have such an amazing iPod. you do good content. Keep it up!
I’ve made a few custom upgraded iPod classics. Usually I only keep the motherboard and screen. Both the front and back plates are better off being replaced with brand new parts. I even went with a 4x MicroSD setup and made one a 1TB iPod. Then flash Rockbox OS on there to play FLAC files.
Fantastic video Hugh. I've recently upgraded my iPod Classic 120gb with a similar card, replacing the hard drive and the battery as well. It all works great! Unfortunately I bent up the case a bit during the repairs. I now want a new front plate and back case. I'm thinking of designing and 3D printing my own. I am inspired by your vids and may give it a shot. There is genuinely something about these iPods. They just sound better to me than a phone or other computer. I'm a bit of an audiophile and have built my own tube amplifier that I run my iPod through into some old JBL speakers. It sounds warm and fat and wonderful. I'm glad that you are able to get parts and keep iPods running. Thanks again for sharing your experience mate. Cheers from USA.🇦🇺🍻🇺🇸
@@HighFidelityFox I tried but never got the tolerances close enough to suit me. I gave up in aggravation lol. I "massaged" the original case back into shape and it's all working fine. Thanks for asking.
Found this by accident, and this video fascinating. I myself used to mod the iPod 4 and 5 to better battery, SSD, and that same face plate. The problem I found was that I installed a duel boot iTunes and Rockbox. The Rockbox is my usual IOS, since it is far more flexible and easier to use than iTunes. I found that every once in a while, the SSD upon bootup would automatically erase the Rockbox, so I would have to re-install it (basically it was just copying over the .Rockbox directory). Overall that adapter for the SSD was a bit flimsy, granted that I used not an expensive adapter. My solution was the iPod Mini (2, bit the Mini 1 is also fine). No adapter needed. I just clip in an SSD used in standard cameras. Never, and not even once a problem. Rockbox and iTunes install perfectly. Sound is AMAZING. The iPod Mini is super easy to repair. I have only put in a 64 GB SSD max. I read that you can put in something larger if you wish, but you have to modify the Rockbox wares. I will look into it if / when I need a larger drive. I would love to find ways to further modify the iPod Mini. The case is a hunk of metal, and it feels GREAT in your hands. It's strong, well made. Only weakness in the device is the clip (ribbon) from the SSD to the MB can be flimsy, lots of pins, and the slightest bend can mean hours, HOURS trying to find and straighten it. And then, of course the pins bend / break. Finding new ones is not easy. Batteries are around, granted mine only last about 8 hours. Sorry for my rambling. Subscribed.
Just a Pro Tip when doing the storage mods, if you have a 30gb 5g iPod dont plan on putting more then around 20,000 songs on there, the logic board does not have enough RAM to load more songs into the library, even if you have enough storage. the thicc 60 and 80GB 5g versions have enough for around 50,000 songs. Also all the 6 and 7th gen. classics, exept for the 7th gen 160gb have a limit of 128gb using the iPod OS, you need to use rockbox if you want to use more storage with those.

If you want to streamline the opening process, get three iSesamo tools and maybe a cheap used face plate so that you can see where the clips are located. This generation of iPod are the easiest to open. Takes less than a minute. Don't slide a tool around the entire perimeter. Avoid starting from the bottom first. I usually go side, then top, then other side and then and only after all those clips are disengaged, I go for the bottom two. iPod videos and classics really aren't hard to open if you plan your attack and have the right tools. There will be less risk of damage.
Being a fairly experienced iPod technician it pains me to watch how you opened it. Get a pry tool that can fit in between the sides and disable each clip.
I do this often as well, find old iPods and bring them back to life with all new parts and a Micro SD drive. iFlash is the best option, the other ones are cheap for a reason.
Wow! I sure hope that i could customized my ipod like that. Mine is a 160 gb ipod and up to now it is still working but unfortunately my battery still ok, around 2hrs Its a good thing that your video inspire me to keep my ipod. for further upgrading :-)
Honesty I’ve been off and on thinking over the past few years of a custom 7th gen and that’s not a bad idea 🤷♂️ I mean all I run is wireless earbuds so I could rip out the jack and figure out a way to make it Bluetooth compatible. Their is the little Bluetooth thing I use in my 6th gen nano to make it work but I wanna do something else with the charge port... so that won’t work.
The only space is basically what the new battery leaves. And it has to natively take in the signal. I've seen some dingles barely bigger than a USB port, so size wise that should be possible. The other question is, how to tell the iPod how to pair? Sure, it could keep the antenna always-on, but there still needs to be some command to let it look for something to pair with. Maybe a small button on the hole where the plug used to be, that might work.
Quick note, When using iFlash adapters you do not need to keep the rubber bumpers at the bottom the iPod. The foam pads that come with the adapters will keep it in place.
One of the few devices I'm always going to be nostalgic about. Back when streaming musing over LTE wasn't feasible, this was the best thing for carrying music around
Hi! I also changed my iPod Classic 6th Gen shell for a transparent one, the same that you use in the video. I have the slim version of this marvelous device but i struggled pretty hard to remove the old shell. The new one fits pretty well, except for the top pin (i think mine was a bit damaged) and the touch wheel. When you touchs the wheel you can feel the edges of the plastic case, there are a noticieable gap between the wheel and the case and although it works well, it is pretty annoying also. I am wondering if the slim version has also an thinner touchwheel, i really dont know. Also i have not removed the black frame of plastic protection that you peel of at 4:20, i only removed the central square. Maybe it add some thickness to this shell and is contributing to the gap, that is also more noticeable in the top side of the wheel (Menu button) than in the bottom side (Play/Pause). I Dont remove it because some people don't remove it, but i really don't know if it was suppose to be peeled off. So, i found really helpful your video. What do you think about this issues. Hi, I've build myself a modded ipod classic 5G with the cheap adapter, the trick is, to use a pice of the antistatic foil below the flex cable (to make the "plug" thicker) and only put in the cable about half the plug. If you insert it to much it won't work.
firstly, the black surround on the new faceplate is designed to stay, not be removed, that's why it had that adhesive you had to clean off. Secondly, you installed the battery the wrong way up which is why the connection for the battery was in the wrong place and you had to do what you did to make it work. For those interested in this conversion, please ignore this guy and watch another video on here for reference, also use the iFlash memory card boards instead which give better results both in access and battery life.
thats a great mod there. always have a thing for transparent did a transparent case mod for my old psp2000 in the past. feel so special as i'm the one with among my group of friends
That's a pretty nice upgrade. Well done. Just one question, don't you get in trouble with the heat generated from the SSD hitting the massive Battery. Bye
Focus on the clips, where they are, push and wiggle your tool all the way in down the side and wiggle it along when you get a clip undone. you will never break or bend one ever again. Obviously, there is no 100% safe way to open an iPod without damaging it, I find this way works the best for me! Also, when you are starting off your dissassembly, dont push your tool in where there isnt a clip, as I have found that this can seriously increase the chances of the clips separating from the rear panel, as you would be catching the rail the clips are on and not the actual clip poking out. I used a machine learning style technique to figure this out and just plain looking at exactly how it fits together, running simulations, etc. You can feel where the clips are are and where the tool shouldnt go. Hope this helps anyone playing along! (Search iFixit.com for a guide to see where the clips are in your particular iPod)
Bravo, I do have some old iPod which is suffered from battery failure or dead HHD. But I have not clue to figure out what generation it is, would you like to make a tutorial to identify each generation and parts are using for repair!? Thank in adv!
These are the easiest Apple devices to work on IF you can get them open! I have a 5th gen iPod Classic myself with a borked front plastic face, and i've replaced the pitiful 30gb HDD once already, so this gives me ideas. The screen on mine had lines through it just like yours, but lately the LCD seems to be working just fine. Weird...
The "protective film" you removed was meant to be there, you needed to remove the centre bit, leaving the surround foam to protect the LCD and also to stop dust getting between the outer screen and the LCD.

Hey! Early gang here. anyone early?
I'm never early 😂😉
I was here since Jesus born
I also appreciate customized devices. Never settle for off the shelf.
“No-ones been in here”
you got to get that clear click wheel to make it fully transparent
This is something similar DankPods did.
Juan Gonzalez For a second I thought you had Shrek as your profile pic...
Very interesting. It made me want to put my ipod U2 edition back on track, as it keeps rebooting every 10 seconds...
Okay, that's a great pod and it has a lot of amazing improvements. But, you opened it in the worse was possible XD
firstly, the black surround on the new faceplate is designed to stay, not be removed, that's why it had that adhesive you had to clean off. Secondly, you installed the battery the wrong way up which is why the connection for the battery was in the wrong place and you had to do what you did to make it work.
For those interested in this conversion, please ignore this guy and watch another video on here for reference, also use the iFlash memory card boards instead which give better results both in access and battery life.
thats a great mod there. always have a thing for transparent
did a transparent case mod for my old psp2000 in the past. feel so special as i'm the one with among my group of friends
I actually still have mine as well. I just have to look for it. This gives me a chance to fix it and hopefully it will work again.
Why on earth wouldn’t you replace the back shell after all that effort.
About to do this mod for myself once the parts arrive! So excited! 😄😄😄
Imagine living in a world that this kind of thing becomes ordinary making our lifes better!
Let's make this a thing and spread the word! Kudos!
That's a pretty nice upgrade. Well done. Just one question, don't you get in trouble with the heat generated from the SSD hitting the massive Battery. Bye
Looks like I need to get one for myself , cause back during the day these device is so expensive and can't afford
It's so beautiful 😍😍.
Like seriously. U made it look so sick.
Hugh jefferys: opening an ipod is very hard
Dankpods: 5th gen, easy peasy
Please post URL’s for the parts.
Great Video ! Made me go through my staff to find my old iPod!!!
Awesome project Hugh! I was wondering what speaker you were using at the end of this video? The white one. Where did you get it mate? Tnx!
Bravo, I do have some old iPod which is suffered from battery failure or dead HHD. But I have not clue to figure out what generation it is, would you like to make a tutorial to identify each generation and parts are using for repair!? Thank in adv!
May u release another restoration 2 iPod classic 7th gens vid at January 25th we want to see the restoration of iPod classics
Or a collection video
It has been opened cause you can see the white plastic surrounding the charging port, if I’m not mistaken that means that the color’s been switched.
Ohgod the way you opened it gave me whiplash
This is awesome on so many levels!! Nice job bro.
The result looks sickly awesome!
Nice video, well done. I'm curious, any problems with heat with the mSata?
I ask the same after I watch the Dankpods video
Great looking mod! iFlash adapters are fantastic, got one in my 5G as well.
Damn I dont know why I find these videos so entertaining but I'm loving it
Gotta say that your backcover is in pretty fine shape
Can you list the link to the items you used?
The SSD will overheat and destroy the battery making all of this fairly dangerous.
That is unless you use it for cosmetical purposes I suppose.
Weird...
