love you cow
Where at ??
Wahssup bro
Sup man; mad respects
these modded ipod classics look great!
I found a 2007 30GB in a couch 7 years ago and been sitting in my drawer ever since, I had NO IDEA I could make it new again! Thank you for this video!
you are so lucky tbh
Who’s couch lmao
DankPod is proud of you boi !
@91 Tech no.
Yea
Just the one?
@91 Tech Had me for a split second before I read far enough to see broken English.
@91 Tech get real
Thanks for the video. I found a 5.5th 80gb a GoodWill for $5.49. Spending this weekend modding w/ replacement headphone/lock circuit (headphone jack is bad). Uping to a 3A/3000mA battery and an iFish SATA with msata 1TB SSD. Even developed a little something to protect the battery & ssd which will go in last. All enclosed in a stainless "thick" back marked 1TB SSD. Looks factory stainless back & black front. All because my Ford Edge can't handle the amount of music I have on a 2TB portable HDD (constent re-indexing). Going to setup w/ RookBox to manage the collection. All to be recorded and uploaded soon.
When are you putting up a video?
I went to plenty of thrift stores, and I have only found a plethora of iPod docks. I got one to sync my iTunes library, and another to play music.
@@totesmagotes3688 werkin... like a dewg
@@totesmagotes3688 Yeah cause that's exactly what we need, another goddamn 5.5 video...
I just did this exact thing. Be careful with rock box though, I was set up with fifty thousand songs, movies and tv shows... And then after installing a rockbox my ipod was bricked. For some reason there are boot loader errors with the latest build and and rock box is no longer in development. I had to purchase an Adapter and it took several formats to not work before I simply deleted all partitions and left the drive unallocated. The ipod recognized it, but the pc did not. I finally used a old intel macbook and restored it successfully. Patience is the key. If you have any errors when trying to restore ipods, try again and again and eventually it will work. If you plug in an ipod and your p c doesn't recognize it, walk away because eventually it will.
There is a notable difference between the 30gb, 60gb, and 80gb logic boards. The 30gb models have 32mb of ram while the 60gb and 80gb have 64mb of ram. Basically this means that these old 5th gen iPods have a theoretical limit of how many songs you can put on them regardless of the hard drive size. For example, the limit for the 32mb logic board is about 7,500 songs. It won't matter if you have a 2 TB ssd installed. I have heard of ways to get more music on them but it can be tricky and time consuming (one way of doing it is to remove the album artwork and other song data). The 64mb models have a theoretical limit of about 15,000 songs. This makes the 80gb "Enhanced" logic board the most desirable. When you upgrade an old iPod you should keep this in mind. If you are planning to put lossless music files on it than it makes sense to install a very large ssd but if you are putting on compressed music files you can save some money by determining how many songs your logic board can handle and multiply that by the average file size of each song. If you exceed the theoretical song limit the iPod will start to become unstable. Again, this is a theoretical limit and it depends on a number of factors. I modding a couple iPods last year and had a blast. My favorite is a 5.5 gen enhanced with a 200 gb ssd and a 2000mh battery all while keeping the thin back. The battery lasts a couple of days with continuous playback. It didn't make any sense to go with a larger ssd because I was starting with a 32mb logic board.
No, the track limits are ~20000 for the 32 MB RAM models and ~50000 tracks for 64 MB RAM models.
I have a 5.5 80Gb modified into a 1Tb with four 256 sd Supreme cards I have 25,600 songs, shuffle works great, and haven't had any problems
Does the ipod from 2005, 60gb (5th gen), works the same way? Does it have 64mb of ram?
Can I apply this video to it?
@@Psionic10Ghost Yes, the 60gb also has 64mg ram same as the 80gb
@@josemedina3469 So is there any difference between those too that i should worry? The big one that I found is that the norma gen 5 doesn't have search option, is that true?
The iPod classic was hands down the most exciting product I bought! Went long with the first time I was able to play music in my car other than a CD! It was a game-changer! Wish I still had it.
Always glad to see iPod related stuff. Great video!
Whoever who won this iPod better treat it great. I rebuilt my S7 recently and it creates sentimental value along the way.
@91 Tech fake
Video on some rando channel: "91Tech's iPod vs 1000 degree hot knife"
I always loved the iPods cause of it's ease of use and carrying 1000s of songs with you without cassettes or CDS to the gym and or car to listen to
It's kind of ironic that apple still supports the most repairable mobile deice they have ever made.
@91 Tech SQUIDWARD, THE ROBOTS ARE RUNNING THE NAVY!
"NOT THE NAVY!"
Feel the same way about my favorite vintage desktop from my collection a glossy white 20-inch G5 iMac. Because, with just one simple screw driver the back cover pulls right off, and all of the components are displayed right before your eyes (smile...smile).
joke's on you, they just stopped supporting the iPod Touch :(
@@transitengineer I love my PowerMac G4 MDD and G5 quad for that reason too. One lever pull and the whole guts are right there for you. It's even more impressive with the G4 because the motherboard comes down to greet you when you open the side up.
I wish we could upgrade smartphones with larger batteries & bigger storage at least as easy as this.
On my last smart phone from "Great Call" you could easily add both a new battery and more storage (smile...smile).
@@transitengineer i can and have multipple times on my galaxy
Josh doing a giveaway? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
@91 Tech stoppppp
I love Home! Especially when driving the music just calms you down a lot
Lol I just finished modding an iPod Photo with an insanely long lasting battery that I soldered a new connector for and 64gb of flash storage… I hope whoever wins these iPods has a blast using them, these things are SO much fun!
I just bought a 5.5 build from Elite Obsolete. Transparent face with black wheel and button, and a black thiccboi backplate. Its got a 3000mah bat tree, 128g. I LOVE it. It's beautiful and it's my perfect ipod. I hope he starts making pre-builts with Bluetooth, or he can add them to one's he's ready built because that's the only thing I would add, and I do not trust myself to do it. I understand the steps and what needs to be done and why.... but I'm just way too accident prone to be doing all that myself lol
Edit: and now you have me regretting my color choices and makes me want an all blueboi
Somebody has been in here Im ARMING THE NUGGGET
Sub 2 dankpods
I smell a DankPods fan.
@91 Tech stop
@91 Tech lol fake
Man I got to get myself the full set of colours! Gorgeous!
12:34 awh, the Star Wars VHS. It makes me sad knowing that although I really enjoyed watching my copies when I was younger, I didn't have the foresight to put them back in the sleeves so now I just have a few sad pieces of cardboard, good times though. Good luck to each and everyone entering the giveaway!!
You forgot a lot of upgrades to make it "ultimate". Add the USB C port to replace the 30 pin. They make one that charges, syncs, and even has analog output if you use a passive USB C to AUX adapter. You can also add wireless charging, faster charging, bluetooth 5.0 with aptX as well.
faster the charge faster battery goes byebye
@@Samiam_ariel You are right, though I don't really mind changing the battery every few years.
I just picked up a 5th gen 60gb from eBay to mod like yours, was afraid the sound fidelity was not going to be as good as the 5.5g but thank you for answering my concerns!
That Wolfson was on the 4th gen too, not sure how far back it went.
5.5c was always my favorite gen ipod. Idk.. just something about it. It looked right, it felt right in hand, it had plenty of capacity, no unnecessary features, and yeah... the sound quality was great!
I still use mine each day at home, in the car, and in the office (smile...smile).
yep been there since day one, still good, i miss all the old mp3 playrs, creative zen, zune, archos, iriver, ipods, those were good days!! stealing music online, worrying you'll get a virus on windows xp, not streaming, ahhhhh simple times!!!
Still got a 4th generation iPod Nano, and it’s p.e.r.f.e.c.t. No wireless/radio or extraneous BS, only 2oz just a pure music player. _Love_ just sticking it in a pocket without worrying about it falling out & breaking when I go for a bike ride or run. I cringe at the thought of the battery dying; hopefully I’ll still be able to use it for years and years.
Not only sound quality but its the most user friendly and simple iPod made. Works great on Windows 10/11 and Mac and supports huge amounts of storage and huge mAh batteries
Okay why every iPod Classic mod video on RUclips I saw so far has this, “I just put things here and there and it worked out somehow idk lol” vibe? This is so funny 🤣
I remember actually watching TV shows on the iPod Classic. Converted the files to lower res to save space. They were mostly South Park anyway. LOL.
Just as an aside, the first gen IPod Nano and (I think) the Mini use the Wolfsen chip. EOE sells a refurnished Nano 1 for just $29, a great way to start out with IPods. Kind of like an electronic gateway drug!
i got a DankPods video recomended to me after watching this
IMO the most comfortable "classic" iPod to use was the iPod Classic with it's all metal body and smoothed out edges. But I will go to my grave holding the 3rd gen iPod above all the rest. The monochrome screen was easier to see in the daylight and used less power. The whole unit was smaller as long as you didn't get the 30-40GB model. I liked the headphone jack being centered at the top because of how it sits in most pockets. The touch sensitive buttons were relocated above the wheel and lit up red with the backlight on. This also made it somewhat easier to navigate tracks while it was in the pocket. It used the 4-pin in-line remote that worked with all headphones. After the 3rd gen I'd say the 4th gen was my next favorite followed by the 1st gen with the physical spinning wheel. I wasn't a huge fan of any other model after the 4th gen.
I noticed Home's music in the background. The rise of Bandcamp, much more music from independent artists and variety of genres made me want to purchase a modified iPod classic like yours.
A few days ago I received a donation and in a box there were toys, you know, like from McDs and Burger King Happy meal, but at the bottom (because of the weight) I found the treasure: A 30 GB iPod 5t Gen A1136.
I restored it on iTunes, load it with music, but the headphones' connector doesn't work (Bummer). So, now it has become my project and will make it the Ultimate iPod soon. Thanks for the vid.
damn I came across this vid too late for the giveaway; great breakdown on my fav iPod model ever
As soon as the video started. That song, absolutely a banger!
I still use my Ipod Classic; it's loaded up with over 34000 songs
My dad still has this one till this day and uses it when he works out :)
I used mine daily at home, in the car, and at the office (smile...smile).
Such a relaxing video ♥️
@91 Tech lol stfu bot

Looks really nice 👍
I had an 80gig 5.5G but I gave it to a friend back when I bought the iPhone 3G... but I should have a broken 30gig 5.5G somewhere from a friend who fell from the bike and destroyed the LCD and the drive. Maybe it's worth rebuilding for sale? AFAIR the board should still work
Now I want to mod an iPod.
Thanks 👍👍👍
Neat stuff. Install RockBox on there and play Doom while you’re at it 👍
@91 Tech what in the crappy scam is this...
Okay I have to ask, how the heck did you manage to fit that big lug of a battery into a thin back iPod Classic 5th gen!? I did everything correctly and yet somehow it doesn't want to shut itself together. Do I really need to get a iflash Quad!? I have a Solo.
ultimate ipod? dankpods join the chat
We need more modifications on it when need it for the air pods version lol 😂
One thing not mentioned is that these old iPods could generate genius lists on the fly - great for those days when you just don't have the brain bandwidth to choose stuff for your commute!
Bro you have good taste in music.
Thinking about it I wish I could get a 5 or 5.5 and swap the os on it for the 6th or 7th gen os as I love the cover flow on those 2
It's reportedly possible to transplant the guts of a 6th/7th gen into a 5th/5.5 chassis. Not a drop fit though, will need some modifications, for scroll wheel for instance.
@@MosoKaiser hmm interesting thanks for the info man
Yeah I also heard something about the first generation iPod Touch being one of the better sounding ones as well
ive purchased from him before great quality love what both of you do
@91 Tech are you the same fake who was impersonating phone repair guru im aware your not 91 tech no one of any signifigance would leave their phone number idiot also all it takes is one click to see that you have 2 subs lol
He’s terrible!
Ok Dankpods
Im so happy i found this
Dank
( dankpods fans go brrrrrr )
Nan-no
oh my pkcell!
This is so awesome. I really wanna build it myself. Can you provide links to me? Where I can buy these? I had the iPod Classic 6. Gen with 80GB back then and tried to replace the metal (which was full of scratches). I sadly broke one plastic thing on the motherboard where the cable goes in, and I sold it for 40 euros on ebay. :( So I had a brand new looking iPod which was easy to repair but sold it. I was a kid there.
A matte full white front plastic with anodized metal back is smth I'd go with
tbh next to no one can notice any improvement in audio quality. It's not like the iPod can play hi-res files. It's just an excuse to sell a certain model iPod for a lot more money. I'm sure there's a very slight difference that can be heard but not for the extra money people want for it.
With rockbox you can play flac files
You can also buy these already built from elite cause believe me install that headphone jack and hold switch without break it is a pain in the ass
Elite obsolete is a awesome dude
I remember I had the 5 or 5.5 gen video u2 edition I forgot wich one it was and one day only one channel of the sound of the headphones would work and I ended up selling it for a newer one kinda wish I held onto it if I knew all these mods could be done to them
I am entering the live give away. BTW great video John as always
his name is josh lmao
Great giveaway, I would love to win! those iPod look amazing
I have a mint condition 5.5 80GB and a 5th Gen 60GB, and It's true there's really no sound difference between the two. They literally use the same Wolfson DAC the WM87588G, so in terms of audio quality it is the same. Of course the 5.5 is more collectable, and I do keep it my drawer for safe keeping and I use my 60GB for everyday use, but honestly because they sound quality is the exact same I sometimes forget about my other ipod. Just bought an iflash solo and I'll be buying a 3000mah battery to have my ultimate ipod.
Where did you get the parts for that? I have an old 2008 IPod classic! I was able to save mine yesterday but I’m sure it probably needs a new battery! I wish Apple would come out with these again! It was much better than just having to use your phone for music the phone battery doesn’t last long either and I have a 11Pro and I’d rather not use it just for music
Imagine an iPod Classic with Lightning or even USB-C?! What if it was possible for EOE or anyone to make a logic board with a Lightning or USB-C port?
Apple, please bring back the Classic with updated plug in power ports, updated chipset & longer battery life. Thank YOU !
_AWESOME._ 👍 How much weight do you think you saved by upgrading from a hard drive to flash?
About as much as you regain by putting in a bigger battery.
@@computernerdinside Quite a bit more actually. When I modded my 5.5 gen basically identically as on this video (iFlash Quad, 3000mAh battery), it came in at around 44 grams lighter than stock. For me, that was enough to make it feel cheap and not as solid as in its original configuration. Ended up adding weights inside to bring it back to the original weight. Feels much better, IMO.
@@MosoKaiser Did you try the bigger battery? I'd think that would add the weight you want, as well as capacity...
@@computernerdinside Yeah, I did in fact! Totally forgot to mention that - replaced the original battery with a 3000mAh one, and before adding the weight, the different to stock configuration was that 44g.
@@MosoKaiser So I'm understanding this right, you put a bigger battery in and it was still too light?
Dope hat bro Vancouver grizzlies I love my city born and raised in vancity

Thank you josh
It’s a shame i missed this giveaway 😏 I adore iPods
You can add bluetooth, then it's perfect :D
Me: bragging about how I built a computer
Josh from 91Tech: I BUILT AN IPOD!
There are actually two different 5.5 gens, there is a thick case and a thin case. But they have the same functionality.
I was hoping that he would install rockbox on it as well.
I've never heard anyone say "kinda" so much in my life! Wow
You installed the iFlash x 4 SD card storage space. I wish you would have shown the settings "about" information for the OS. I'd be curious to see if the ipod recognized all 128 GB of storage space.
10:25 that’s Dankpods fault
Just a few things you didn't mention. Yes you could put 1TB or more in an iPod but you will probably never use all of that space, especially if you're just using MP3s. The iPod can only handle around 50,000 files before the RAM can't handle it. Infact, even just putting files on it becomes tedious once you reach that limit. Fortunately, I don't think most people will ever reach that limit. As for SSDs, the drawbacks other than the cost are the heat from them and performance impact. SSDs get warm from use so a thermal pad is needed, and compared to HDDs and Flash Storage, an SSD will drain the battery way faster.
DankPods would be proud!
For those of you who upgraded their devices with an SSD or SDXC, do you still hear any Hard drive noise or sounds that the ipod makes?
You will not hear noises because there is nothing to spin. The old hard drives could be heard because they were having trouble spinning once they reached their life span or malfunctioned. SSDs and SDXCs do not spin (quiet).
A question can I use the smaller size of the storage or must I use the bigger storage for more space in the shell?
You should really do a "ds in 2021" vid
Would you be able to link the parts you ordered for this build?
Modding iPod is like play with Lego😊
How about a “how to” on how to add videos to the IPod. I am having trouble adding videos from ITunes do to resolution issues, even though I think I have the settings set correctly.
Is there a way you can put together the iPod but use a usb c connector or even lightning? I rather not use the 30 ion connector
Damn it's pretty
Cripps would love this iPod 💙
Is there any where to buy one already built?
Actually, I think the 6.5/7th gen [whichever you want to call it] Classic iPod is the ultimate. I have a silver, 160GB (Thin) Classic.
Wow!! Where can I buy or build one just like this?
Use a microfibre cloth on your next build to remove fingerprints on the inside.
where would you recommend buying all these mods?
How much would it cost to build your own from parts?
Wonder if you can at least upgrade from old 30 pin connector to lightning lol
if only the 5.5 sound was in the 6/7th gen case and its software
If you're subscribed to Apple Music, can you transfer any music to the ipod?
DankPods vibes.....
