  • Marvel Comics Wolverine Sabretooth War limps to its finale in Wolverine #49. How did Marvel break an event that started out pretty darn fun? Dueling narratives and ideas from Sabretooth War's 2 writers; Ben Percy and Victor LaValle. It's clear Percy wanted to tell the most brutal Wolverine story ever, while LaValle wants to make a commentary on the prison system with Sabretooth. Something he started 2 years ago that got 2 comics prematurely cancelled because they were boring. Now fans are stuck with a lame Wolverine Sabretooth event about nothing interesting. Wes and Dok review Wolverine #49 and describe just how far this series and event are falling down the stretch. Wolverine Sabretooth War stopped being fun or good.

Why give Wolverine any kind of armor? He can't die. Give it to Prof X or other X-men who can die or are weaker. Even giving it to Beast would make more sense

Lost his powers. Sabretooth had that gun that takes away a mutant's powers. It was the back up plan stored away for if things went bad and he lost his powers. It went from he lost his powers to he is in armor pretty quick so it felt like it really didn't happen.

Armored Characters weren't popular in the 90's.
Armored Superman, Armored Thor, Batman got armor.
Captain America eVEN GOT ARMOR AND "light" shield.
25+ years later we get armored Wolverine.

In cases like this it feels pretentious for a writer to do a plot line that other writers have done before without acknowledging that the plot line has been done before. It feels like they went, “Oh, I bet they just never tried this!” and assumed they were right instead of checking to see if they were right or wrong. It’s the writing equivalent of asking, “Did you try turning the knob/handle?” in response to someone getting locked out of a building/locked in a room.

Proof that editorial at Marvel is thoroughly busted. Putting that blurb on the cover, the promise of a big new costume and thus imply that a bloody throwdown is in the issue... Basically lying to the customers to get that money. Fuck this mentality.... They need to read "How to make comics the Marvel Way", get their ethical compass pointing north, and learn how to write characters without injecting narcissistic projections of themselves into rhem. Like you said Wes ... It's soulless.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but Wolverine kinda has a history of taking people under his wing, right? Obviously, Kitty. Was as big a deal in Jubilee's life (minus making her a badass). It was probably overdone by the time of X-23, but you could see why he'd feel responsibility for her (from what little I know of the character)...And apparently Armor is one of his sheep too? I think it should have ended with Jubes, but is it fair to say that taking kids in is a character trait for Wolverine, or is this business Jason Aaron introduced beyond even this tendency?
Either way, the only thing that can make Sabretooth feel anything but glee is to FORCE him to feel something with a Penance Stare...And even then, he'll probably just go back to being Sabretooth when he recovers from the shock after an in-universe year or something.

I stopped caring about Ben Percy's Wolverine and X-Force runs a long time ago. I'm tired and frustrated with writers constantly making him "Dad-verine" and creating their own versions of Wolverine, whether clones, kids, or some other character. I really hoped Ben Percy would have changed that, but I don't think he understands anything about the character growth of Wolverine. He seems to think Wolverine is just an angry, stabbing potty mouth who constantly monologues about how he's a loner and doesn't like teams. Then, Wolverine would team up with somebody, telling Krakoa was a family or some lame excuse like that. Then, he would go back to being a loner muttering under his breath. Most of his stories weren't even a quarter as exciting as his covers gave the impression. I'm glad his run is over, and I won't miss him at all.

You summed up what’s wrong with a lot of writers. They see one aspect of a character and decide that’s all they are. Another example is modern writers thinking U.S.Agent is just some angry white guy and never bothering to examine any previous nuance or character development, leading to a portrayal so thin it makes paper look as thick as the Williams sisters’ booties. 🍑 🍑

Yeah I figured the length of this story would over reach what it needed to be. You could cut this thing down by 25% and you'd have a better more focused storyline. Attempting to try and rehabilitate Sabretooth is admirable, but at least it went as it should have. He's a killer plain and simple. I have no problem with Graydon Creed "armoring up" as being just human it's almost something you'd expect at some point to put him on the level of mutants for a physical encounter. I do agree that Wolverine's "Dad complex" has been pushed too far. Also the scene doesn't make sense in relation to what we know is coming in the next Wolverine series. If he realizes the notion of Krakoa was a failure, and something that especially did not suit him, then how does he stand there and tell Idie to try and live the dream of Krokoa? The adamantium armor looks cool and somewhat silly at the same time. It would have been better if Sabretooth got zapped by the decise that negates mutants powers and see the fight between a depowered Wolverine and Sabretooth. Find out who really is the baddest between them with no mutant abilities. Too many characters in this story is another problem. WTF20.

When I found out about the Daken, I thought - "wow, that's a not bad concept for a Wolverine enemy". Laura was not just a femversion of a beloved hero, because she had a well-written story and her own distinctive characteristics, and therefore was really liked by many in her time. And the concept of Wolverine's father didn't seem bad to me thanks to "Logan" 2017. But a joke repeated 10 times does not become funnier, and a joke repeated 100 times causes vomiting, and the concept with “family” and “dadverine” after 1000 repetitions will pass for a sophisticated method of torture that should be prohibited by the UN Charter.
Wolverine's family has long growing larger than it should, and the desire to adopt everything in sight is some kind of mental illness, this is not a good character trait.

Such as, for example, his great-great-great-granddaughter Rancor from Earth-691, his daughter Wolverina and his son Sabreclaw from Earth-982, and his son Jimmy Hudson from Earth-1610.
Eventually, they all could meeting each other, with Rancor joining forces with Sabreclaw and Wolverina joining forces with Jimmy Hudson, but then they ultimately have to put aside their differences and work together so that they could try to prevent the androids Albert and Elsie-Dee from either conquering, or destroying Madripoor.
A cool X-Men-related story like that would've been way better and you wouldn't even need to use Wolverine and Sabretooth from Earth-616.

I've been enjoying this run, and other then the editor changing after part 3 its been the same people all the way through. But I do think its been going on a bit to long and should have ended at part 6. Part 7 with X-23 vs Lady Sabretooth was good, but probably would have worked better as a solo issue thing. Also it was Sabretooth's son that killed Birdy, and this forced Sabretooth to go to the X-Men for help in controlling his bloodlust.
