  • Expectations were low for Rise of the Powers of X #5. Fall of X was a disaster from the start. Bur Marvel writer Kieron Gillen still managed to subvert expectations and delivered the worst X-MEn event finale of all-times. People will be studying this comic for years trying to make sense of it. Because almost every single event in this comic is incomprehensible. Against all odds, Gerry Duggan managed to deliver a better final issue in Fall of the House of X. Wes and Jim review Rise of the Powers of X #5 and try to make sense of one of the worst comics ever. Kieron Gillen craps out worst X-Men event finale of all-times.

    Back in the 80's, you could get yourself out of a story corner by doing the "it was all a dream" episode.
    Logan wakes up, "Damn, no more late night burritos for me."

      I was thinking the same thing. Only it was Jean waking up with Scott in the shower. Marvel REALLY needs to take some hints from 80s TV when they back themselves up into a corner.

    Once Hickman exited, Krakoa Age was DOA. As I've said in most TC discussions on this subject, seeing these writers trying and failing to salvage an ending is like having a fry cook trying to finish a five star chef's meal.🤣

    The thing that caused Secret Wars (2016). Enigma, a force so powerful the Beyonders were afraid of it. Yet looking at how quickly they rushed this you’d think it was some villain of the week. What a waste of what would probably have been an awesome concept if Hickman hadn’t left. What a bummer.

      It reminds me of that comic from a year or so ago (Edit: It was New Mutants Lethal Legion #2) in which a bunch of bratty newcomers beat Count Nefaria, a supervillain that even the Avengers had great difficulty battling. The writers are making everybody jobbers.

      I agree it's all Marvel editorials' fault for the downfall of the x-men krakoan era, matter of fact, they ruin x-men as a whole. Just countless bad decision from both editorials and incompetent writers. Is the cause of x-men not being good for the past years.

  • @hunterrose9228
    @hunterrose9228 3 месяца назад +25

    This whole era died the second Hickman's plans got derailed. He wrote all this creepy subtext and unsettling examples of the X-Men losing their way but the people who took over were a bunch of morons who looked at things like the Crucible and said "This is totally awesome!" Orchis should not have destroyed Krakoa, it should have been a civil war that brought them low, it should have been revealed that Xavier was subtly changing personalities to make sure people got along. But nope. Every single mutant drank the kool-aid and it is canon that Wolverine at the very least banged Jean in a hot tub, Nightcrawler started a cult despite being a devout Catholic, the X-Men sat back and watched En Sabah Nur beat a girl to death to prove her worthiness, turned their back on Danger, put people like Sinister in charge, and all that is canon. They need a massive retcon to salvage these people, but because Marvel and DC would rather listen to twitter than paying customers, this abomination will stand. They will just try to ignore it so they can have their cake and eat it too. Sigh...I know there have been bad runs in the past but there is a friggin taint on these characters. I don't care that they are fictional, they meant something to me and to see all of them abandon their principles as one giant mass? At this point, I am tempted to just pretend Marvel ended in 2015 with Secret Wars.

    • @Guardiann1
      @Guardiann1 3 месяца назад +8

      Exactly 💯. That's why this whole Fall of x thing has been so laughable. It's obvious that the Legion of Doofuses didn't have the skill to maintain Hickman's plans let alone try to call themselves wrapping up said plans. It's been a hilarious shitshow to watch.

    • @TheJohno95
      @TheJohno95 3 месяца назад +5

      I was trying to tolerate this story from the beginning because my hope was that Hickman would try to use the end to get the X-Men back to their status quo and get back a lot of the characters Marvel killed off just to spite Fox. But it's in far worse condition than when Hickman took over. Not blaming John. He's good at doing decent stories and then getting the characters to a point where the next writer can get a good start with the characters in their normal status. After he left, the creators decided the bad guys were good. Says a lot about the people working at Marvel now...

Hell they didn't even need to do the Azazel bs in the early 00s. They literally changed Nighcrawlers past twice since it's original story, which was so tragic and telling for both Mystique's character AND Nightcrawler. What is the big deal with dominion anyway?
    There's so much about this that doesn't work or make sense. Before the Krakoa era (and during?) the Pheonix was using Echo as the host. Why did the pheonix need to be reborn just because it's favorite host bit the bullet? Anyway congrats, pheonix is back... powered with the souls of countless mutants including Hope. That doesn't leave a bad taste or anything. Legion too I presume.
    Enigma tries to mess with Jean by changing her life weakening her. Technically the only thing he would have done is creating new timelines.
    The endings to this whole arc felt really underwhelming and rushed after years of not doing much.

For example ) he genuinly loves comics so has that going for him, but I think that as Marvel have put more and more stock in him as an investment, he has been stretched further than his talent actually reaches, his work seems tired and theres an air of dissasociation from the characters, a sense of Fatigue, and it really does him no favors. We are Judged by our latest works in the Entertainment industry, and his latest simply do not cut the mustard, at least where his career at Marvel is concerned. Krakoa was not irremediable, there was a way to fix it.
    All the characters that died in this era never actually resurrected, they were replaced by clones. CLONES ARE NOT THE REAL DEAL.
    If the hacks at Marvel were using their brains they would use that fact as a plot point to fix the mess.
    Hear me out. We all know that the X-Men turned into the bad guys in their own books, there has to be a reason for it, right?
    What if they are not actually them? What if they didn't cheat death after all? What if the psyches of those clones were modified by a villain for them to do bad things? What if the Xavier of the House of X isn't actually Xavier but a villain in disguise? What if Mister Sinister was behind of all the mess of Krakoa pretending to be Charles Xavier? What if Mister Sinister wanted the ultimate war between humans and mutants for him to rule whatever was left and repopulate the world with a new breed of human beings genetically engineered in his image and likeness?
    Now that would be something Mister Sinister would want, not that AI bullsh*t.
    In the hypothetical scenario I just disclosed, the deus ex machina of the Phoenix force would have been the way to go.
    The mind of the real Charles Xavier would have found in the astral realm the mind of the real Jean Grey that died in the mission when they destroyed the mastermold. Together they would have rekindled Jean's connection with the Phoenix force and with that power she would have brought back to life a bunch of the X-Men that died in the same mission (Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrwaler) and then all of them would have used that cosmic power-up to destroy all of the evil clones, Mister Sinister and Nimrod.
    At the end of the story the status quo would have been restored and the Phoenix force would have left the planet Earth taking Jean and Xavier with it, for good.
    Why didn't the hacks at Marvel think of that?

    A little disingenuous to say that everybody who says that they enjoyed Kieran Gillen's return to X-Men don't want to admit that they don't know what's going on. That's quite a sweeping statement, especially for an analyst.
    Until Fall of X, Gillen's stuff hasn't been that confusing at all as long as you've been reading it all. Personally I thought Immortal X-Men was great. Unfortunately it was the only great book after Hickman left, and also, as we saw here, it missed the landing by a mile.

Marvel is a joke and I highly doubt that Disney gives a good crap ! MCU and Star Wars franchise failure is a big ol cherry on top of the crap Suzette! Very unfortunate but that’s what happens when you let the bean counters run the show and bring in crappy bumpercrop hacks! X-men RIP🙏
