- 6 reasons why Selenium may be one of the best natural ingredients and vitamins for your thyroid. Selenium can prevent thyroid damage, reduce thyroid antibodies, and help with glutathione production. MANY thyroid patients are selenium deficient to boot.
Did you know that selenium is incredibly important for your thyroid?
Selenium serves some important functions in your entire body but it also has some very important benefits specific to your thyroid gland.
Today, I am going to talk about why you should consider using Selenium if you have thyroid problems and how exactly it benefits your thyroid gland.
#1. ENHANCES T4 to T3 conversion.
T4 to T3 conversion is probably the single most important benefit that selenium provides to your body because your body only really cares about getting enough T3. Not enough selenium means not enough T3 and that's a problem.
#2. REDUCES thyroid antibodies.
Thyroid antibodies (such as thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies) cause DAMAGE to the thyroid gland. We have clinical studies that show that taking selenium can reduce these antibodies.
#3. DECREASES thyroid inflammation.
Thyroid specific inflammation is what triggers thyroid autoimmunity. By taking selenium you can protect your thyroid gland from damage.
#4. REDUCES TOTAL inflammation.
Total body inflammation is obviously bad for your body but also reduces thyroid conversion. Taking selenium helps reduce this total body inflammation.
#5. BOOSTS glutathione.
Glutathione is considered the master antioxidant and it is what protects your body from damage from oxidative stress. Taking selenium can help BOOST these levels.
#6. Has ANTI VIRAL properties.
Selenium also has some anti-viral properties which is interesting as it may be one of the reasons that it helps prevent thyroid inflammation and damage. We know that certain viruses, such as EBV, can trigger Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

I tried everything to control my Throid Eye Disease. Steroid Eye drops and other remedies didn't work, but increasing my dosage of Selenium from 200 to 400 mcg daily helped immensely.
I'm taking my Selenium through Brazil nuts. They're the highest source of Selenium that you can get through food.
I also take NAC which makes glutathione.
Consulted with you and by far the most answers I have had in 8 years. So worth it. Followed your advice and also added a couple things in such as selenium in 200mcg doses once every night. Overall been feeling so much better. I am on T3 med and was losing hair at first for a good 4 months or more. 6 months in I have had a lot of new hair growth and regrowth. I have not noticed any negatives with 200mcg selenium so far. Been using for 7 weeks now.
I saw your pictures and they look awesome! So glad it's working out for you.
are you hypo or hyper
Did selenium help you?
this is brilliant how does it have that little views?? you deserve more attention!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I'm on liquid Sodium Selenite to help with Graves Opthalmopathy(300mcg daily) for the past 4 months and it has helped me tremendously in reducing proptosis.Since I didn't qualify for Orbital Decompression Suregery because I have ocular scarring in my right eye,the doctor was stunned when he took the measurements and realised the swelling had reduced.I explained about the use of Sodium Selenite for TED,which he had no knowledge about. Will be seeing him in a couple of months and if the reduction of proptosis continues,he will consider using Sodium Selenite for his patients instead of surgery.Fingers crossed...
Hello! Would you please share the brand of the Sodium Selenite you are using. My daughter has Graves Opthalmopathy as well. Thank you in advance.
I just got a bag of Brazil nuts, so I would like to know how much should I eat a day? Also is it better to eat the nuts to take the supplements, or is there any difference? Thank you so much for your valuable info and making it understandable. I have always wondered why there is so many people going through this Thyroid disease?
Please do some research. I have heard that you should soak the brazilnuts before eating, and only one or two a day is sufficient.
You are an amazing doctor, greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina :)
I’m hypo and I take 45 mcg of Armour. I do take 200 mcg of selenium but not everyday. Should I take one that has a lower amount every day? Also what is the name of that new Thyroid medication that you talked about having cleaner ingredients in it? Thanks so much! I have to pay out of pocket for Armour because it isn’t covered on my plan!🤷♀️😳
I have never heard of Selenium until about 6 hrs ago, someone sent me a video with the supplement it in there, and I have a thyroid. I use to take meds for my thyroid but I do not anymore. I’m interested in taking the supplement. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the great info on selenium. I’m a 50 year survivor of Hashimoto thyroiditis, undiagnosed the first 34 years of symptoms. In 2004, an Integrative medicine physician finally tested for thyroid antibodies and my own prior diagnosis was confirmed. For decades my Mother advocated for my wellness via traditional Chinese Medicine (very helpful but expensive in the 90’s and about 2012, Mother began giving me expensive supplements she’d read about. And after eight years of adding useful supplements we discovered they belonged under the heading “immune system balancing supplements”. And on in 2018, I read about selenium and for two years I enjoyed the benefits of 200mcg a day. Selenium became a game changer because when my new PCP tested me for Hashi and Lupus antibodies she announced that my levels were too low for me to have either. As you said in your video, my lifelong top high levels were suddenly significantly lowered. I promptly asked for a referral to a rheumatologist who told me years earlier that he treats Hashi. His tests confirmed that I was definitely still Hashi and he hesitantly offered the immune suppressant, methotrexate. To his surprise I gladly accepted, I used natural remedies because NO ONE had ever offered me anything to end to my suffering. His words were “You can have your brain and body back with just one pill.” A slight exaggeration that I gladly continue to accept. And for a little over a year I felt like I did when I was ten years old, the last time I felt Well.😢 I recently had to switch immune suppressants to azathioprine because my antibodies have not dropped from 900 in the last two years. Upon researching the anomaly of improved symptoms and unchanged levels, I may have uncovered another condition called Autoimmune Encephalitis which is also treated with azathioprine. I continue to take all my supplements except selenium. My FAV list include CBD/ 250 mg and 1500mg, probiotics, Vit C, D+, B Complex and heart healthy multivitamin and a few others. Just two weeks into the Rx and the only difference is their frequency. My body responds immediately so the majority of my symptoms are still in check. The inflammation in my head is addressed, memory is still choppy but my concentration or attention continues to improve. After 50 years with inflammation from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet and everything that comes with Decades with an invisible illness. Unfortunately thyroid disease runs in my family and if it hadn’t been for my Mother’s Love and my Aunt’s less successful journey with Autoimmune thyroid disease, I would Not be here today.
I would like to hear back from you because I’m struggling with how to pass on the knowledge that I have to the next generation. My two nephews and their parents have shared their symptoms with me and their going to need a concise yet informative update of what I have learned about this potentially debilitating condition.
An interesting fact while I researched Chinese medicine: it involves a wide variety of fungi which contains significant amount of selenium.
Why did you stop the selenium?
@@El_FzEq what does that mean?
@@BrokennessAndBeauty Selenium is essential for thyroid functions, and a lot of fungi contain it.
Hello Dr Childs. Thank you for the info re Selenium. I have had 3 ultra sounds on my thyroid, over 2.5 yrs but only been given carbimazole so far as the soecialist says my nodules have “stabilised”…(?!) . I started eating 2 Brazil nuts a day for about a week. I am in Australia, & the 2nd lot of nuts I’m trying now come frim Bolivia! Not sure what to exoect except my throat/neck does not ache as much already! ?! PLEASE could you use BLACK INK on the whiteboard. I cannot read the red(?) lettering as there is too much daylight(?) light from the left! Bit different looking at the transcript because diagrams are easier to remember even if I am blind in 1 eye! I have hyperthyroidism. Is selenium good for hyperthyroidism patients?
Yes
Is it better to take during the day or at night at bed time.
When I was first diagnosed with Graves in Europe my doc put me on high daily dose of Selenium (Syrel). When I got back to the States I took the med to several pharmacies to try and match it and I was nearly laughed out of the stores. I was told more than once that I was wasting my money. 6 months later (without the med) my eyes were popping out of my head from the TED.

Can you talk about or do you know the reason hypothyroid patients usually get puffy , swollen face?
Yes, hypothyroidism :)
Dr. Westin Childs what about the puffiness you get under your eyes?

You have great information to share and you seem sincere, that said if you want too be taken more seriously #1 use better lighting#2 use an actual mounted eraser board so we don’t have to take your word for what’s at the bottom! Dress the part because since you look entirely to young to have a lot of clinical experience let alone having your own supplements (if I understood that correctly) and lastly maybe bring up some problems most incur with taking meds for thyroid issues, that will help you come across more in tune and connect with this ever growing population of people with dire thyroid problems!
Very good info, just started using Selenium and feels different. My nodules are swollen and watching to see improvements.

Hi Doctor Childs...Former nurse here. I had recurrent strep as a child, and also EBV. In my early 30s I developed psoriasis. I'm now 47 and once the temps drop below 70° I'm freezing ALL the time. Most days I feel tired and foggy. Five years ago I had a FTSH level drawn with free if indicated. Level was "normal"....I'm going to assume Hashimoto's and add selenium and ashwagandha to my arsenal of vit d3 and mag. Thank you for sharing your video and I will post an update asap.

I take selenium pill with water, that has iodine drops and Himalayan sea salt in it. Been starting to feel better so far, a week in.
Hello Dr Child’s, I just stumbled upon you on the internet while researching SIBO. I found your blog very informative. When I searched your channel I noticed most of your videos were regarding Thyroid. Will you be doing any vids regarding gastro disorders in the future?
Probably not very many. I focus mostly on thyroid, weight loss, and hormone imbalances now.
I had both EBV and mono and my rheumatologist won't even talk about it. I know know that my Inflammation isn't from Rheumatoid arthritis bc., I have tested negative for it for 6 months now and have low thyroid and he won't talk about that either I need to find your clone in Philly! Thanks for the dosage of selenium I've just started taking it and its says take four drops for 200mg so tomorrow I'll only take three drops or maybe skip a day!
Thank you very much for your help.
Dr. Childs, I just found your video. Great info. I had Graves Disease and had thyroid removed about 15 years ago. I take Synthroid. I’m 56 years old. I keep researching, but cannot find answers. Can I take selenium with taking Synthroid and without Thyroid? My doctor told me it was safe to try, but I’m fearful it will throw off my TSH levels. Your opinion will be much appreciated.
Thank you for everything
I've been using selenium for a while since I read a pharmacist book who had Hashimoto's. Was she also recommends low dose of zinc l-tyrosine and iodine drops. I found a supplement that has all the good stuff in it can I take two capsules a day for that plus liquid multivitamin and minerals to help with detoxification. I take these separate from my thyroid medication but I also got on NP thyroid years ago and have had much better results.
Glad you found what works for you!
Liz E I have watched some of her videos she’s great!! How much iodine do you take? I stopped taking as I heard wasn’t good for hashimotos?
Izabel Wentz and Dr Westin Childs. My go to online doctors. Am forever grateful to them both. In a world where doctors thought i was crazy these two saved my life.
Dr. Childs do you know why I got anxiety and numbness & tingling in my arms after starting Selenium? The dose was 200 mcg (organic) from mustard seed extract. I also took Vitamin E 400 IU with it. It was bad enough to discourage me from taking either of them. Also is it true that if you do not have enough Iodine in your body adding Selenium will make your hypothyroidism worse? Thank you, for this video. You truly are a godsend. I can't say that enough.
Could be a vitamin B1 deficiency.
I take selenium occasionally, but found I can’t take it regularly (even 100 mcg), as it causes negative GI problems and cramping. I have tried 2 different brands, and they both caused the same problems.
I think this is the body’s way of telling me I don’t need it, and to back off. There’s a reason there’s a fine line between too little and too much selenium. It’s semi-dangerous, and most have no need to supplement outside of normal diet.
I'm not sure I would say "most" but there are some.
Eat 2 to 3 Brazil nuts daily
What thyroid problem do you have? Are you hyperthyroidism or hypothyeoidism?
Dr, I started taking selenium, zinc and multi vitamins 2 months ago. But now my labs show tsh risen from 0.5 to 8.6 with t3 having gone down to 0.6 from 1.2. I've been taking thyroxine regularly and yet this. Pl advise where I could be going wrong
i read abt that if u have iodine deficiency, selenium will suppress thyroid, i think maybe it takes up the iodine?? I felt Quite sick after taking selenium but i feel better when i ate more more seaweed 😂 maybe it is abt the balance
Thank you. Great video.
I would love to know if selenium is also beneficial for hyperthyroidism or subclinical hyper.
I've sore thyroid and body aches and pains for 18 months.
Yes selenium is very important for hyperthyroidism magnesium selenium and vitamin d3 helps absorb so i also added inositol and a live bacteria probiotic because gut health is also important. Im a medical student. Ive cured my thyroid well hyperthyroidism

Hello, I am taking selenium 200mcg (pure encapsulation) for 5 month. Should I stop already? I am on Nature Throid. I am recently started feeling anxiety and my heartbeat became faster. Thank you!
Shall I take this selenium for single nodular goitre??
Dr. Please help. I had a total thyroidectomy 2years ago, I've been told that I suffer with Graves Disease and Hashimotos. The information you're giving us, can it go towards someone like me?
I've been taking Selenium everyday but don't feel a difference.
I'm lost. My TSH level is at 0.15 which my Endo says is Hyperthyroidism, meaning I should be losing weight but I'm not. T3 is 1.2 T4 is 2.7. Just wanted to see if anyone else out there in my situation? Thank you.
Munequita86 I’m in a similar boat! Thanks for posting :)
It's common if your doctor doesn't understand thyroid function and believes that the TSH is the only way to determine whether or not you are hypo or hyper. There are PLENTY of people with low TSH's who still have hypothyroid symptoms and are therefore not hyperthyroid.
Your free t3 is to low. It should be in the upper 1/4 of the lab range to be optimal.

how is it now?

3 Brazilian nuts per day. It does help. Two years ago I started. GL
3 Brazilian nuts per day
You can try to get them from foods like brazil nuts but there are some people who believe that the phytic acid inside limits the absorption of selenium. I always recommend supplementation due to these issues and others such as soil depletion. But your mileage may vary and you can do whatever you feel is best for your body.
Please be careful, I was taking Selenium 200 a day for just a couple days when I woke up one morning to bruise-looking splotches on my left forearm. I discovered it acts like a blood thinner and interferes with blood clotting, I have Hashimoto's disease and was hoping for some relief but in this case, I made a big mistake. Do your research, Selenium can not be taken with blood thinners ever so be aware of that fact as well.
