    Fujifilm chose 50mm because it is a "normal" (i.e. closest to the diagonal of the sensor) focal length and provides little to no distortion on the GFX system. It's the same reason why the 27mm exists for the X-series and 43/45mm for countless film cameras going back sixty years ago ✌🏽

    Great video and superb pictures and compositions...I own a X100V (had the original X100) and XT2 and love them and I just purchased the GFX 50R body! I think the GF50mm lens will be my first lens - in the same focal range as the fixed lens on the X100 that I’m use to. Glad I found you...thanks for sharing...be safe, Cheers.

    Love your work, cool vid and I love your natural approach. It's also always nice to find a fellow South African on RUclips, especially doing such good work. I'm a serious amateur (I guess) and also swapped from full-frame DSLR to Fuji X. I love the camera, but I do miss something in the stills. I should add I had the Zeiss 85mm planar on my Nikon D750 and the combo was just otherworldly. But the video on my Xt-3 is gorgeous and I shoot the odd talking head for work so this made more sense. I'm dreaming of buying a GFX one day and will likely follow your recommendation of starting with the 50mm while saving for a 110mm and the 23mm or 30mm. Liked and Subd.

    Great review, watched with husband on our 75" TV. Please add more bitrate on your videos though, the quality was much lower than other 1080p videos. You need about 30 mbps for 1080p in h.264 to get a good re-encoding from youtube. You don't necessarily need 4k, just more exporting bitrate. Thx!

      Thanks Engenia, I appreciate the feedback. This is something I’m looking to improve on. The area I live in has terrible upload speeds, so hopefully I’ll get that sorted soon. The current upload quality takes 5 to 6 hours to upload. When I raise the bit rate, it can take days. I will certainly work on this soon. Thanks for the support.

    Another really nice review, John, thanks! I've had my eye on the 50R since I played with one at the Fujifilm Festival in Venice Beach, CA last year. I think I'd probably start out with the 50mm f/3.5 "muffin" lens upon entry into this system. After that, I'd likely get the 45mm, the 32-64 and the 110. Maybe in a year or so. I'd love to use one for my architectural work. Cheers and best regards, Stephen. (oh, and BTW, I have an X100F and *love* it. The image quality from that camera is really exemplary, it reminds me of my X-H1's image quality).

      Cheers Stephen, that sounds like a great move, if you have your eyes on the 50r. The fact that you own and enjoy the x100, there’s no doubt that the 50r & 50mm setup will do the trick. Many choose the 32-64 to start with, which is good, but a fair bit larger. Thanks again.

    Excellent video. Just watched it again to see what compositions you used with those portraits on the 50mm. Got this 50R/50mm combo a few months ago and just love it. Your video really shows what you can do with it: a lot! Looking to trade in my Canon gear for a 110 tomorrow. Was going to wait for the 80 to come out, but I can't wait that long and the 110 looks brilliant as well.

      @JohnArmstrongPhotography  4 года назад +1

      Hi Filibert, thanks for your time and kind words. Congratulations on your 50R purchase, sounds amazing. The 110 is simply incredible, but I do warn you it takes a little concentration and steadiness. At f2 with that focal length and the gfx sensor size, any movement is exaggerated, so concentrate on your shutter speeds and just be a bit more precise and you’ll get amazing results. Some people opt for the 120m because it’s stabilised, and far more forgiving, but it is an f4. Enjoy!

      @@JohnArmstrongPhotography Hey John, thanks for your response. I used to shoot a 165mm on the Pentax 67 many years ago, so I learned the hard way to keep those shutter times short ;-) I really like the medium distance backround separation on the 110 at f2, which is why I don't consider the 120 macro as a real alternative. But let's first see what the ergonomics are like, later today :-)

    I think most of the Fuji GF Lenses are much to big and heavy, fx the GF 110mm 2.0 at 1010g ! I had the excellent Zeiss Planar 110mm 2.0 T* for my analogue Hasselblad 2000 FC which is 6x6 cm (actually 55x55mm) images on the film, but that only weighs 750g though the image circle is 78mm in diameter, the Fuji only have an image circle of 55mm, so I am not at all impressed with the Fuji GF Lenses size and weight. The GF 50mm 3.5 is "small", but with a low maximum aperture.

    Currently got GFX50R, with the 45,63 and 120. My main shooting is portraits, so I found I’ve been using the 45 for full body and 120 for close up.
    I rarely use the 63.
    I tried using the 63 for street. Size weight is ok, but too slow to focus. The 45 is too heavy/large.
    So, tempted to switch my 63 to the 50. Use it for street and general carry around.
    Eventually, I may swap the 120 for the 110, but only after the 50R series gets updated with IBIS.

    • @JohnArmstrongPhotography
      @JohnArmstrongPhotography  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment Thomas. The 45mm when I used it, also impressed me. I use the 63mm a fair amount, but mostly for static portraits. If a general carry around lens is what you are after, the 50mm is the one in my opinion. In the short time I used it, I found the auto focus quicker then the 63mm, but the 63mm may have a very slight edge in image quality, that’s the trade off. Cheers

    Great location,lovely model and stunning pictures,i actually use a rangefinder camera and when i looked at the fuji "rangefinder style" medium format camera as a possible idea for a purchase i was always put off by the massive lenses it came with which made a mockery of the "rangefinder" concept.
    But the 50mm f3.5 changes that so who knows i might get one.
    One thing that bothers me with medium format digital is that its simply a bit bigger[sensor] than full frame.
    But my old mamiya TLR slides were massive compared to 35mm film cameras not just a bit bigger so i wonder if the difference is even worthwhile?
    Great review anyway.

    • @JohnArmstrongPhotography
      @JohnArmstrongPhotography  4 года назад +2

      Thanks Stephen, I appreciate the question. It’s a tough one when it comes to comparing the gfx 44x33 sensor to a 35mm sensor. You are right, there is a difference, but not massive. A 35mm sensor system offers you a wider range of lenses, and generally more options around the system. If you tend to shot wide and shallow, a 35mm system will offer you the ability to match the gfx with a wide array of really fast lenses.
      Coming from an x series Fuji camera to a gfx sensor is a real treat, and one can see a difference, although the x series has its obvious benefits in certain circumstances. Without doing any testing as yet compared to 35mm, my guess would be a slight improvement when printing really large and maintaining quality, better high ISO performance, the gfx does really well, 50mp across a larger sensor, and really good quality lenses, Fujifilm make superb lenses. I think most importantly you avail of the features found in the x series system in a medium format, portability without loss of quality, the beautiful colour and simulations Fujifilm uniquely offers. If you are someone who does a fair amount of editing and shoots RAW, then you can create any look you like with a RAW file on any system, but if you are looking for images processed in camera alongside your RAWs, to share quickly with others, Fujifilm is top of the pile. Hope this helps a bit.

      @JohnArmstrongPhotography  4 года назад

      Thanks Cevrim, I’ve briefly used the 45mm, it too is a fantastic lens, it has that 35mm field of view equivalence which many enjoy, a bit faster aperture wise, focuses a bit closer to the subject and maybe has the edge in sharpness. But bang for buck, the 50mm is exceptional as well as nice and compact.

    • @JohnArmstrongPhotography
      @JohnArmstrongPhotography  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for question. Yes absolutely, the 50r can be used at weddings. If you look at the entire wedding, then it may not always be well suited. It has contrast detect auto focus, where the x series bodies have both contrast and phase detect, so it may not be the fastest focuser in low light situations. If you use it only for your main portrait sessions at weddings, then perfect.

If street and people are your thing, there’s lots to offer. The Atlantic side has breathtaking beaches, mountain views and big homes. The Indian Ocean side has a more rustic / old feel, lots of character. Town and the V&A has the markets and streets with table mountain as a backdrop. You got the wine farm areas. • @JohnArmstrongPhotography
      @JohnArmstrongPhotography  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for your time and question. Generally the shoots I do are done in a short amount of time, so setting white balance for each setup is not practical. I use auto white balance, then in post (Lightroom) I set the white balance. Then you can copy that white balance onto the other images from the same setup. I actually pay closer attention to HSL in Lightroom, hue, luminance and saturation far more then I worry about white balance. I don’t use any filters except for neutral density if I’m keeping to a flash sync speed in bright ambient light and I want to shoot wide open for portraits. Hope this helps.

    50mm on 44:33 is wide for 'fill the frame' head, head /shoulder, 1/2. Probably swell for group shots at f8. The ongoing reduced price point may partially reflect these limitations. A wider lens is available for landscape and the optimal 110mm for people.
    Not a fan of shooting into the sun for pretty much any content and recounting that you only took one lens to force yourself to make it work is laughably contrived- like an assignment from a professor at school, not a professional with a store.
    A pound or three has never been an issue. I have used P67s for decades. It weighs what it weighs and accordingly I get the corresponding IQ in return.
