I've been semi-pro for the last 10+ years which works out fine for me. During that time I always come across cameras that I call must haves because of their functionality, image quality, feel, etc. Fuji medium format cameras are becoming that must have equipment for me. Of course by the time of this comment the 50sII and 100s have come out for amazing prices but that 50r is still on my list as it reminds me of my XE-2. Your images are very inspiring particularly the one of your son and the Asian woman in black and white. The details of your sons photo and the contrast of the woman are amazing. I may have to let go of my RZ67 Pro kit to help finance this one. Thanks for a great video and information.
Kevin, I absolutely enjoyed this real world review. There was quite a bit of food for thought in your commentary. I am one of those who sold my entire kit to purchase the 50s and the 63 2.8. I’ve since shaped that kit to my style by replacing the 63 with the 45 2.8 and adding the 110 f2. At point I owned all 6 GF lenses. And I love what this kit allows me to do, but I did miss the speed of my X-Pro2. And I missed my favorite XF glass. So when Fujifilm offered a body with IBIS, I jumped all over it. And next I brought back into the fold my beloved 16 1.4, 23 1.4, 56 1.2, & 90 f2. And Kevin I have to tell you, I’m not a Pro photographer, I’m a 32 year military vet who have absolute joy using a camera to make the invisible, visible. And I’ve got my eyes locked fretchingly towards the new 200 f2. Had one when I owned Nikon and loved the bokeh. I shot this lens at Fuji Square while in Tokyo and I’m in love with this focal length all over again. Continued success to you and yours. Chaplain
I watched this video on my Plasma screen and seeing the stills was a jaw-dropping moment. The old man, the kid with the goggles, the two girls on the couch ... Beautiful! And the quality, even though it's youtube, looks better than anything I've seen before.
Kevin, the camera is very capable, no doubt, but it's the operator I want to acknowledge. I have studied your images for a while and I don't exaggerate in saying that they are moving. I'm sure people shed tears when they see their wedding or family occasion through your lens. Your images here, as elsewhere, have a human depth and timelessness that transcend whatever machine is used to make them. I think Fujifilm's great contribution is in offering cameras that enable photographers like you love to work with their tools.
Thanks for your review Kevin. I loved the intro (with an oblique reference to the Texas Leica), and the sample images you showed while you spoke really blew me away. Wonderful shots.
Kevin, Perceptive thoughts. Absolutely splendid photography, and superb storytelling in both your images and in how you describe your relationship to the machines in your hands. Bravo!
I shot medium format film with a Mamiya 645AF years ago, and I am contemplating getting this camera. I am mostly interested in street photography, portrait, and landscape. A few things that concern me about this camera are camera vibration, AF, and fps. One of the things that I remember from back when I shot with the 645 was having to be extremely careful when shooting without a tripod. I tried hold camera as close to my body to get as sharp an image as possible. Still, I could tell in some images that the sharpness wasn’t as good as I hoped. Now granted thing have improved over the past 20 years. However, this camera has no in-body stabilization. Anyone that has experience with this camera care to comment on their experiences trying to do handheld street photography or trying to capture candid photos without a tripod.
I've watched this video dozens of times and is what peaked my interest in this camera and so from my wife's constant support and your perception, I purchased the 50r and I thank you.
The colours/tones/shades and three-dimensionality (my made-up term!) really shine through on your images Kevin - I only have an X-T1 with 16-50mm OIS II, but I am loving the colour profiles and ease of use, not to mention the light weight. I feel as if I have carried heavier loaves of bread! I really do have to commend Fujifilm for making photography interesting, but fun again. Not bad for a young man who started out with an old Finepix A120 with only 3 megapixels waaaay back in 1999.
That was fantastic. I’ve been considering the gfx 50r for about a year and torn between it and the Nikon z7.... you’ve convinced me the gfx is for me. The montage you did at the end with the music was beautiful my man. Wow fantastic. Your content is appreciated. God bless !
Kevin, it's a joy to watch your view on the GFX50R. I write this also because there are some 'colleagues' posing themselves instead of presenting a camera. I know this isn't a full compliment, but take my word: thank you. Jan
What a great review Kevin amazing photos as always ,Just love your work. You just make people want to go out and shoot , looking forward to your next review . many thanks gman.
A very well rendered review by an excellent photographer. I'm a full time wedding/portrait/family pro and I've been going back and forth between the 50S and the 50R as to what I intend to purchase (likely with the 45 and 63 as well and perhaps, somewhere down the road after I recover, the 110.) I've shot with two Sony A7r III's with Sigma Art primes for the last 1.5 years and despite the massive size, I've enjoyed the results immensely. The dynamic range and the focus accuracy, as well as the image quality, is simply the best I've gotten across any system. All that said, I shot Fuji for all of 2014 and 4+ years later still cannot get it out of my head. It was, by far, the most enjoyable system to use. I lived on the 23 and 56 (and the occasional 14 and 35) and shot an X-E2 and X-T1. This new format coming out couldn't have come at a better time, as though I've been terribly satisfied with the Sony gear because of the results, I can hardly call it "fun" to use. It's reliable and it's a true workhorse system, but I need to be having a good time with the tactile nature of the process again. Anyway, sorry to babble on, but I've admired your work for years and this is the first time I've heard you speak and I so very much appreciate the clarity you've shown in laying out the strengths and weaknesses of these new cameras and lenses. Now I really can't wait to get my hands on a 50R and start getting out there with it. Much thanks again-
First 2 photos at the end, it felt like it was moving. My heart was moving for sure. I've tried 50s before and I'm quite aware of how the camera works, and your photography, craftmanship is just inspiring. I don't know if I can even handle gfx series. But just like how I dream of getting a porsche, I'd love to buy one. It's closer dream than a porsche, so I may some time in near future.
Kevin after watching most of your videos I have just ordered an X series Fuji. I'm not ready to abandon my Canon gear, or even my Sony NEX cameras, but I now feel compelled to give Fuji a try.
Great review! I played with the 50r this weekend at Unique Photo and was very impressed. I will likely purchase it soon. Your review has helped in the decision.
Thank you very much your review is just what I needed. I appreciate it. The image quality is simply stunning. I shoot portraits and I'll finally be able to get rid of my Canon Mark IV and definitely use Fuji only.
Agree absolutely. The XPro2 just has *soul* and the GFX50R is an extension of that. I would have watched your video for the images alone, btw. Beautiful work. Thanks.
Nice review. As a fan of the X-pro series, I am happy to see Fujifilm make a medium format camera that resembles the form factor of the X-pro.😍There is just that something about the X-pro camera that makes taking pictures a bit more enjoyable.
Super film Kevin... the stills are amazing... love the rendition and fall off... I wouldn't be rushing out to buy one for teh kind of work I do, but then thats not the point of this I think... it shows what CAN be achieved and done. It's a beast, thats for sure!!!!
Oh dear Kevin, I've been mulling the GFX 50R over for a little while now, especially with the lens deals available when pre ordering. I think you may have just tipped me over the edge with those black and white images. That's exactly the reason I am considering this camera for documentary projects here in Asia. Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it was really helpful. Now wheres my credit card...
You're forgiven :D Lovely images by the way. I've seen a lot of comparisons with high megapixel 35mm format cameras and the stats say they're quite close in performance but there is something about the Fuji files which look much better to my eye. The tonality and focus fall off really give the images a depth and bring them to life. Do you find the AF works well enough for candid portraits and does eye AF work in continuous AF or just single AF mode? I'm thinking of picking one of these up with the 63mm lens to start although my preference would be the 45mm + 110mm but thats probably out of my budget at the moment.
Good review, Kevin. I love using my GXF 50S - but I won't be getting the 50R as I'm not a huge rangefinder style fan. However, I'm sure this camera will excite quite a few photographers out there !
Thanks for this Kevin, That’s amazing that you could use that on the dance floor with moving subjects! I was going to query how the AF performs in low light but I guess that answers my question. I guess If it can handle low light dance action it can pretty much keep up with any other part of the wedding day. 👍
Nice review of a lovely looking camera. Like an XE3 on steroids. Not that I'm ever going to buy one of course. Way to much money for a hobbyist like me. Glad to see it ticked your boxes Kev. Enjoy Photokina!
Bonjour from Paris and Bastia. More than interesting review. I thought it could be a bigger xPro 2 and i agree with when you say it’s not. Still, it’s quite appealing and i need to go to my local camera store so i can feel it. i’m a huge xPro 2 fan and more than happy with my mistress (as my wife calls it) 😂🤣
I've really been considering this for my landscape work. I could really use the increased resolution for the textures of trees in the distance. That's where my X-T3 struggles. While it still makes a usable image, it's hard to print large images of finely detailed landscapes. The resolution just ins't there. I like this one more than the 50S for its smaller, lighter weight. Hiking up mountains won't be so much of a burden. Something a lot of people don't mention with this camera is the ability to shoot full frame by setting the sensor to 35mm, which will only use the center full frame sized portion of the sensor and allow you to use full frame lenses without having to crop in post. Granted, I don't think this option was available before this camera or video was released. I believe it was a firmware update after release but that is a big selling point for people. Being able to adapt your full frame or 35mm film lenses could be the difference between selling your camera gear or keeping it
Subscribed ! Awesome review . Very detailed .... and the last photo slide is breathtaking... simply stunning .... what music piece did you used ? May i ask ?
Sure is a great camera. Tom Heaton called it the "perfect landscape camera". Love the review, it's all about handling the camera, getting used to it and finding out how it works. It's very clear this just works... Shot with the woman on the steps is amazing!
Hi Kevin, thanks for the informative video. I’m currently shooting studio and environmental portraiture with a Sony A7Riii and a Nikon D850. From my somewhat limited knowledge of Medium Format the fact that these 2 FF cameras have sensors almost at 50 is only part of the story. I’m hoping to create something different and compelling for my clients to want to buy beautiful, large wall art. I have been looking at the 50S but now I’m considering the 50R. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Wow, the first real view of this camera and the results that I've seen! Thank you! If they come out with a wide lens that is equivalent to a 15mm (FF) then I will trade my Sony and Leica to get it. (While probably still keeping my xPro1 and D750). Beautiful camera and images!
Hi Kevin :D As usual, a real photographer's point of view: it's always interesting to hear that, no matter what camera you use, what we care is IN the picture, not what we using for make it. By the way, what's the light system you use in this video? I like it! Keep going, hope you're doing well. Take care Vincenzo
Good down to earth review here, I saw that the 50R will not include Eterna film simulation, which I like a lot on my X-H1. One question: what was the lens in the second bw image in the last series at 25:05 (man with straw hat)? The 63 or longer? Thanks...
Kevin, another great video as always. I love your work and find you very inspirational. Just wondered what you thought of the GF 63mm lens for the GFX 50R? I want a lens for head and shoulder, maybe full body portraits, in a small home studio, roughly 15ft by 15ft in size. I thought the 63mm lens would be right for that studio and type of shots. Thank you.
Solid review and a lot of sense, this new camera isn't for everyone, so why are some reviewers (DP 'we love everything *ony' Review etc) because it can't keep up with 11+ frames per second of the latest (*ony) cameras.Such nonsense makes me question their motives.... If I was still shooting weddings I would be dying to try the latest Fuji out.
I love love love those photos of the kids in your car..! amazing angles and amazing colors., skin tones, how did you find the autofocus apparatus of the 50R?
Excellent thank you, I totally get preferring to use a "rangefinder" type camera also my favourite format/design I own a X30 (started on) and a XE1 which I love.
I really, really love the tilting and rotating EVF of the 50S... I think I would sorely miss that on the 50R, though I certainly appreciate the smaller size... difficult decisions.
Beautiful, and I love the tilt for the candid-friendly form-factor (hoping it comes to X-Pro/X-E and/or X100X) I love the prospect of 33mm x 33mm square format photo's from my voigtlaender/zeiss rangefinder lenses. Please compare the 45mm / 50mm / 63mm lenses.
Thanks for your review. I do a mix of studio work and motorsports, so my 1Dx has been a great workhorse. I've been waiting for Canon to come out with something grand and they haven't, but it seems Fuji keeps pushing forward. Now with C1 support, it might be the time I make the switch!
At the moment, if I going to buy 1 lens whichone you prefer for me? 45mm or 63mm, since I like portrait & landscape. The portrait I like is the one inlude background which support main object, like leading line or put some composition, it’s not tight portrait. Thanks.
AH I'm in such a predicament with all this new stuff coming out. I've been shooting a 5Diii for the last few years and I get fantastic results still out of it but of course I want something fun and new. I also use a Hasselblad 500CM and Mamiya 645 Pro Film cameras for fun on occasion too. I currently don't rely on photography for my primary source of income but it is a huge passion of mine since about 2004 and I've shot with several brands. I've been dying to get into digital medium format for some time now and I've had some experience with the XT1 when that came out and love the photos that came about from it. I would describe my style of shooting with portraits, lifestyle, landscape, automotive "sports cars" for example and some street. I do shoot some sports here and there with my Canon and currently living in Oahu I shoot in the water with my housing some surf and body boarding and waves although I'm only going to be living here for about 2 more years. I don't shoot weddings and don't really do any video work "even though I want to" I just don't have the time to put projects together currently with my work load. For someone such as myself possibly looking to switch to this system completely from Canon to experience a different type of photography what would you suggest. I love the design on this camera and would simple want it for the photo quality and pure resolution. I think if I sold my canon glass, the body and my housing I could pretty much break even with the GFXr body and one lens with a little out of pocket cash. My biggest question though is with only one camera such as the GFXr, would I miss the capability of shooting with such camera as a DSLR and that fast pace action shooting and tracking or could I live with just shooting different things. It seems like a toss up and I wish and maybe I can wait till the spring, but be able to keep the Cannon and look into this system as sort of an extra.
Hi Joshua - don't expect DSLR performance with the GFX. It's just not there (yet). My suggestion is rent one first - see how you get on. If you want to dip your toes in the Fujifilm world and want blistering performance, then the X-T3 would be my tool of choice.
Thanks for this . I would love the 50r but couldn’t justify it. I’m not a pro Fuji user more an enthusiast who get paid for some stock and other stuff Got the xt2 & xt20 and that’s a big enough file size for me to work with Great review
I bought an XE3 as a cheaper alternative to an XE2 as a travel camera. To be honest after using for 6 months i think for travel its a better camera. Best travel camera ever made, light, fast and looks great too.
Wow. Your shots feel so rich and natural.
Thank you!

OMG! The camera of my dreams. Thank you so much for this ”soft launch” Kevin. This is going to be my first pre-order ever. Fuji!!
Finally ! A photographer that shoot awesome pictures. Most reviewers sucks at photography. Your pictures are amazing !
Thank you. That’s very kind.
Thank you Kevin! Your insight greatly appreciated! Loved all the presented images and your opinion just nice to hear! Have a great day!

Well that's a nice comment😊

What a great review Kevin amazing photos as always ,Just love your work. You just make people want to go out and shoot , looking forward to your next review . many thanks gman.
I'm still using my xt1 and find it.quick, think I will be blown away when I get the xt3 :0
Crop of your son was unreal!
OH WOW @ 25:31 min. Such a high contrast scene with this incredible tonality!
A very well rendered review by an excellent photographer.

Excellent review mate - as always. Completely agree with the connection with the XPro-2.
Thanks, David. Hope you are well mate.
Thank you so much Kevin for your review, I am following your same path for the exact same reasons for purchasing the GFX R.
I have swiched away from Fuji, but I'm still keep watching Your video as I get inspiration from Your images U share.
Thank's!
That was a very good review with an eye to how it will be used, not just the headline specs. Good stuff.

Than you for a wonderful review sir. It was so exciting to see this camera. Fujifilm is really doing great things. Very curious about the price.
I think it's £3,999.
I need to start saving big time.

Wow, Kevin, terrific introduction to this camera! I am not a pro and don’t need one, but I want one,
For when I can shoot a pic half as good as you!!
Excellent, thank you. Getting it. I think it’s going to get along with my D850 swimmingly.
This camera and a D850 together would be heaven. What COULDN'T you do with that combo. What a world.
Hi and congratulations for your videos and commitment from the 20000 subscriber.👍

Being able to adapt your full frame or 35mm film lenses could be the difference between selling your camera gear or keeping it
Reminds me of my Fujipro 6X9. Very excited!
I love the way you capture children!
Subscribed ! Awesome review . Very detailed .... and the last photo slide is breathtaking... simply stunning .... what music piece did you used ? May i ask ?
Thanks. I'm not sure of the name of the track right now but it's from Epidemic Sound.
Nice review Kevin 👍
Sure is a great camera. Tom Heaton called it the "perfect landscape camera". Love the review, it's all about handling the camera, getting used to it and finding out how it works. It's very clear this just works... Shot with the woman on the steps is amazing!
That image quality is out of this world......
First baby!!! Not that it matters, love your videos kev
What I would like is a camera version that's without a tilt screen or any video options, but cheaper.
Thanks for the insight, Kevin.
Take care
Vincenzo
Kevin great video! I would like a video about printing... How do you print? Thanks!
I actually don't print. All my prints are done by my lab: Digitalab in Newcastle.
Finally good photographer on RUclips !)
That's very kind. Thank you.
Good down to earth review here, I saw that the 50R will not include Eterna film simulation, which I like a lot on my X-H1. One question: what was the lens in the second bw image in the last series at 25:05 (man with straw hat)? The 63 or longer? Thanks...
Interesting review, thanks for sharing! :-)
Great review! I ENJOYED IT. I Wonder how the 50mm compares to the 45m
Thanks for this Kevin, what a well kept secret, it looks great. Enjoy Köln.
Beautiful images Kevin.
Wonderful and insightful video Kevin thanks! Now time to work some overtime :) lol
lol. Yea, me too :-)
I love love love those photos of the kids in your car..! amazing angles and amazing colors., skin tones, how did you find the autofocus apparatus of the 50R?
The AF on the 50R is reasonably good considering the sensor. I'd say it's on a par with something like the X-T2.
Please compare the 45mm / 50mm / 63mm lenses.
hehe, just got to 12:00 ...Personally, I think tilt suits the rangefinder form-factor better ;)
Thanks, Good review and photo samples, I'm curious. is it comfortable to use manual focus on this camera
Seems fine to me.
Thanks for your review. I do a mix of studio work and motorsports, so my 1Dx has been a great workhorse. I've been waiting for Canon to come out with something grand and they haven't, but it seems Fuji keeps pushing forward. Now with C1 support, it might be the time I make the switch!
Did you?
Hi Kevin, how suprising to see you as one of the beta tester for this camera!😉😁 Lovely shots as always! Enjoy Photokina!
Really like the look of the b&w (Acros?) shots.
Thanks for this . I would love the 50r but couldn’t justify it. I’m not a pro Fuji user more an enthusiast who get paid for some stock and other stuff
Got the xt2 & xt20 and that’s a big enough file size for me to work with
Great review
Hi Kevin, great honest review as always. I`m curious about the background music you use for the stills at the end. Can you post a link ?
I can't recall the track name right now, but it's from Epidemic Sound.
I bought an XE3 as a cheaper alternative to an XE2 as a travel camera. To be honest after using for 6 months i think for travel its a better camera. Best travel camera ever made, light, fast and looks great too.
Yup, I love my X-T3.
Love the pictures of your kids! I have a question -- are they candid photos or do you sometimes pose them?
great review, makes me want on too!
The skin tones look fantastic
Yes, they are fab.
i like how you beat up to hell all of your X-cameras with many scratches. The GFX-R is coming to that look as well :)
Amazing pictures and camera
Nice review. I was wondering: have you had the chance to test the grip of the 50r with a longer lens, such as the 110f2 or the zoom? Thanks!
