@@picklefart yeah. I had a built SVO 2 years ago. It tried to kill me so I sold it. Told the guy who bought it not to drive it in the rain he did anyway and wrecked it two days later. 450whp. It was nuts.
I'm super impressed with Hoonigan. I've been watching for years and years, idk at least 7-8, and you guys keep switching and evolving and making similar but always better content. I will always miss the OG DT episodes, but I am super looking forward to all of this stuff!! Also Gary looks like he lost some weight, looking good king!!

My Dad had a Sierra Cosworth RS500, it was rapid for '91, got stolen and used in an armed robbery and burnt to a crisp, would be awesome to see that Merkur running!

The Ford Sierra at 5:04 is frenchman Christian Rigolet. He used the car for exhebition runs before stages, with the turbo restrictor removed. Quite awesome to watch that thing driven hard!

IM SO STOKED FOR THAT CHEVY OBS!! I am an OBS nerd lol my grandfather ordered an OBS GMC Yukon 2 door all black, and had them send it to us with the diesel motor in it! I own a white crew cab long bed OBS 3500 Chevy pickup.
I haven't hit play yet. Man, this car. For those who aren't 80s kids, this car was something special. Most American kids probably hadn't heard of it, but most had seen it. It was that Hot Wheels, Micro Machine, etc, that looked so cool, and looked "Kinda like the Cosworths". EDIT: See! I just found out it's a Sierra, lol, I'm 45!

Yes, it's a Sierra. But the Brits had the better Cosworth DOHC 2.0L where we got the Lima due to California Emissions.

My second - but FIRST car I cared about was an '88 XR4Ti ... SO glad to see this come to life!
I've owned 4 of these cars, and they're pretty easy to work on once you get past their inherent "weirdness" and quirks. The engine is easy to get parts for except cylinder heads, and parts are cheap compared to the stuff you are used to. The heads do bridge crack and no, the Ranger one won't work. Twin plug heads don't flow. It has to be a D-port turbo head. Porting the intake manifolds and head are good ways to make power, but the bottom end tends to not like RPM, so don't expect to go past 6500 under the best conditions. The engine is cast iron head and block, with forged pistons, rods and crank. I've changed a head gasket in one of these in two hours with hand tools. They are non-interference timing belts, and there are some parts out there like the Fel-Pro 1035 head gasket that can handle more boost. Do yourself a favor and change the rubber driveshaft coupler ASAP before it grenades the transmission extension housing by going out of balance. Or T-5 swap it, but you will have a notchy shifter that way. Cams can be used from the Ranger, but there are some aftermarket cams still available. Also, you will eat plug wires. Get ceramic ones.
If you haven't noticed, I miss having one of these cars. They are a TON of fun.

This one hits home.. my dad gave me his old 86 merkur for my first car in in 06. The turbo lag was insane but it sounded great.. no intercooler and the headgasket was cooked so it was always running hot. Mine was red too. I really loved the rally history this platform has overseas. I definitely want to own one again down the road, maybe put a modern Ford turbo 2.3 in it. Cheers

I want one from a Mustang with a 6spd manual gear box.
Put a cosworth 2.0 Turbo in it and a T5 trans. The T9 that came in it was horrible and far too easy to get in reverse like he said. I don't know how many times at a light I would get reverse instead of first.

I love the little murker XR4Ti. It seems like a blast! The little 2.3 is a legend in the midget racing scene and can hit 500 HP naturally aspirated. I'd be genuinely interested to see what it's capable of with modern turbocharging and tuning technology.
Bo-Port has made just under 1,000 horsepower with the 2.3 Lima. They have videos on RUclips showing quarter mile runs. I can’t recall if they have dyno vids.

I'm so excited to see you working on the Merkur. I have a 84 Mustang SVO which has the same long block. Anyway get yourselves in touch with Stinger Performance and maybe Eslinger too and you can turn that thing up to 11.
It's also a good idea to relocate the ignition module because they like to die and leave you stranded. Either that or keep a spare in the glove box with a 5.5mm thin wall socket.

as a second gen xr4ti owner i loved this episode..... and its just a turbo tractor motor with forged pistons, great feeling cars once you get the mods in them too!
Been waiting for this ever since the Gymkhana when you bought it. I had one EXACTLY like that in 1994-1997 when I traded it in for a new F150 to be "responsible" for my ex wife. Loved that little car. Drove the absolute shit out of it. Replaced the turbo twice, the rear diff twice, and found out that a lot of the interior parts would swap with Escort parts (turn signal switch, ignition switch, a/c controls, heater core, etc). Loved that car.
I wonder how long this will last this time around.
Too many series and projects. Seems hard to juggle it all.

Glad your doing something with the mercur, im from uk and had a sierra xr4i back in the day its basically same 3 door split wondow shell but with a 2.8 n/a v6, had plans for a cosworth replica but put it through a hedge backwards before i got a chance, good times👌

I talked to Gary once over the phone many years ago, I cant remember why but he was calling all the customers who bought the never pull out stickers from him I believe, I ended up buying 1 or 2 stickers, anyways,, I used to watch you guys everyday at least 5 years ago now, after Kens passing recently, it killed me inside, it was unbelievable to me the man of Gymkhana was gone so soon, with that being said its also what brought me back to watching you guys now, and bringing back garage garage is one of the best ideas you guys have had since its original creation, I will meet all of you one day, and hopefully I have a dope ass car when I do. I really wanted the opportunity of driving with or beside Ken Block one day, that dream will never come true now, but maybe its time I make a few others come true on my own. Have a great day to the whole crew, hope you guys are doing awesome.

He's working on his own stuff but also crewing for Vaughn Gittin Jr and the RTR crew.
My friend in high school had one of these, a black 5-speed one, I remember it being pretty genuinely quick and a comfortable, good-handling, fun little car.
I used to have an 86&87 XR4TI. My biggest issue was changing a freeze plug and replacing the gasket on the sunroof. Motors were in ok shape so I only had to do fluid changes and replace all the gaskets. The T3 turbo made them fun to drive. Yes I'm a girl but love mechanical repairs.
The T3 gave the XR potential to make more power than its stable mates, the SVO Mustang and Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, as they both used smaller
IHI turbochargers.
The lack of an intercooler, use of a smaller vane air flow meter, and the use of a less capable computer severely limited the XR4 from making the power that T3 could ultimately produce. Change those few parts on an XR4Ti and it changes the car dramatically.
Ford left a ton on the table with these cars to keep them under the top two flag ship models of the era for sure.

Heck yeah!!!!!!!! Ford 2.3 turbo!!! There's tons of aftermarket support for that motor. Boport sales built heads ready to install! There's LSD options . Very cool .. I'd love to see you guys build the xr4ti and rx7.

I bought an 88 xr4ti back in 2002 for 300 bucks. Perfect condition just needed a tune up. Thing was a blast.
My uncle had 1 if these when I was growing up! It was actually pretty quick, after the major turbo lag. Good times ripping it in the old Merkur.

Been playing a lot of dirt rally 2.0 again lately. Group A is my favorite class in the game, specifically the Evo VI. Group B requires a little too much concentration
My dad had a Ford Sierra when I was a kid. It was one of the first mainstream cars with central locking, and although the locking motors made more noise than Monster Jam, he still walked around the car to check if it really locked.

My old man had a Sierra Sapphire GLS, still think I can smell the stale smoke and faint whiff of dog shit that never quite went away after the dog had a right bad time on the back seats. Loved that car.

When you guys announced Gymkhana Grid coming back, I immediately started looking through adds and an XR4Ti was one of the cars on my list to try and find. Love that you guys have one to build!
I used to race my heavy cammed 83 Mustang 2.3l against these Sierra's back in the 80s when I lived in Berlin. Great fun!
I had a few of these cars back in college. First mod = 3” exhaust and open air filter. Had a lot of fun pissing off the neighbors. That 2.3 is a tough little motor and will take a lot of boost
I think it already has exhaust from Rapido Group on it. It has a dual outlet, they were single shot stock so he gets to take a short cut.
Next mods I would do are a Mustan SVO PF3 ECU and an SVO or Turbo Coupe Big VAM, and an intercooler. Up boost to 18psi, and proceed to be astonished at how quick it can become for being such old technology lol.

My Friend had this as a beater car in HS. Xr4Ti was surprisingly fast and had a bunch of bells and whistles for back in the day
