    Over here in the UK it was known as the Ford Sierra XR4i and came with a 2.8 Fuel injected V6 engine and rear wheel drive. It later became a 2.9 in the Sierra Sapphire XR 4 x 4, which was also 4 wheel drive. No turbo on either model. The Sapphire was the 4 door saloon version of the Sierra. The massive boot spoiler was also deleted on the Sapphire XR 4 x 4. Ironically enough the 3 door body shell l was initially only offered in the very basic 1.3 version of the Sierra. I used to drive both models when I was a Police Traffic Officer in the ‘80s. They also became amongst the most stolen cars in the UK as well.

    Love these cars. It was my first car at 16 back in 1994. It was an 86, and I paid 2500 for it with 50k miles. Looking back, they had depreciated like crazy. I went and bought it with my grandpa, he co-signed and I put the down payment. Brought it home and my parents flipped. They hated that car from day 1. I absolutely loved it. I went from a nobody to a somebody in school, simply because of the kick ass car I drove. Every kid in school was so jealous. They were ridiculously quick for their day too, and the handling was amazing. Man that takes me back.

    • @ltu42
      @ltu42 Год назад +1

      It's really puzzling how with this dirt simple suspension the handling is amazing. The rollbar serves as a half of the front wishbone, and in the end there are semi-trailing arms on a tubular subframe. It can't be simpler, but it works. I've used a trashed Ford Sierra as a donor for a sevenesque Haynes Roadster. These sights bring me warm fuzzy feelings, it's the first car that I've taken apart.

    I had a Mare koor XR4Ti a couple years ago. If Sir Jackie Stewart calls it a Mare koor it's a mare koor! I took the car to the mechanic that worked on Rick Byrnes Salt Flats XR4Ti. It had been so long the mechanic couldn't remember how to tune the engine. I tried a couple other shops, that worked on classics. They never heard of the car. I said it has the same engine as SVO Mustang (ok no intercooler), Thunderbrid Turbo Coupe, and same block as Ranger. Got a blank stare. Couldn't find anyone to tune it! Sold it to a teenager, he was able to get it running correctly.

    It's quite rare to find a non sunroof, leather heated seats xr4ti. That one has a lot of parts from a catalog that used to specialize in merkur parts, called Rapido. You can see the rapido logo on the speedometer which was a conversion piece to get rid of the 85mph speedometer. The steering wheel was offered by them, also the rims and the borla dual exhaust. They also sold cosworth front grilles like that with the merkur logo rather than the Ford badge, as well as the glass lensed headlights, as US cars had plastic lenses. The Wizard mentioned that this same customer recently had another Merkur, a Scorpio, in for service. I worked for a subsidiary of Ford for around 20 years in a field rep capacity, and as a part of the job we were given a Ford car for our field travels. One year I was given a Scorpio as my company car. Not many people went out of their way to praise this car, but I am one of them. Over a period of time we were given everything from Escorts to Lincoln Continentals and Mark VIII's. The first year that the Taurus SHO was available, I had one of them. Yamaha V6 and manual trans. Out of all the cars I drove over this 20 year (+/-) time, I enjoyed driving the Scorpio more than any other car I ever was provided with. On the road, it just ate up the miles like it was eating lunch. It had a 2.6 liter V6 and 4-spd auto transmission., leather interior and all the bells and whistles. Got very good mileage, caused no problems, rode like a dream. That I could see, its only problem was it was given an MSRP that was a little higher than its Bimmer and Mercedes competition. I had a chance to buy the car when I turned it back in, and I tried to find a way to keep it, but just couldn't make the numbers come out in my favor. As I say, it was my most favorite car, and this is even comparing it to the 1st generation Taurus SHO and 1st year Lincoln Mark VIII that I also drove.

    For those who ask why it wasn’t sold as a Ford Scorpio:
    1. Ford had to sell these at a premium price in the US, to make up for the expense of importing and Federalization, and exchange rates at the time made European goods fairly expensive. So they decided to sell it under a separate marque through their Lincoln-Mercury dealer channel and made the unfortunate choice of the German word for Mercury (“Merkur”).
    2. Using Sierra as a model name was seen as problematic, because GM was using it at GMC and at Olds with the similar-sounding Ciera.

    • @11sfr
      @11sfr 2 года назад +2

      Ford desperately wanted an import luxury brand to compete more effectively with Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, since Baby Boomers were defecting from Lincoln at a massive rate and the World War II and Korea veterans weren't going to keep buying Town Cars and Continentals forever (but, in the meantime, were still buying quite a lot of them, to the extent that Ford didn't want to totally alienate them by taking the Lincoln brand in a totally different direction, they preferred to get a new name for a fresh start). Initially, Ford actually did try to buy BMW in the mid 1980s, but were blocked by the Quandt family, and then decided to just create their own "fake" German brand by just selling upscale West German-built Fords under the Merkur name. When Merkur didn't really pan out, they tried to buy Rover, but were blocked, since Margaret Thatcher's government was under a lot of pressure to keep the company under British ownership during privatization, so, eventually, Ford just bought Jaguar in 1989, finally giving them the real "import" brand they always wanted.

    The intercooler setup is from Rapido. This came with a different ford computer module from mustang SVO. The ford computers were not reprogramable. The exhaust was also from rapido, a borla.
    The Borla twin exhaust really let the turbo spool up much faster the. With the computer replacement and intercooler I put out significantly more power than the stock
    Rapido sold a T5 transmission modification kick, this car might have the T9 installed but in the day Rapido sold the T5.
    As someone else said the the front grill was sold by Rapido so the car would have the grip of the European Ford Sierra Cosworth. The stock twin wing, on the first couple XRTi model years was similar but upper wing was much smaller than the Sierra RS500 Cosworth.
    Rapid also sold the hood vents used on the Sierra Cosworth.
    The Merkur was a repowered Ford Sierra two door, in Europe the car also came in a 4 door and was the standard form midsize.

The XR4Ti did not come from the factory with an intercooler, so that intercooler is an aftermarket unit (Forge Motorsports?). Also, the wheels are aftermarket as well. Wow thats a very clean Merkur, I had a 85 red one almost exactly like that one. Super fun and cool cars. Couple quick history notes, Wizard was right it kinda looks like a Escort, because it is a Euro escort! The famous version of that was the Escort Cosworth that rocked Group B rally in the 80s with a amazing Cosworth 2.0 Turbo engine. Cool thing about the 2.3 Turbo in there, they actually put it in the 85 Mustang SVO but stopped because it was faster than the V8 of the time. Also thats not a Stock intercooler setup, its probally off the Turbocoupe. His Headlights and grill isnt stock either, but they look really good. I think you need to give the owner of that car a gold star for keeping it so nice and making good and classy choices with mods. That's a Ford Sierra! The escort was the XR3i and the Sierra the XR4i. I Guess the Ti was the turbo. The front is just a bit diferent, but the back is the same, down to the dual wings, that the escort also had. It was also a good rally car :)

    Always loved these because they are so odd. But somehow so cool. Maybe because it says, I know I am not a normal looking car and I am proud of that. Add in the IRS (rare back then, especially for a ford) and these are very desirable in my book.

    When the car was introduced here in the U.S. back in the day, I believe that either the writers at Car and Driver or Motor Trend said it is pronounced Mare-KOOR. Some people may think it somewhat cool today, but even with predicted sales volumes of about 15K per year (as I remember), it turned out to be a sales flop with volumes below even that. I personally thought it was a pretty interesting car.

    Let's just say Ford Sierra, easier to say 😄
    Sierra had quite a model range, you can have Sierras even with 1,3 engine up to Cosworth models and diesels too.
    And even pick up version p100 😄

    That’s cool he brought you some Michigan made snacks. Michigan is my home state and one of my good friends here in WV loves to try new snacks so I had bring her some Better Made chips, some Vernors, Meijer cheesy popcorn, and some Jones soda. I was hoping to find some fudge but we didn’t see any at the Meijer we stopped at. Great looking car. I’ve always loved these. Used to see them around a lot in the 90’s but it’s been a while now.

    Hello Wizard.. Thanks so much for posting a video of my very first car I bought as a 16 yrs old kid. This car was my first modified car it as I returned it back to a Cosworth RS500. I love this car and will always love this car. Thanks again Wizard.. 🙂 PS. That is the best condition Merkur I have seen in some time and one more thing. That is an aftermarket Inter-cooler as this car never had one installed at the factory.

    I've always had a weird fascination with that car. Ford's funny they spend the money developing rear independent rear suspension but then put drum brakes on it.. weird.

    • @tl1024
      @tl1024 2 года назад

      I wonder if the rear IRS axle is similar to the independent rear suspension used on V6 Thunderbirds starting in the late 80s (would have a 7.5" ring gear)?

      There's a new ford jeep style in the uk and they still use drums on the rear of them lol. None of the sport car line has. When someone is spending 30 to 40 grand on a new car and it still has rear drum brakes. It's one of the only cars sold with them.

    • @jeffgriffith7003
      @jeffgriffith7003 2 года назад +1

      Drum brakes really aren’t all that bad, they tend to be lighter in weight and have excellent gripping power contrary to popular belief. The main issue with drum brakes is their poor heat dissipation characteristics and visual looks.

    I restored an 86 with no sunroof. Complete restoration. 2.3 turbo, 5spd. Did some upgrades in the engine (roller rockers, turbo etc). Started moving toward converting it to a sierra but ended up selling it. The double firewall was the worst design on the planet for the heater core. I also removed the hideous plastic cladding. Sierra Headlights was a big conversion/improvement on this one.
    Ugggg Mack-in-ack… Mack-in-aww

      It's not a mercury, though Merkur (pronounce Mare coor, car wizard and his guy with five are wrong, and I know because I own two) is German for mercury, it's a sperate brand, though it was sold by mercury dealerships which is why it failed. Mercury dealers didn't know anything about sports cars so they ordered most of them in auto. The 3 speed auto trans was trash and made of glass so the autos had like 40 less hp in order not to break it which took them from being M3 fighters to being slower than a 318i.
