Meh potatoes to potato it is not as the 14 is an air superiority fighter and the 18 is multirole so air to air my money is in the tomcat, not to mention the 18 has a very short flight time compared to the 14and i don't doubt they could have adapted a new version of the 14 to match the 18 at capabilities, the super hornet is a different story i would argue it is a better aircraft than both overall
@PeterParker-cd3pz yeah they look better than C's but they're underpowered imo so I don't like them. I think the f15 looks better too. But if the super hornet fulfills the role adequately, then that's what matters
@@bicboi1930 The f18 e and f are not underpowered in thrust to weight ratio they just don't have a very high top speed like the f15. They are also much better than the f15 in ground strike operations and have similar BVR capabilities as the f15 but are better dogfighters. Imo, both are amazing aircraft that answer different roles.
I hadn’t realized before this just how attractive an aircraft the Hornet is. Usually, I like a little more junk in the trunk (the A-10 has been my favorite since childhood) but that jet looks like the pinnacle of form meeting function.
Reminds me a story by an Israeli F-4 pilot, describing losing practice dogfights to the newly arrived F-15: "We start the fight on his 6. He's in a total disadvantage. Suddenly I see these huge vertical stabilizers turn- it disappears and in a couple of seconds he's on our 6. The king is dead- long live the new king."
One reason they kept improving the design of the F-15 and wanting a large wing area and high thrust to weight ratio is when they saw the MiG-25, they assumed from photos that the large wing area and large engines made it a formidable, highly manoeuvrable fighter, the top speed also concerned them. In reality though once they got their hands on one from a pilot who defected they found out that the large wing area was to provide enough lift, because it was almost completely made of steel and very heavy. Still very fast, but a pure interceptor and not a dogfighter, and at the very fastest speeds recorded they theorised that the jets would need total engine replacement. Not getting complacent though and making the F-15 the best jet it could be paid off in the long run though.
Years usually. Really good pilots usually have years and hundreds if not thousands of hours of experience across differnet sims. Experience can cross between different ones.
@@AlaricKerenskyI started I. War thunder picked up Microsoft flight sim then finally dcs world once you understand how to manage and conserve your energy it becomes easier across all platforms to preform better maneuvers
I started flight simulation firstly on mobile with Gunship III, then onto MSFS and XPlane focusing on the civilian side primarily helicopters and airliners. For combat, I go to VTOL VR to learn/practice dogfighting and ground attacks, but once I upgrade my computer/Equipment, I am going straight to DCS!
It really depends on your prior knowledge of both flying in general and fighters. I only started playing dcs after i already got my pilot's license, so i got decently good pretty fast. For me the only thing that took a long time was operating the flight systems, this took me hours and hours. However, if you've never flown simulator or IRL, you might struggle more with the basics. Regardlesss of starting point though, i believe anyone can become quite good at one plane if you learn it for 50-100 hours ingame. Just note that you'll have to spend hours additionally for each plane as the systems are different.
Just remember, it's the pilot, and not the airframe. You've got to fight your airplane's type or fight and not get sucked into the other airframe's best fight. The Eagle is a great airplane but the guys flying her are why they are 104-0.

With the update I got the Flaming Cliffs 3 pack with the F-86 Saber and the MiG-15. Both are really good dogfighters and can turn very tight. Been having a blast fighting the usual suspects like the Viper, Hornet and Eagle. I still lose because I suck in general, but I can very well see a skilled pilot giving all the modern jets a good fight
Highly suspicious, at the end the hornet stops turning and goes straight allowing for a gun kill when he could have kep the turn up and gotten guns on as well.
The hornet ran out of kinetic energy. You can turn hard in hornet, and the FBW will keep you stable, but you will lose all the speed very fast, and at around 120 knots you hit a wall and the nose just stops moving. The control surfaces just don't have enough airflow to keep the high AOA at that slow speed. After that point, the direction of flight is still changing, but the nose doesn't turn anymore, sort of like a car at the end of a drift. He basically cashed in all his energy after the reverse but was just a tiny bit short. If he pulled slightly less, he may have made it.
