Why Millennials Seem To Be Aging So Slowly | Explained

- Millennials (aka people born between 1981 and 1996) seem to be aging at a slower rate than previous generations… but no one agrees on why. Some say it’s because they’re just immature, dodging responsibilities and spending too much time on nostalgia. Others blame the rise of cosmetic procedures and the increased focus on looks in our social media focused world combined with the lack of access to the old school markers of “adulthood.” So let’s take a deeper look at this perceived collective youthfulness of millennials, and how cultural shifts have changed our image of adulthood.

I’m 39. It’s about staying off social media. Reducing stress and not smoking.
I personally think it was just God looking down from on high and going, "These kids are not going to be able to afford a house, their economy keeps getting worse, they are going to be working for the rest of their lives. I better slow down their aging to give them a fighting chance."
I literally think this
I have questioned this constantly and believe it more often
I literally burst out laughing at this. thanks for the laugh. hahahaha
Amen 🙏
Thanks laugh and cried at the same time while pitbull plays in the background 😂
The answer is because millennials are still young 🙄
What about gen z looking older though 😂
@@priskruger314maybe it’s the vaping. And all the judging they do 😂
@@verydenise rofl bunch of sourpusses 😆
Maybe they just wear too much makeup? I know I used to try to look older.
@@priskruger314 a lot of the girls are getting cosmetic procedures done so young while their face is still developing or things like 'preventative botox' to pre-empt potential wrinkles or whatever. These are the kids that would have grown up nearly completely with Instagram and Snapchat filters, with 'influencer' being a viable career path, so there's a pressure to achieve the 'smartphone face' look, and they're likely not researching the good doctors and just getting procedures that make them look like 40-year-olds trying to look young. And in terms of men, there's the simple factor of beards suddenly being 'in' and young guys being absolutely obsessed with having facial hair, and it's not a requirement to be clean shaven for a lot of jobs like it used to, so that makes them look older. As well as that, the standards for what's considered fit have changed. Watch action movies from the 90s and 2000s. Even compare Hugh Jackman's physique in Van Helsing to what it's like in X-Men: Days of Future Past. In the former, he's fit but it's a healthily achievable shape. In the latter, he's clearly on a very specialised diet involving a calorie deficit and liquid deprivation to make that kind of ab definition appear, as are all the MCU actors. Young guys are growing up seeing THAT as the ideal, and trying to emulate it. Muscle mass will automatically make a guy look older anyway, but you need to deprive the body of water to get such definition, and that also ages you. Plus, they're also the ones preaching about hustle culture and 'pushing through', trying to become millionaires by the time they're 20, so sacrificing sleep and rest is going to age them as well. And there's also the state of the world where suddenly 6-day work weeks and 12 hour working days are the norm, as well as having two jobs and a side hustle just to get by, so less rest time for new people entering the workforce and increased stress.
It's easy, we know the secret fountain of youth is avacado toast and pumpkin spice lattes!
And not owning homes. Really keeps the skin tight.
And being childfree. 💁🏾♀️
🤣🤣 Avocado toast for the win!
@verda_renee I love my kids, but the worry line between my eyebrows and all my gray hairs are 100% because of them.
@@verda_renee that one might actually be accurate.

36, married for 10yr and recently had a baby. People on the street literally think I'm a teen mom.
I know you, hi! (MG from BAC in POK) CONGRATS!!!!
Haha I’m 31 and pregnant with my first child and people stare at me like I’m a teen mum.
Yeah, I don't think that's why they're staring. I'm a 29 years old and I don't look 30 yet, but I definitely look different from when I was an actual teen.
I am old enough to have a 4-year-old grandchild and whenever a recruiter sees me, they assume I finished school not too long ago. I aged badly because I work outdoors and have huge Asian cheekbones and cheeks by nature with a protruding mouth area...I don't get why people in the West get surgery to achieve that look as it's been what people like me try to erase.
It's because they aren't baking in the sun with baby oil like I did in the early 80's. Plus they don't smoke cigarettes.
Yea, dermatology has come a long way since the 70s/early 80s. And D.A.R.E was in all our schools in the 90s lol
No sun, no cigs, no kids? Babyface express. Gen Z will look even younger longer.
@@aawillmaI don’t know. A ton of my gen z students have started vaping. I think lots of them are going to age rather rapidly
@@aawillmaexcept Gen z is aging faster than millennials at the same age do to a return to tobacco (vapping), anti “diet culture” nonsense which encourages poor eating habits and a more sentient lifestyle that revolves around sitting on social media all day. That plus the increased use of fillers, aging plastic surgery (buckle fat removal, face lifts, etc) and over all cosmetic procedures that make the user look older.
Plenty of millennials were around in the eighties 😂 but our parents did take better care of us.
Millennial here 🙋🏻♀️ I’m just gonna say it, I’m aging so well because no one’s dusty ass son is stressing me out! We’re also appreciating being single and normalizing solo dates when back then we were supposed to get married, have kids, have a house, a car for each of us all at 30! Especially now with the clusterfuck of dating, people are just enjoying their own company now and don’t care about the societal pressure of relationships.
Solo dated myself today! Gorgeous time
The way I cackled 🤣🤣🤣🤣
How dare society want me to own a car and a house and a family?! Disgusting!! Filth!
What about my human rights of being single, date myself, marry myself and kill my own babies?! I have the right to be alone with my cats and my Taylor Swift albums!!

A fashionable way to say you don’t have friends because you can’t get along with anyone and men just don’t wanna put up with your feminist bs
Pretty sure being single is causing me to reverse aging. Thankfully, I don't have to deal with boys like Kant here anymore.
29yr old millennials here. I would also like to point out that for the most part, most of us are also still on the young end of the age bracket, so we should still look it right?
Yeah, I can pass for a couple years older and I’m the same age.
Exactly. We don't look old because we aren't old
Okay but I'm 32 and after moving, a new neighbor asked what my parents did for work. And then was shocked to learn I was not a high school/college student. Lol
40 year old Millennial here and still looking fly 😂😂
36 and there are people who still ask me if I've graduated college yet
37 year old here. I want to add being childfree, either by choice or circumstances. Looking at friends with and without kids and there is a WORLD of difference physically. More and more people are childfree and I can't help but think this helps us remain youthful longer. We can sleep lol.
Yep. Life hasn’t been sucked outta me.
I look younger at 44 than my other Xiennial/millennial friends who had kids. Even the ones younger than me.
So true! All that freedom, sleep and less stress. Fountain of youth.
It’s not just about the sleep. For women, it’s about not going through the horrific bodily trauma of birth.
@@nataliaalfonso2662 and the general STRESS 😩 I'm stressed out enough!
It’s probably the trauma but I FEEL 23 still…
I’m 33
I think a big part of us (millennials) feeling this way is we were conditioned to think adulthood = having a car, owning a big house, and having a big family and being married. Much of older Gen X'ers/Boomers could easily afford all that in their early-to-mid 20s---but since things are more expensive now, milennials can barely even afford tuition, and many of us still live with our parents (which there's no shame in). That classic ideal of "adulthood" seems unattainable for a lot of us, so we feel perpetually like teenagers, like we haven't "made it" yet.
@@natesamadhi33 As a gen Z its kinda the same for us too.
@@HishamA.N_Comicbroe I know, I was just speaking for us millennials specifically since OP mentioned she was in her 30s.
@@natesamadhi33 No ofc. I got what you meant.
omg yesss!! i was treated horribly by my family and was never allowed to be a child. So i feel that i am an eternal child now.
I've been regularly exfoliating, moisturising and drinking water since my teen years. I don't smoke, rarely drink, remove all makeup before bed (and to that point, I find myself wearing makeup even less nowadays), don't frown either, and people assume I'm 25 (I'm turning 38 this year).
That's awesome! I'm the same age as you, and also assumed to be in my mid 20s. I'm also more sporty/active and have more energy than my gen z coworkers. My only 'issue' these days is sometimes finding a couple of premature gray hairs (which I think is less of an issue than wrinkles would be).
I did the same thing also, and people were surprised to know I wasn't in my 20s when I was in my 30s. However, once you hit 40, and especially when you hit 50 (menopause era), you will age regardless of how much self care you did. I'm 57, and healthy, and thats what really counts (not looking younger)
those teen magazines really taught us right! :)
I feel genetics also plays into it. And being childfree and unmarried maybe?? Hahaha, I didn't do those things well, I was lazy about self care but I never smoked and hardly drink as well and I am 37 and same. I hear the shock whenever I meet new people. But I think like one of the comments said, once we hit 40, I don't think it matters the accelerated aging process will catch up to us unfortunately.
That's not it at all. I was an alcoholic from 28 to 31. I smoke cigarettes from 15 to 30. I'm 32 now. And I partied my hat off in college. I really treated my body bad. But for some reason I look hella young LOL. Like I'm one of the youngest looking millennials. Anybody that ever comes up to me and asks me how old I am, it's always shocked when I tell them 32.
I am 39 years old and I think it's caused by:
- The way we dress, much more casual dressing than previous generations. Also hairstyle and tatoos.
- Health care and gym. Nowdays people exercise more. Less smoke and less alcohol. Better diet.
- Hobbies. We do the same things our parents did (have children, pay rent/mortage, go to work) but keep most of our hobbies from younger years (play videogames, read comic-books, etc) while previous generations dropped them as weren't fit for adult life.
- Internet makes easy for us to catch (or at least know about) new trends in the younger generations and relate to them
On the flip side a ton of people are alot fatter than in previous generations. I think we have more extremes on both ends these days 😂
@@blondie9422 i blame the fast work culture for that along with companies becoming greedy and cutting cost from quality ingredients. Ofc the other option being the person choice.
but what about gen Z looking much older
This is the best analysis I've read
@@NathaliLima1 Gen Z are way bigger than us when we were teens and the generation before us. xs or xxs was normal for younger adults growing up and the generation before me was even smaller. Now everyone is bigger but many Gen Z already look like mothers of 5 at the tender age of 23 with very saggy faces.
"Finally aging into my personality" is so real
I overheard my boss refer to me as being in my 20s. I'm 35 and actively greying 😂
I also feel like Gen Z looks older for their age and so that makes us look even younger lol.
47 year old Gen Xer who could still pass for 30........apart from all the gray hair.😥
@@nate2759they do I think it’s because they consume more cannabis than we did and the excessive vaping
Yeah its crazy
We have more care for our health. Also, we don't smoke, we use sunscreen, we drink water, and most of us either never did drugs or quit them before they started doing permanent damage.
That's not it at all! I'm 32 and I always get told that I look around 20ish. I don't have a skin care routine, i've smoked cigarettes since I was 15 years old, I quit at 31 years old. I was an alcoholic from 28 to 31. I've smoke weed every single day since I was 15. I literally partied my head off in college for 4 years. And I ate nothing but fast food up until 32. I mean I was the epitome of unhealthy, but everybody still says I look at Max 23 years old LOL
@@NeighborhoodWatchMannYou sound like more an outlier though. Most people wouldn’t be able to do that and still look young/fresh. Good on you though 👍🏻❤️
For myself personally I can answer that:
1. Dont drink or smoke
2. Very cautious with my health / what I eat
3. Can do hard labor but dont kill myself over it
4. Clothing / interests. Im 29 and I watch a lot of animation & like action figures & Pokemon. So that makes people clock me as younger than I am.
Gen Z can't, "Do hard labor, but don't kill myself over it." Where have you guys been the last 20 years? Back in my day it was work until you die. What the hell happened? Gen Z is stressed out too esrly because Boomers and Milleniakd refuse to work. You all choose not to work but Gen Z never had a choice. People watch our work like Circus Monkeys because no one will ever believe our work.
You are 29. You ARE young!
TBF, the pandemic literally stole years of people’s lives, which means everyone acts a little younger due to missing out on the experiences we would have had during that time. Sure it’s not a ton but it is a noticeable difference
I especially notice this with teens/high schoolers. Particularly those who missed out on middle school during shut downs. They seems more like middle schoolers to me (someone who was in high school 20 years ago), like there is some arrested development going on. That’s not a criticism, just an observation.
I'd argue the pandemic aged people faster. Many folks underwent life changing experiences during that period. The pandemic altered the course of many lives, some for the better
I think Gen Z suffered the most and maybe were forced to age faster as the stress of multiple very long lockdowns during the most important years of their life, they weren't allowed to socialise or go to school unless it was online. So depressing 😢 unfair, a lot of stress at that age and lack of socialising.
I just want to add that millennials I knew during the lockdowns were happier as they could slow down their pace of life, work from home, or not work but still get paid. Yes we hated not being able to do normal things we don't want it again, but it was a chance to have a break, many of us had babies and spent time with our family during lockdown. It's just not the same for gen z though, who really needed to be out, be educated and socialise.
More so for gen z, not really applicable to millennials.
I’m 33 and my 23 year old co-worker thought I was 25. Told me I was aging like a fine wine lol. I don’t have a skincare routine either... I think a huge factor is we are having children at older ages or not at all. Children age you dramatically.
It’s very normal to still look very young at 33, chill 😅😑
Agree. Im 31 and I have a colleague thats is 33 but has 2 kids. She looks 10 years older than me and people think Im in my early 20s
Children should MATURE you, rather than age you, though there is some science to them aging you, when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. I’m in my early 30’s and have 2 kids, and people regularly think I’m a teenager. Aging, like most other things, isn’t a monolithic experience.
@@LX-kt90rxyou probably look older than someone with similar physical characteristics with you that doesn’t have kids. Of course its not monolithic but its a reality, my colleague and i have similar physical traits, same height, almost same weight, same race but i look infinitely younger. There is also the aspect of maturity, im not as mature. I dont have sleepless nights or worries that she has that comes with caring and raising a child. Its not an insult to people with kids i respect parents. Its not easy to take care of a child
@@LX-kt90rx finally a good comment. I also had that experience. Children didn’t age me, sleeping too late, not feeding properly and having to deal with stress is what ages you. Having children is a blessing and makes your life more joyful and yes, you also become a wholesome mature person, a better self
Being a theatre person has definitely kept me young. I never see the sun 💀
Hahaha, I always thought it was that theater people tend to have a stereotypically youthful energy and openness (I'm a theater person), but that is also a very fair point about never seeing the sun!
My Grand parents and parents never drink water and think a salad is lettuce drenched in ranch n bacon bits.. That’s why.
I misremembered the last part as racing and bacon and was like whaaaattt
😂😂😂 I find that funny…I’m GenX, don’t do such things, but I’m aware of such behaviour.
Um, who do you think figured out that drinking lots of water and eating avocados was healthy? That started in the 1970's.
@@la4401Not in my small Indiana town lol
36 and get asked about what uni I'm at.
I wear sunscreen. Don't smoke. Almost never drink. Never had any work done. Style hasn't changed much since uni. Pretty sure this is why people keep thinking I'm 25.
I’m right there with you!
It's not that. I had a horrible party life, I did drugs, I was an alcoholic from 28 to 31. I smoke cigarettes since I was 15, I'm now 32. I've also smoked weed since I was 15, literally every single day. And I partied my ass off in college. Everybody still says I look 20ish. It's not the lifestyle, but it may be the dress. I still dress the same as I did when I went to college
My secret to be young looking as a 34 year old millennial is to be poor. Never tempted to change my hair, face, inject things, put on fake tan or lashes because I can't afford anything else apart from sunscreen. If you look the same since you were 18 people will assume you are younger.
That's funny! Maybe that's why I look so young. I don't even have tattoos.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 as a Millennial turning 40 this year!
40 Millennials Club! 🎉❤
😂😂

I'm autistic and a millennial autistics mature slowly and Millennials mature slowly I'm living in strange times I turn 33 next month and I still live with my father but I'm a few years away from moving out and I'll get a great job in less than that so I ain't too worried about it
I'm the same, but funnily, my maturing is not linnear or equal. I was an old soul, and I was helping with income for the fam since I was 15. I've got the job experience of someone who has been working for 20 years, but I'm 36. But, since I've always had to work work work, and I never had any money or time, and I lacked a certain understanding of society, I've not really had a life until I turned 29 at the earliest, and therefore, I lack the personal milestones of a middle schooler. I don't have that much serious relationship experience. I've not done a lot of the fun high school stuff. I only got into being an athlete at 25, and haven't gotten into really good conditioning until Iwas 32... So, in terms of work, I am my age, or older. In everything else, I am like if I were say, 22.
There's a difference between maturing and acting old. We matured just fine. By the way, I'm autistic as well. And yeah me too.
I’m autistic and I’m 37 and childfree. I have stable work. I am still living with relatives.
I turned 30 a week ago. I’m also mildly autistic and have Aspergers. I have noticed that as I have gotten older, a lot of people are surprised when I tell them my age. They still think I am in my early-to-mid-twenties. But nope, I just turned 30. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I drink a lot of water. I moisturize my face. I try to eat healthy as much as possible. I use essential oils. I embrace their remarks and take them as compliments.
I’m nervous about entering my 30s (especially as an Aspie), but at the same time, I have decided to keep growing and learning no matter what.
Nothing wrong with living with your family if you get along with them and you get to save money!
38 and people get shocked I'm not in my 20s. I got a comment recently that I probably wasn't alive when the Lion King came out. LOL
I don't love it. Even when I'd been doing my work for 10 years people treated me like I was new.
That's pretty much my life too😂
I get that, it’s a bit frustrating to have people around you who just assume you can’t possibly have certain life experiences because they assume you are 10-15 years younger than you really are.
38 too...I have a 14 year old and people think she's my younger sister😂. I have been into yoga and meditation since I was 17. I'm also a redhead so I have been protecting my skin my whole life. Maybe it's those things or maybe it's the fact that I refuse to conform to society. I am very unconventional when it comes to what being an adult is and I think that it's kept me young at heart❤
We have had to deal with a LOT in our childhoods and had to grow up too quickly...the LEAST we can get is to age gracefully lol.
Here here....
This here exactly!
THIS!!!
That part! Its generational experience i think, dealing with boomers was tiring, now were chilling and relieving youth.
Lol this
A lot of us are childfree singletons and DINK couples.
Those who do have kids usually have less kids than previous generations.
People get mad when I say it but I’ve noticed the more kids a couple/single-parent has the worse they age. This doesn’t necessarily apply to people who are wealthy enough for early life childcare + Nannies/Regular babysitters + hired cleaners + chefs or outsourced cooking etc and more. Having more free time to exercise to keep fit (and never getting pregnant/having less pregnancies to begin with also helps)
Absolutely agree - I'm 28 and the people I went to school with/around my age with kids, almost all of them genuinely look like they're in their late 30s at best. Having kids (the stress, lack of sleep and relaxation time, pregnancy & childbirth affecting the body, etc.) absolutely physically ages you. My great auntie is in her mid 70s, never had kids and is easily one of the healthiest pensioners I know. One of my cousins is late 40s, he and his girlfriend have been together since university, never had kids - both look early-mid 30s at most. It's honestly insane.
💯 especially since all of that burden is put on women!
Yeah all my friends who have had a baby look visibly older post. Not that it matters! Life is to be lived. I’m sure the sleep deprivation is a big factor
35 almost 36 year old Millennial here. My coworkers thought I am in my early 20s. I don't see it but I've been with me all these years. I was there in the before.
Got carded at the bar about a week ago. I’m 35!
I’m the oldest millennial at 43 (January 1981 birthday 😊) and I’ve always been told I look a good decade younger than I am. I don’t look or feel 43. I’m thankful I look like an adult now though as when I was in my 20’s people thought I was a literal child. 😮 But, I’ve never had cosmetic procedures. I’ve never had kids (not by choice). I don’t drink or smoke. I wear sunscreen and have never worn a ton of makeup. But, I think it also just has to do with genes sometimes because my parents looked young for their age until they’re 50’s. 🤷🏼♀️ Age is just a number.
41 here, but no one believes me.😅
I’m the youngest Millennial born in 96 and I feel like people forget that us younger Millennials are in our late 20’s and early 30’s. I went on a cruise recently and my friend’s cousin who is 21 asked how old I was. I said I was 28 and she said I look “ young for my age “.
doesn't sound like that has anything to do with being a millennial per se, just their idea of what 28 looks like
Now that we’ve got that out the way, can the actual elders and youth leave us alone?
Seriously, ppl who act like your 30s are elderly are annoying. If someone died at 33 no one would say “Boy, they sure lived a full life.”
I can’t understand that either!
I’m 29 (going 30 this year) and when i say my age people look like I’m anciant person or something like that lol 😅
It's not JUST because society values beauty and youthfulness. It feels nice to look good - it just does. I'm 42 and feel more confident in my skin than I ever have before. I also take really good care of myself which makes me feel good. You can't blame everything on others all the time. It is true that beauty holds societal value to a degree, I don't deny that. I'm just also saying that it feels good personally to look oneself in the mirror and be happy with what is seen. Perfection doesn't exist and beauty is subjective
Millenials are at the oldest forty-two and that isn’t really old yet
The point is that millennials look younger than previous generations did at the same age. So saying 42 isn't that old doesn't really mean anything, because previous generations were also 42; but looked older.
I'm 35 and got married two weeks ago. My husband and I had some luggage & we were struggling to find seats (with extra space) on a train. This older man says to me "running away?" ...
🤣 okay, that's pretty good.
😂😂😂

Haha yeah this happens
Everyone gets carded
More awareness of the dangers of drugs, cigarettes, fast food and alcohol than in prev generations. It all adds up
I’m an elder millennial. I don’t have kids because I can’t afford them. I’m old enough that it won’t be a thing I can ever do. I can’t afford a house of any kind. My career got derailed by a serious injury and I went back to college at 30. Even with a graduate degree, I can’t find any jobs with my disabilities (yeah, illegal, but hard to prove in court). I feel like I’m still 17. No part of my life feels like an adult except my sore joints. 😕
I'm disabled too it's annoying when it's invisible. Do your favorite job skill sets as a virtual assistant in your area, are you an admin type? Fund raising? Etc there's nonprofits looking to hire contracted workers while they're building capacity. I've been independent contracting for almost a year after a work injury and I left a reg job because F everyone
Im a 33 year old childfree millennial. Im gonna guess that not having kids is a GIANT part of the reason that I look quite a bit younger than my age. My mom had all 3 of her kids by 33, and I STILL can't imagine how lmao. I never want kids, and I had my tubes removed this month so I never would, not even accidentally. I can't even imagine having 3 kids.. let alone one 😂. I'm constantly told I look like I'm in my 20s, and I definitely don't hate it 😂. Like I said lol.. not having screaming brats in my ear, and hanging all over me 24/7 probably has a lot to do with it. Its just me, my boyfriend and our dog. We live in the woods, on several connected lakes.. and its pretty stress free compared to most people I know.
Most of my cousins have kids, and they all still look young.
George Costanza didn't have kids either, but a lot of high-blood pressure. I think all the smoking and second-hand smoke everywhere made\people much older looking. Gen Z has done more vaping, so that has ages them more
That is true, many of my coworkers are in mid 20s and 30s and often don't get the respect from old timers at work and they act like we need to be supervised and micromanaged ever 5 seconds, despite besting them in our work ethics.
Millenial guy here, I grew up basically stuck indoors playing video games and even in my 20s I was basically a homebody who doesn't smoke and didn't really start drinking until my late 20s, 2020 lockdown was when I really started taking skincare seriously but I pretty went through much of my life with just sunblock (occasionally) and I am also somewhat short. Now in my 30s I always get a ton of compliments from Gen Z and even other millennials but its definitely awkward dating wise as my age grows but physically I could still pass for dating a 21 year old even tho I actually want to date my age or older. I definitely agree with 7:21 I went through a lot of hardships career wise and I felt the need to stunt myself to avoid ageism as my professional career also didn't start until my 30s.
I'm turning 35 in two weeks on June 15th and I embrace getting older. 💯
I'm 31 and I still enjoy the things I use to do when I was in my teens and twenties, I still live at home and I don't see myself moving out anytime soon, but I'm fortunate to have a semi stable job. The funny thing is that I still see myself as a youngster and I sometimes have to remind myself of some of my responsibilities by saying to myself "It's time to be an adult" every time.
Same!
Me: walking around my new job
Employee: Oh hello are you an intern?
Me: No I'm 33 with two kids and a mortgage from more than 10 years ago! But thanks, I'm actually flattered!
Employee: Oh because you are wearing a university sweater...
Me: Yeah I'm 33 with two kids and a mortgage - if it still fits, I keeps it.
so you're 33 or 32? and you had to get a mortgage at 20? wow that's sad
The asusmptions at work are irritating
@@asia7100 aaaahhh the irony! You are judging me the same way the older generations are judging millenials for not having or even being ABLE to afford a mortgage... We should raise each other up, but punch each other down.
@@asia7100Just curious, why is that sad? Being able to afford a mortgage at 20 is amazing! She'll have her house paid off before most people. Owning a home is a great investment if you can afford it.
@asia7100 you must be a child surely to not understand it's actually very rare and lucky to own a house that young and have enough to support two kids by then.
i been told I look mid 20s to late 20s. Im almost 33 lol Partly genetics, but i work out a lot and been wearing sunscreen a lot for the last 3-4 years. I like to joke around and dont take things too serious. I'm going at my own pace and enjoying the journey
40 and same. Girl at Subway thought I was my sons sister??? I literally have a wrinkle between my brows 😂 royal jelly though

I'm on the older side of Gen Z, I can pass as a millennial. Few years ago, an old man mistook me for a middle schooler, asking me about how was the middle school national math exam and if I did well. I had to tell him that I was 22 and that I'm in uni. It was rather awkward for both of us.
So what you're saying is, you're a freshman?
AY BOYS I FOUND US SOME FRESH MEAT!!!
And as an older millennial, I have to remind people I’m almost 40 (39 to be precise), not almost or barely 30.
@@anne12876that's good for you. Take care of yourself and stay healthy 🤗
@@coffeewithextrasuga1017 thanks! I don’t feel like I’m doing anything very special. I guess I have good genes. 🤷🏻♀️
I sometimes get mistaken for a middle schooler… by middle schoolers. They sit there and tell me ALL the middle school tea and I love it!!!
Im almost 37, people really think im 27. I've been wearing makeup with sunscreen since I was 13, never suntanned, never smoked, barely drink, do yoga, eat plenty of fruit, veggies and legumes. I dont have any money, savings, dont own a home so I cant afford kids, so I feel like a failure but hey plenty of sleep and great skin
I remember an episode of ‘Bones’ where Dr. Temperance Brennan talks about ‘protracted adolescence’ and that has been stuck in my head ever since.
I'm almost 44 and still wear the style clothes I wore 15 years ago, It's my style and I like it. Who cares. Skincare, especially sunblock is super important. I wear it daily and have been mistaken for being in my 30s.
The moment i realized that tanning was bad, I started taking care of my skin and making sure I wear sunscreen. I started tretinoin at 36 and my skin has never looked better (better than in my 20s even). but also i stopped drinking alcohol & also staying up late. also regularly workout at least 3 times a week. boom, within 3 months, i saw tangible difference in my skin and health.
oh, and yes, therapy. crying to the therapist but also feeling much better afterwards.
“Why millennials seem to be aging so slowly”
Buddy, I’m 36 and I look like I’m going on 50.
A friend of mine hit thirty, and looks like my dad. I'm ten years older.
@@GamesFromSpace my deepest sympathies for your friend.
You are one of the unlucky ones.

I'm early Gen z (born March 1997) and I look younger my age than Gen Z. I don't do cosmetic surgery or some skin hacks. I just avoid the things which are non-beneficial and toxic like drinking, smoking, over indulging and not compromising on stress no matter what so ever. I'm so blessed. My parents too share the same genes and ideology
Same here, a lot of people assume I’m in my early twenties and get shocked when I say I’m 27. I think culture wise because I didn’t marry or have kids people assume I’m young. I also take care of my body and skin so it gives the illusion that I’m younger. Random but also I look and feel best in my mid and late twenties than I did in my early twenties!
I feel like, for women, there is also the factor of makeup and clothing styles. Millennials can get away with wearing little or no makeup where previous generations had to wear fuller makeup that is designed to make one look older. Less makeup and more sunscreen also means less skin damage. And of course, more casual and youthful clothing styles are in, adding to the youthful effect.
I wear a face full of makeup at 27 and still get carded whether I’m wearing makeup or not.
@perrip2355 Huh, good to know. I always looked young, and when I share my age, people believe me more when I wear makeup.
I've been swimming in sunscreen and hiding in the shadows my entire life with a dash of genetics.
People thought I was 18-22 and they were surprised that I'm in my 30s when I told them. There were a couple people who thought that my older sister (a gen x baby) was my mother and we had to tell them that we're sisters.
Another time that a person that my sister knew thought her and our late mother were sisters and they had to tell them that they were mother and daughter. They thought that our mother was a couple of years older than my sister and assumed that she was her older sister.
I think it’s mostly styling choices. There isn’t a strict rule about what old vs young people wear anymore so the lines are blurred.
I'm a millennial, I generally think I look my age, but my husband's age is, apparently, impossible to clock. At 22, he was asked if he was old enough to sit in the exit row of the airplane. At 34 he is frequently assumed to be a recent college grad. People are shocked when they find out he has kids and over 10 years of work experience.
Partially it's genetics. He's not gotten the "dad bod" and he still has all his hair, but I'm sure sunscreen and a clean shave contribute too.
I did things old school having a family young and now I own a house. And I grew up poor and had no money help with college (which I did attend!) how did I do it? I took a super risky job working in Saudi Arabia in a gig where they paid me well, paid for housing and food, and let me hide from the economic recession. I wasn’t totally sure I wasn’t going to be kidnapped. No I’m not kidding. So the answer is half dumb luck half being willing to say yes to something terrifying. I’m scared for my children because I’m pretty sure I don’t know how to replicate what happened.
Physically, people DO seem to be aging somewhat more slowly than before, primarily upper-middle class and above people, probably in large part because of their ability to access very nutritious food and extensive exercise (leading to lower obesity rates), plastic surgery in some cases, low smoking rates, less drinking than previous generations, less direct pollution and other ways that they take care of their bodies in ways previous generations couldn't. We're forming a bifurcated society where wealthy, educated people often sail easily into their 80s and 90s and poorer people can struggle to get out of their 40s, 50s and 60s (especially with opiates devastating poorer populations). Look for that to sadly continue and expand.
This older millenial girl tried to shit talk me about aging even tho she looked 45. And she didnt get that despite my youth I was in fact also a millenial. I looked so young she thought I was Gen Z 😂
She’s a Gen X, my brother is around the same age and he’s a younger Gen x. Often Gen x even the younger ones tend to not understand the difference between millennials and Gen z. My niece is only nine years younger than me and she’s Gen z.
At the end of the day, people will be judged no matter what they do so respect informed consent and ‘ageing gracefully’ shouldn’t be a dog whistle for criticising people (especially women) who undergo procedures.
We all exfoliate.
My classmates and I received our first teen johnson & Johnson skincare sets in year 7 right after learning about puberty, our first foray in sex education and growth changes including skin, sun protection, mental health. This was called health science. And another set in year 8 which looked at puberty with more complexity - this happened all the way till year 13 and was compulsory as a subject. Got more free stuff like colognes, cold creams, micellar water, sunscreen and tampons etc. Lol I still have my handbook. Also my parents and pretty much all my friends parents took us to see dermatologists very early on. So I think perhaps the ingrained education in skincare - especially sun aversion, advice about mental health, good hygiene, no smoking and reduction in alcohol intake amongst millenials thanks to McDonalds and Police drink driving campaigns and SADD is the cause. I grew up in New Zealand. Just turned 36 now but I get told I look 22.
OMG! I loved this! 💜💜💜
The sun thing is SO TRUE. I'm 41 and have always had horrible reactions to sunburns so I avoid the sun whenever I can, and my little sister is 5 years younger than me, but she has a lot of self-hatred about having pale skin and sunbathes with baby oil whenever she gets the chance, even though we have an extensive family history of melanoma. Her husband has had several cancerous biopsies and yet they still sunbathe any chance they get. She looks like she's in her mid-40s with DEEP wrinkles all over her face but people assume I'm a college student.
I watch these Gen Z kids tanning to look more ethnically ambiguous and can't help but wonder if they'll regret it when they age like milk.
We spend more time on enjoying life and avoiding things that hurt us such as work. That’s why we’re broke but look youthful.
Cuz we take care of ourselves lol
Eating less meat and foods in high carbs and fats, getting proper sleep and saving money so im not stressed about finances.

Great video, as always! That said, I just watched The Joy Luck Club the other day and I was super shocked just now to see you don't have a video on that book/movie. Please!! Do your thing 🙏🏽
37 here and people always think I’m in my late 20s
Key to it- no kids, collagen, all forms of vitamins and minerals, healthy nutrition, no alcohol very rare, constantly working out, mental health, wife who does the same, living like a 90s kid playing video games, following passions, no drugs and so much more.
We were just raised different.😂❤
People think I look young because I'm a simple casual dresser, though I'm a female. I don't wear an ounce of makeup and my hair is often pushed back. I'm short and petite. I have very youthful hobbies like playing video games and doll collecting. I can't have children physically, due to a disease, and don't want any. In all these ways, I still appear like a teenager.
But I pay my bills on time, cook and clean, pay my taxes, and am responsible in all the ways necessary. I think about my decisions so that I have as few consequences as possible, but I have learned to take necessary risks to ensure I get the best opportunities. To me, that makes me a fully grown adult.
In the must have book "The Invisible Rainbow: A History of Electricity and Life",scientists Arthur Firstenberg cites numerous studies showing that prolonged exposure to electrical fields and wireless radiation slow down human metabolism resulting in slower aging + harmful health problems.
Modern day humans are exposed to more electrosmog than previous gens.
which problems? any way to reverse?
This channel is what television should be these days, it's always great work.
This video surprised me with how it made me feel better about myself, thanks.
I am like an older millennial going on late 30's to 40's.
Sometimes, I think millennials think Gen Z are still children, even if some of us are in our 20s
I'm 36. As a child, I grew up looking at photos of athletes and always saw them as mature, adult-looking people. Today, I have trouble accepting my age, and I've realized that part of it is because I grew up understanding that a person in their 30s looks older than me and my friends today.
At the same time, I see people younger than me, whether personally or famous, and I am surprised by how old they are, because they tend to look older than me at 36 years old, mainly those who today are around 26 or younger.
I think our generation looks younger because we had an active childhood, always on the move and playing in the street and exercising, and we reach adulthood with less exposure to the sun and other factors than older generations. And young people born after 1995 or 2000 are aging faster because during their growth stage they spent time in front of a screen, they have not developed their physical skills well and they are eating very poorly, they are not able to walk for 20 minutes. They are already tired.
I also think that older generations smoke more cigarettes, and the younger ones smoke more electronic cigarettes and use more heavy drugs. I see many young people today saying that they smoke less and drink less alcohol than older people, but 20 years ago we did not see the number of young people and adolescents with drug problems as we see today. It was visible, but not to the proportion it is now. Today they consume drugs even inside schools, and others live on drinking energetic and other medications that we would never have thought to consume before.
Relevant as always 🎉🎉
This SO TRUE! Me and my friends are in our 30's and we all look the same as we did as teens 🤣haven't aged at all lol
Millennials are becoming like teenagers. Gen Zs and Gen Alphas are becoming more like senior citizens.
Gen alpha? None of them are even an adults yet. Yall just be saying stuff

Older millennial here, it became a running gag at my last job that I looked WAY younger then I was. (17-18)The uniform didn't hurt. Everyone looked young in it. I just pushed it to the extreme. That was ten years ago, but someone thought I was 21 twice last week when I'm almost 40. Very thankful for the mood boost.
Your video also explains the reactions I get from the generations after me after they learn my age. But I think showing that I give and show respect regardless of age makes it better too.
I'm 36 years old and I still wear ribbon bow for my half up half down hair tie. And nobody judges me that Im too old for it. I still love pink color.
Meanwhile GenXers look like they’re north of 70. Watch Clerks 3. These people have been rode hard and put away.
Yeah, Clerks 3, a film featuring a cast of acting hobbyists. Great example. You do realize that the youngest of Gen Xers are around 43. The majority are over 50.
Still, the phenomenon of looking noticeably younger than previous generations began with Gen X. Case in point, Paul Rudd, Ming Na Wen, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek, etc. Yet, somehow, like every other thing started by Gen X, it's either credited to Boomers or Millenials.
I am a 40 years old latina and vegan , bothe factors help me latinas definitely have the hability to turn back time and being a vegan, focusing on healthy meals and exercising properly definitelly have a huge impact. Recently i meet a vegan guy via Insta, we hanged out and later i asked him i was curious how old he was, he said 32, i told him i was 40 and he said that he could have never guessed that😂😂😂 I am proud to be a younger looking milenial :)
From a millennial - stay hydrated, stay out of the sun, hold off on kids as long as possible, keep the stress low, and do not drink. Be a kid at heart and dressing younger helps too. If you think you are old you will look it. Stay active and expand your mind as well.
As a millenial, I would say RUclips really helped me stay younger and healthier. Media keeps telling us to be aware of UVlight, drinking too much alcohol, and mental health.
It's a bar that is set just to criticize those who reach it. With absolutely no prize.
Look young for your age? You get called lazy and not taken seriously.
Look old? You get tomd you should do better and it's probably because of your bad decisions.

Me and my friends don't drink, either don't smoke or very rarely, don't do drugs, use good skincare, haircare and sunscreen + we have good informational and emotional hygiene. And then those of us who are autistic look even younger. And yea, we've all been to therapy and worked out our issues.

29 is the new 16!!!
We also have a lot more health knowledge. According to my mom, there wasn’t even a ton of emphasis on vegetables and fruits until the 90s and exercise started to be a focus in the 80s and increased into the 90s and 2000s
And just because you're getting older that doesn't mean you need to stop your hobbies and things you like just because of age....
They say "wokeness" ages you through stress. That may be true for Gen Z but how come it skipped us millenials? It's not like we're any less "woke" than Gen Z... What's the outlier?
Also, to be fair, when we were young we thought 30 equalled ancient...until we became that age. 😂
lol wokeness? Being kind and inclusive reduces stress. Harbouring hate for someone actually is harmful for your heart. Have you noticed the most anti woke people are the most wrinkled, old looking out there?
Less smokers than previous generations
I'm SO grateful for this video....I didn't think I'd relate to it as hard as I did. I always felt sort of invalidated in a way because it took me longer to do some "adult" things. For example I went to college for 8 years because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do although by the end of it I have two associate's degrees and one bachelor's degree so at least I got something out of it. But in some ways I started right out of the gate: I got married at 26 & my husband was only 21. But we had been married for 10 years by the time I was pregnant with our son who's now 2. I have a job that doesn't pay incredibly well (daycare teacher) but I am very happy with it and we're firmly "one and done" parents. Turning 40 in 6 months and we don't have a house yet but we're hoping to buy our 1st next year. I guess I should be glad I came as far as I have so far and just keep going! 😊 ❤
As you’ve discussed the changing face of adulthood on screen I’d be curious to see The Take on the trope of The Man Child (or Woman Child as the case may be) I feel like this character type was prominent in roles popularized by Steve Carrell or Will Farell in the 2000s but has either disappeared or changed in the years since.
