      I love your videos! However as a feedback in the Gloria Video too, I would have wished for a more critical look unto Gloria's more violent and (physically) abusive nature. Her hitting her husband is framed as something positive in the beginning of the video which I find rather, tbh, dusturbing. She has these violent outbursts of anger and this is why people dont respect but rather fear her, which certainly is a difference. In praisal of complex characyers I would find it great if you could also critique their darker and more toxic sides (if there are some) to their character - similarly to the Maddy Video!

    Gloria could have easily been written as a shallow, vapid gold digger, but fortunately, she's a lot more nuanced. She genuinely loves Jay, is a devoted mum to Manny and Joe, and gets on well with Claire and Mitchell, being roughly the same age as them.

      She couldn't be written as a gold digger because her character was from the start meant to parody the stereotype of younger attractive women in a marriage with an older man being seen as gold diggers... Actually, the big part of the show's focus was to parody stereotypes in general, in one way of the other...

    If there is one thing I do want to say, that even the show does acknowledge which I like, is that if Gloria didn't look like Gloria, half of the stuff she does, she wouldn't get away with it. Gloria uses her looks to her advantage without making her hallow or cruel and I like that. Because if Gloria character was written again but with a less attractive woman in the role, she would be seen more as a villain than a great person

    • @fadethechannel
      @fadethechannel 3 месяца назад +73

      Yea that’s life. It’s nature. Then again a less-attractive woman probably wouldn’t have the confidence to do or say the things she did. Possible, but less likely.

      @@fadethechannel how a less attractive woman would feel is irrelevant, because this argument creates a loop. A woman (or even man, depending on what's discussed) can be a lot less confident because they were taught that *for them* it's not acceptable to act that way.

  • @isabeldepp
    @isabeldepp 3 месяца назад +234

    Gloria is a great character, the only problem I have with her is her decision to not to speak in Spanish with her sons. At the beginning Manny used to be kind of fluent in Spanish but as the show continued, his skills almost disappeared. With Joe we never saw her talking to him in Spanish. Cultural heritage goes in hand with language skills, that's why it's so weird to decide to not to teach your mother tongue to your kids.

    • @the8u9
      @the8u9 3 месяца назад +30

      That's because language is not actually taught unless aggressively maintained. It's absorbed. Any 2nd gen immigrant that doesn't have their language as a majority language in the environment (Spanish in Los Angeles is everywhere) very naturally will stop speaking their parent's tongue because it is not technically their mother tongue.
      Furthermore, if you learn grammar, spelling, literature, and any English courses in school, you realize to master a language fully is not just simply to speak it and to maintain 2 languages to that degree is incredibly difficult.

    • @vidalibreconsentido
      @vidalibreconsentido 3 месяца назад +25

      @@the8u9 I don’t thinks that’s entirely true. For example, I live in Spain (Spanish father, Dutch mom) and speak Dutch with my children. They speak it fluently even though there’s no external stimulation for it outside our home. Even their father doesn’t speak it at all. My eldest is almost 10 and now speaks Spanish, Catalan, Dutch and English fluently… I find that the language spoken by the mother is key in a child’s early language development. 😊🙏🏼

    • @eule1233
      @eule1233 3 месяца назад +17

      I think the reason we no longer see her doing that is that the show is produced for an english speaking audience that prefers that they don't have to think about or guess at what is being said on screen. I wouldn't bet on the show telling us a story of assimilation. It's just that in a two language household the most common approach is one parent one language and a lot of the audience wouldn't be able to appreciate her character if they don't understand what is being said.

    The thing people used to criticise her the most was her looks because it fell into the Latina stereotype, but, as a curvy Latina who’s proud of her body, I loved that Gloria embraced that side of her and went full on it. I’m not going to hide or dress like a grandma because others might feel insecure. And I’m not talking about competing with other women or wanting to draw attention. Some of us like to look at ourselves in the mirror and say “yeah, I look good today” before facing the day.
    It’s not about “the others”. It’s about feeling confident about yourself. And yes, it’s only a part of personal confidence. But why should we hide it just because others find it “provocative”? It’s ridiculous.
    I loved that about Gloria.

    Women are far more guilty of treating other women, especially attractive ones, as competition. You constantly put men in that villainous position. Gloria's a fantastic character and nobody could've played her better than Sofia. Being in touch and open with your emotions is very healthy, though it must be said, there are absolutely times where reigning it in is necessary such as in work situations. If I went off on every negative Nancy I come across in my field (I work in medical), it would be a disaster (and I undoubtedly would have no career). It has nothing to do with "patriarchy" seeing as I work almost exclusively with females. It has everything to do with the fact that THEY (the parent or their family) are running on high emotions for obvious reasons. Is it right to take that out on anyone who's unfortunate enough to be in their vicinity at the wrong time? Absolutely not, but it's a part of any job in medical whether you're admin, nursing, a provider, etc.

      Women are often snubbed in all sorts of awards alas.... In the drama version of Emmys think of Game of Thrones (Modern Family has the most Emmy awards as a comedy show, GoT as a drama show, and they indeed both share great, complex characters and original writing, but I digress). Lena Headey as Cersei, 8 seasons of acting perfection, one of the rare villains you even feel sympathy for despite their numerous terrible deeds? No Emmy (instead she even got death threaths and no one wanted an autograph from her, people are dumb)... Michelle Fairley as Catelyn in probably the most intensely acted out scene I have ever seen on TV at least, the Red Wedding. Nothing... Actresses of Margaery (Natalie Dormer), Arya (Maisie Williams), Emilia Clarke (by S8 she was a phenomenal actress) as Daenerys, nothing either, Sansa, Brienne, Olenna as the most iconic guest star? Nothing.... And so on and on. The only actor who won an Emmy there was Peter Dinklage. Deserved, but he won like 3 or 4 times. I'd rather more actors and mainly actresses as this world was the first mainstream fantasy world with a lot of complex female characters from heroines to villains, but nah... And though I respect him in many ways, he got to the level of stardom through this role yet then says s*it like actors with dwarfism shouldn't play dwarves because it's something-phobic? Excuse me? Why did you film 8 seasons of being a "dwarf" (I know he is not but they called it that way there), a Narnia film as a literal dwarf etc? Countless actual actors with dwarfism felt really harmed by his statement as he is the most influential actor on the planet of this kind so he puts their careers, already at a disadvantage, at a bigger risk even. Some celebs do get full of themselves when they are too lauded. Maybe it's actually good often the best things don't win, at least the artists' egos don't then grow into enormous proportions like with Peter. For me, Sofia will always be a comedic genius, just like Lena and Michelle will be too, no matter if they won an Emmy or not. Awards are useless anyway and often too political, especially nowadays (like racial quotas for actor nominees?!).

And none of those things mean she can’t be a “girly girl”, and she absolutely is. Gloria loves her clothes, her hair, her nails. She KNOWS she is hot af and owns it. Despite it she constantly show to us that you shouldn’t mess with her, because things wont end bad for you. And it is not only on a fisical level, she WILL make you suffer and will terrorize you and torture your mind if she needs too.
    But she still is a amazingly loving person, who will do every and anything for the people she loves.
    Screw with the strong female character, she is an exemplo of how to write a strong human character period

      But that "freedom" isn't free- as Gloria herself has said in the show people don't treat her like a regular person, instead she's automatically put in the role of villain/temptress/golddigger/shallow/airhead/slut when literally did nothing except turn up, that's not fair...and it's not nice to always be seen as competition, to always be sexualized. Everybody has their own struggles, whatever they look like🤷‍♀️

    You are wrong on the topic of expressing your emotions. You act as if Gloria's regular "small" outbursts were a net positive, but they aren't.
    When you project a clear image that you will strongly react to everything you are told people stop telling you things out of fear of your reaction. They start giving you the edited truth and it's entirely your fault for not fostering an environment that feels safer to express yourself.
    There's a balance to be had between "keeping all your feelings bottled" and "bursting 7 times per day"

      You all 100% right. That truth has recently been unveiled to me by some important people in my life, because I don’t know how to properly express my emotions and they felt that they couldn’t express themselves freely without offending me, but I’m glad that I heard that hard truth because it’s what keeps me real and accountable.

    • @twiceshy9773

      You can "burst" into laughter or tears or paroxysms of joy too you know, as long as everybody gets to express themselves equally what's the problem?? I'd rather get a reaction- ANY reaction!!- rather than a blank stare all the time, at least then I'd know the person actually cares🤷‍♀️

    Wow. This channel really seems to look down on women, why am I not surprised. Why does content like this always paint us as victims? Stop blaming things like "the patriarchy" when women have it pretty well in the US. Are things perfect? No, nothing is. Other countries have it far worse, try advocating for them for once and stop thinking about yourselves.

    No No No.....that's not how emotions work. Reacting to emotions is as bad as bottling up them up. You want to acknowledge and control your reaction to the emotion and process it in a healthy way. Otherwise what is the difference between an adult and a child? And I don't want to be anywhere near a person like Gloria

    You should look into characters that people either never liked or only started disliking after a second watch and talk about the few things they did get right like Ted from How I met your mother or Ross from Friends and on the opposite take a character that people tend to like and agree with and point out where they were wrong like Katara from Avatar the last Airbender or Mabel from Gravity falls.

    I love Gloria BUT she was wrong about a lot, especially her kids' upbringing and spoiling them too much, or sabotaging Manny's relationships - some toxic motherhood stuff right there. Manny became a totally out-of-touch egomaniac because Gloria just praised him for everything... Yes, ruining your kid's confidence is horrible, just in another way, but she made Manny one of the least likeable characters... Joe was considered boring at best, annoying and most useless character at worst. But otherwise I agree. She helped Jay grow a lot as a person, as a father to ALL his kids....She does know her worth, she is a great problem-solver, she won't conform when people want her to change for their comfort, her security and fearlessness are indeed inspirational.... But let's not forget she stole the life of her sister. Honestly one of the very worst things anyone from the main cast has done. I love her, but objectively, she has done many, if not most of the most questionable things in the whole 11-season show (not counting the side characters like DeDe, Pameron, or that reality agent a**hole I can't recall the name of - he is definitely the WORST, Gloria can't compare). But let's not make this black-and-white and paint Gloria as some kind of saint. The show won more Emmy awards than any other comedy show in history mainly because of its quality writing and realistic, flawed characters you love (and sometimes hate).

    I don’t think people are trying to keep women quiet from society. I think it’s the opposite if you’re gonna be annoying, they wanted to do that with him to other females. The problem is they want to do that to men and they have their own stress struggle they don’t want more attitude. It’s just as simple.
