It may sound cliche to say I am beyond grateful, but so be it. Thanks for taking the time to give Tempus a try and to give me valuable advice. I am currently working on the opening of a trilogy set in the same universe, and not one word of wisdom you gracefully gave will go unreckoned (I have noted it all down!).
I must emphasize that I appreciate the kind words and the incredible gesture. And I will certainly keep you updated; let's stay in touch!

I loved town square and I can't wait for the next one, this week I went ahead and reread the golden compass by Philip Pullman because the week before I had sudden wave of nostalgia for it because I read it when I was younger. It was a good reread, I was able to appreciate the themes way more this time but also I was able to appreciate what had already I liked more. The characters and worldbuilding. I was able to relate to the character more this time even though I'm no longer a child. The alternative world he had created felt so different yet very similar with references to things in this world that I got this time making it feel more real even though its just as fantastical and weird as it was when I was younger. The themes are also quite profound for a middle grade book but it ties back into the coming of age story that this is. It also made me tear up at times and I questioned whether this should be considered middle grade fantasy at all cause it does have some violent, brutal and sad things that happen in it. I plan on reading white nights by Dostoevsky, its a very short story and then Ill pick up Malazan again in book 2 where I left it. Also I highly recommend the audiobook because it full cast. Anyhow have a nice week and Jakob is a huge liar because Mr.Pooh is the cutest thing in the universe.

    • @Talking_Story
      @Talking_Story  Месяц назад +1

Wow great insights on Pullmans work. I think it will be a classic for younger readers cause it treats younger with respect by throwing out important thought provoking themes and believable characters. Those books never judge a younger audience and never writes down to that audience. Jakob lives to give Pooh a hard time but never misses and opportunity to hug that pug so I think it all in good fun😂.

Glad to see Gardens of the Moon and Assassin's Apprentice on the wheel.
This week I decided to set aside M.L.N Hanover's (Daniel Abraham) Unclean Spirits and my re-read of Joe Abercrombie's Blade Itself aside for now because I decided to finish up some other series first, while also getting back to other genres.
I didn't get much reading done this week, was out celebrating a coworker's birthday and took part in a pub quiz hosted by a friend the following evening but I did get a little bit done and I'm currently reading:
    *Epic Fantasy*
Wars of Light & Shadow 1: Curse of the Mistwraith
    - The mood struck to pick it back up, wasn't a DNF or anything like that, it was a mood thing, and I'm now halfway through and I'm enjoying it. I'm loving the dynamic between our protagonists, the half brothers Lysaer and Arithon, and the rest I'm still getting to grips with.
    *Historical-Fantasy*
Children of Earth & Sky / Guy Gavriel Kay
    - I'm taking my time with this one and I'm loving every second and I'm only a third of the way through. I neglected Kay last year and I hope not to repeat that mistake this year. He's a Top 5 modern Fantasy author for me at this point. I've always been fascinated by the Renaissance period so reading Kay's take has been fantastic so far.
    *Sci-Fi*
    Sun Eater 2: Howling Dark
    - I was going to re-read Empire of Silence a few weeks ago but i remembered more than I thought I would so I went ahead and picked this up instead and so far it's off to an intriguing start though I'm only 2 chapters in.
After those I'm thinking I'm gonna stick with GGK for A Brightness Long Ago which I believe is a prequel to Children of Earth & Sky with more of a focus on the Italian inspired setting and I've been feeling the itch to restart Streets of Laredo, I'm missing those characters from Lonesome Dove and Lonesome Dove is easily one of my favourite books of all-time now.

Always one of my favorite times of the week when I see my BookTube uncle getting back in the saddle and talking about all the stuff he's read and watched during the week. i haven't been doing a lot of reading this past few weeks, except for Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell of course. Now in June, I must blame Carlos and Yolanda from Storytoob and their bad influence because I'll be picking up The Power of The Dog from Don Winslow...no not the movie that had Benedict Cumberbatch in it, it's a crime novel about the border. It'll be a little tricky reading in June since I'll be in a class, but since it'll be the one class...I think I'll have some wiggle room there.
I think you would love Annihilation, given your unabashed love for cosmic horror. The whole trilogy is masterful, and really cements Jeff VanderMeer as one of the greats of science fiction, might be my favorite SF writer working today. It is too bad the other book was picked, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
You know, I always wanted a pug...and I also want to get in on that Town Meeting action! Great video boys, keep it up!

I finished Of Darkness and Light. The 2nd half of this book is when the series really takes off for me. There are many storylines and many characters with similar names, Dan, Dahlen, Damon…& Dane !I read the Exile out of Order so Dane is my favorite, forget the Draylid. Funny, John Gywnne creates a secondary character too that steals the show in The Faithful & the Fallen. I think Cahill did it here too.
I am almost done with We are the Dead and it is 5 stars for me. It is more modern than the B&B, there is more gravitas to it. Like you said in your video, it feels like it could be a story that fits right into our world.

I am so happy you liked Tress, that is one of my mom’s favorites. I finished Curse of the Mistwraith, but even better, I got my mom to watch your interview one Janny Wurts and now she is planning on trying to listen to Curse of the Mistwraith herself! It makes me very happy when she jumps into my world of Fantasy. It had probably one of my favorite prologues of all times, although the contender is TWOK’s prologue but they are shooting for extremely different things. Even the chapter structure of this book was helping to set things up all across the world and it just so easily subverts things I know. One big trope is kind of flipped on its head and then it subverts something else which is a big spoiler so I won’t say anything. Then there was the characters and every character was so intriguing and the conflict which grows to begin the war is so nuanced and feels like it has deep stakes, but it also feels like we haven’t been shown all of the things at stake here. The only downside for me was that it felt like the slowest book I have ever read, but it was still great. If you enjoy seeing the world unfold in an adventure as you roam the continent like in LOTR then believe me, you will enjoy this a TON. Then, I started reading Threadlight. I am about 70 pages from finishing the second book in the omnibus. I have been devouring this trilogy like it is candy because I can do little else (I got my wisdom teeth removed) and it has such a great time because it is a story about family. And I love that, parent-child relationships are probably my favorite to see depicted in almost anything, especially seeing a father’s POV (couldn’t tell you why). Anyways, I’m done rambling now and I hope you have a fantastic week. I am going to go try to wrap up the Second threadlight book and keep working on my own writing. Happy Reading to you all!

Still in the expanse world, book 4. I don't think I'll finish before the end of the month, I don't read 100 pages a day, but I also need to start season 5 of peaky blinders. I tried episode 1 of fallout and I fell asleep, I'm a mood reader and worse, a mood viewer. I loved Shogun so I might have withdrawals from that, I love asian inspired things (and I'll eventually get to that book series as well). Oye, there's too many books and so little time. Mr Pooh Bear looked a bit confused about the process, but at least he doesn't chew your books, my cat is demon spawn. So yeah, nothing finished this week, but my wish list is getting out of hand.

I totally understand the wishlist being out of control. If u r on book 4 you may be in Expanse for a while. I gotta do season 5 of Peaky myself.

@@Talking_Storyyes I'll definitely be neck deep for a bit, but it's an amazing ride, even with the show. I had character candles custom made because I love the story so much, and Holden, like the show, grows on you to where you want to protect him with your life. He's what is affectionately known as a cinnamon roll, though with his coffee obsession, tiramisu might be better. He's my tiramisu character.
That's crazy that we're both needing to do season 5 of peaky, small world. I watch reaction videos so I've been introduced to a lot of good series through them or being able to watch an episode and watch a reaction, kept me engaged more. When I'm done, I'd love to join the monthly/quarterly books so I can have someone to bloody talk to about books, but I am massively behind lol. Should see me when I watch bookshelf tours, the amount of envy I feel is ridiculous, for one, there are no shelves for my books and special editions can cost a mortgage payment...or half of one. This is a very expensive hobby, being a book dragon, made especially tough when you have no place to put books. 1st world problems. Guess now is a good time to read, cat on the lap, rule is no moving anywhere until they're done, so I'm parked here.

I disagree with your disagreement with Brandon. I think you can start almost anywhere in the Cosmere (including Tress) and be perfectly fine (as long as it's not the middle of a series). I think most people way over-emphasize the effect that reading order will have on enjoyment - as a few other people have said, you will just get the connections in a different order. Great video. You guys are hilarious.

I can totally see that point. I am a bit OCD and as long time comics fan I think things have to be read in full runs and following the number on the cover. Everyone should read how and what they want. Wherever their enjoyment takes them. Thanks so much for making me think about that. I can get stuck in my ways.

Been a good week for me, reading going well if a bit slow. However more exciting is that the release date for my writing groups third anthology is nearly here 🎉 Can't wait, this has been the most fun working on. I may be a complete newbie at writing but I have to say this is probably my favourite short story I have done. Sorry for my (not so) humble brag. 😅

Hi John. Another fabulous episode. Great constructive criticism to the novela Tempus. Having heard you mention your background in comics, I've recently just started reading some. Any recommendations or would you consider doing an episode on comics. If you have the time of course 😊

Have been asked to do my fav comics for a while. Thinking about it. Looking for classic superhero stuff Batman Court of Owls. Daredevil Guardian Devil are good places to start. More fantasy try Locke and Key or Sandman. Leaning more into horror Nice House on the Lake is cool. Let me know what you think about trying.
