Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving Ark of Ascension a try, and for all the love you've expressed for it! Your comments have really made my day, and you've put a smile on my face after a couple of very challenging days dealing with a loss in the family. Thank you, and I assure you my wife is a very open person who will take your comments with good humor!

I’m so happy you enjoyed Of Blood and Fire- that means Mr. Cahill has you in his grip. I loved hearing about your thoughts after having read The Fall first. I read it after book one and I enjoyed Blood and Fire more than The Fall mostly because I didn’t like how it was almost entirely fights. But if you really enjoyed Of Blood and Fire, of Darkness and Light is a step up.
Now Tress is an absolute delight. I love it so much and the seas are probably my favorite concept/magic system if not ever, than for a really long time.
My week started with me reading Robin Hobb’s The Golden Fool. I went in very worried because I had heard so many people say it was incredibly slow to the point of being boring but I read it and thought that everybody else was crazy. It continued to tackle so many wonderful themes of Prejudice and becoming a man and how that affects your relationship with others and it was just so phenomenal. I could relate to so many things in this book that Hobb just kept putting my heart on her puppet strings. I almost jumped straight into the book but I did not allow it because I love this book more and more as I get time away from it.
But yesterday I started reading Curse of The Mistwraith and… wow. I am 125 pages in and I love how wonderfully fleshed out the world is. Knowing the effort Wurts has put into it makes it so much cooler although I am more confused than I was when I read book one of Malazan. It’s just a lot of information but it does not take away from how good the relationship dynamic is between the main two brothers. I am the oldest of five siblings by a lot. Seeing how these brothers have such a tumultuous relationship and it hurts me as I hope the best for them. I am excited to keep reading it though. After that I will be reading The Threadlight trilogy. Now that I have said my piece, Have a great week!

I am headed to Mistwraith and Threadlight as well as Hobb so I am so happy to hear all your insight. I would say I am definitely in Cahills clutches. I really want to see how book 2 takes this step I keep hearing about. Have a wonderful week as well my friend.

All last week's content was so amazing, including the CWN episode on Friday. I commented that you almost beat Allen as my favourite guest, so there's that 🤣
Delighted to hear that Of Blood and Fire was a strong start for you, and I can guarantee that wheel starts rolling real smoothly and it just turns into one crazy rollercoaster. Can't wait for you to read on! Will tune into the livestreams for sure ;)
And oooh, I am so excited for the upcoming videos this week! Thanks for continuing to bring me so much joy with your rambly bookish chats 🤩
I read an ARC of Hell for Hire by Rachel Aaron (coming out June 4) and you better pre-order that thing (JUST LOOK AT THE COVER!) because it is flipping amazing!! Urban fantasy with loveable demons and a male witch with his snarky cat familiar and sentient broom.. A-MA-ZING! And only 350 pages as well, so you can blow through it! Happy reading ;)

This last week has been a weird one, but I completed The Legend of Black Jack, which I thought was a really good book and a nostalgic read since it reminded me of some of the books I read when I was growing up like Oliver Twist or Tom Sawyer (though Andy tells me that Tom would probably outwit our main character in this story). A good old fashioned adventure! I am going to take the rest of the month to do some catch up with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and prep some of my upcoming summer reads. I am getting out of the semi-slump I was in and I'm refocusing. I also saw Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes recently, which was a solid film with some great performances, particularly with Kevin Durand as the villain. I don't think it holds up to the Serkis trilogy, but I wasn't expecting that level of quality either.
This week sounds like an exciting one. I'm gonna do podcasts for most of the week, yay! Keep up that quality content uncle.

    • @Talking_Story

While I agree with "give me a longer book", as someone else who started out with a novella I agree with Michael's wife as well. You learn a ton about writing and self publishing in your first book. I think the journey is a lot easier to wrap your head around so that it's easier going forward. It's also less of a hit on the pocket book, so a less expensive lesson that a full blown novel.

That's why i don't take part in buddy reads or readalongs, too much of a mood reader. Chaos reigns supreme 😅
    This week I finished:
    *Mystery*
    Shutter Island / Dennis Lehane
    - Superb stuff, I'll certainly be reading more Lehane in the near future.
    *Warhammer 40K: Grimdark Military Sci-Fi*
    Gaunt's Ghosts: A Ghost Return
    - Short story prelude to a much longer series.
I did read 100 pages of Robert McCammon's Swan Song... and all it made me want to do was re-read The Stand (the Uncut version this time 😅)
As for what I'm currently reading:
    *Historical-Fantasy*
Children of Earth & Sky / Guy Gavriel Kay
    - Restarted it. I'm a sucker for Renaissance inspired settings.
    *Urban Fantasy*
Black Sun's Daughter 1: Unclean Spirits
    - The author M.L.N Hanover is actually Daniel Abraham. I was looking for something to fill the Dresden void, and not only is this complete but its only 5 books (assuming i like it to continue!)
I didn't watch this week's Doctor Who episode but i did rewatch the Laurel & Hardy film Way Out West, hysterical.

Feel like I'm quite alone in my Bound and the Broken opinions. A lot of people either like or don't like the series, but I'm in a weird position where I really like the novels but kinda hate the novellas. I think if I read The Fall first, I wouldn't have continued with the series. 0.5 stars from me, almost unreadable. 90 pages that felt longer than the 500 pages Of Blood and Fire.
Of Blood and Fire is the one I read first and it was great! Plus I think the actual prose is better. The Fall is filled with so many repetitions and awkward word choices that *really* shows because it's so short. Of Blood and Fire felt way cleaner to me.
It's a good series but I guess I'm also just a big fan of beginning more than anything else. All the flashy action stuff doesn't work for me.
Anyway those are my un-asked for opinions! Just felt like getting it out there 😂

    • @Talking_Story
      @Talking_Story  2 месяца назад +1

Opinions are always wanted here. I agree about the repetitions and some word choices. That is why I think the prose took a step for me from novella to novel. And why I look forward to continuing to see where the writer and the story goes.

    • @HabitualBlood
      @HabitualBlood 2 месяца назад

@@Talking_Story I think you'll really enjoy the series as it goes on. I think the writing is the most improved by Of War and Ruin (Of Darkness and Light does suffer so repetitive description issues that brings it down a tad for me), but then it also becomes a bit more anachronistic in its dialogue and humour. A mixed bag series for me but also very very fun and nostalgic. Brought me back to the joy of reading fantasy as a teen.

@@HabitualBlood yes it does that nostalgic feel for me as well. Took me back to the Riftwar.

Here are all the references I caught in «The Lesser Devil»:
Tor Alcuin: Alcuin was a Northumbrian Scholar at Charlemagne’s court, named by the chronicler Einhard as «the most learned man anywhere to be found», part of the Carolingian Renaissance and the invention of lower case letters
Lud: Ludwig, but also the Biblical Lud (grandson of Noah, ancestor of the Lydians), King Lud (mythical founder of London, possibly connected to the Celtic Mythical Heroes Lludd Llaw Eraint (Wales) and Nauda Airgetlam (Ireland)) and the City of Lud from «The Dark Tower» series
    Albe: French Village
The Cid Arthur Cult being popular in the Legions: Akin to Mithraism in the Roman Legions
St. Maximus: 7th Century Theologian, prosecuted, tortured and exiled from Constantinople (he is often named «The Confessor», someone prosecuted but not martyred for their faith) for his dyophysite interpretation of the nature of Jesus (that Jesus was both human and divine), which later become the orthodox view and he became reinstated as a saint in both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
Euclid: Ancient Greek Mathematician, Non-Euclidean Geometry shows up in HP Lovecraft, HG Wells and Dostoevsky’ «Brothers Karamazov»
The white-haired Durantine Girl: Daenerys or other Targaryans, or Jorah’s Daenerys ersatz in «A Song of Ice and Fire»?
Young Lord Albans: Saint Albans, the first British Christian Martyr
A Lord’s son and a female relative seeking refuge from noble infighting at an old Terraforming Station now used by the locals: Dune 😄
    Almonhas: The Almohads/Moors?
Lord of Emperors: Title used for the god Jad in the «Sarantine Mosaic» by Guy Gavriel Kay
Laurent’s real name Lorn: «To lose», Adjunct Lorn from «Malazan»
Baptists being «extinct heretics»: Yeah, Ruocchio is Catholic, alright! 😂
    Veselko: Slavic name
Medved: «Bear» in multiple Slavic languages
    Temeria: Nation in «The Witcher»! 😄
    Ruocchio: Avenged Sevenfold-fan? 😄
The many-legged colossi: AT-AT/AT-TEs from Star Wars? Spider Tanks from «Ghost in the Shell»?
    Lord of Hosts: Micah 4,4
A few warriors and villagers against an larger Enemy force: Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven! 😄
    Carlo: «Westworld» style Android!😄

I tried 2 seasons of Star Trek Discovery. I really wanted to let it work, hence the 2nd season. It did not feel like Star Trek to me. The whole "we're not a military org so let's have zero respect for the bridge and rank" really got under my skin as a military person, especially since they're always treated both of those with due respect in the entirety of Star Trek. There were other issues as well, but those issues were the bamboo under my nails.

@@Talking_Story Lower Decks is great. I have not started Strange New Worlds yet, but from what I hear it''ll probably be up my alley. I think I keep forgetting to start watching it lol. I'll watch it before I rewatch DS9, because that's on my list to do.
