4:25 The characters in the initial fight sequence represented real world leaders, they were Idi Amin (Uganda), Yasser Arafat (Palestine), Fidel Castro (Cuba), Ayatollah Khomeni (Iran), Muammar Gaddafi (Libya), and Mikhail Gorbachev (Soviet Union).
Leslie Nielson had this brand of humor that was so unique I don't know how to describe it exactly. It's like this dead pan, oblivious delivery. He's somehow stupid and clever and lucky and unlucky. He manages to solve just a few more problems than he causes. Whatever you call it, I've never seen anyone to it like him.
Because i feel he was the last actor to do this kind of comedy. You should check before him to find more. For example, "Laurel and Hardy" are a older example and they are so funny even today :D
You guys are so right about this being a type of comedy film that really isn't seen anymore. And even the parts that shouldn't have aged well after all these years like O.J. Simpson starring somehow did because you literally get to watch him get comically abused during the whole trilogy...
Like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Airplane it always surprises me when younger reviewers don’t recognize Reggie Jackson, one of the greatest baseball players of all time. But then again I am old. Lol
One of the jokes you guys might not have gotten was the fact that The producers got John Houseman to play the driving instructor. John Houseman famously worked with Orson Welles and had a huge career as a serious actor and producer and notably as a national spokesman for a brokerage firm. It was hilarious just to see a great serious actor in a crazy comedy like this. This was his final film. He didn’t take a credit for it.
Naked Gun is the only trilogy I own. I had the pleasure of meeting Leslie when I was videotaping a behind-the-scenes video of a video he was making called Bad Golf Made Easier. Also, back in the late 70s and early 80s, I was a lineman at Van Nuys Airport north of LA. George Kenedy was a pilot who owned his own Beechcraft Bonanza. I used to talk to him a lot when I was fueling up his plane. On another note, I enjoy watching you guys and I understand all of the copyright restrictions that you're bound to follow, however, I find it incredibly distracting to try to watch and enjoy the movie as you see it when you have to blur out a whole bunch of scenes.
I'm glad that you guys finally got around to this one! One of the funniest comedies of the 80s! Awesome to watch in the theater! "I Must Kill The Queen...." Ha Ha!
Leslie Nielsen was a funny guy. He loved a good fart joke so much that he carried a device in his pocket that made fart noises and would use it during interviews on talk shows and during parties he went to. His tombstone actually reads “Let ‘er rip”.!
Leslie Nielsen died in 2010 he also worked on the movie "superhero movie" as the uncle of the main character pretty much parodying Spiderman and many other superhero movies.
One of the problems with modern comedy that tries to replicate this formula: they try to be topical and mock things in pop culture. What a great series of movies. I saw them all in the theater. I remember watching Police Squad and how hilarious it was, only to be cancelled. The end always had a fake freeze frame where someone in the shot was totally moving around the scene. They even had one with a monkey destroying the set as the actors tried to maintain a straight face. This same team did "The Kentucky Fried Movie", which is basically their SNL sketches to raunchy for TV at the time.
I think it kinda makes sense that the TV show didn't make it but the movies did. I've heard the show was cancelled because the average viewer wasn't ready to pay as much attention as the amount of jokes per scene would demand, but when you go to the movies you kinda commit to it more and have less distraction.
It was a lionfish. The Japanese, or also Siamese, fighting fish is better known as a betta fish in America. The small fish in pet stores that have to be kept apart or a fight to the death will ensue. The best movie featuring betta’s was the 007 movie From Russia With Love, where Ernst Stavro Blofeld has a small tank with three betta’s in it, and observes how his criminal organization SPECTER is like the smart fish that stays back and watches the other two fight furiously until one is dead, and the other too exhausted to be able to defend himself, so the smart fish has an easy task of killing the exhausted fish. Kind of like the game of war where you antagonizing two of your enemy countries to fight a bitter war with each other until one is destroyed, the other greatly damaged, and you easily conquer that remaining country.
The series is so great, you'll love it if you enjoyed this. The driver's Ed scene with Stephanie I could watch on a loop. The end of that with the Chinese running from the fireworks shop kills me.
Hot Fuzz is one of the last great parody movies imo, it's super witty and understands so much about the cop genre that it's able to make fun of every aspect of it while also being a damn good police movie in its own right. Hope you guys check it out sometime. Tropic thunder is also fantastic and came a year or two later.
Police Squad did not bomb on TV,it just didn't get an audience. The producers realized that the comedy depended on the audience paying attention like in a theater, at home there were to many distractions. Check out the movie the Forbidden Planet, that has Leslie Neilson in the 1950s doing dramatic roles. The premise of the Airplane movie was to do comedy with dramatic actors.

I had all these people telling me how hilarious Tropic Thunder was. I bought the movie online and watched. I sh!t you not, I did not laugh once!!! Horrible movie in my opinion. But hope they enjoy.
IMO the reason this movie works is because the writers/producers/directors actually liked/loved the movies they were parodying. The jokes aren't sarcastic or mean they are out of loving what they are joking on.
Another Zucker Abraham Zucker movie that was funny IMO was "Ruthless People" (1986) starring Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, Bill Pullman, Bette Midler. A lot of good storylines came from that era. Touchstone Studios, did produced some good stuff! I liked this movie, about the scene floating body on the water ahha.

29:08 - It's funny you should mention the terminator. OJ Simpson was originally who they were thinking of casting as the terminator instead of Arnie. But they passed on him because they thought he was too nice of a guy to play the role.
Guys, we need: - The Naked Gun 2 & 3 - Loaded Weapon 1 - Hot Shots 1 & 2 - High School High - Mafia! - Spy Hard - Scary Movie 1 & 2, maybe 3 - Not Another Teen Movie Thank you and happy holidays!
let it be noted that this movie still exists, even after the controversy with OJ. that's what we did with movies, especially comedy movies, from the day: we DID NOT, TAKE THEM, SERIOUSLY. they are *MOVIES* , not personal ideology manifestos to live by!
Late to the party because you did this several months ago, but you mentioned the TV show this was based on. I watched that show when it came out, it only lasted six episodes. For 10-year-old me, it was absolutely hilarious, but it was indeed ahead of its time, and succeeded as a movie six years later. I think a big part of the reason for that is because in a movie theater you can pay attention to the movie and nothing else. A movie like this wouldn't work nowadays for the same reason the TV show didn't, most people watch movies at home now, and have distractions, when this style of humor requires paying attention. In between Airplane! and this was "Top Secret!" with Val Kilmer.
As others have mentioned you should check out Hot Shot 1&2 provided you've seen the source material, but also for insanely witty, clever and hilarious banter, you have to dive into the all-time champions the Brits; from "Fawlty Towers", "Father Ted", "Black Books" and of course "Black Adder" are all brilliant. (side note: with Black Adder, recommend skipping the first season, it didn't find itself until season 2; each season is set in a different historical era following the descendants of the main characters so don't need to worry about missing out on crucial information, or plot points and storylines)! Also don't forget to react to "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" you both enjoyed "Snatch" so much it would be criminal not to!
A serious competitor for the title of Best Comedy ever made. Life of Brian is another one, and I personally consider Kung-Fu Hustle to be in that competition too. And of course The Naked Gun 2 and 3. That joke from 3 where they arrive at the Oscars and get boxed in in their car from all sides makes me laugh tears every time.
Yeah, movies tend to be very much done by specific formulas today. From what I've heard, Corridor Digital here on RUclips were approached to make a movie, so they wrote a draft and handed it over for approval. They were basically told that certain things need to be done certain ways, some parts had to occur at specific parts of the movie timeline, and so on. They ended up backing out of the deal because they couldn't abandon everything that made their movie idea good, just to fit what the formula wanted. These big studios know what makes money, and refuse to budge from that. They don't want to try anything new anymore because it's an unknown risk. It's less about the craft, and more about maximising profits. That's why smaller studios make the more interesting movies, because they have nothing to lose from trying something new.
That's honestly so sad, I love Corridor Digital and would love to see a movie by them but what's the point in doing so when you're being told and given a formula to follow? I think that's why we don't see any of these crazy or wild ideas in film anymore, the 80's specifically had so many and I love that about the era.

that's what we did with movies, especially comedy movies, from the day: we DID NOT, TAKE THEM, SERIOUSLY.
they are *MOVIES* , not personal ideology manifestos to live by!

All three Naked Gun films are worth watching. Other parody films that are worth watching… Hot Shots, HotShots Part Dues and Top Secret.
hysterical movie!! the tv show, police squad was the exact same formula!! very funny stuff!!😁 lots of that lab guy and everything!😁😅😁
One of the best comedies of all time
As others have mentioned you should check out Hot Shot 1&2 provided you've seen the source material, but also for insanely witty, clever and hilarious banter, you have to dive into the all-time champions the Brits; from "Fawlty Towers", "Father Ted", "Black Books" and of course "Black Adder" are all brilliant.
Absolutely loved the Hot Shots series. Lloyd Bridges is great in the 1st movie, somehow even better in the 2nd.
The home plate umpire carries extra baseballs in special pockets for when a baseball is knocked outside the field.
The Doctor and the driving instructor play brothers in the Tom Hanks movie 'The Burbs'. You should watch that next. It's hilarious 😊
The ‘Burbs is pure gold.
@@sassypantsg.6617 Hell yes 😊 Now I feel like watching it, lol.
The Klopeks 😂🤣
One time I met someone he said “hello” I replied with “the feelings mutual”
A serious competitor for the title of Best Comedy ever made. Life of Brian is another one, and I personally consider Kung-Fu Hustle to be in that competition too. And of course The Naked Gun 2 and 3. That joke from 3 where they arrive at the Oscars and get boxed in in their car from all sides makes me laugh tears every time.
lesley saved the queens life for another 34 years left
lol!! just started watching, so far you guys are perfect to watch this kind of movie with!
Leslie Neilson is a national treasure
was 😑.... was 😢
Please watch 2 1/2 The Smell Of Fear and 33 1/3 The Final Insult!
Leslie was also in a few episodes of due south with Paul Gross and was also in men with brooms.
With his Fart machine
Try Hot Shots. Great parody movie with the same humour.
However, you must watch Top Gun before seeing Hot Shots!
@@Rallarbusen And Rambo for the sequel, but I think they already might have.
Bingo....
What do we got?
Dun dun....
FUCKING SHIT😂😂
