This movie doesn't get enough credit for subverting the evil stepdad thing. Jerry is pretty objectively a better dad but when Jim Carrey wants to be there for Max, Jerry backs off.
I'd say you have it half-right; Jerry is objectively a better father figure when you compare them, but by himself, Jerry doesn't connect with Audrey nor Max. He's 100% sympathetic and honestly? It's sad and almost tragic what happens with him, because truly does care for and loves them, and you are 110% right that he doesn't get the credit he deserves for not only backing out/off, but he's happy for Max being happy with his father.
Nah!!! you can’t be mad at jerry, all he wanted was to be a good dad and marry someone he loved. He wasn’t an asshole, just an obstacle. I feel sorry for the dude
Jerry is the secret hero of this movie. Sure, he’s 50 on the inside and super-cringe, but he’s the guy who never cheats, pays for a step kid’s college, and always lets you pick the movie. His biggest sin is that he just tries too hard.
25 years ago everyone cheered for Fletcher without question. Now, people consider and discuss the value of Jerry and question whether the lesson Fletcher supposedly learned is likely to last past a week. People complain that everything is "too PC" these days but I think this movie is a good example of how it doesn't actually matter. We all can and still do laugh at a funny movie, but we are much better at not taking everything for face value, and at acknowledging that the fucked up values and lessons to be found in fictional media rarely transfer over well to real life. Seems like a much healthier and still happy existence to me. Although side note, Cary Elwes hates Ted Cruz and Jim Carrey assisted Jenny McCarthy to light the fire to the anti-vax movement, so, yanno. Sometimes life does imitate art.
But then he became a doctor, played a game, and sawed his foot off. Of coarse this was after spending a few years as the Dread Pirate Robert’s and recovering from being “mostly dead”
It shows a life lesson If your just pure nice in life you don’t have any edge and women want a man with some alpha in them Jerry was scared of any women he was with
One of Jim Carrey's best, funniest movies. He was on fire during this time in his career. The scripts felt like mere guidelines because all you had to do was let Jim go nuts and improv on the fly and you were getting comedy gold.
I had forgotten how funny this film was. I totally agree with you both about Jim Carey as well. He is one of those actors/comedians that you never realized you needed - and he is a dying breed. His dramatic work is also impressive, which judges shows he is a huge talent :)
fun fact the meeting in the boardroom ...everything was improvised by everyone...the original script just called for the woman to say "what do you think of him?" and then jim says that cow dung line and the boss just says "I admire your honesty" and that's it lol...I read the original script online
Funny thing is that he could've gotten the continuance WITHOUT LYING by just telling the judge that he was just given this case the night before & he needed time to prepare for court. Even LegalEagle said so! Of course, we wouldn't have a movie if he did that.
The guy that thinks Capt Marvel was justified in electrocuting a guy, threatening to rip his arm off and stealing his bike because he touched her map and asked her to smile?
A part of me wishes my dad was cool like that when I was a kid. Not the whole lying thing, but just the wholesome parts Max gets to spend with his dad. Pulling presents out from under the shirt, doing the Claw, etc. You know, father-son bonding.
The film is dedicated to Jason Bernard who played his last role as Judge Stevens in this film and shortly after died of a heart attack. When Judge Stevens first walks in the courtroom and the guard says: "Please stand up to receive honorable Judge Marshall Stevens", Fletcher mocks the word "honorable". Since he was under the effect of the wish, he may know the judge is a corrupt one. This is Jason Bernard's second appearance in a movie about a lawyer under the supernatural influence who ends up behaving like a maniac in court. The first was All of Me (1984) starring Steve Martin.
One of the most memorable scenes is the pen scene where he tries so hard to lie even while writing and his son's truth curse prevents even that. Also you gotta love how his claw bit and his hand scene was loosely inspired by Army Of Darkness where Ash's hand gets possessed
The thing about this movie that gets me the most isn't Jim Carrey as the manic comic that he is and always will be, but Cary Elwes playing the straight man. Elwes' comedic chops equal, and sometimes even rival Jim. The casting is perfect here. And Elwes also pulls through with an incredible American accent. And what makes it better is knowing that Kevin Costner had such an atrocious English accent in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves that Elwes referenced it in Robin Hood, Men in Tights. Quote: " And unlike some other Robin Hoods I can speak with an English Accent!"
The Jim Carrey movie everyone seems to forget is "The Grinch That Stole Christmas", which is easily as good of a performance as any of his other movies.
Fun with Dick and Jane! A very underrated Jim Carrey movie with Téa Leoni, its a remake and totally entertaining and what I consider classic Jim Carrey.
Maura Tierney, who plays is ex-wife, is also comedy gold, coming out of the illustrious Newsradio pedigree, where pretty much every character was massively talented, one of funniest sitcoms ever (up there with Seinfeld and Arrested Development imho).
I love this movie, one of my all time favs, the cast is great, even the supporting characters. I love how this movie has comedy, but also a touching story.
The thing I notice most a lot of Jim Carrey's films where he's doing comedy there is always a hell of a lot of bloopers, in his movie Bruce Almighty on the DVD there are bloopers and outtakes I can honestly say I was on the verge of damn near wetting my pants that's how funny it was 🤣🤣🤣
My husband is sooo that dad! Not the lying part though, but my daughter has been the same way ever since I can remember and she's 14. they are always hilarious together or apart. I'm more on the mellow side, but sometimes I'll play along, and I laugh every day, between the both of them. I'm pretty sure she gets it from him, but sometimes I think it's just her own thing. Sometimes it can be a little too much for me, but it's wonderful overall!
This was the movie that made me think Jim Carrey could do more than just be a slapstick clown. I loved Ace Ventura, but he almost plays a human being here. Obviously, he did that with The Truman Show and my favourite, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, where you got the old, goofy Jim Carrey and the new Jim Carrey who could be a human being.
I have always felt that Jim Carrey was a brilliant performer, but that his almost frantic energy needed to be tightly reined in to be most effective in acting. He's best when he can get away from the slapstick humor he's been mostly stereotyped into.
Jim Carrey is like one of the best (and one of my favourite) actors/comedians. If you guys reacting to his movies, you've got to react to 1) The Truman Show 2) Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind 3) The Cable Guy 4) Dumb and Dumber 5) Bruce Almighty 6) Ace Ventura 7) The mask 8) Man on the moon 9) Jim and Andy
Jim Carrey really shines in The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, The Grinch, Bruce Almighty, Yes! Man and both Sonic the Hedgehog films
AS IN MANY of his comedic roles, they let him go off script a little bit just to see where he goes with it. In past interviews with the rest of the cast they said it was so hard to work through the scenes. They said it was so hard to keep a straight face and not start laughing when he would just throw something into the scene. They all said they had a REALLY good time making this movie because of how goofy he was. Fun Fact... Because he's so good with impersonations he's not allowed to make ANY VOICES around his family's especially NOT Jack Nicholsons! It's a shame that he's left the industry, but many people do who are so typecast like he is. #NYGenXBIKERLady
You know he overlooked a very obvious loophole I'm surprised a lawyer like him didn't see. Don't answer. He can't lie. That doesn't mean he has to speak.
I hate when people talk about how some actors don't 'act' they just play themselves in every movie. But people like Carry is just the same but is exciting and enjoyable.
For some very early Jim Carrey you should watch Earth Girls Are Easy (1988), it's a fun movie with a terrific cast. For an excellent father & lawyer see the classic To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).
Growing up means realising Jerry is the good guy. Fletcher only began to set his priorities straight after a day of literal magic. It’s implied he wasn’t a good dad even before the divorce, which attributed to the divorce
Jerry's claw is so wonderfully done. You just can't help but feel uncomfortable cringy. Jerry was a wonderful guy, but he just didn't have the connection. No matter who you are or how wonderful you are, if the connection isn't there then there wil always be something feeling off (on both sides, Jerry knew himself as well that is why he stepped aside as easily)

Which means that the prenup is double null and void since its a contract and it was signed to take effect post marriage, if the marriage is null and void so is the pre-nup which means all she gets its child support and thats for the kids.
I'm old enough to have watched Jim Carey when he was on In Living Color, which aired at nearly midnight on the second of three channels we had in NZ at the time XD I saw this at the movies with friends, along with many of his other movies because back then any movie he put out was "must see". You’re so right. He was such a good guy and that made him even better.
Yeah he was surprisingly likable! Boring but likable and also reliable
Almost like Stu in Mrs Doubtfire, he never does anything particularly wrong, but you love to hate him purely because you're rooting for our hero.

Jim Carrey ad-libbed a ton of the lines in this movie. You can see how his mind worked as he did it in the end-credit bloopers.
I felt really bad for Jerry honestly, yeah he went a little fast but he seemed like a nice understanding guy

My compesated by being silly like Jimmy Carey in this movie, he even used to play the claw with me 🥰
The bloopers were as funny as the movie itself I think.
One of the funniest movies EVER!
Me, Myself and Irene is my favorite JC movie.
