Kenya Airways: Fall of the Pride [Part 4]

  • #FallOfThePride Part 4:
In the nearly ten-year decline of Kenya Airways, few decisions have had as big an impact on the airline’s profitability as the choices it made on fuel hedging. Fuel hedging is a contractual tool used to mitigate the risks of the volatile oil market. KQ used this means to acquire their fuel and the strategy may have worked against them. The strategy contributed to at least 25% of their losses.

take this example, I was booking a flight just yesterday to Dar. the mobile application on the KQ website was so pathetic such that 45 mins later i still had not booked a flight. a further follow-up on their socials to inquire was rudely replied and told to book at an agent and that the said person cant handle technical issues as mobile booking. I went to Expedia website and booked Rwanda Air to Dar in 6 mins. now you tell me how will they ever make a profit.

@@larrypage7753 i do agree tech fails. I am a programmer with15 years of experience in web app dev and I know tech fails most of the time especially integrated web apps like the airline and hotel booking platforms. but when it fails it is prudent for the airlines to create proper customer care measures to ensure seamless business continuity. otherwise, the company will be losing prospective clients out of arrogant staff who don't seem to care about the image of the business.

My dad worked for the defunct East African Airways before transitioning into Kenya Airways...He retired in 1988 and died 10 years later without receiving any dues. My elderly mom wonders what happened to the compensation, considering, Uganda and Tanzania paid their EAA workers, several years ago. It is very sad to hear such stories coming from Kenya Airways, considering that my dad was an honest and diligent employee and brought me up with values of integrity, diligence and care for humanity. I have many memories of Kenya Airways, growing up ,however the most memorable is my very first flight to london at the age of 13 years old when my dad flew his family for a two week holiday.

It's really sad to see the Kenyan people watch as their pride becomes a show of shame and disdain due to pervasive mismanagement and corruption by a select few. I weep because I have seen this happen with our own defunct Nigeria Airways... Same story, same path unfolding. I had a very bad experience flying with KQ from Nairobi to Lagos last year(cost me an extra $500 right at the airport) and I said to myself "if this kind of customer service continues there just might not be a National carrier anymore". I didn't even know this level of corruption was already taking place and it was barely surviving. I see Dan Okwiri as someone who is very passionate but the unfortunate thing is that such people wouldn't be allowed to steer the ship because of their selfish ambitions and corrupt practices. I suggest they stop wasting tax payers funds and sell off the entire asset of KQ and let everyone move to their "tents". Because ordinarily it shouldn't be standing with all the monumental losses incured if not for the government still pumping funds into it. These funds can be channelled into other things such as education and healthcare which will ameliorate the plights of the citizens with greater impact.

It is really unfortunate that an airline that had so much promise and potential for the African Continent has succomb to incompetance and corruption. All they really needed to do was follow the Ethiopian Airlines model and adapt it to their target market. Or at least partner with Ethiopian Airlines in a serious manner.
It's really a shame to the continent that this happened this way.
KQ should not look to die but to revamp itself, rebuild it's image and services, and should be the forefront for the battle against corruption and incompetent leaders placed at the senior level of ogranizations.

    1. There was a lot of repeated footage throughout the documentary. Maybe get more footage or work around the lack of footage.
    2. The music drowns out people who are talking. At times it was very hard to make out what was being said. This can be fixed with a simple gain staging.

very pathetic,i always remember how Sebastian MIKOZS the former CEO bought a LAND and a car for his body guard and driver,a security officer at Kenya airways, helped him build a house and bought him a because he wanted to make sure that he keep top secret on how he had placed a foreigner in each department so as to pilfer everything.see here Kenyans, the CEO had a finance expert from Poland, ahead of supply chain, head of HR from same land just a few and you noted that with that kind of net work Irene lempaka the current head of supply chain just promoted by the current CEO Allan kilavuka looted everything.as we talk Irene who is the product of Titus naikuni is a very rich woman who has benefited from the regime of Sebastian, all tenders awarded during this time belongs to most directors who left KQ like the Bridgette imbuga HR and Francis musila who has shares at AFS company that makes cartels ground KQ equipment so that KQ can hire from AFS on overstated invoices and kickbacks.a thing well known by Michael Joseph who ignored to act,all dry stores has been given to third party NAS and even catering that has prompted to the loss of jobs of KQ staff who worked on those sections, look here, how can KQ award NAS a tender of laundry while it has its own machines of laundry ,KQ has its own lorries but most transport/equipment of catering and facilitating of flights is done by NAS and other ground handlers belonging to these directors and well known politicians and cabinet secretaries in this country ,generally that is how KQ employees loses jobs to third parties.the current canteen in KQ belongs to anzaya mbithe, bridgette imbuga and latiffa cherono who is at coca cola bottlers after she left KQ.LIKE FOR EXAMPLE TEA ALONE WITHOUT SNACKS KQ DOES A CHEQUE OF OVER 6 MILLION SHILLINGS FOR JUST TECHNICAL STAFF LOCATED AT OCC OFFICES[LESS THAN 150 STAFF] most of the outstation managers were planted in those jobs purposely to help loot.look at outstation like south africa tom ogendo and the manager who has been there for years since titus naikuni has been doing ticket fraud,if a customer can not comply with the demands of these individuals you find that some of cargo has been delayed for long and is the same reason why most customers run away from KQ,these outstation managers target weights, you realize that half revenues per flight goes to these individuals and when you point on them you get kicked out just like the way a staff was kicked out recently and lost all his years.this is a story well known by the chairman Michael Joseph and HR Evelyn munyoki who always ignore the matters and even to a level of forcing the police to arrest such staff who report corruption matters.
mr Allan kilavuka and the cabinet secretary matiangi force to give top jobs to those who are not qualified so as to continue looting the company and honestly this blame goes to Michael Joseph who appointed kilavuka and allowed kilavuka to appoint head of security Bernard oganga who knows nothing about security but corruption.he cannot even write a report.further te same same kilavuka and matiangi force the company to continue keeping Gordon anyimu who has brought KQ to its knees.
At the end of the day the chairman will blame himself by the way kenyans will react after his term ends.he pleases the HR chief who is promoting the culture of reckless sacking,he pleases the legal head and team that has even a small matter that can be solved by company many cases have been directed to court and so costed KQ a lot of finances unlike in the past regimes, the legal team appoint law firms with their own friends then over charge the company at the end, basically,it is many businesses within one big business called KQ.
Michael joseph doesn't know that at the end of the day we Kenyans does not know Allan kilavuka,Evelyn munyoki and matiangi who mislead him and are looking for business opportunities on their interests in expense of KQ and tax payers.
all what we say has costed a staff career, job, security, safety and freedom not to forget family suffering.
honestly michael joseph has agreed to be misled by the CEO who has no capability to get KQ from these dark moments.
most heads in KQ especially in HR mislead the management and mostly delay tactics.when michael reported to KQ he had enough men to help Turner KQ to profit making but clever thieves known as Bridgette imbuga, francis musila the son of the arrogant politician David musila,Boniface onyango, the likes of Gordon anyimu, irene lempaka and others like tom ogendo dictated the chairman to sack people like Sammy chepkwony the former and strict KQ HR director,Morris musyoki who within couple on months eliminated corruption and brought to stability at the ground operations that is the back borne of KQ,as junior as he was Michael Joseph authorized for his sacking according to the current head of security who is dictating the police using kenya airways name to arrest morris, simply because he has streamlined most sections in KQ A THING THAT CARTELS IN GROUND OPERATIONS AND HR did not like.actually the head of security has warned to use government powers to continue with corruption and if he is sacked he will kill someone.THE FORMER HEAD OF SECURITY SOLOMON ONANGE WHO WAS EQUAL TO THE JOB WAS THROWN OUT TO BRING IN THIS BERNARD OGANGA WHO IS THE ALLAN KILAVUKA MAN AND CHEST THUMPING THAT HE CAN KILL SOME ONE.
The story is long but basically KQ losses almost same amount to what it gets meaning that half of revenues goes to cartels,no wonder one person said that some people are misusing the powers that the president has given to them and leading to abuse of powers and offices .
The chairman need to talk to the president and see the way forward of eliminating these chest thumping CEO,security and other company rogue managers..
there is a security officer who chest thump that he was brought to KQ by RAILA AMOLO ODINGA THAT HE WAS HIS GATE MAN AND BODY GUARD,RECENTLY HE TRAVELED TO IVORY COAST WITHOUT TRAVELING DOCUMENTS.WITHOUT VISA AND PASSPORT,ESCORTING MILLIONS OF MONEY WHICH WE UNDERSTAND THAT IT WAS A DEAL TO STEAL THE MONEY THE PLAN WAS BETWEEN KENYA AIRWAYS AND SOME IVORY COAST AIRPORT MEN WHICH SAW KENYA AIRWAYS LOSS MILLIONS ON THE SCANDAL.WHEN HE GOT ARRESTED BY IVORY COAST POLICE,THE SAID FAMILY RESCUED HIM AND FINALLY HE CAME BACK,TAKEN TO SOMALI TO HIDE BY KQ AND FINALLY DEPLOYED TO HR,CEO OFFICE AS SECURITY OFFICER THEN AFTER THAT MOOD WAS OVER GOT PROMOTED AS INVESTIGATING OFFICER WHICH HAS SEEN MOST KQ PROPERTY INCLUDING LAPTOPS GET STOLEN,THIS MAN IS GERARD LIMO.
ALONG STORY BUT JUST TO SAY DICTATORSHIP FROM THE GOVERNMENT HAS LED TO THE FALL OF KQ AND THE PRIDE.generally this security head oganga is very thick upstairs.

A wise sage long ago said, " Manage the people, the top line and the bottom line will follow". The wise sage passed away a few months later having built the world's most valuable company today that we know as Apple.
KQ should manage the people (competency, culture and numbers), the services they provide (without compromise) and the bottom line will follow.
A company performs better with an empathetic CEO but in times of change, CEOs that are least empathetic performs best in steering leadership of a company. Mikosz was best at Polish Airlines because he fired and rehired, cut beuracracies and his vision was to carryon with his tough stand at KQ thus bringing on his team. Lakini we all know Kenya is different, "toa kitu kidogo babaa"," huyu mtu ni wetu", " ukituguza tunaenda kortini"," Kenya ina wenyewe, hatuendangi hivi"- to sum it all, we adopted the worst of morals and 'the priviledge handicap' that came with independence and we seem not to break that cycle. Eventually Mikosz left after frustrations that came with the job. Alan has a difficult task of choosing the blue pill or the red one. He has to choose between a cash bill or press the reset button to the past with the knowledge that he has. And as Elon Musk, the man that has privatized the space industry says, " If given the choice between the blue pill or the red pill, always go with the red pill." Richard Brandson of Virgin Airlines says," Always look after your employees, take a keen interest in them, and you will succeed".
My thought is that the employees there already know the troubles ailing KQ. By employee, I mean the overlooked ones, the competents and most important ones the one that are least priviledged in any way. Mckinsey knew this well and they knew more about KQ from this approach than any independent study could have found. Deloitte too has the map and if none of the two can assist the carrier from its bed, it's a high time to rethink KQ.
My hope is that Alan is fit for the uphill battle and being as competent as he is, (very competent), our best wishes are with him.... Nothing is impossible
