- Since some of you asked what my essentials are for my overland setup, this is what I run and I’m going to walk you through it as I load my truck for the next adventure. Cheap budget ideas for the average or beginner overlander
Good job showing your gear. It is simplistic and functional. I don't have a pickup. I have a 4 door Wrangler. I also need my back seats. So, I have more limited space available. I saw a couple of things that I don't have that I should have and saw that you don't have a couple that I have and I probably don't need. The swag bag is too bulky for me so I sleep in a small tent or in the Jeep for a short trip and in a larger tent for a hunting trip. I carry the tent and all the light stuff like sleeping bag, blankets, sheets and clothes in by Roof Bag on my roof rack. I like your channel because you don't have all the latest and greatest stuff that I will never buy because it is expensive. I also like your channel because your trips don't just go on a road but show interesting places and you give the history. Thanks for that. By the way, my Wrangler is not a Rubicon but a Sport with a lift and larger heavy duty off road tires. I don't need a Rubicon with lockers to visit 90% of the interesting places in Arizona and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Hi Cody (I hope that is how you spell your name) Anyways I stumbled on your video couple weeks ago and was very calmed by it and enjoyed the content, music, the history and the not talking and focusing on yourself all of the time. Oh and how could I forget Mila... she's sooo good and you can tell there is a connection. I'm watching a few of your videos at a time to be caught up. You're a very blessed man to have a beautiful wife as well. I am blessed as well with my husband being a great and safe off roader. I'm a rockhound girl and love nature. I have to say you inspire me to go to those places and if you're interested I know some cool places in California where I find my treasures that you and the Mrs. and Mila might want to go. I know how & where to find treasures and I keep a wish travel list for us. I used to have a trained kitty on a leash anytime outside never left her behind named Boobies. She wasn't fond of the truck ride but she loved camping. We recently lost her so it'll be tough but we gotta move on. Maybe someday soon we can venture out to meet and enjoy some outdoors and history together in your group. You all seem cool and I would love to see my husband in a caravan for the 1st time instead of with just me! He's been offroading for 25+ years. I can do some mean camp cooking (from a family of chefs) and I enjoy that as well. Been enjoying nature 45 years or more. Keep up the great videos and we'll keep enjoying!! Ruth D and Charles
W.D.O. you nailed it. I am embarassed to admit that I fell into the trap of building out a vehicle, spending way more than necessary on gear and upgrades that I "might" use instead of focusing on what I normally do and the essentials. I kept telling myself Ithat I'd need all those upgrades for my trip to Alaska. Turns out I never used most of that gear.
It happens man. I did too with my first build, that’s why I’m making these videos to put out info on the stuff I’ve already had experience with, and what I’ve made mistakes on. I could care less what people spend their money on, but if I can help some people spend less I’m happy to do it!
I love the no frills review. I am so tired of ultra expensive gear that is not that good. I have a Partner Steel Stove and a 30 year old Coleman. The flame control on the Coleman is better and is about a tenth of the cost.
Your practicality is refreshing.
It’s crazy what these influencers are pushing us normal people to buy when they receive this stuff for free. The only sponsors I will take are those who offer a budget product, I won’t push anything I wouldn’t buy myself. It’s discouraging new people from doing this thinking they need all the new stuff!
White Dog Overland Is For The People 🐐
I am speaking on behalf of Jack; He is right next to me. I am Jacks dad. I take jack on these adventures of Arizona as well. He loves the history of Arizona! I found you the other day and showed Jack your channel, and he subscribed. He watches and I do as well. Jack and I are trying to show people around the world how beautiful and historic Arizona is. More people need to know more about the beauty and history of Arizona. They need to realize we are much more than just a desert. Maybe we will meet up sometime on the trail since we travel in the same circle. Shawn and Jack, San Manuel.
Thank for you joining the channel! Seems like we have a few things in common, one being the love for our amazing state. I’m not far from you all either, just on the other side of the Catalina’s. The cascabel valley is one of my favorite roads to drive through.
I'm curious, any skiing in Arizona? Yes I mean snow and yes I am serious lol. 😅
very informative for a beginner . Thank you
Carry a bucket in my trash bag as well. It’s a lot my toilet, although I tend to still be a “log pooper”. I constantly reconfigure my situation on my rig, it never ends. Thanks for the great ideas, you knowledge is appreciated.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Cody! So the truck is fixed now? Got it back to trail ready? I think the last video it was in you needed to take it down for a bit of maintenance...
Good job on the video! I think allot of people can benefit from the information and reasoning you presented.
You're pretty Savvy for a youngster... LOL! I'm 60, so cut me some slack! When I started camping, hunting, fishing on my own back in 1978, I'd go to garage sales, swap meets, etc. to buy gear second hand... I guess nowadays Facebook Marketplace and the like are the equivalent of that? Gotta know what you're looking for and what condition it's in, or if you're skilled enough to repair... Keeps you from paying full price for stuff... Maybe that's not a "thing" now... I bought an old white gas Coleman stove for $10.00 like that. Ran it for 30 years, even bought a conversion to propane for it later on, eventually passed it on to a Step Son along with some other gear I was no longer using. He was looking to start his own collection of camping gear. What can I say? That stove didn't owe me anything... Anyway, I guess my point is there are people who dove into camping, etc. and no longer use their gear, so they sell it cheap... Some don't, but deals can be found...
Can't wait to see the next trail video! Take Care, Bill
Thanks Bill! I try to keep it cheap and easy, like most people. The tundra just completed a 700 miles journey and it will be posted this Sunday!
This is great, regular guy, not overbuilt rig. Keep it up 👊
Thank you brother 👊🏼
Great setup and love that you keep budget in mind! I do a similar thing with a bucket for trash. Swapped over to something called a Vittles Vault. Basically just adds a nice screw on lid with seal to top of a bucket and keep the stink of week old trash in. Made to store pet food, but works great for trash and pretty budget friendly. Figured I would pass it along. Subbed up and like your style!
I’ve heard of those, that’s a damn good idea thanks for sharing!
@@Whitedogoverland you really can forget your trash in there and keep it in your garage for weeks without knowing it….I learned that the hard way lol. God did it stink when I finally remembered to dump it. A little bleach and water did the trick for making it like new again.
Love the budget friendly stuff. So many RUclipsrs have $1000s of dollars spent on pretty much the same stuff you have. I don’t think i will go rooftop tent as i use my raptor for a lot of the faster runs/trails. A Gazelle tent has been a good way for us to camp out of it without converting my whole bed.
I just really enjoy the hand me down stuff and second hand purchases, way less buyers remorse. Totally unnecessary to buy brand new. Those gazelles are awesome, if I was to ground tent camp in my pickup I’d definitely buy one
idk if i overdid it but i think i got the essentials and having a 1000 watts inverter with induction cooker is a game changer for me and now i got a 1kw with mini microwave freaking awesome with warming coffee and food during cold camping
If you can afford it, have no buyers remorse and it makes your life easier out camping, I’d say not over done at all.
@@Whitedogoverland true i wanted a tundra tho for my alcan to anchorage trip i dont want to sleep on a tent with bears and shit
❤ the practicality of your load out. Turns out you don’t need $100k in gear to go camping.
You sure don’t, just gotta get out and have fun!
Bucket idea in the spare tire trash pack is a good idea, will be using that lol
We always carried a full-size shovel for when you really have serious digging to do. But we didn't have a winch either. Lot of my stuff was Military surplus buys.
I really need a bigger shovel, need to find somewhere to mount it to the exterior. My dad has given me loads of old surplus over the years, great gear!
@@Whitedogoverland My first guess would be weld or bolt some strap or clamp brackets to your bumper. We usually just thru it in the pick-up bed but you have a lot going on in there.
After I wheeled a few trips I upgraded my suspension and it completely changed the overland experience, total game changer. I wasted a lot money on a lithion battery as I really only power my frig with it. If I were to do it again I would do your setup.
That agm battery is weigh (see what I did there?) heavier than lithium. Get more electric items and utilize that battery.
I just enjoy the simplicity of not hard mounting my agm, they’re cheap and will last years if you treat them right.
I have had my ICECO VL45 for almost 4 years now. It is a great fridge/freezer.
I’m happy to hear that, that’s the fridge they’re sending
@@Whitedogoverland I get it to temp at the house and put it in my truck on ECO mode. I have camped in a single place for 4 days with it plugged into the truck outlet, never running the engine, and my truck started right up on the morning of day 5. I like your power pack option better and it is on my list.
@@IAmWoodyI don’t know if I’d want to push my luck doing that. That sounds pretty iffy.
Firecrate USA makes an adapter to run those Amazon pumps on your reliance water jug. It works good and it's cheap
I'm actually pretty close to your set up! Truck, Deckd system, Twin compressor, 52L fridge and store thing almost exactly as you do! Nice!
I ran an AGM 105 amp/hr battery with the alligator to 12v cable like you have but went to a Jackery 1000. Much lighter but my Jackery won't jump start my truck. Hopefully it will never be a problem.
You can always get a jump pack, I carry one just incase!
@Whitedogoverland I just got on a couple days ago!
@imbdileva they work phenomenal, usually get about 8 starts out of my gooloo!
Who is your camper shell manufacturer that thing is awesome?
100% agree. Less is more. More $$ doesn’t mean better. #makeoverlandingcheapagain
You should try a pre filter on the snorkel it's crazy how well they work you'd utilize it with what you do & RIP to that chair 🤣
Pre filter ordered, this last trip kicked up some wild dust!
Love all your content but these one are my favorites. Hope you do more.
Might have to start!
Like you see/hear you go more in depth on your extra battery setup for your fridge . What you use and connect as far as cables, inverters , charging etc.
Would love to see more detail about how you run electricity / your battery setup!
I have a very old video on it, might have to make a new one!
@@Whitedogoverland it’d be much appreciated!
My boyfriend said "thank you for the ideas for budget gear" I go sometimes but he's alone on most of the overlanding trips.😊
Tell him I’m glad to help!
Thanks for the video. I'm getting ready to buy a new pickup to use for overlanding and this is a good place to start looking for gear to outfit it
GL I hope you dont mind scratches on a new truck!
Good luck and most importantly have fun!
Awesome info, thanks. This channel is gold
Thanks!!
Swag the way to go...can't beat CrashPad....I have a lot of their gear...this good video.
Thank you, yeah swags are great. Beats the traditional pop up forsure
wow look at those pinstripes! This truck is a real deal not a garage queen.
Arizona trails are not forgiving on the paint!
Great video man always appreciate your perspective .
Thanks brother!
Great job son! The only thing that's missing is Mila...
Great video. I just moved from Ohio to New Mexico. Until I meet some new friends it appears I will be out there oftentimes solo. I’ve learned I can purchase some “disaster insurance” (not sure what to call it really). But, let’s say I leave my vehicle for a trail hike & break my leg. As long as I have my Garmin InReach on me (currently don’t own one) I can message for helicopter assistance. Do you pay for anything like that?
I don’t have anything like that, I probably should for solo trips. If you’re a big hiker I’d highly suggest it. It’s also advantageous if you run those with some other friends on the trail, you can track each other so no one could get lost.
Great video with no nonsense awesome suggestions! Like and subscribe engaged.
Appreciate that!
Just bought that same AllTop air compressor last week. Went to use it and it literally died after about 20 seconds of using it.
No way! What a bummer, cheap Chinese product, it either lasts or it doesn’t
Damn son when did you get so buff?
Haha chocolate milk and hot dogs my man!
I have toyed around with putting a skid plate on my 2018 Rav 4,adventure. I do a bit of off off roading. Did you put one on your Rav?
I did, but I haven’t shown it off yet. It’s nothing special, 16ga bent aluminum. I’ll cover it in a video soon
@@Whitedogoverland awesome! Thank you
What happened to your ARB rear bag?
I’m sorry, which bag are you referring to? Not sure I have an arb bag… I might be missing something haha
First aide kit and recovery gear?
Damn, I didn’t even touch on that. Might have to make a separate video for beginners!
@@Whitedogoverland Thanks
Past 10 or 15 mph, the engine bay is flooded with cold air.
Just because SOME Australians are sleeping on the ground is no reason for me to do it. lol
You’re not wrong, they make swag cots. Lol
