This brought to mind some wisdom my old driving instructor once said: "If someone flips you off for no reason out on the road, and you really want to piss them off: Just smile, and politely wave back. They will then be absolutely livid, because they failed in getting an angry reaction out of you/making you stoop to their level." Wise advice she gave, and it does also sometimes give trolls a run for their money.

If you’re being trolled by someone who comments mean things, for the love of god just don’t reply to them. You’re just doing what they want you to do, reacting to what they’re saying. It’s best just to ignore them, then they’ll stop.

But it was kind of weird system, because clever and useful comments (most voted / more agreeable) were hidden. So they changed it back to the rating system. This happened like a year or two ago?

As someone who also makes youtube videos, one thing I have found that I think is fascinating is that if you reply to a troll in a nice way, MANY times they will actually back off and sometimes even apologize for coming off as mean. I think it is because they are expecting a fight back, that's what they are used to and want. But if you reply with kindness, it makes them do a bit of self-reflecting and feel bad. Human behavior is very interesting.

I think that there are two separate classes of 'trolls' the sadist who are just trying to be mean and get attention from leaving rude comments, and the funny troll that is just out to annoy like Rickrolling or like back in the days of 'the game'. But then there are people who may not enjoy a certain video and leave a comment voicing their opinion only to get brutally attacked by the sheep like mindset of 'loyal' fans for contradicting their fave youtuber. This is more from the fans of daily vloggers i find tho.

This, and cases where the word "trolling" is used as a way to leave an argument (in the academic sense of the word), appears to be an increasing problem upon the internet.
I'm a troll that likes to make people laugh at RTU, because I know he can handle it. I don't troll people I don't think can handle it. Usually people I think it'd be funny to mess with or who I think need to be taken down a notch. Like when they're overconfident, they need to get bullied a little.

i love trolls, they have helped my other channel grow substantially. i tend to play along with whatever these trolls throw at me. whenever possible, give them an even bigger reason to troll.
youtube doesn't care about trolls. the algorithm only detects any comments (good or bad) as an engagement point.
more trolls = more replies = more engagement = youtube recommends your content to wider audience = more views = more money.
it's a win win win situation for everyone.

I used to fight against trolls, day and night. It was my mission to protect my territory and my friends. Then I looked at it scientifically and noticed a pattern. Every time I'd say something, they'd say something back. I say something, so they say something, so I say something, so they say something. But If I just rolled my eyes and stopped responding, they'd shut up, which is what I wanted in the first place. They might think they'd "won" by getting the last word in, but I'll just let them think that. It turns out the only way to win is to not play.
