Wow , looks a high driving position - but if you have it on full air lift 👍 Only trouble is , it's too full of electronics. If any of that fails whilst you're in the middle of nowhere.. you're in trouble. Great video though.
Alan Davies is correct. As an off-road driver trainer here in Australia the rule is simple, if you can't walk it you can't drive it. Well, you can drive part of it until you get washed downstream!!! Whilst LR says it is 900mm wading depth I have found, from a lot of experience in Discovery and Defender there is no real issue going above as long as you get a good bow wave. You will notice the Land Rover air intake position. It's not an accident of design, when you create your bow wave properly the water actually runs below the intake. In your case, it is a fairly moot point as you have fitted a snorkel. Another item I would recommend for deep water crossings is a blind across the front. This helps create a bow wave and stops water being sprayed around by the fan and reduces the likely hood of water getting into bits it shouldn't orta get into.
Thanks for the comment. When you select wading mode the new Defender has active air intake flaps on the radiator that actually close when wading. Also the raised air intake does according to Land Rover not help wading depth - its to take in clean air apparently !
Yes the walking method is a basic rule and take a 3rd leg with you to help support yourself in fast flowing water. Also gives a potential to feel for hidden surprises like soft sand or boulders strewn on a river bed.

This is not directly related to your wading which is super cool. However I hit a deer in my P400 and I was probably down to 5 mph when I hit it. It rolled over and got up and then walked away. However the doe hit the passenger side (in the USA) fog light and just above that. Guess what when I looked at it first the damage wasn’t visible at all. Nothing broken, no broken plastic etc. however when I looked down I noticed that coolant was leaking from the radiator behind the fog light. Luckily I was less than a mile from home and was able to get home. Before I got home i got the low coolant warning and within a minute or so in the garage all the coolant was gone. Now it’s getting repaired. However, the dealer tells me it’s one of the inter coolers. Please be careful not to hit or nudge anything around that area. I was nervous when you were wading as if you had hit a stone or something around that area you may have fared as I did. But I was relieved you were ok. Since you share lots of good information, I wanted to pass this along as a thank you for all you do. I am not sure if you can ask your mate Mr Skywalker if he knows why they installed those so low to the ground in such a vehicle. Cheers
Couple of questions. What’s happened to the bit of trim that’s missing? Did you use the Wade sensor and if you did, any footage of it? If your going to make 900mm decals, won’t this be dependent on wheels/ suspension (air/spring)?
Hi - the bit of trim has gone to the factory to get the paint colour match for our new colour coded door handles ! Its a good question - the wade sensing currently uses the underside of the mirror so does not actually sense depth but distance from the underside of the mirror - this makes sense as this gives you a position of the air intake regardless of suspension height / wheel size etc.... all you car about is how close you are to the air intake... so a fixed line on the body would be fine !

Saves Tyler getting the power washer out - only nice and clean half-way up the sides though so you'll need to go a bit deeper next time...... The Stig will never talk to you again!
Yes i think the Stig was a bit upset that why he delete my "hey stig" voice prompt....
so you think that crossing this peaceful little river makes this discovery a very capable off roader?
Well it was nearly a Meter deep.... thats a tick box for me !
Yes, Simon - a graphic to put on the side for wading depth would be cool. You could do seperate ones across the L/R range too and for the other models of vehicles you cater for. Thumbs up from me.......
Just need to work out a design. Maybe throw out a design competition out there (Like Ineos) but the prize could be a set of graphics for the winners vehicle.....
Good idea... just off for some legal advice...
Isn't the wading depth to the bottom edge of the air intake?
@@johnwillett4086 Yes, but having a graphic is just a style choice. Same as with the bonnet graphics etc. It's more about style over function. Just a bit of fun and individualism.
Simon, you failed to comply with the first rule of Green Laning - Never go solo, in case of problems.
Hi - I had a friend on standby
@@L663 why not mention this in the video?
@@R16KNK Yes i should have really - also we did look at winch points we could use.. I should have removed the winch cover in preparation in case it was needed. We did make sure we had the winch controller with us and charged up also.
Did water get inside the car?
No it was dry - but the inside of the doors did fill with water !
I tried this today, and chickened out!
What vehicle were you in ? how high was the water.... I think I will do it again when we have the Defender back as the footage first time was not that good.... really need to have a couple of us do it so we could pull each other out !
@@L663 A Ford Ranger, it was probably at its lowest with the dry weather, but still looked deep. It was just me and my Dachshund who wouldn’t have been much help if things went wrong. Some rocks below the surface to watch out for too. I'll go in shorts and crocs next time, if I can walk it, I can drive it!
Whereabouts in the fosse way? Just north of you.
about 5 miles South of Kemble airfield.
@@L663 Brilliant, thanks. I used to be a flying instructor there so know that bit well.
Didn’t break down!! Good result for any Land Rover
lol, not accurate, the voice command disconnected at the end.
Did any water get in.
Ironically after wading the wade sensors packed up - water got into the door connectors ! but that was the only problem.
I think supposed to check the depth of the entire route, not just a single point.
Oh well !
whereabouts in Fosse way is this?
Its about 5 miles south of Kemble airfield on the old fosse way
Why are you worried about how deep the water is, you have a snorkel ?
According to land rover its not a snorkel but more of a raised air intake for getting clean air....also my car is petrol and that worries me slightly with the ignition side of things..
A Land Rover dealer told me that the 900 mark is just below the point at which the Defender will start to float. Go deeper and you risk floating away.
@@johnwillett4086 With the winch fitted i recon the extra weight will get me to 1000mm !!
Stigy’s a Boat 😂👍
Did water come inside
No and yes - after this test the wade sensors failed - water seemed to get into the door connector.
Water got inside the doors but this is supposed to happen
The inside of the car was dry !
The new Defender is a beast.
At least the wheels are clean now 🤪
Hi Alan - happy new year.... yes a full underbody wash !
Deep wading? Did I miss something?
Gosh bee 🐝 carfull
This is the start of your electric problems, get ready for some big garage bills. Get rid of it and get a proper Defender and then you could do some real off-roading.
Cheers
License plate says the stig
Yes this is why we call the Defender "THE STIG"
Did you think the dash cam was god?
God... not it was not a divine power.... but it is very good yes !
I have a new dashcam - a Nextbase to do a comparison test on next....
I am not paid or given any items free i have to add...
@@L663 Thanks, I’ll look forward to you comparison. 😊
Wow
Can you go to Ireland and give me up a range Rover please
If you want to see a great UK water crossing, watch this video from JK Overland - ruclips.net/video/7GJScRJlSNs/видео.html - it's a great watch (but I wouldn't do it).
Stuart T
Check out the latest Harry's Farm video at about 8.59 wading in the new Defender.

Did i beat him... also i did mine live but hats of to Harry he does great videos !
It was a trending video. Everyone wondering if it’s a good farm Vehicle.
Just drive
5:40 for the actual video.
Yes this cuts out all the waffle !
The stick selection is dodgy
Rather brave knowing how useless the electrics are on these things
Does the T in your name stand for "Thomas"... doubting Thomas ?
@@L663 haha very good...nah it's just bitter bitter experience of all things Land Rover, lovely image but appalling engineering and customer service..
One of the worse reviews
I guess that is better than actually being the worst review...hold on a moment.. this was not meant to be a review !

defender????? that is definitely not a real defender.....that is one expensive and unrelliable piece of shit. Buy a bronco, a toyota or wait for the greandier instead of wasting your money on this useless piece of garbage, one the other hand, if you call it a discovery, it's a totally differend thing. Tata bought land rover for this????
So the original was cheap ? it was more expensive and still is than a japanese pickup of the same year.....The Grenadier is interesting yes but still a way off... the Bronco... that is one cool beast !
@@L663 defenders have always bad surprise boxes in terms of relliability and this was land rover's opportunity to correct it and bring something great and better than a land cruiser but instead they decided to build a luxury soccer mom suv!!! it doesn't matter if it has great technology for 4x4 capabilities if it won't perform as the rugged former defender or something similar to the land cruisers.....they blew it and it's very sad since I was expecting to buy the first great defender of my life.....but we got a discovery with a defender badge. Not even if I become a lunatic will I ever think of buying something like this...ever!!! lots of problems coming with this softy.....
@@L663 when I say land cruisers I'm really talking about the 70 series which were the direct competition to the defender.
@@L663 I just sold my last 70 series a couple of weeks ago and I think I'm going for the ford bronco!!!! I also own a mahindra scorpio pik up and I believe it's way better for offroading that the new defender!!!! But the greandier is growing rapidly inside of me!!!
