It's basically Last Chancers. A "This is a suicide mission that requires the very best to pull off. Unfortunately all we have is you." kind of situation.
that the best thing about penal legions they are literally a tide of bodys you can throw at the problem and hope it will go away. the worst is no one is going to miss them and at best they succeed
I think that is what makes this very exciting. A penal legion means we have complete control in what our character is like and adds a depth to the game that I think we would miss out on if it was just an astartes chapter
It is great to see you guys reacting to this particular cinematic, and since your friend didn't answer your questions, I shall do my best to grant clarity! - Ed is right, Nurgle is to blame for the green gas as it is spreading what is called "The Walking Pox", a devastating plague that rots the body and corrupts the soul, turning regular non-faithful humans into mindless Poxwalkers - Nurgle's Puppets of death and decay. Living humans or dead corpses doesn't matter. It can afflict you both through wounds, breathing, and broken morale. Poxwalkers come in hordes upon hordes, and they never stop pursuing their targets as Nurgle continues to control them with his Godlike powers. - Indeed the characters you will be playing are Criminals. The large guy was an Ogryn; an Abhuman that is essentially very strong yet not very smart. The lady with the black hair is a disgraced Sister of Battle. The Guardsman-looking guy is most likely a criminal from the Imperial Guard, and finally we have the black guy who is indeed a Psyker, and I am sure you already know those are VERY powerful. - The Spikey guardsmen-looking guys are Chaos Cultists, most likely these ones are devoted to Nurgle, hence why they are not affected by the Walking Pox, and they are your run-of-the-mill humans that band together to worship the Dark Gods. Imagine Imperial Guards but covered in spikes. - The backstory for this particular game is quite interesting: You are a criminal who is being sent to a Hive City, a gigantic city big enough to house millions or even billions of people, all living in a hierarchy. Communication has been cut off, reports of a mysterious gas, muttering guardsmen with spikey armour and something dark and terrifying lurking in the shadows beneath the mountains of industrious architecture. Your mission is simple: You get an objective, you either complete the objective or you die, and they send in someone to replace you and try their luck. The Far Future is Grim indeed. I hope I was of some use, and I wish you a lovely time until your next reaction video!
oh my gosh Skipper thank you for this! your info answered everything I think we wanted cleared up. I am interested in knowing nurgle's game plan when the game comes out
@@GMineo Nurgle's game plan is what it always is, no matter where his corruption takes root; Citadels, Planets, Hive Cities, Space Barges, Warfronts, Political houses - His endgoal is to continue the endless cycle of Death and Rot. From those that die of his Magic and Influence, whether it is through his plagues or his armies, life is created; Mold, Fungus, Flies and Maggots. These are all corrupted versions of Life, and it brings him so much joy. To him, these people in the hive city that die and rot are given what he considers is the greatest gift of all: the gift of putrid and fetid decay.
this game is about what is called a penal legion: these are people that are criminals, sinners and that are sent on suicide missions to earn redemption in the service of the god emperor. The missions members of penal legions are sent on could range from assisting an inquisitor to investigate a genestealer presence pon a world but they could also be sent in to stop the summoning of a greater demon for instance. Penal legions are carried, these are all kinds of people with different stories, skills and knowledge that have to complete their mission since it is their only hope to stay alive for a while longer
Interesting! We didn't mention it in the video but it seemed very similar to suicide squad in that sense. We are excited to see more about this game because we haven't even heard of penal legions yet! We'll have to look into them
@@GMineo if you'd like to read books about a penal legion and how it functions i'd recommend the "last-chancers" book series, I have not read all of them but the characters show clearly how a penal legion works I think
You should check out the trailer videos to Vermintide 1 & 2 as well, for a look at how well the studio does ambience. The same dev studio is making Darktide.
the big guy is an ogryn, an abhuman species that is strong enough to take on works in melee combat, they are almost like space marnes but slower and waaaaaay less intelligent, what an ogryn did to be sent to a penal legion I don't really know but knowing dann abnett (who writes amazing 40K stuff) it will worthy of the God emperors divine blessing
Interesting! Since they are abhuman I assume that they are seen as lesser than in the imperium because they are mutants? Could that be a reason as to why they are within the legion?
@@GMineo perhaps, but ogryns are seen as quite valuable for imperial guard regiments since they can carry tank weapons, heavy bolters, lascannons or other machinery next to that they can be extremely loyal to their superiors and commissars love to have a loyal ogryn by their side

Now for you to really understand the trailer you're on a random Hive world that's loyal to the Imperium probably one of the manufactorum worlds and you play as Guardsman / inquisitorial agents these guys are just under the contract of inquisitors probably and the big guys that you saw are called ogryns their mutated humans that have been adopted into the service of the Imperium and to explain the chaos there it's probably just a chaos cult in the undercity of the hive that have risen up so not total end-of-the-world type threat at least yet but it is an issue to deal with sooner than later

@@GMineo it's going to be a first-person shooter / Hack and Slash if you want a good comparison look up vermintide 2 it's made by the same company only difference is is that it's based in Warhammer fantasy or AoG while darktide is based in the 40K setting
Oh okay! One of us have played a little of vermintide and had a good time with it! That is exciting. I definitely think we will love playing this when it comes out
ogryns aint mutants they are humans that over generations (in the age of strife) adapted to the planet they where strandet on . mutation can be within one generation or instant with the right conditions. ogryns are like rattlings a thing of evolution over many generations

It seems like this is an interrogator (an inquisitor in training) "acquiring" some criminals to work for her. that's pretty common honestly. They tend to use people of skill regardless of legal standing. So that rouge cop about to be executed, he's a hire. I also am not sure GW gets credit for shoveling their product to 3rd party devs. Like if you hav a Marvel game made by a Japanese dev team I don't think you should expect Disney out of it.
