The codex astartes says the chapters had to shrink down when not in crusades... so the black templars just never stopped crusading. they are templar crusading knights, in 40k power armor.

Calling this a fan work is only part of the story.
The fan work is animation over a heavily abridged version of the audio book, with some redone dialogue and sound effects in places.
The full audio book is about four times as long, and read by Jonathan Keeble. That in turn is a reading of a novel by Aaron Demski-Bowden. Both novel and audio book are official products.

Primarchs are way bigger than average space marines and treated with way more respect, holding a near-religious status among their space marine sons. There are 20 known primarchs with 2 being erased from history at some point in time. From the remaining 18, half turned traitor and the other remained loyal. Many of the loyal ones are either missing or dead, with the only active loyal primarch so far being roboute guilliman who leads the ultramarines. I also think you guys should react to "who are the space marines" by the channel 40k theories. It's very informative and will help clear some stuff up.

    • @cl1cka

To be fair Primarchs are demi-gods basically and insanely strong. Robute basically ripped apart demons and Chaos Marines with his bare hands after waking up, after 10 000 years of stasis....And even being in his presence - heals illness and wounds for normal people...

The slap is an ancient knightly tradition. A reminder of oaths taken, and to always stand for yourself, your brothers, and your sworn duty.
The best unsaid thing about the Astartes is that they, despite being so far removed biologically from mankind (being posthuman), they still are confronted by all-too-human trials and tribulations writ large. They have fears, failings, and emotions the same or deeper than the rest of us.
The "Archenemy" they refer to that killed Mordred is Chaos. Daemons, and the warp. Those followers of the Primordial Annihilator, or the "Dark Powers" and the 4 Gods of Chaos.
Chaplains also catch their brother marines when they be slippin'.
The Black Templars are on an Eternal Crusade stemming from their founding and inadherence to the codex astartes. They hold no homeworld, and sail around in their flotilla led by their flagship the Eternal Crusader, and seek out any combat theater they can find invited or not, and recruit from basically wherever they please.

The Black Templars are the descendants of Rogal Dorn, but more specifically of Dorn's second in command, First Captain Sigismund, the Emperor's Champion. When the Imperial Fists Legion was divided into Chapters, Sigismund was given one of those Chapters, who were named the Black Templars, who swore that they would continue to Crusade across the stars until humanity controlled the galaxy and no enemy of Mankind remained.
As a crusading Chapter, the Black Templars have no singular homeworld, but are instead split amongst fleets of ships, with each fleet serving as a single Crusade, flying off independently to conquer worlds and kill aliens, heretics, and mutants in the Emperor's name. They recruit from countless different worlds (including Armageddon) rather than only one.
Helbrecht is the High Marshal, the most senior commander of the Black Templars, and leader of what is called The Eternal Crusade, because their quest to rid the universe of enemies will never end. Grimaldus is made Reclusiarch here, making him the most senior Chaplain in the Chapter, and in charge of the chapter's relics and most sacred rites.
A common tradition amongst the Black Templars is the use of weapon chains. Sigismund took up this practice during the Great Crusade, and Black Templars continue it: a Black Templar cannot be disarmed because his weapons are affixed to chains wrapped around their arms.

    • @GMineo
      @GMineo  2 года назад

That last bit is a detail we hadn't noticed yet! Kinda cool when you think about it, but makes me wonder why they started using weapon chains during the great crusade and not before.

    • @N0-1_H3r3
      @N0-1_H3r3 2 года назад

@@GMineo The use of weapon chains actually comes from one of the Traitor Legions, before they turned. The World Eaters used them, as it had been a part of the gladiatorial combats on Nuceria, the world were Angron, the World Eaters' Primarch was found. Sigismund spent time sparring with Khârn, Captain of the World Eaters 8th company, and adopted the technique.
Of course, those events were before the Heresy, and ten thousand years ago, so nobody remains who remembers them... well, except Khârn.

@@GMineo Depends on the chapter and the state of the marine. Spending time in the warp can make it hard to asses a marines service life as time flows strangly.
The oldest serving loyalist spacemarine is Chaptermaster Dante of the Blood angels, who is topside of 1,200.
We also had a marine hit by a temporal weapon that aged him a few thousand years and he was still in active service for some time after that.
If you are talking marines interned in Dreadnaughts then they live a LOT longer. Partly is the armor plating, partlythe fact they are only wheeled out when really neaded and partly the amount of time they spend in stasis. The oldest of them is said to be Bjorn the Fellhanded of the space wolves. He is over 10,000 years old and was around to witnis the birth of the imperium.
Other marines that old are some of the new Primaris. Long story short after the emperor fell a Primarch called Guiliman was put in charge. He reformed the imperium and the spacemarine legions into chapters. Another thing he did was pick out a particular genius and task him with building a better spacemarine. Given 10,000 years access to forbiden lore and licence to tinker in ways others felt unthinkable he succeded. He built up a large legion of these marines over time and held them in stasis, some of them being from the dawn of the imperium.

One of my favorite short stories of the Black Templars involves a Heavy Weapons Squad (approx. 6 Marines) facing off against an overwhelming force of Khorne Cultists (Regular Humans, but Blood-crazed Berzerkers). Upon seeing the thousands of enemy coming at them, the BT Sgt. keeps having the Squad fall back once they get too close, often losing a Marine in the process, which the BT Corporal is almost mutinously against further falling back, since in his eyes, falling back is shameful. However, each time the BTs fall back, the Cultists are so crazed that they kill a good amount of their number, for Khorne "Cares Not From Whom The Blood Flows", so that after a third fall back, the four Marines that are left are able to finally defeat them. After the battle, when the Corporal, who was ready to come to blows with the Sgt., is reprimanded, the Sgt. saying basically, 'Have faith in your superiors and don't ever question me again, pup!'. Great Story!

The Black Templars are a successor chapter of the Imperial Fists they are sons of the Primarch Rogal Dorn.
They are a fleet based crusading chapter and they are also religious fanatic zealots plus they don't like normal humans very much and have an extreme dislike for Pyskers this gets them into conflict with other chapters that have Liberians (space marine Pyskers) which is ironic because the Emperor was a Pysker.
Also unlike other chapters the Black Templars worship the Emperor as a god like the rest of the Imperium, other space marine chapters don't worship the Emperor as god they view him based on the Imperial truth set 10 thousand years ago in the time of great crusade were the space marines don't view the Emperor as a god but the greatest human ever.

Okay, before we get started, here's the background of this story. Back around 2000, Games Workshop held a global 40K campaign event called the Third War for Armageddon. The Second was already part of the background and this event gave real 40K players the chance to determine a piece of 40K history. After the event ended, a number of stories were written based on it, including the novel Helsreach by Arron Dempsky-Bowden. The book was later released by GW as an audiobook. Richard Boylan took the audio and created animation to go with it. It was a one-man fan project released in 13 instalments.
3:57 - We should punish YOU as a heretic for even suggesting that. Grimaldus is a Space Marine Chaplain, a spiritual leader of the Space Marines. Moreover, he is a Black Templar, probably the most spiritually fanatic of all loyalist Space Marine chapter.
4:28 - Listen more closely: 3:34 He said 'I live only to slay FOR the Emperor.'
    imitations
11:52 - To be clear: this is not just jumping between present and past, but also between Grimaldus' premonitions of doom.
12:03 - The average life span of a Space Marine is 250 years, mostly because they get killed a lot. The oldest Space Marines have lived to over 1000 years, though those are EXTREMELY rare circumstances. This of course does not count the pilots of Dreadnoughts, who are kept in stasis between engagements and can thus be kept alive indefinitely.
13:55 - Again, to be clear, this squad is GRIMALDUS' squad, not his predecessor's. He has been fighting beside them for decades in most cases. Only his rank is different.
14:14 - That was a pessimistic fantasy of Grimaldus'. It wasn't real.
14:48 - The Archenemy is Chaos. The previous Reclusiarch was killed in a duel with a greater demon. It's not really important.
17:42 - No. Helsreach was just one of several major engagement zones during the Third Armageddon War. It was not more valuable than any other major conflict zone, though it did have the distinction of being the site where the planet was first settled, and so had some symbolic value. It just seems like it was more important because it's the location that was explored most in-depthly in literature after the fact.
17:51 - There were over 50,000 Space Marines from 25 chapters involved in the Third Armageddon War. Of all of those, only 100 Black Templars were assigned to defend Helsreach, and the only other major Space Marine contingent in the city was a group of 70 Salamanders that temporarily reinforced them later in the war. The majority defenders of Helsreach were 6 regiments of Armageddon Steel Legion (Imperial Guard).
19:19 - Now you're getting into deep-dive stuff. The whys for the orks invading Armageddon aren't that relevant to this story. All that really matters here is that Ghazkul came back to get revenge for losing the last time he came. Let these guys get a handle on the basics first.
21:04 - Seems like he's confusing the Black Templar neophyte training order with advancement in other parts. Grimaldus was not just a regular Sword Brother, he was one of the Chaplains. There were a score of Chaplains under Mordred, not just Grimaldus. When Mordred died, there were three or four chaplains up for his position. Grimaldus was just the choice favored by Mordred. The final decision was made by Helbrecht, the Chapter Master of the Black Templars.
23:41 - As previously noted, at least 25 Space Marine chapters contributed substantial resources to this war. Of all the chapters that came, the Black Templars came in the greatest numbers, which by tradition made their Chapter Master commander of the Astartes forces in the warzone. As will be addressed later, Helbrecht specifically assigned Grimaldus to command the defense of Helsreach as a personal growth exercise. As for the Black Templar's relation to the Imperial Fists, that means about as much as a combat knife to a fire caste warrior. The Black Templars have 0 interest in fortification and protection. All they care about is slaughtering enemies and conquering lands. It's against their nature to defend a location, a fact which greatly annoys the marines NOW and will cause some drama with the Salamanders later. The defense of Helsreach is, to the Black Templars, LITERALLY the worst assignment in this entire war.
25:40 - Okay, most of what this guy says here is right, but it's mostly stuff that's secondary to their main drive. The main thing that drives the Black Templars is that they treat the world as if the Emperor's Great Crusade never ended. Their motivation is to keep crusading, to keep conquering and expanding the Imperium and to destroy it's enemies. Most of the other stuff he mentions stems from this idea.

  • @betathoughtexperiment

As usual your lore guy did a great job introducing everything. I have a couple little details I think will cement who the black templars are. He mentioned they are from the Imperial fists which are the sons of rogal Dorn. His entire thing was fortification building up defenses et cetera. Rogel is the one who built the Imperial palace and the fortifications within on terra. You can think of every other chapter chapter descending from the Imperial fists in that light except the black templars. They represent The fury and anger of their primarch. They are nearly the inverse of Imperial fists. They are mad. And to add to your lore master's point on their numbers there is an exception in the codex on recruitment. You are only allowed 1000 members numbers unless you are on a crusade then it doesn't apply. So the black templars are on an eternal crusade that never ends and nearly have enough space Marines to make them A legion. But they're always kept at different parts of the Galaxy so no one can really tell how many there are but if they call a lbut if they cool at least in 1 place they would likely be 20,000 50,000 of them. And they've literally streamlined the recruitment process because they die so quickly. They are the largest chapter. They do not do anything someone else's way, they only do things their way. Oh, and They hate heretics so much that they'll kill you for heterocromia. ( 2 different color eyes. )

Thank you as always for the extra info! What surprises us is how angry they seem to be from what we are learning, almost so much that we are surprised that they are able to work with even normal humans and such.

@@GMineo There is a story somewhere about some situation happening and one of their leaders got really injured and they were trying to take him to the hospital and a bunch of people came over trying to help Or something of that nature and they just cut through 2000 or so people so that they wouldn't be delayed. Most space Marines see humans as nothing more than token resources to be thrown away. The black templars especially will happily kill a million people if it means they can accomplish the objective 10 minutes faster. One of the only factions that cares about humans at all are the salamanders. You'll actually see this interaction at some point.
But at the end of the day they are incredibly intelligent and if they don't manage the resource properly they will die.

Damn that's crazy. We're so excited to dive more into the black templars while we watch helsreach, and it sounds like we might learn a little bit about the salamanders as well? Thank you as always for your lore drops. They are a huge help to us!
